Wrestling Wreport: the Southern Scuffle Open Thread

It wouldn't be a wrestling post without BSD's official wrestling pic!

It wouldn't be a wrestling post without BSD's official wrestling pic!

You mean there's an open thread for Wrestling? Yes, that's how serious we are about wrastlin' here at Penn State. There's precious little coverage of the Southern Scuffle so use this as a collecting point for info we can share. For starters here's the bracket.

Here's another option through TrackWrestling.com.

Coverage is provided by GoPSUSports.com for those of us outside the State College area.

The first round starts at 10:00 AM.

Check that...

Martellotti has dropped out and Nick Fisher will wrestle in his place

huge bummer

A big chunk of my interest in this tourney was seeing how close Martelotti was to scoring for us in march

Dito

But it seems he’ll wrestle in the next dual

Penn State will have three pigtail bouts

Beitz at 141
Fisher at 165
Ed Ruth at 174

Newb here...

whats a pigtail bout?

prelim match before the actual bracket matches.

most times its a win and in, lose and out match.

Gotcha.

Thanks!

One more question...

You say this is before the bracket…but do the points count toward our team total?

Yes

Nor really before the bracket but before the actual first round

Cool

Thanks for the info.

Anytime

That’s what I’m here for! : )

Maybe.

Only if you win the following match.

If a loss follows, no points.

Do we have to name our 10 scorers before the tourney begins

Or can we take highest score in each weight?

pretty sure they designate scorers before the tourny starts
No

you have to name your 10 starters and the rest are “unattached”

It's the round before the first round

Who was his opponent?

It was an unranked wrestler

Jorge Gavillan of Campbell

Man, I didn't even know Campbell had a team.
RR

Did you misplace an ‘a’ in your sig?

Nope.

Lyrics vs. performance

I don’t think I ever heard him perform it without the ‘a’ in ‘this a way’

Oh, duh, my fault.

Correction forthcoming.

Pick it, Moon.
Now I can

picture/hear Waylon singing about Joe. Have you though about a rewrite of the entire song?

No.

That is one song I will not touch. It’s borderline sacred.

I can appreciate

that sentiment. However, alternate words are always rattling around my brain bucket while listening to any song…

And

JVP as a mix/blend of the sacred and profane seems somehow appropos.

This is awesome Galen

Thanks for all the updates.

Fair enough.

Sounds like the Lions are doing well.

Yeah, I am also very curious about this

Sounds like PSU is going great, but love to hear how the other powers are doing.

Penn State 15-3!!

Good back end to the 1st round

So uhhh....

Is 15-3 a good score? Who are we beating?

IceIce

Keep meaning to tell you I love your sig. It speaks to many of the great accomplishments at Penn State, by Penn Staters. Thanks!

Thanks yo

If you really want to know, those are three separate comments I’ve seen posted and just threw together into the sig.

Collectively sends a strong, positive message.
No, not the score

Penn State wrestlers had 15 wins and only 3 losses.

Score

1. Penn State PSU 39.0
2. Minnesota MINN 33.5
3. Cornell CORN 30.5

Where did you get that, I was looking?!?!

Their site is a bit of a pain, info below

Several Steps to get there:

(1) http://www.trackwrestling.com/tw/Login.jsp

(2) Southern Scuffle 01/01 – 01/02/2012 Chattanooga, TN

(3) Viewer

(4) Team Score & Team Results (there’s one or two more redundant clicks to get to these options & the page doesn’t refresh neatly)

I copied only the top 10

Had chores to do, take down Christmas tree, for 2, clean up livingroom (needles), bring recliner back upstairs, put together a cabinet, winterize garage (snow blower to front, lawnmower to back), can now follow along real time.

Making me tired, BMAN!

I am cleaning out my closet and basement in between posting here and watching some NFL. Sounds like you are a lot more ambitious than I.

sitting on my ass with a Guiness Extra Stout

It'll go good with fried Cougar!
Lol

Fried Cougar tastes like chicken.

I'm hoping our D serves up an extra-large portion.
I feel somewhat confident in this game

I have no idea why but I just feel good about this game

I think that confidence is justified.

Hope Bolden has a great game. It would be nice to have another QB controversy to get us through the off-season, rather than discussing other events ad nauseum.

Link Attempt

To the trackwrestling Live Bracket. It’s got a ‘gateway’ page, so not sure if it’ll work, but the final land should be on a real simple page that has individual links to live brackets for each weight class.

My paste doesn’t work so well, so here is the Penn State Wrestlign Club page and it has a good link to it called ‘Live Brackets.’ Also has nice wrestler-by-wrestler summary of performances.

Thanks

That’s a good site

Not to derail this thread

but FoxSports is reporting Pats OC/QB coach Bill O’Brien is our next HC.

Here is a link: http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/Penn-State-Nittany-Lions-zero-in-on-Bill-OBrien-as-Joe-Paterno-replacement-010112

I tried to do a FanPost, but failed . . . .

If True

Our AD lied!

It's on ESPN and I believe USA Today is where it started.

I’m not buying it. There’s no substance to it, just coincidences. If they’re going after a pro coach, there’s no rush to make this decision. The Pats season is heading into the playoff, and I doubt they’d make it official before their season is over.

But the Pats would also recognize the new HC needs to lock down

this recruiting year. No harm in announcing it now, esp. if O’Brien indicated to the seach committee he was keeping Scrap, LJ Sr., et al.

The Pats aren't going to care about anyone or anything as long as they're in Super Bowl contention.
I think it's all BS
Was just going to say that

I will not believe anything, until i see it on tv in a press conference.

Time will tell.

I’m not totally believing, but I want us to get someone who will get us past the garbage. Scrap can do that, but his job will be tougher because of his long-time association with State.

Why would they want

a Brown graduate?

Are you buying or trading in?

Hope so!

Don’t bother to save any; I’ll savor it from afar.

smells good here, you may be able to pick that up down there.
Wind is out of the west, unfortunately.

I am just smelling the chicken houses right now.

That’s fine. We get city folk out here looking for places to live, and the smell is a great deterrent.

Thanks for the info Galen!

Just got home for the movies, glad to see our boys doing well.

What did you see, NC?
I saw War Horse last night

All my friends were either working or with their women folk. I highly highly recommend it, was pehnomenal movie and beautifully done.

My oldest bro took his daughter to that one.

Also recommended.

I would expect nothing less from Spielberg

he’s just amazing, and so versatile

He and my older son are both St. Louis Rams fans.

Gotta be the only two in existence . . .

Well he had a great basis

The Broadway play looked phenomenal, all the horses were puppets. Won many Tony awards.

FTFY.

all the horses media were puppets

The send up on SNL was surprisingly funny
Damnit missed that
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

had to bribe a friend to go with me…honestly think it was more graphic than the Swedish one. but closer to the book than that one, IMO

Oldest bro read book --

liked it.

I liked all of them

unlike Kmart, I enjoyed the third one as well as the others, I literally was up half the night finishing because I couldn’t put it down during the last 100 pages or so. I think this one was the least favorite of all three, possibly because it is so graphic. I like the character of Lisbeth, she’s so badass—and Rooney Mara does an excellent job portraying her (not that Noomi Rapace wasn’t also good, but I think I like Mara better)

They're on "to read' list, but

have a few others ahead of them.

we enjoyed them

I am now hooked on another Swedish writer, Henning Mankell but am currently reading 5th Witness by Michael Connelly, which is really hard to put down. If you havent read his stuff, you should.

how is Henning Mankell?

he has quite a few in the same series, right?

I like his stuff but he starts by getting into a lot of character development and I think the translation gets funky sometimes but his stories have been really good. I have read the first two Wallender books, he is a police detective. I’m really learning my Baltic geography, too.

do you have to read them in order without being lost?

like, could I just read the best one first and maybe skip around?

The Wallender series, I would say yes

Its best, he did refer back to the first book, especially with establishing the main character, Kurt Wallender.

Does he have a high-wire act, too?
I think that was Wallenda, LOL

Reading these books there are a lot of towns and people names that are bizzare. The last book I read had the character going to Latvia, again geography lesson and language

You say Wallender, I say Wallenda.

I did say I live in the South now, right?

Sounds like a good series to add to my list — thanks!

Supper is ready in 2 minutes.

Just poured a fresh Guiness Extra. mmmm

Happy eating, BMAN!!

Operational finance.

Currently the business manager for two departments at Duke U. Handle the finances, with strong support for operational stuff because our so-called “operations” folks are content to do things the same way they did them in 1988.

My Duke e-mail address is in my profile; shoot me an e-mail if you want and I can send you a resume. Up to you, of course.

Go enjoy supper!!

It was probably called something else back in the Stone Age when I was in HS.

I thought Wade would make a big splash at this tournament!

No, but Tebow/John Fox were correct to be upset.

Joyner has denied the O'Brien rumors, btw.
No really?!?!?

Could it be because they aren’t hiring him???

LOL, yeah, that sums it up.

Scrap has done a great job with the media down in Texas. Is praising the team and other coaches profusely, pointing out how professional the coaches have been in spite of the uncertainties.

To some extent, I almost hope the job is toxic and no one wants it

At some point, if the quality of candidates is bad enough, they might be forced to hire Bradley. I know it isn’t the ideal way to get the job, but if that’s what it takes to keep him here, I could live with it.

Scrap and the other coaches have certainly acted with integrity and character.

That’s plenty enough recommendation for me.

I'm shocked, truely shocked :-o

Do you think it's weird that they award everone who had no pigtail a bye Adv pt

When they win their first (next) match?

They don't do this at Nationals or B1Gs
Also

What you’ve posted shows Reber, who hasn’t won a match, scoring 1 Adv pt for his championship bracket bye (pigtail) and .5 Adv for his consolation bracket bye despite in both cases losing the following matches.

He’s 0-2 and out of the tournament and still got 1.5 points for the team, by virtue of showing up? That’s pretty wac.

Unless I’m missing something.

Gettin my Rambler on....(self-replies)

Yay, I was right and they’ve updated the team scores to remove that 1.5 erroneously ascribed to Reber. As of 9:06p:

1. Penn State PSU 118.0
2. Minnesota MINN 110.5
3. Missouri MISS 83.5
4. Cornell CORN 79.0

Here, I made a google sheet breaking down PSU scoring per wrestler per match. We’ve poured in 42 team points in bonus alone. Pretty remarkable.

Still, Minny’s also got 8 alive in the championship bracket (2 at 133), so this will be tightly contested. Still, still, our lads performances today were lights-out! Still, still, still, tomorrow also marks the last time we’ll get to see Devon Still play for us.

Thanks for the clarifications

I waited for the individual results to be updated before posting anything but I didn’t understand the scoring. I’m still not sure if the final team score will be based on taking the highest 10 (regardless of weight class) or all 15 entries’ scores.

I wonder why Frank M did not compete at 133 (rumors)?
I wonder why Sherlock did not compete at 141 (rumors)?

I started geeking out on the scoring last year

But am still refining. I’ll keep that spreadsheet updating as live as I can keep it today. The PSWC site is amazing & quick with posting individ results which can easily be copied/pasted. And semifinal wins pack another Plc scoring wallop—6pts for each win (for guaranteeing at least 2nd place). Still, with Minny having so many there also, it’ll more likely come down to the 4 Plc pts a win in the finals makes ya.

I read Martellotti is still set to compete in our next dual, but saw no rumors yet why he didn’t compete here.

I also read that Sherlock has been removed from the roster and board speculation has guesses he may follow Matt Dernlan (who recruited him) to Clarion. Roster here.

Oh, also missed one of your questions

The other fellas taught me yesterday that we apparently named our ten scorers before the tourney began, and the posted Team Scores support this. At the Midlands tourney that Iowa just finished, it appeared you could name two scorers in one weight and ignore another weight altogether (although I read conflicting reports of who were the official scorers), but I don’t know if the Scuffle allows this. If they did, it would seem (even given the benefit of hindsight) that Sanderson would know that Brown or Vollrath were more likely to score points than Reber and would have named either of them such. Similar with either Brown/Vollrath vs. Pearsall maybe?

In any event it’s clear our Team Scoring wrestlers are our predominant starters at all 10 weights, so I made two ‘sheets’ on that google doc, one for starters and one for benchers. So Vollrath & Brown’s scores have not been counted along the way.

Thanks again

Good experience for the backups!
Zero points from 133; ouch!

Bet

And yeah, this year’s Nationals figures to be much closer with both Iowa & Minny having improved and with us having lost one of our five Top-3s from last year. We’re obviously not gonna repeat Andrew Long’s 18 pts at that weight, but we need to have somebody score a few points. Man, I hope Martelotti can:
1. Get qualified
2. Win 2 – 4 matches

Pin Race (as of this moment)

Wrestler Name Team Number of Pins Total Time
1. Garringer, Ryan Ohio 3 5:00
2. Ruth, Edward Penn State 3 5:38
3. Dake, Kyle Cornell 3 7:22
4. Wright, Quentin Penn State 3 13:14
5. Yohn, Sonny Minnesota 2 2:06
6. Haynes, Brent Missouri 2 3:08
7. Thorn, David Minnesota 2 3:09
8. Alton, Dylan Penn State 2 3:38
9. Bosak, Stephen Cornell 2 3:42

So, we have 9 in the semis, none of whom face each other.

We could have 9 finalists & 7 champions. We have 3 in the consolations.

Ha, that'd be hilarious

It would also mean a few massive or notable upsets, such as:
157: unranked James Vollrath upsetting #1 ranked Kyle Dake, or
157: #10 Dylan Alton upsetting Dake
174: unranked Matt Brown already knocked off #7 ranked Dorian Henderson; next up for him is #10 Logan Storley
184: #5 Q would have to finish strong, including possibly over #3 Bosak
197: #11 McIntosh would have to knock off #1 Cam Simaz & then possibly #2 Sonny Yohn
HWT: #8 Wade would have to unseat #4 Clayton Jack & #7 Tony Nelson
