Alas, we've reached the end of our way-too-early look at the 2012 roster, and we hope you've enjoyed taking a look at who will actually be playing football in under nine months. Tomorrow we'll put it all together, but the long and short of it is that we ended 2011 with 67 non-graduating scholarship players. How the remaining spots will be filled rests by Coach O'Brien and staff, and their hopefully relentless push to the February 1st Signing Day, is anyone's guess.
Today we take a look at the offensive line, a position so hard to predict that the two deep you see below will most likely end up being completely wrong by September 1. There are highly-touted recruits yet to make an impact after a few years in the program (Eric Shrive), highly-touted recruits on the edge of perceived greatness (Donovan Smith), and a whole host of others in between.
With Mac McWhorter now in the fold, the offensive line has just one coach to answer to, a marked change from the 2011 regime that saw Dick Anderson coaching the guards and centers, while Bill Kenney coached the tackles and tight ends. McWhorter saw varied levels of success at Texas, where he won a national championship in 2005 and was named the Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008 by the American Football Coaches Association, but was essentially run out of town after a couple of down years by Longhorn standards.

First things first, the cupboard:
| OL | Class |
|---|---|
| Matt Stankiewitch | RSSR |
| Mike Farrell | RSSR |
| John Urschel | RSJR |
| Eric Shrive | RSJR |
| Ty Howle | RSJR |
| Adam Gress | RSJR |
| Frank Figueroa | RSJR |
| Nate Cadogan | RSJR |
| Mark Arcidiacono | RSJR |
| Khamrone Kolb | RSSO |
| Miles Dieffenbach | RSSO |
| Donovan Smith | RSFR |
| Ryan Nowicki | RSFR |
| Angelo Mangiro | RSFR |
| Anthony Alosi | RSFR |
| Anthony Stanko | FR |
It's not coincidence that every single lineman has used their redshirt. Offensive linemen are terribly difficult to project, and almost always require at least a year learning the playbook, working towards proper weights, etc.
Further, this is the deepest unit on the roster, obviously, but could grow even larger as some players jump back and forth from the defensive line. Today, though, we'll look at the projected two-deep. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess, except Anthony Stanko's use of a redshirt.
| LT | LG | C | RG | RT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smith | Arcidiacono | Stankiewitch | Urschel | Farrell |
| Gress | Kolb | Dieffenbach | Shrive | Nowicki |
Of the starters, the middle and right side of the line are the most stable. Stank started the first ten games of the season as well as the bowl game, and Urschel and Farrell saw a good deal of playing time in the spots previously occupied by DeOn'tae Pannell and Chima Okoli, respectively.
The left side of the line, on the other hand, is essentially up for grabs. Quinn Barham and Johnnie Troutman each started all 13 games at left tackle and left guard, respectively. Behind them, Adam Gress saw action in six games, Mark Arcidiacono in two, and Khamrone Kolb saw action in just one game. Donovan Smith was a true freshman last year, as was Angelo Mangiro, who might work his way up into this two-deep before long.
Smith was a natural left tackle out of high school, and impressed anyone and everyone who saw him in practice a year ago. He is tall, has the athletic ability to keep speed rushers at bay, and has the rare opportunity of becoming a four-year starter. Whoever is under center next year is going to need time to throw, and protecting that quarterback's blind side is of utmost importance.
Hopefully all of these guys come to camp ready to play, and McWhorter has some difficult decisions on his hands. There are at least six bodies behind these ten that are pushing for playing time, so the bodies are there. The question remains whether the talent and coaching can come around.

I have to commend you guys on all the work on these.
I’m starting the think the cupboard really is not that bare for 2012, and if BOB can get a few of the right pieces to fall into place we might make a darkhorse run for the BIG title.
I know I drink A LOT of blue kool-aid though, so I’ll try to temper my enthusiasm.
SarcasmJam - January 12, 2012
It's easy to temper the enthusiasm.
Just look at the qb situation. It adds a cup of vinegar and a tablespoon of salt to the even the best of blue kool-aid.
J Breezy - January 12, 2012
vic vinegar
swiggy04 - January 12, 2012
also as someone pointed out in another thread
a quick look at the other QBs in the B1G next year shows that PSU may actually be in very good shape QBwise by comparison
swiggy04 - January 12, 2012
so i guess im saying im more of a Hugh Honey
swiggy04 - January 12, 2012
Anyone references Always Sunny
Gets an easy Rec from me. Love that show!!
AriesGD - January 12, 2012
So we have the tallest midgets!?
jman07 - January 12, 2012
I think..
PSU actually has a decent shot at winning its division.
Esteban d' Amur - January 12, 2012
Braxton Miller will be good.
As for the rest, no one is really coming to mind.
SarcasmJam - January 12, 2012
Denard?
kijana's acl - January 12, 2012
We miss them this year, barring a meetng in the CCG.
Jeff Junstrom - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Right
I just thought we were talking about B1G QBs who were clearly better then our bucket of chum.
kijana's acl - January 12, 2012
Granted,
That’s assuming Paul Jones is as good as the other two.
If he gets his credits in order (last I heard he missed the bowl by .2 of a credit?) for the fall, we might have ourselves another, more convoluted, competition.
Now that I think about that… sigh
misdreavus79 - January 12, 2012
I'm gonna predict Jones gets his grades together
and wins the QB job outright very early.
The only knock on this guy is his grades. Everytime I’ve seen him speak he always shows class and respect and never makes excuses.
For a highly touted recruit the guy has never bitched about anything and there has never been a mention of the word transfer from his mouth.
Not to mention the guy has a cannon and all reports I have heard of him while on the scout team are that he torches our D.
And we all know only good quarterbacks torch our D. I’ve never heard that McGloin or Bolden were torching our D on the occasions the 1s were going against the 1s.
The Heel - January 12, 2012
There is enough talent on board to get 8 wins
With some luck and good coaching we’ll be in the hunt for leaders co-champs again
psualum9931 - January 12, 2012
I'd be okay with 8-4
As long as there are things going on that make us hopeful for the BOB era (recruiting going well, offense has an identity, etc). I’d honestly be fine with 6-6 for that matter if that were the case.
speedomike - January 12, 2012
As long as we stay near 80%...
for the graduation rate too.
I’m really hoping that part of the equation remains in place.
LB31Monster - January 12, 2012
Agreed
speedomike - January 12, 2012
I'd say it would for the current players,
because they are all from the previous regime. I’d start measuring with this class, which technically is going to be BOBSled’s.
misdreavus79 - January 12, 2012
I exepect a rebuild year and a big learning year
That being said. With Redd back I think the offense will be great as long as the O-line has something. The thing that scares me is a whole new defense. yes LJSR is back but the schema is going to be different. I will be happy for a 8-4 or a 6-6. I just want to see a team fight. It doesn’t matter to me if they lose as long as they play strong and the coaches put them in the best position to win.
jetskijoe - January 12, 2012
6-6 with our Front 7 and Silas Redd?
No.
If we just played linebackers we could win 6 games.
With our schedule I think as long as Jones does what I expect him to do and the secondary is average I think we could win 9 games this year. Possibly more.
Yes, not only do I drink the kool aid, I have a glass in my hand right now.
The Heel - January 12, 2012
"with our schedule"
are we looking at the same schedule here? Because the only gimme on there IMO is Indiana.
Cari Greene - January 13, 2012
Well I'm not afraid of a few opponents.
Ohio is a gimmie.
I think we will beat Virginia, Temple and Navy.
And Northwestern, Illinios and Iowa to start the season.
I’m not saying some of those are gimmies… but I’m saying they are very winnable.
The Heel - January 14, 2012
I think almost every game on our schedule is winnable
but I don’t think that means the schedule is easy. I think it’s tougher than a lot, if not most, of the schedules in the big ten.
Cari Greene - January 14, 2012
It's certainly dangerously thin at spots (see Mike's secondary post yesterday)...
But, and we’ve heard this before, if those on the roster played to perceived potential, we could be really solid.
Jeff Junstrom - January 12, 2012
Cadogan
Jeff, I noticed that Nate failed to crack your projected two-deep for next season. He was frequently listed as the No. 2 LT behind Barham on depth charts published during the season, but I didn’t see him get a lot of actual playing time. Do you any additional information on his status? I always liked his brother and have been pulling for him to do well here.
PSU_Buch - January 12, 2012
Hasn't he
been a backup TE in the past? Didn’t he catch the TD pass in the 400 game against NW a few years ago?
Although maybe they will pick one position, LT or TE for him now since you know, there is only ONE offensive line coach…hey maybe that was the problem, our tight ends and tackles were being taught the same stuff and were confused as to which position was which!
va2pennstate - January 12, 2012
I think he was only a TE due to our lack of depth at the position
I’d probably put him or Gress ahead of Smith, though it doesnt make a difference at this point because we have all new staff evaluating these guys.
skarocksoi - January 12, 2012
Dont sell Smith short. I really think this guy has 4 year starter written all over him.
The Heel - January 12, 2012
Like I said, it's a crapshoot.
The LT spot last year was Barham’s alone, with some spells here and there. Smith appears to be the heir apparent, and under the old regime, I might have put someone like Cadogan in the two-deep. But with a whole new staff, which means no job is safe, I think it’s Donovan’s to lose. Cadogan has swapped back and forth from TE, but I think he’s back with the OL full time. Just don’t know where.
Jeff Junstrom - January 12, 2012
Another spot I could see a battle brewing is center.
Jeff Junstrom - January 12, 2012
Interesting
I thought Stank was pretty solid last season, though if Dieff lives up to his billing and is close with him performance-wise, I guess I could see a new staff deciding to invest in the future.
Thanks for the response re: Cadogan. I figured it was something like that. My preference would actually be to see Smith be the guy at LT if he’s ready, but it would be nice to see Nate see some time either as a back-up or at another spot on the line.
PSU_Buch - January 12, 2012
Is it possible for Miles to see some time at guard
if Stank has center locked up? If the kid is too good to keep off the field…?
jrock4 - January 12, 2012
Anyone think McWhorter is going to put some weight on Stank and Urschel?
OmarLittle - January 12, 2012
Ready to plat?!?!
I hope not, that doesn’t sound good. Sorry Jeff, couldn’t resist.
Galen - January 12, 2012
Ha. Too much time at work, I suppose.
Staring at plat maps all day could make a blind man go insane.
Jeff Junstrom - January 12, 2012
Little late
and I might be in the wrong thread here but didn’t know if anyone would see it in a fanshot, but can someone who attended the town meeting last night maybe get a synopsis of it? Kind of like we used to do with Joe’s pressers? That would greatly assist those of us who are following from outside the state!
Also, as we try to change this structure…let us not forget the words of Bluto…was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! and it ain’t over now…..
va2pennstate - January 12, 2012
"Let him go, he's on a roll."
I don’t think anyone on staff was at the meeting last night, but if anyone wants to make a FanPost (people read those) and share thoughts, please do so.
Jeff Junstrom - January 12, 2012
Let's
DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
va2pennstate - January 12, 2012
town hall
the take away when thinking about the board or university management, competence apparently was not an important attribute.
sfredd - January 12, 2012
One thing I notice right away with the "cupboard".
Only two seniors on the roster. It’s a little refreshing to see that our offensive line can’t be completely filled with under-achieving seniors only to be re-made the next year in similar fashion. With a new coach in charge of the entire line (sorry, but the previous split was asinine), I’m hopeful that some of these younger guys can reach their potential.
Swiggs - January 12, 2012
I heard Hbeach is new GA for Oline...
SweepTheLeg - January 12, 2012
I fully support and endorse ^this
TheMightyErik - January 13, 2012
I'm really excited about McWhorter
Even in the two “down seasons” at UT, the offensive lines still managed to put up middle of the road production, as you’ll see from the stats below. The thing I wonder is how much having one coach with one terminology will help in the development of offensive linemen. Someone else pointed this out yesterday, and I think it bears repeating, the young kids were constantly being moved from Guard to Tackle (see Shrive) and thus were always switching coaches. That had to have hampered their development and I’m excited to see what will happen when that’s no longer an issue.
PSU Offensive Line Stats
2011—1973 rush yards, 4.2 yards per carry, 14 sacks
UT Offensive Line Stats
2010—1806 rush yards, 4.2 yards per carry, 18 sacks (T-2nd B12)
2009—1905 rush yards, 4.1 yards per carry, 32 sacks
2008—2123 rush yards, 4.4 yards per carry, 26 sacks
2007—2398 rush yards, 4.9 yards per carry (3rd B12), 25 sacks
2006—2044 rush yards, 4.4 yards per carry, 19 sacks (T-2nd B12)
LionInTheWeeds - January 12, 2012
Yeah, but Big 12 defenses do not compare our conference
so it might not be apples to apples
nuker77 - January 12, 2012
The B1G has..
better defenses, the Big 12 has far better QBs.
Esteban d' Amur - January 12, 2012
Notice the number of sacks though
Even though our O-Line has not been the strength of this team, the last 2 years the number of sacks against us were really low. Even when they played for the MNC Texas still had over 20 sacks.
AriesGD - January 12, 2012
Yes, but
they dropped back to pass 350% more and opposing defenses knew it.
PSUinBOSSton - January 12, 2012
This.
The Heel - January 12, 2012
This is the most excited I have been in years about the 2012 season
really impressed with BOB and the mix of old/new staff…I really expect a HUGE season next year.
Talking 10+ wns
SweepTheLeg - January 12, 2012
He's certainly got all the ingredients
Continuity on defense, especially the front 7 that basically makes or breaks any given season. Nowhere to go but up on offense. Joe left behind a good, maybe great group of young players. Oh, and Ohio State is banned from B1G championship game and Wisco is going to have to find another rent-a-QB.
I’m most excited by how our recruiting will evolve in the next year or two. We should start to see those super-star skill position players start paying more attention to Penn State if we begin to field an offense with a pulse. You couldn’t blame them before, with a stone-age offense and a HC who never made recruiting visits… Now? I think the future is bright.
millzners - January 12, 2012
We got a Special Teams coach!?!
Thats dang near blasphemy! Seriously though, great news.http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2012/01/12/football_coach_AP_.aspx
DocPennState - January 12, 2012
"and Wisco is going to have to find another rent-a-QB."
Does Peyton Manning have another year of eligibility left?

Man, is it hard to get used to hearing/reading that.
The Schmatta - January 12, 2012
