How do you not understand the difference between the two?
McGloin, not great. Bolden is the worst quarterback to ever start a game for Penn State. I can’t think of another quarterback, for any team, that Bolden is better than.
Get two first downs and flip field position, give the defense some time to rest and adjust, and this is a different game.
If the Wisconsin game compared to Sparty’s games against that same team taught us anything, it’s that you must move the football and rest your defense to have a chance against good offenses.
hilarious…we faked our way to 9-3 and got blasted by a conf USA team in the bowl. I’m buzzed, I’m angry, I’m ready for this fucking season to be over once and for all.
Do what you want to do, but I find dismissing our team’s hard work to overcome their flaws and the hard work of their opponents to be pathetically reactionary.
There was nothing “lucky” about our season and how soon this fanbase apparently turns against its team. Nothing new there, but it strikes me as silly to forget how much crap this team’s gone through in the past few weeks.
Yes, this game had the potential to be very similar to that Holiday Bowl.
Opponent’s high powered offense featuring QB with gaudy numbers against a good, solid defense. Differences from that game: the defense actually made some plays in that BYU game, and most importantly, a pretty decent QB performance by Tony Sacca.
The way the defense is playing makes me feel we may still lose but having an actual passing threat would have allowed PSU to control the ball more with the run and keep them off the field.
McGloin is significantly better than Bolden. I can’t believe I wasted weeks of my life this fall debating with people who felt differently.
A bunch of nothing plays, and two long passes — one a semi-broken play, the other a huge HURRRR in our secondary. But PSU’s defense was making some plays out there. They’re playing alone, though. Bolden is too much of an anchor, and nobody else is really helping on offense aside from Justin Brown.
Did you notice that after our first touchdown, the defense seemed to play much better? It’s almost as though moving the football and giving your defense rest improves their play.
Houston is not the better team if Penn State has a quarterback who can take advantage of 8 and 9 guys playing in the box.
We’ve already played this game against Northwestern. The difference is that Northwestern’s receivers were better and McGloin played well because he’s a superior quarterback.
McGloin is as good as Kevin Thompson. I feel confident in saying this. Both McGloin and Thompson were and are capable of giving PSU’s defense enough rest.
Honestly, we had four (or was it five?) three-and-outs to start the game and that was because of one man.
Bolden is terrible and has no business starting anywhere, AND gets zero help from those around him. It’s like watching Matt Senneca again. Even when he threw a rare beautiful pass, it would be dropped.
I also felt the same way last year about the running game
You may recall that Royster suddenly had holes to run through once McGloin started playing. Maybe it was just a coincidence or the threat of a passing game to open things up for the running game. I feel it was the latter.
It’s even funnier to think that we really ought to have beaten Nebraska too. MSU probably would have rolled us in the B1G title game, but we would have been in another bowl game to boot.
But again Moye didn’t play the ball for shit. Bryant Johnson would have gone up and got that. That’s why Bryan Johnson was a first round pick, and Moye’s going to be an UFA who gets cut in training camp.
I started out stating that the ball was horribly underthrown. Mills absolutely underthrew them that badly. And BJ made plays on them. But BJ also seemed to anticipate the underthrows – I was never sure if they were intentional or not – I just assumed not and BJ was ridiculous.
Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise; Houston is a mediocre football team with players who celebrate and preen like high school players. Houston’s receivers are worse than Northwestern’s.
The problem with this game is that our quarterback is a high school quarterback. That’s it. That’s why we’re losing.
he’s planning on using that graduating senior can transfer rule and play at PSU next year once we announce Jim Harbaugh as our next coach after he wraps up his super bowl win in a few weeks.
I have a bad feeling that either the coaching search really has been kept under wraps and we’ll all be pleasantly surprised, or this is just another sign that PSU administration has no idea what they’re doing.
And we’ll see a lot more of losing to CUSA teams in bowl games (if we can go)
1. Bolden is terrible.
2. If Jones wanted to play he would have gotten his act together and got his grades up to par. He has had 2 years to do it.
2. McGloin isn’t the answer although he is our best eligible guy.
But what do you want people to do? We’re losing like dogcrap to a bunch of punks who couldn’t get into the Big 12 and it’s almost totally because our quarterback play is the worst I’ve ever seen at Penn State.
I really hope the next coach is watching and realizes that Devon Smith should be given a track scholarship and should have his football scholarship revoked
On that one I thought Devon was running straight down the field
and the ball was thrown too wide. Devon tried to adjust, but couldn’t get over far enough and find the ball and bring it in with two hands. Tough adjustment, but a D1 WR is expected to get to it. I know what you’re talking about – I just don’t think that happened on that play. Could be wrong though.
Now to do what Penn State does best: the behind-the-scenes work to get ready for next year and prepare to represent the school, students, alumni, and fans with the same dignity as always.
My girlfriend and I were just sitting next to Darren Perry at the bar
And we didn’t even know it. Walked out with 10 minutes left saying, “I just can’t even watch anymore.” Super nice guy though. He only mentioned he went to Penn State and was class of 1992, before our time haha.
and would be a good HC for Penn State, imho, Aurabass. Personally, this has been two months of Hell, part of which has to have been our coaches looking over their shoulders at the search committee, and wondering what is going to happen to them.
Plus, the kids’ attention has been elsewhere. There was a report that even Silas Redd, our good RB, thought about transferring! Too many uncertainties, with no clarity to help clear ANY of the fog.
Still a good to great DC, but I think his ability as an HC is still up in the air. Tough to judge someone’s job performance when they aren’t really given a fair shot
Leaving those timeouts up there still annoys the hell out of me. No excuse for that, unless, you know, you’re giving up.
Scrap realized a win was just not in the cards for us. It’s like some days at work for me: I have big plans to get a bunch of stuff done, but then I get a phone call or e-mail that starts the train wreck. I end up just trying to survive the day, with hopes for a better tomorrow.
Still, we weren’t out of the game into the 4th quarter, technically. As a HC, I feel like if you use one of those timeouts to stop the clock, it gives the impression that you still think you have a shot. And if that impression rubs off on just one player who sets one block that leads to a big run, then momentum swings back in your favor, all because you called a timeout to draw up a play.
Not saying that we would have won if Scrap had called a timeout, but at least give the players a shot, even if they’ve been getting stomped up and down the field all day.
I don’t know, I’ve wanted Bradley to get the job ever since he took over, he’s done a great job under very rough circumstances, but laying down like that when we weren’t out of it mathematically yet just annoys me.
it was some stupid Gen Ed, creative writing or something ridiculous. We had to come up with alliterations for our names (Ridiculous Redd, Stupendous Still, you get the idea) and then write something building off of that.
So we had to present these things at the end of it, and of course, Morelli’s is a gem: Awesome Morelli. The professor just stared at him. It was fantastic.
I’d like to hit the “fast forward” button for the rest of this month. The new HC will undoubtedly make huge changes, and while some may be for the better (better OCs, maybe), the turmoil will be huge.
He would not retire (!) and was senile. He would drift from English into Polish. Would forget where he was in Mass an start all over. The poor alter boys had no idea what to do most of the time.
He was a really nice man. Always smiling (drunk). And he never touched a kid inappropriately.
In some ways I loved this team and in others I hated them. Mostly I loved this team despite being so painful to watch. That being said I’m glad the season is over.
So, if the curse of Mt. Nittany led to the dark years
How bad is the curse of ‘Firing Joe Paterno ’cause ESPN hates child abuse(at select institutions)’ gonna be? I hope no worse than Nebraska to now, but I’m more than a little concerned.
At this point, I'm wondering if all of their Plan A choices have turned them down
And now they’re sitting their with their thumbs up their asses trying to figure out what to do. Because they know the alumni backlash they’ll get for hiring Bill O’whateverhisnameis over Scrap.
The only hope I have in this whole process is Russ Rose. I have great faith in him, and I hope he doesn’t let us down.
I still think Bolden may have been better had he really been given the job early
But now, I think it’s best for all involved if he just left. Even with a new staff, I think there will still be too much resentment and memories for him to get over the mental block. Let him go somewhere else and hopefully find success
Clearly he wasn’t mentally able to handle that. Now he’s damaged goods as long as he stays. He still might not turn into a good (or even decent) QB, but the revolving door early in the system did him no favors.
this isn’t a failing on Bolden’s part, or that he isn’t a terrible QB right now. A mentally stronger person wouldn’t have been affected, or even been motivated by the competition. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have at least been serviceable.
For your consideration as next HC:

hbeach08 - January 2, 2012
If McGloin plays I think we'd win this game.
Total inability to get a first down is the vast majority of the problem.
jesse. - January 2, 2012
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
elefantstn - January 2, 2012
McGloin is awful
Why is it that watching Bolden’s awfulness causes people to forget how bad McGloin is.
That doesn’t even begin to encompass the missed blocks and general cluelessness of our line.
elefantstn - January 2, 2012
How do you not understand the difference between the two?
McGloin, not great. Bolden is the worst quarterback to ever start a game for Penn State. I can’t think of another quarterback, for any team, that Bolden is better than.
Get two first downs and flip field position, give the defense some time to rest and adjust, and this is a different game.
jesse. - January 2, 2012
Exactly my point.
I’d like to apologize for Chris for underestimating just how much Bolden sucks.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
I understand the difference
But it’s not enough to make this offense score 4 TDs. Field position doesn’t matter, they are going 80 yards at will.
McG is marginally less awful, but not remotely competent.
elefantstn - January 2, 2012
That's really not true.
They have two long passes, three field goals and two missed field goals.
jesse. - January 2, 2012
Yes.
Oh, yeah, and I love how Keenum acts like he’s Joe Montana for that broken coverage before halftime. Douche.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
Well, he is roughly as old as Joe Montana.
icavalera - January 2, 2012
They have 563 yards of total offense
That is not “we need a couple first downs” territory.
elefantstn - January 2, 2012
Yards aren't points.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
30 points are points
We didn’t get that against anyone except NW this year
elefantstn - January 2, 2012
Houston is winning because Penn State can't move the ball.
Penn State can’t move the ball because Rob Bolden is terrible.
It’s that simple.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
Rob Bolden is not terrible
He’s worse than that
Horse N Buggy - January 2, 2012
This is the worst quarterbacking performance I have ever seen in all of my years of watching Penn State football. Nothing has ever been this bad.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
Could not agree more
Really nowhere to go but up from Bolden
Horse N Buggy - January 2, 2012
McGloin last year was worse
He had just as many shoulda-been pick sixes plus 2 actual pick sixes plus three more picks.
It’s hard to believe people can forget all this, or that it bothers me so much that they do.
elefantstn - January 2, 2012
Dude, McGloin scored 24 points and *moved the football*
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
24 points - 14 points for Florida
That works out to less than Bolden so far today.
elefantstn - January 2, 2012
Yeah, he also *MOVED THE FOOTBALL*
If the Wisconsin game compared to Sparty’s games against that same team taught us anything, it’s that you must move the football and rest your defense to have a chance against good offenses.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012

The McGloin/Bolden debate is so over its ridiculous.
I was a STRONG Bolden supporter and believe me I know I was wrong.
McGloin is ten times the quarterback Bolden will ever be.
I think McGloin shreds that Houston Defense. Bolden was pathetic.
The Heel - January 2, 2012
Agreed
was huge Bolden guy last year and going into this one, but he played his way out of it
hbeach08 - January 2, 2012

The previsous record for most yards allowed passing in a bowl game...
was Ty Detmer, against Penn State. And we won.
jesse. - January 2, 2012
THAT was a fun game.
But we actually had a somewhat competent offense in that one.
icavalera - January 2, 2012
This is what I was saying before the game
Penn State routinely gives up millions of passing yards and wins anyway. It’s a tradition.
But, as someone just said, “we actually had a somewhat competent offense in that game.”

When the opposing QB has 10X the number of completions

KT was a 5.5

1998: 1691 yds 121-226 .535% 6 TD 8 INT
Thompson was a much more credible downfield threat, too. Liked him. Hung in and took a ton of hits in his career.
Chris Grovich - January 2, 2012
McGloin
2011 125-231 1571y 54.1% 8 TD 5 INT

then throw up McG and KT’s career #‘s. I’m curious.
I know KT’s record was better as a starter though without looking it up
hbeach08 - January 2, 2012
this performance has people pining for McGloin
I have bad news…McG sucks too…just not as bad this year
hbeach08 - January 2, 2012
KT was wildly underrated by our fanbase.
And by “underrated” I mean people remember him as terrible when he was actually kind of decent.
McGloin’s a notch below Thompson, IMO.
Chris Grovich - January 2, 2012
Who's Kevin Thompson?
Do you mean Kevin Newsome?
Mr. Rosewater - January 2, 2012

It’s even funnier to think that we really ought to have beaten Nebraska too. MSU probably would have rolled us in the B1G title game, but we would have been in another bowl game to boot.
Very strange year…

hbeach08 - January 2, 2012
2nd missed TD
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 2, 2012
Terribly underthrown
But again Moye didn’t play the ball for shit. Bryant Johnson would have gone up and got that. That’s why Bryan Johnson was a first round pick, and Moye’s going to be an UFA who gets cut in training camp.
PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
This! He needs to make some sort of play for that ball!
lexi1031 - January 2, 2012
If you think any receiver would have done anything other than get called for offensive pass interference, you're crazy.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
Tell me how that play was different than all the plays BJ used to make on Mills'
underthrown ducks into triple coverage.
PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
You're blaming the wrong guy and that's dumb.
But, anyway, Mills never underthrew them that badly.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
I'm blaming both of them.
I started out stating that the ball was horribly underthrown. Mills absolutely underthrew them that badly. And BJ made plays on them. But BJ also seemed to anticipate the underthrows – I was never sure if they were intentional or not – I just assumed not and BJ was ridiculous.
PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
Moye had them beat deep.
If he anticipates an underthrow and Bolden throws it where it should be, then we miss out on a TD.
ppfcpp - January 2, 2012
Moye was running full speed and gthat ball was underthrown by 10 yards
There’s only so much he can do to comeback to the ball. He was slowing down, but you can only get back so far.
ppfcpp - January 2, 2012
I don't have any way to replay it, so that's probably fair. I still think BJ would have made
that play.
PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
It's possible but I think there are very, very few players who could make that play
I certainly wouldn’t blame Moye for not getting to it, that’s for sure.
ppfcpp - January 2, 2012
Bolden is really good at completing passes to the other team
psu_all_day - January 2, 2012
Moye literally stood there and watched that ball get picked off

PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
Houston sucks.

ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 2, 2012
There was wisdom in not playing this game.
I have a bad feeling that either the coaching search really has been kept under wraps and we’ll all be pleasantly surprised, or this is just another sign that PSU administration has no idea what they’re doing.
And we’ll see a lot more of losing to CUSA teams in bowl games (if we can go)

PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
Fera has had to punt a dozen times.
He’s gotta be getting tired.
mvrck - January 2, 2012 via Android app
All of our qb's need to go
1. Bolden is terrible.
2. If Jones wanted to play he would have gotten his act together and got his grades up to par. He has had 2 years to do it.
2. McGloin isn’t the answer although he is our best eligible guy.
bbpennstate10 - January 2, 2012
IMO McGloin COULD be the answer if he could improve his consistency.
When he’s on, he’s really very good. He has large lapses though where he’s just not accurate enough. Then he forces things and sucks.
Unfortunately, I think it’s pretty rare for that to improve.
PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
it would also be cool
if he wasn’t a puink asshole who got knocked out by one of his own receivers
hbeach08 - January 2, 2012
Well, yeah.
Though we really don’t know how much was McGloin’s fault and how much was Drake’s fault. He could certainly grow up some more, though.
PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
A receiver trying to make amends by the way
When someone’s trying to make amends and you’re STILL being a tool says something about his character
Mr. Rosewater - January 2, 2012
That's true.
But what do you want people to do? We’re losing like dogcrap to a bunch of punks who couldn’t get into the Big 12 and it’s almost totally because our quarterback play is the worst I’ve ever seen at Penn State.
ReadingRambler - January 2, 2012
Today's issues...

GMac14 - January 2, 2012

Should have caught it though. Adjustment was too tough for it to be a TD. He would have fallen down if he had caught it.
PSUEnrg02 - January 2, 2012
He runs himself out of passes like that all the time
It’s weird, he misjudges and runs himself under where the pass is coming down
elefantstn - January 2, 2012
On that one I thought Devon was running straight down the field
and the ball was thrown too wide. Devon tried to adjust, but couldn’t get over far enough and find the ball and bring it in with two hands. Tough adjustment, but a D1 WR is expected to get to it. I know what you’re talking about – I just don’t think that happened on that play. Could be wrong though.

If you want to leave timeouts on the board in a bowl game
then yes.
LAPSU - January 2, 2012
It would be for DC not Head Coach
aurabass - January 2, 2012
Scrap is a great DC
and would be a good HC for Penn State, imho, Aurabass.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 2, 2012
Agreed
Still a good to great DC, but I think his ability as an HC is still up in the air. Tough to judge someone’s job performance when they aren’t really given a fair shot
Leaving those timeouts up there still annoys the hell out of me. No excuse for that, unless, you know, you’re giving up.
LAPSU - January 2, 2012
LAPSU, I think
Scrap realized a win was just not in the cards for us. It’s like some days at work for me: I have big plans to get a bunch of stuff done, but then I get a phone call or e-mail that starts the train wreck. I end up just trying to survive the day, with hopes for a better tomorrow.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 2, 2012
Haha, totally get that analogy
Still, we weren’t out of the game into the 4th quarter, technically. As a HC, I feel like if you use one of those timeouts to stop the clock, it gives the impression that you still think you have a shot. And if that impression rubs off on just one player who sets one block that leads to a big run, then momentum swings back in your favor, all because you called a timeout to draw up a play.
Not saying that we would have won if Scrap had called a timeout, but at least give the players a shot, even if they’ve been getting stomped up and down the field all day.
I don’t know, I’ve wanted Bradley to get the job ever since he took over, he’s done a great job under very rough circumstances, but laying down like that when we weren’t out of it mathematically yet just annoys me.

smashmouthsteel - January 2, 2012
I had a class with Morelli once
it was some stupid Gen Ed, creative writing or something ridiculous.
Moral of the story: Morelli was a mongoloid.

JIMPSU - January 2, 2012
I still think Bolden may have been better had he really been given the job early
But now, I think it’s best for all involved if he just left. Even with a new staff, I think there will still be too much resentment and memories for him to get over the mental block. Let him go somewhere else and hopefully find success
bubba0077 - January 2, 2012
Respectfully
you could not be more wrong. He had the job earlier and lost it.
letsgopsu - January 2, 2012
No, he was on the yo-yo
Clearly he wasn’t mentally able to handle that. Now he’s damaged goods as long as he stays. He still might not turn into a good (or even decent) QB, but the revolving door early in the system did him no favors.
bubba0077 - January 2, 2012
He was on the yoyo
cuz he sucked
JIMPSU - January 2, 2012
Bolden doesn't sit on the sidelines during practice and do nothing.
What strikes me is he has shown NO improvement. You don’t improve on Saturdays. You improve Sunday through Friday, and show it on Saturday.
Either he failed, or the coaches failed him. But he’s not even a serviceable signal caller.
MainLion - January 2, 2012
Not saying
this isn’t a failing on Bolden’s part, or that he isn’t a terrible QB right now. A mentally stronger person wouldn’t have been affected, or even been motivated by the competition. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have at least been serviceable.
bubba0077 - January 2, 2012

mjs2103 - January 2, 2012

And not complete a screen pass? Star recruits @ Penn State = epic fail.

The problem with screen passes is not just the QB
Our line can’t execute them properly, that’s why McGloin couldn’t do it either.
