The Tale
Lucas is the first commitment of the Bill O'Brien era, and is indicative of the type of player you'll see fill out this class. That's not to say that Lucas is a bad player (quite the contrary, actually), but if you are anticipating offer sheets with names like Alabama, Florida, Texas, and Oregon for the remaining committments, you're in for quite a surprise.
Originally planning to commit to Temple last week, Lucas postponed that decision until he heard from the Penn State coaches about an offer. That word came through Monday evening, following an in-home visit and follow-up phone call. Lucas was visited by Coaches Roof, Vanderlinden, and Butler.
Lucas had heard from Penn State in the past, and even took an unofficial visit, but didn't receive his offer until Monday, and accepted on the spot. Other schools that were pursuing Lucas, though that hadn't offered, include Connecticut, Virginia, and Rutgers.
Outlook
In what could turn out to be a huge steal in the Class of 2012, Jordan Lucas comes to Penn State as a consensus three-star player, but with tape that would suggest otherwise. There are some reports floating around that grades were an issue, which could explain his one year stint at a post-graduate academy in Massachusetts, but whether or not those reports are true is immaterial now. He has cleared Penn State's still-high academic standards and plans on being on campus this summer.
Lucas is a quick, slippery player on offense, but will project into the defensive backfield at Penn State. Whether this means safety or corner is debatable, as different analysts have different projections for Lucas. He can play on the line at cornerback, but also has quick closing speed for a safety. Penn State did not have a defensive back taller than 6'1" on last year's official roster, so Lucas already comes in on the high side. However, we still don't know what kinds of players Coach Butler and Coach Roof will be looking for in the next few years.
The downside here, through no fault of Lucas', is that his offer and commitment come almost simultaneously with Penn State's in-home visit with Armani Reeves. Did the staff learn something in that meeting that would suggest the need to offer Lucas? That's unclear as of yet. Reeves and teammate Cam Williams are set to be on campus in a couple of weeks (where Coach O'Brien would have off regardless of the Patriots standing in the playoffs). With national signing day 15 days away, the decisions for those two players appear to be coming down to the wire.

Newest Targets
Looking at the film of Lucas and another rumored target Okezie Alozie, one thing I like is their versatility. I agree with the assessment that Lucas will most likely play CB, but he does look very good as a RB. From Alozie’s film, he looks like the prototypical PSU running back. Maybe I’m over stating things, but these could be Plan B’s in case Akeel Lynch decides Happy Valley isn’t for him. Any thoughts?

I agree that the versatility looks great. I would not worry about the connection with the other guys, as we have room and are probably taking any quality player we can get right now. We are not dealing with having too many commits, unless I am terribly mistaken.

I’d think almost anyone on the current roster and among the recruits who can play a role in the new offense has a shot at a starting position. If you think moving Chaz Powell to DB was a big change, just wait until Belton is the QB next year and Pete Massaro is a pass catching TE.

New England Prep School Ball
I used to play up there, and man, watching film of Kiley, Golden, Lucas, and having seen what Redd can do, we would have been smoked by talent like that, and we were a good team. Not sure how all these kids are coming out of these schools, but this is a good sign for the future. For one, it looks like we are locking up New England (we will see with Reeves and Cam, but they were all PSU before November), and for another, you actually have to go to class and do at least most of your work at all those schools, even with the breaks allotted you for being a stud football or hockey player.

I didn't break down the depth chart
But it doesn’t seem to me like this conflicts with still trying to get Armani Reeves. Didn’t we have three starting defensive backs graduate this year? Even if we have enough guys to fill the depth chart at the moment, 1) the coaches might want guys who they think would be better in the new defense, and 2) they might want to add depth for a certain year down the line.

Not today.
Last week’s was postponed to put up a post closer to the weekend, and this one will be postponed because of the weekend. I ate something in New Orleans that just didn’t agree with me, and have been on my couch for a couple days now.
Most of the news out of the weekend is good news. The majority of the commits made statements that reaffirmed their solid commitments. Some are still wavering and we’ll keep an eye on that, as well. Finally, Cox enjoyed his visit, which bodes well for us. I’ll hopefully have something up at the end of the week. Also, every site that covers CFB, including this one, should be working on a Signing Day primer, so watch for that. Ours will probably go up sometime next week.

This kid looks like a player
and I love the way he read that little WR screen late in the video. He’s from New Ro, which is where Ray Rice played his HS ball.
I’m from that area, played ball there, have former teammates that coached against him. They say good things. I’m thinking that as a D-Back, he may have a bit of an adjustment as New Ro plays in Section 1 in NYS…very run heavy section of NY (Ray Rice, Matt Bernstein), where the QBs aren’t all that great. A lot of teams in that area still run a ton of Wing T. He’ll have to adjust to QBs who won’t give him that much time to close on a ball that’s in the air.
Hopefully, he’ll grow into his frame…he definitely looks quick enough to play CB.

No it certainly doesn't...
…but if he was coached up by the same coaching staff that has put a couple of players into FBS ball and also coached one NFL All-Pro then it’s worth mentioning…especially in that area where not too many guys end up playing ball.
New Ro is about as close to a football factory as you’ll get in that Section of NYS (and that isn’t saying much). Maybe their coaches do a better job of coaching these guys and putting them in position to succeed at the next level.
Although again, the competition is worse in that area than what you’ll find most everywhere else and as one of the larger down-county schools just a few minutes from NYC, they’ve been known to draw some better athletes up from the Bronx, etc just to play sports. The rest of that section is made up mostly of under-sized Italian kids who are more focused on lacrosse than football.
….but again, like I said earlier…judging from the tape, the kid seems to have the quickness and physical skills to compete at the next level regardless. Excited about him.

Well there currently is a wide separation among rankings.
247 has them at 29, which means we’d likely move into Top 25 with Cox, holding everyone else, and a couple more guys. However, Scout has them at 39, which means no chance. And each of those ranking already take into consideration Cam and Armani.

Sure everyone will look at his time as a black mark on OSU because of what he caused in the aftermath, but his time on the field wasn’t too bad. Didn’t he have 30+ wins in three years, including a Rose Bowl? I’d take that.

If it weren’t for the JS nuclear explosion, there is a chance we would be taking recruits from OSU instead of the other way around. No CCG and bowl games for a year could have swayed some of these kids, who appear to measure their college life in months rather than in four-five year commitments. Slight exaggeration, of course, but there are kids who pick a school “knowing” it is their gateway to the NFL, rather than as an educational opportunity.
Just my humble opinion — somewhat borne out by graduation rates.

And despite all the shit he gets all over the country, deserved or otherwise, his OSU teams won at a pretty handy clip. Off the field, Columbus was apparently a dumpster fire, but I’d take their on-field success from 08-10 any day.
Now, if you want to debate recruiting and the three different scenarios that could be happening (1: JS never happens, TatGate still does; 2: JS happens, TatGate doesn’t; or 3: neither ever happen) in addition to the current scenarion (4: both JS and TatGate happen), I’m happy to go that route, though a vast majority of it will be speculation.

Sure they got Meyer eventually, but they also got a vacated season (so, not 30 wins) and a year of Fickell. I work with O$U guys who wish more than anything that he had gone to Michigan. Of course, these are guys who actually care about the image of their school and not just winning.

Granted, the fall out from the Pryor scandal was like eating
a bag of farts for a year…BUT…33-2 as a starter, 3 Big Ten titles (1 vacated, which quite frankly I don’t give two hoots about) a Rose Bowl win over a a very good Oregon team, and a Sugar Bowl win (again vacated, again I don’t care) over a very good Arkansas team.
I trade that for one crappy year, a one year bowl ban, and Urban Meyer as the coach?
Yeah, 8 times out of 7 I’ll make that trade.

If you look at last week’s post that Mike and I did on the Depth Chart, our end of 2011 number was 67. That means 18 spots available. However, what kind of attrition can we expect? Beachum is already gone…who is next? I guessed 23 at the very beginning of this class, and I think that might be one or two high.
Noah is definitely gone. One of the premium site guys caught up with Noah’s dad Greg, who said Noah would be at Ohio State.
I think we’re in the driver’s seat with Cox, but it looks like he’ll take his recruitment down to the wire. It appears to be a B1G battle against OSU (who might be out of the running after cancelling his visit last weekend) and MSU.

My take from a very NON expert in these matters
Attrition is definitely thinning the DB depth chart this year as every starter is graduating.
If things go the way we all hope and PSU keeps Reeves and lands Cox as well, this dude will provide some needed depth. You never know how players pan out. At worst, he doesn’t ever crack the starting rotation but contributes in practice, special teams, scout team. At best, he ends up being a diamond in the rough (see Malcom Willis, Adrian Amos, etc) and really blows up.

First he gets welcome to penn state to bad you are not a higher star and your name is not Cox or Reeves. Who the hell knows he could be a great player. He could end up being a shutdown corner and better then the other 2. For all we know we could land a 5 star player and they could go off and stab someone or end up getting in trouble. I am happy with any player they pull in and is willing to take a chance with an all new coaching stuff.

Florida and Florida State are always right there also and Florida has had two terrible years being right around that number 1 recruiting class mark.

the problem I have with this argument
is at the time they were drafted, save maybe Mike Williams and Ernie Sims, those were considered at that point the “best players available” at positions of need at the time drafted. You think if he didnt draft Roy WIlliams at #7, hed have lasted much further than 5 or 6? Joey Harrington was going to fall to the second round in a weak QB draft to begin with (You could argue he had the best career of the QBs in that draft).
Its like Red Sox fans who get mad about Lackey and Crawford, and non Red Sox fans who make fun of them. There were like 10 other teams trying to get those guys. Lets not pretend like they were the only team out there trying to spend big money on them. They just happened to be the ones who got them.

Arent always right.
And in some cases, they can be wrong many times in a row.
And this is after a complete college career and private work outs and the entire NFL process entering a draft (combine/interviews/etc).
Obviously its harder to project and rate kids out of highschool, where the body of work is so much smaller and there are just so many kids to rate.

Sean is great at scooping the major recruiting news. Even if you’re only partially interested, his updates are pretty good. If you’re actually interested in recruiting, I recommend a L247 subscription.

That's a tough call right now.
Sean is doing a helluva job, but it’s only him at L247 (though he gets help from the other sites, as well as the regional and national guys). FOS is more staffed (thus more input), but that is also a minus sometimes, as some of the mods there are…poor moderators. They’ll all have the same news eventually, so I suppose it’s a matter of quality vs. quantity for you.
As for the boards, FOS is more established, so more content/commenters, but that too can be a downfall, with petty squabbling and in-fighting getting in the way of sometimes good information…

I guess the best thing for me to do would be to try the 7 day free trial for both and then pick one. Always like to get the perspective of someone who has already used them though.

Hopefully Skyler stays committed, but you can’t fault him wanting to stay close to family. Now if his dad takes an Oakland job and Skyler decommits for OSU, then you can be mad.
It should be noted that we offered another QB recently, who will be on campus this weekend. Fingers crossed that we can have two QBs in this class…

I am not sure who said it, but this is NOT a very good class. They may find some of the players they have will be successful but based on overall class rankings this is way down. Before the scandal hit, PSU had (according to Rivals) the 11th ranked class in the country. We were still behind Ohio St. and Michigan even though they were coming off of violations and a poor season respectively. As a huge Penn St. fan I will be the 1st to admit that we have done poorly recruiting against OSU and MU in the past and due to the scandal we face an uphill battle. Fans have to understand that for years a “dark cloud” will be over the football program.

Oh how I wish that could be true
but it likely will not happen. OSU has had great classes even before Urban got there. Having 1st hand knowledge he is an outstanding recruiter so likely OSU will start routinely having top 5 classes every year. I agree though he probably wont be around too long. Penn St. will have to start to keep all the PA & NJ kids like they used to do, then tap into OH, MI, VA, MD SC and FL for various kids but that will take a while.
