Another Weekend, Another Major Recruiting Test For The New Penn State Coaching Staff

via farm7.staticflickr.com

via farm7.staticflickr.com

One week ago, Happy Valley played host to nearly 20 high school football players, the majority of which were current Class of 2012 Penn State commitments. Almost everyone had good things to say, no one decommitted after meeting the new bosses, and it appears that the newly assembled staff passed their first test.

This weekend, more visitors arrive on campus, only this time, they're all prospective prospects. With Signing Day rapidly approaching and Penn State sitting tenuously on 15 commitments, the staff will have to work hard to save the Class of 2012.

At least six visitors are confirmed for this weekend's visit, and all six are relatively new faces to those that follow Penn State recruiting. Taking over in Happy Valley with just a month left wasn't easy for the new staff, so quickly finding available prospects was the first order. Ohio State may be signing top-level commit on a seemingly daily basis, but the recruits left on Penn State's radar seem to be solid contributors that can hopefully make a difference in Happy Valley.

Star-divide

A couple of players from Maryland's Calvert Hall school will be on campus this weekend. If that school sounds familiar, it's because rising sophomore Adrian Amos is an alum, and is close with both WR Trevor Williams and DB Da'Quan Davis. Both recruits are currently WVU commits, but don't be surprised if at least one of them pulls the trigger and joins the Class of '12. In fact, the phrase "Penn State is my dream school" was recently uttered by one of these guys.

Williams is a three-star two-way player, but is being recruited to Penn State as a wide receiver. Davis, also a three-star recruit, is likely a cornerback at the next level. His style meshes well with that of the new defensive coaches, which includes a lot of bump-and-run style play from their corners. Being from Maryland, each were recently pursued by Larry Johnson, Sr.

An old name resurfaces this weekend, as NY RB Akeel Lynch intends to visit. A recent Boston College decommit, Lynch is the running back Penn State needs to take in this class. There haven't been many other names thrown about at the position since the new staff took over, so getting a commitment from Lynch will go a long way to shore up concerns at depth. A three-star back with an impressive slate of offers, Lynch has been talking to Charles London, his potential position coach.

Another position of need in this class is quarterback. Right now, Penn State holds a verbal commitment from PA QB Skyler Mornhinweg, but his commitment and his father's future employment both have Nittany Lion fans nervous that Mornhinweg will never suit up in blue and white. That's why it was somewhat of a relief to see that GA QB Steven Bench would be visiting this weekend, and that a commitment is entirely possible. Bench currently does not have an offer, but I wouldn't be surprised if he not only leaves with one, but also leaves as a member of the Class of '12.

Bench is a two-star pro-style quarterback that seems to be flying under the radar during his recruitment. He has impressed some scouts and has heard from some high-profile teams, including a recent visit from Mississippi State. He is a current commit to Rice.

Potentially looking to bolster the line of scrimmage AND the academic roster, Penn State recently extended an offer to NJ OL Wendy Laurent. (Yes, Wendy. I dare you to say something to his face about it.) Coming from The Hun School in Princeton, Laurent does not have an impressive offer sheet, but the three-star lineman has been getting looks from many programs. Further, with a new, established offensive line coach (a SINGLE OFFENSIVE LINE COACH), anything is possible.

Finally, another familiar name will be on campus, and another addition might soon be made to the father-son list of players at Penn State. WR Jonathan Warner will be here looking to follow in his father Curt's big shoes. Warner has been working with a personal trainer in his home near Seattle, and has been impressing some onlookers late in the game. They can keep looking, though, as Warner seems to be all Penn State.

Admittedly, I have not read Black Shoe Diaries since its inception (sorry, Old Mike), so I don't know if we've ever witnessed what might shortly go down. Of the six names mentioned, there is a good possibility that as many as four will commit by Monday. Have we ever done a two-siren post? We might soon find out.

Additionally, the staff has been going after some other, more highly sought after recruits, including some committed elsewhere. The return interest level for some of these guys remains questionable, but it has been confirmed that the staff has, at the very least, contacted the following athletes:

  • MD CB Ronald Darby - uncommitted; has ruled PSU out, but you have to love the new staff's effort here
  • IN QB Gunner Kiel - Notre Dame (by way of Indiana AND LSU); is enrolled at Notre Dame after a weird recruitment, but again, love the effort
  • NY QB Chad Kelly - Clemson
  • TN QB Chad Voytik - Pitt
  • PA DB Will Parks - Pitt
  • AL LB Beau Hankins - uncommitted
  • AL LB Harding Harper - uncommitted
  • PA DE Evan Schwan - uncommitted

Coach O'Brien recently gave a free interview to Fight On State in which he discussed his recruiting philosophies. There is a lot of good information there, but the part that stuck out to me was his answer to the question about recruiting areas for each coach (emphasis mine):

[Mark Brennan, editor, FightOnState.com]: In the past, Penn State has really focused on a 300-mile radius (around State College). Is that something that will continue? Do you kind of have to keep your own house in order first before looking outside? Or do you look outside immediately?

[Coach O'Brien]: There's three main (things) we have to do to make sure we have the best program in the Big Ten. Number one is we've got to take care of that 300-mile radius. We've got to do a great job in the state of Pennsylvania. We've got to be able to go into Ohio. We've got to be able to go into Chicago. We've got to be able to go into New England and New York. And then, the mid-Atlantic states, especially with the job Larry Johnson has done recruiting in the Baltimore/D.C. area. That's definitely one of the objectives.

Then we've got to do a great job of recruiting the East Coast. So we're going to have three or four coaches in the state of Florida. We're going to have two coaches in the state of Georgia. (They'll be) looking for the types of guys we think will be a great fit for Penn State. But we've got to build our program, the foundation of our program, has to be with prospects from that 300-mile radius. Then we have to go down to Florida and Georgia and use the connections that we all have from when we recruited for different schools and find some Penn State players.

Then the third category I would say is anybody on our staff, including me, who has a connection to a guy who is playing in Texas or maybe California. Maybe it's an alum's son or something like that. We definitely will look to other parts of the country. But we have to concentrate on the East Coast.

Today's Pop Quiz: Name the last time Penn State signed a player from each of these four named states. Getting into new areas seems to be a priority for these coaches, and that is a fantastic first step. Hopefully by the end of today, we'll add a Washington state commit, two Marylands, a New Jersey, a New York, and one Georgia gunslinger.

Stay tuned as we learn more from what should be an action packed weekend.

Any word on how Cam and Armani's visit to OSU went?

Also, love to see the staff going after Kiel and Kelly, and I can’t wait to see what kind of QB BOB can pull in 2013, when he actually has a full year to recruit.

Also, UPDATE

The staff dropped in on Devin Fuller yesterday. None of these three (Kiel, Kelly or Fuller) will end up at PSU. But they’re really putting on the press. Can’t wait to see what they can do in a full year, especially with a likelihood of an early, highly rated commit that could help rally the class in Adam Breneman.

Where is Fuller going?
Rutgers vs. Arizona.

Rutgers is close to home and allows him to fulfill his dream of being an actual QB, while AZ would be a perfect fit in RichRod’s offense. My money is on Rutgers.

Wow,

Fuller running the RR would actually be a pretty frightening thought if I’m in that conference. Why on earth (from a football perspective) would he go to Rutgers if that’s on the table?

Close to home and he wants to be a pro-style QB.
Yeah, I would have guessed that would be the reasoning.

But isn’t he barely six foot and not even 200?

Seems to me the path to the NFL is not being the next Drew Brees, but rather being the next Pat White and stealing some paychecks as somebody’s gamble. Hell, if he goes to Arizona the Raiders might give him a couple hundred thousand right now. Wildcat gamble aside, the exposure as the dynamic running QB still allows him to go the Cribbs/RandleEl/Eddelman route too.

Cam Newton, Cam Newton, Cam Newton
No word from Cam/Armani yet.

Will update if/when I hear anything.

No Word Yet

But both Michigan and OSU blogs assume they have both of them in the bag.

So does that mean

we panic and claim the end of the world, or assume we have them in the bag as well? What’s the precedent here?

Might as well follow the crowd.

No way we lose Cam and Armani. It’s in the bag.

When in doubt, swag it out.
One out of two?

Cam Williams has announced his intention to be a *uckeye.

With regards to panic/end of the world...

may I remind everyone of one QB great out of Jeanette? How’d that work out? :)

Don't remind me.....
If he had lost all three to PSU, would have been perfect

No MNC. No Heisman. Brought down a program and a coach (though not for long wrt the former). Wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out that he was a double agent for us or UM.

Even if they don't land some of these recruits...

…I am still very excited to see what this new coaching staff and attitude can do with the existing players.

Is Wendy short of Wendell...

Or is it really Wendy?

When are parents going to think about having to grow up with the insane names they give their babies?

At least it's not "Wendi"

with an “i” that was dotted with a heart . . .

It's Wendy.

My first year of law school I did an externship with the Allegheny (Pittsburgh) County Family Courts (side note: don’t ever do this; the only thing it taught me professionally was that I did not want to be a family attorney). The judge I worked for said she had a lot of great kid’s names come through, but the best was Shithead (pronounced “Shi-tAID”).

Yes.

I will try to source

but a woman in Florida, I think it was, got pissed because school officials and teachers were mispronouncing her daughter’s name, which was “La-a”. Folks were calling her “Leia” and stuff like that. The mother said, "It’s pronounced “La-DASH-a!!”"

Oooooooookkkkkkaaaaayyyyyy.

Not just in FLA

My sister is a high school teacher in Philly and she has had at least 1 student with a pronounced dash in her name.

To jump on

The old story were the twins named OrangeJello and LemonJello. The mother corrected the clerk and said that they were pronounced O Ran Jaa Lo and Laa Mon Jaa Lo. (Wish I could have phonetically made it look better)

You should see a class roster in Louisiana.
I am never going to say anything about anyone's name...

Since my daughters name Is Calamity Jaye…

D'Anton Lynn was from Texas
But he wasn't the most recent.

Texas is the easy of the four. The other three will prove more difficult.

Fera most recent?

Or was he from Michigan? And do kickers even count?

WE HAVE A WINNER FOR TEXAS.
Woops ^^^^

Missed this. I read it as “For most recent?” Although I don’t regret getting to reference Junny’s favorite beverage.

I'll give everyone a hint:

Junny’s favorite beverage.

Lydell Sargent?

California

Not the most recent.
I would have guessed him too.

Literally the only one I can remember.

Didn’t we grab some anonymous TE filler out of GA at some point?

BLARGH SERVERS!

I was trying to say Sargent is the only one I remember from Cali . . . ever?

Didn’t we grab some anonymous GA QB at some point? Someone with good offers that we switched to possession WR? Can’t quite grab a name here . . .

It did show up after all once I refreshed.

Forget it, I’m going to do something less interactive. . . stare at pictures of food in Thursday Tailgate or something.

We have a walk on QB from Cali
Wording

“prospective prospects”

C’mon man!

Welcome to the Department of Redundancy Department!
Jordan Lyons latest from Georgia?
That's the bloke.

Switched positions and barely played or something right?

Correct

Played QB in high school at something like 6’5, 245. Got moved to tight end at Penn State and never played.

WINNER

Still waiting for California and Florida

Cali

Was it the QB Zac something or other, came in the same class as Mills. Or have we had one from there since then?

That was Wasserman

or something similar. Did he ever set foot on campus?

I thought he did

but got lost in the shuffle. Junny would probably have the answer to that.

I think he played in a Blue White game.

IIRC, he transferred out because his mom got sick with cancer, or something like that, and he wanted to be close to home for her.

josh matzkin?
for florida that is
Looking for scholarship guys.

But I suppose this would win for ANY player from Florida.

Josh Waitzkin?

(Ok, in attempting a smartass injection, I uncovered this interesting photo of the chess prodigy & the RZA; if you’re interested in a threadtangent check this 2008 article in psychology today)(/returns to recruiting thoughts)

Bong Bong.
And I believe I probably meant interjection instead of injection

Wasn’t Derrick Williams or Justin King originally from Cali?

Nein

King from Western PA
DWheels from Beltsville, MD

Williams supposedly signed with the Steelers.

A little shocking, but good luck DW.

Other way around...

Sargeant was originally from W. Pa and moved to Cali.

I think the most important question is

will BOB and his staff continue recruiting the hotbed of Scranton?

I think JoePa used to say 500 mile radius

But these are beyond that even.

Mike Mauti – Louisiana
Ryan Nowicki – Arizona

Does any remember...

Mac Morrison – Washington State.
And is he the only WA player prior to Curt Warner’s kid?

Is the answer to Florida never?
No, there is one since at least 2002.
Apologies, you are correct

WINNER for Florida.

Haha.

Soooooooo sad.

That almost brings a tear to my eye.

And not in a good way.

You're saying there are none from FLA?
Not in the last 10 years, at least.

Which is how far back Scout goes in tracking commits of scholarship players. I’m sure we’ve had one AT SOME POINT. But the point of the comment was that it’s been awhile.

Willie Smith? LB from the '94 team. Pretty sure he was from FL.

Don’t know if there have been any that are more recent, though.

10 years is a mighty long time

Michael Timpson, a sprinter from Florida, made a big splash as a recuit back in the mid ’80s.

Timpson was a good receiver

He went on to play for New England and Philadelphia.

John Wilson from Florida?
Ako Poti

was from Cali. Never really contributed.

Oh man,

forgot the JUCOs. SFCC right?

Also, didn’t he play RT in 2009?

If I remember correctly,

he played some due to injuries. I also remember a DUI or underage or something. Joe’s doghouse kind of stuff.

Poti's biggest contribution may have been

a DUI (or similar, he was legal to drink). He was driving a pick-em-up truck with Montana, not Cali, plates while he was here. PSU probably has never-ever recruited anybody out of Montana! He actually did play a fair amount of minutes but never a road-grader.

Still, he might make an all name team in central PA, though not in Cali or places like that.

Boom

And there you go.

Maurice Evans might quibble with you on 'contributed'
Actually

I may have this jacked up. Was Poti one of the ones in that apt where the doob debris was found in the trash can with Evans? Or am I mixing him up with Koroma? Or were they both there?

/gossip boy’d

I believe that was Koroma
And not Poti at all?
The only "bad news" I remember about Poti

Was the DUI thing. I also remember those Montana plates on the car which I though was wierd.

Ok

Yeah, I think I jacked that up. Apologies for mis-applied slandering.

Well.

Certainly not impressed with this recruiting class in any way, but that was largely expected. That said, however, I am excited for future recruiting at Penn State. I like BOB’s philosophy and a younger coaching staff overall. I feel like these guys will get out and get after it, even in areas we haven’t touched with recruiting in the past. Bring it, Urban.

Bob just wants his coaches to get University paid,

working vacations to FL in Feb-March. All businesses do things like that. Training programs on cruise ships, business meetings at Disney World….

That’s all sarcasm. I really, I hope they can make some inroads down there.

A couple things

1. Dude is nailing these interviews. Can’t tell of course if it was he who insisted they be of the free variety or not, but it’s important that they are. And he’s nailing them.
2. Basetouching with no-chance, committed-elsewheres is very interesting. At first glance, it could be spun as shady, but this quote from the BWI article the other day has me thinking differently:

Bauer: Has the recruit reception to you been largely positive?
O’Brien: I haven’t had one negative experience in recruiting. Again, I think recruiting is about being honest and telling them everything about your program. Things that are great about your program, things that we need to work on in this program. I think if you’re honest with these parents and their sons, I think you’ve got a better chance of those guys coming to Penn State. The one thing I’m never going to be is a used car salesman. I grew up 30 minutes north of Boston. I come from an Irish family. There wasn’t a lot of BS in my family. Nobody I’ve ever worked for has been full of you know what. So, I just think honesty is the best policy, and that’s what we’re going to do. We’re not going to talk about other schools. We’ve got great schools in this conference to compete against, but we’re going to talk about Penn State and how we’re going to do things.
So, I’m going with this tactic is smart and builds infrastructure in both the future player & current HS coaches networks.
3. We can never have enough Da’Quan’s on this team

Agreed

I think he’s just trying to get his name out there, get people talking about him and the staff. That way, kids will talk to kids and help us in the long haul.

Can't wait for the BSD interview

And it better be free…

That'd be hilarious!

Junny, fresh off his recent Bloomberg fame, scores a sit down and….then charges us to read it!

Hey, I got mouths to feed.
Exactly!

The Sprewell opportunities would be legion!

Actually

At this rate, BOB would probably insist on some final perestroika and only grant a blogger interview to the combo of Junny & Fugi.

But only after a fight to the death

BLOGGERDOME!!! Two men enter, only one leaves.

fixed

BLOGGERDOME!!! Two men bloggers enter, only one leaves.

CA - I remember a QB from there who ended up transferring out. Zac Wasserman?

He was early 2000’s, and I think he was in the same class as Zack Mills.

Gosh, read the comments
Saw the Poti comments right after I posted this, of course.
I meant the fact that

I had already mentioned a Zac something or other that came in the class with Mills. Mainly because I want to toot my own horn.

i thought you had to be double jointed or something to do that.
Or be Visanthe Shiancoe
don't know the reference,

but i’m sure i shouldn’t be googling it from work.

That would be correct

Just know, he’s the kind of guy that would know the urinal water was cold. And deep.

Ut oh

Next thing you know Ben Jones’ll be droppin in here to share what he knows about Maybin’s jewelry.

so what you're saying

is that he’ll never need a cane to help him walk.

Think tripod...

Never falls down when drunk for some reason.

Ah, I see. I totally missed that one.

And here I thought I was the special one for remembering Wasserman.

Watch your mouth Jman!
Do we need to have

a good old fashioned donnybrook after some corn likker jtot?

I believe we may

And I’m not the one going all potty mouth, droppin Goshes left and right.

This is a family blog for fuck’s sake.

I apologize for the error of my ways

I will try my damndest to never let it happen again.

Hey, have you seen Bman play recently?
No I have not

I keep getting invites but I’ve either been out of town or had previous engagements.

I get the Facebook invites,

but it’s usually a little far for me to travel to go see him play (Still appreciate the invites, BMAN)!

Playin next friday, 27th, at Fox's West End, on the west side of chambersburg on the point

old man hours, woo hoo, 6-9. Great biker/dive bar with excelllent food, hbeach would love it. Go for the crab nachos or the prime rib and the house salad dressing is a home made sweet and sour. Sue makes her own vinagers. There are pool tables, electronic hunting machine, electronic bowling machine, bar games (yes hbeach the old strip match game) and darts. I think they keep the darts behind the bar when I’m playing.

I will shamelessly advertise.

I'm assuming this is music-related.

What are you jamming, BMAN?

ABBA deep cuts
Ouch.

That makes me glad I am nine hours away from there.

Of course, I should talk: I’m rocking to Nilsson right now.

/retro

my repetoire includes:

Lots of Grateful Dead, Dylan, Neil Young, Jackson Browne
Some Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Band, LIttle Feat, Hot Tuna, New Riders, Rober Cray, Keb Mo
Some folk artists like Tom Waits, Eric Anderson, Croce, Bromberg, John Prine
A couple by Pearl Jam, Live, Nirvana
and some new artists like David Gray, Ray Lamontaigne, Amos Lee, Ryan Adams and Decemberists
A few other songs of whatever genre you want lump that into.

Can you do

Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page”? He really puts an edge on that song.

If not, how about Pachelbel’s Canon?

I play Turn the Page

have to turn up the reverb but it works.
My son plays cello and I’ve been working on the grandsons but it looks like the youngest may try to play strings but that is it, so no Pachelbel

Very nice.

Like I said, that is one song that I never get tired of hearing.

That's my song!!

as in turn Paige over? resist sexual harassment, you have been trained…..

if you get to the northern tier i definitely want to know
I thought about heading up to where I graduated high school and trying that area

Mifflinburg, Lewisburg but I don’t really know places north of there.

Lycoming County --

my home turf.

played little league in Old Lycoming Twshp

but never drank when I lived there. Williamsport is a bout a 3 hour drive. I would want some decent $$$ to play a 3.5 or 4 hour show. I really am looking to play 2 times a month, maybe three this summer but I do have a real job. The accoustic solo act is gaining ground again in my area, as it was pretty big in the 80’s when I started. I didn’t play out from 95 to this past summer do to kids and stuff but go back into this past summer and have no kids to worry about so I’m just getting back into it.

i'm north of there yet

Bradford County, current home to pipeliners, roughnecks and drillers.

find me an outdoor venue at Pine Creek or Grand Canyon next summer and I'll come up.
244, grew up in Ralston --

went to HS in Canton.

C&N Bank in Wellsboro looking for a controller — might apply.

Or, for us formal types,

a Donald Brook.

nah, this would have been an old Blue Mountain League showdown with James Buchanon and Wayneboro throwing thunder punches.
Ha

Somehow it seems like the Rocket would obliterate the Indian

wif I knew how to post a gif it would be of a rocket falling over on the launch pad and I would disagree.
Just for that

I’m coming to Fox’s to heckle and throw tomaters.

small pitchers of Yeungling are 4.50
I thought Morninwheg was pretty solid

What’s the deal with that?

He's remaining very quiet.

I think the staff may be hedging their bets. Two QBs wouldn’t be terrible. Zero QBs would be bad.

"Zero QBs would be bad."

But as we’ve seen this year, we can get by with 2 half-QBs

You know, if we could stick Bolden and McGloin in some sort of teleportation machine, like in the Fly, we might be OK for next year.

you're suggesting we combine them into one?

I shudder to think about that outcome.

The horror! The horror!

Well, you either get the best qualities of both

and end up with a serviceable QB, or the worst of both and end up with a monstrosity (like The Fly). Monstrosity might be OK though, if we can get it locked in a room with the BoT.

Worst of both may not all bad

Then, McBolden would throw the sure-interception on the out route into the dirt, saving a pick-6.

It's McGlolden

get it right.

McGloden

sounds too much like an Irish Al Golden. BOB is all the irish coaching we need.

And if they were the worst qualities

it would be McGLOLden

That would normally be an acceptable compromise,

but until we have another QB in place, this reality is still too fresh to be humorous

If we got the best qualities of both

we’d probably be doing ok (maybe). Bolden’s arm’s obviously much stronger, but I’d say Mcgloin’s got better mobility, confidence and decision making (shudder…). You’d basically have Brett Favre.

If you combined the worst qualities, you’d have a weak-armed timid QB that throws the ball softly into the arms of the defensive line, or constantly takes 10 yard sacks. I don’t think the BoT would be very scared of that.

perhaps not

but it strikes fear into the heart of me

Oh, it's been tried

Joe tried it in September.

was bolden his tail?

or his excrement?

McGloin's face is all.....

I don’t think anyone’s looking. Nope. No one will notice…….

kinda like, whew, that one is gonna stink, shouldn't have mixed the corn beef and cabbage with carbombs
I can confirm that I am visiting Penn State this weekend

sadly, however, i strongly doubt that I will meet any of the coaches.

Who's hosting you?
Did we ever get a full assessment of new coaching staff cuteness?
I think they're still working on the hugability index

LARRY JOHNSON RATES A 5 STAR

We have a clear winner

Coach Godsey.

BUT SERIOUSLY – we’re in the process of creating a Coach Butler fan club – we already have a president (surprisingly not me) and a rec from GoPSUTony – he’s actually the one who first mentioned the fan club…

I think you guys underestimate just how hard it is to get recruits out of Florida to the north.

And not just Florida, South Florida. Schools like St. Thomas Aquinas, Glades Central, Pahokee, Palm Beach Gardens, Atlantic, Dwyer, Spanish River, Coral Springs High.

Of those I listed, only the last two are public schools in suburban areas. Pahokee and Bell Glade are literally high schools in the middle of gang heavy plantation towns. Yeah, you get decent talent spread throughout the state, but most of the high end talent comes from those schools, and the inner city Miami ones. It is such a completely different lifestyle that you just aren’t going to get many to bite.

And that’s even before taking into consideration grades and the like. I would be very surprised to find many students from Bell Glade that would qualify to go to PSU academically. This isn’t to say they are dumb, but out there, it’s football or drug gangs, and school is a distant third priority.

When Florida, Georgia, Bama etc are loading up on players, these are the guys they are taking. You can rake the rest of the state with a fine tooth comb, and you’ll get a dozen 3-5 star guys a year like Tebow, but you’re still fighting the rest of the country with them.

The trick with recruiting Florida is going to be using it to fill out your class with 3 star guys that may be a bit overshadowed by the amazing 4-5 star recruits. Which means a ton of film analysis, and taking some chances that don’t have OMG STARS.

Somebody watched The Substitute last night!
Not sure if that was supposed to be sarcastic or not.

I grew up in West Palm. I ran track against a lot of these kids, and sat out under the Bleachers in Belle Glade til 2am for many, many track meets over 4 years in high school. I don’t see many of those guys as fitting the PSU mold.

I am glad to know that The Substitute is accurate actually.

Thank you for this.

I can't speak for Miami drug related hits on teachers.

But I knew people from running and soccer that definitely had family deep in the gang shit out in the cane farm area. It got a little better in the more urban parts of Palm Beach County, but you still had trouble spot schools like Lake Worth, Forest Hills and Atlantic that were not “fun” places to go to school.

But by far the worst was out in Pahokee and Glades Central.

How much did Tressell spend on Santonio Holmes?
Less than Auburn spent on CammyCam
A percentage of royalties?

I don't really agree

Yes it may be difficult, but it is not impossible. Ohio State and Michigan regularly pull 4* guys from FL. Theoretically, why can’t PSU?

What? No Pago Pago recruit question?

Answer: Amani Purcell.

I think this should count as the California answer since, you know, it’s west of California.

Malik Golden just reaffirmed.

Was he counted in our 15 “current” commits?

Yes.

But that’s very good news. Didn’t see that, but he was on the fence with Iowa and UConn.

According to Ryan Snyder
We just have to keep PA blue chips here

and not lose them to ND, OSU and MI. It’s one thing to lose a kid to the SEC. Warm weather, hot girls, good football. But losing one to a B1G team (you too, ND) just kills me. We cannot keep passing on and/or losing players like Persa, Nosovitch, Spence, Koyack, etc. And we should be able to get the “best” kids from NJ andMd/Va.

I am optimistic that the youth and energy of Obrien’s coaches will start to get more of these kids.

I have a feeling that nobody will be regretting losing Nosovitch
he is going to be a solid safety
Steven Bench

I’m already dreading the lame puns we’ll have to endure should this guy be a bust.

Johnny was pretty good!

With names like Bench and Wendy, you have to work extra hard to assure you don’t fail.

Any chance that JJ Denman

will give PSU another look? Madison press noted that Denman might be looking at Pitt since former Wisconsin O-line coach Bostad followed Chryst there. Now word is that Bostad may be heading to the Chicago Bears.

I mean, he won't come to Penn State, but Chad Kelly

He's like McGloin

but with talent and ability!

That's really accurate, actually.
Including the MOXIENESS?
Steven Bench was described by a Georgia writer on 247Sports as having a ton of "moxie".

The writer had no idea of the history of that word with Penn State and McGloin. So I hope everyone is ready for some more moxie.

Just what we need

another guy who thinks much too highly of himself to the point he will make completely unfounded comparisons about himself, talk major shite and gets into a verbal altercation and eventual fight with of his WR’s before a freakin bowl game where he gets knocked the F out. Pass on that please.

Or, the writer could be a dork

who does know how “moxie” sets our teeth on edge so is being deliberately provocative, or . . . . .

That's a strange definition of 'moxie'.
I prefer the Italian soda and rental original xboxes of the Moxie Lounge in West Commons

Is that still there?

What about the glass chin?
I'm excited to see what a staff that is determined and willing to put in the time and effort to recruit can do

Last year’s class was hindered because of Joe’s health and the late offers, and then this year’s class was hindered by “it” happening. So the program is in need of a big and productive class to replenish some of the talent that has suffered the past few years.

I think everyone is excited to see what kind of class they can put together, given the resources that PSU has. It just is up to how much effort the coaches want to put in, and from the early indications, this staff is full of effort.

11:00a Update

Nyeem Wartman and Malik Golden have reaffirmed their commitments.
Neither Cam Williams nor Armani Reeves have decommited and/or committed to OSU.
Still no siren, which is slightly surprising, as my No. 1 siren target has supposedly been on campus since this morning.

At this point,

is it safe to say Cam and Armani are at least holding off to meet BOB next weekend?

Glad to hear about Malik.

I had just finished reading about Nyeem’s recommitment before dropping in here.

Hoping we get Cam and Armani, or that, if we don’t, they wind up at Utah State or somewhere far, far away from the B1G.

And are Cam and Armani looking to go to the same school?

I can’t remember if they are from the same school or if Cam just recruited Armani to PSU. Didn’t know OSU had that many spots left to be able to take both if that was the case.

They live in the same area

and attend the same Prep School, a very good school by the way where I have it on good authority that the athletes still have a heavy work load with high academic standards.

That said, I get the impression they don’t necessarily consider themselves a package deal.

IIRC

they thought it would be cool to go to the same place but were not a package deal.

Kind of like the kids in Superbad
Can't source it

but I saw something this past week where A was not as adamant as B about them landing together. If I had to guess, it would be Reeves saying he was not as “concerned” about that as Cam . . . .

Cam's dad is Armani's Godfather as well

I saw that somewhere. Follow both of them on that Twitter thingy.
Armani’s tweets after his Michigan visit seemed a little hollow, meaning he didn’t seem too thrilled.
I take no commitment after having dinner with the Urbanator is a positive sign.

Maybe Urb shoveled spaghetti into his face with his bare hands.
I hope Wartman gets in Cam's ear

and reminds Cam why he convinced him to go to PSU in the first place.

same

Cam also originally convinced Golden to commit as well.

I still think he comes here

I don’t have the twitter but I haven’t seen anything that makes me think he’s out the door.

It's dicey.

The three (Cam, Armani, Cox) could all end up at PSU, OSU, or be split up. It’s really anyone’s guess right now…

Seriously, how many spots does OSU have available?

How the Eff can they be in on so many players after they just got whacked with scholly reductions?
And is it just me that thinks Urban is being a tremendous dick by pilfering all our recruits? I havent heard ONE single recruit that Urban is in on that didnt have ties to PSU….

well, they did just let go two scholarship DBs.
Can anyone source

the Malik Golden recommit? I’m not seeing anything on open, Google-based searches.

I think there was something in the Fanshots about it

Not that anyone reads the fanshots….

Ryan Snyder from BWI

on Twitter.

Back in the day

PSU used to grab players routinely out of Florida and South Carolina. Last quality C guy I can think of was Rodney Kinlaw. Surprised SC was not mentioned as PSU has grabbed a bunch of quality guys from that State. GA is going to be tough…..PSU has never had a strong presence here and UGA, Auburn, Bama and UF have a lockdown on the top talent. As for FL….if BOB wants to have serious success he needs to go make nice with OJ McDuffie. Dude is wired in to South Florida football and could be a huge PSU asset!

I think we were close with Marcus lattimore

out of SC. Believe Joe was actually going to visit him, but then the ol’ HBC swooped in before Joe got there.

Close but we never had a chance

A lot of Southern recruits just don’t like to be that far from home. A good bit of them don’t want to play in cold weather either. Just facts of life PSU has to deal with when recruiting in the South. It really didn’t make a difference as if we landed ML we never would have landed Silas Redd. With our OL issues….Redd is probably the better fit for PSU right now.

I don't think it's just Southern guys who want to stay close to home

We get more than our share of PA, NJ and Maryland guys who want their families to be able to see them play or be within a short drive from home.

Another problem with the south......

in at least GA…..academic standards are low…….(google the recent academic scandal in the Atlanta public schools)…….a lot of potential prospects are going to have issues with meeting PSU academic standards.

Sure.....

no doubt……but I can tell you from talking to high school prospects in the south that it is on a whole different level here.

this really gets to me

As an alum, I can’t fathom not meeting the academic standards. I’m not saying PSU is a breeding ground for the stupid, but you need not be a Rhodes Scholar candidate to attend. Is there something I’m missing here?

Did you attend UP or start in a Satellite school?

UP has overall higher admission standards than satellite locations, and specific majors have requirements as well. My brother just got accepted into Lehigh Valley’s campus but didn’t have the grades to get into their Business program, he had to go in as gen ed and apply again after a year.

I got into UP as an out of state student but it wasn’t a sure thing, even though I was guaranteed a full ride in state by UF for my high school performance. PSU definitely isn’t Northwestern, or an Ivy school, but it’s no joke to get into academically.

Accepting into UP...

But started at Delaware Valley College…the tranferred to UP when I realized what a colossal mistake I’d made. Best. Decision. Ever

Straight up admissions for UP is tough

They are kind of ridiculous about it actually. My fiance’s brother was accepted only to a branch campus, so he passed and instead got his biochem degree from Dickinson. So LOL, because I’m pretty sure his classes at Dickinson were AT LEAST as difficult as what he would have gone through at Penn State.

The point is, UP has a glut of applications, but is not setting the bar astronomically high to get a degree once you’re in. Guys running 4.3 40s who can catch passes do not need to worry about the “glut of applications” phenomenon.

Sad but true.....

In Atlanta there was HUGE scandal where many teachers at the direction of the Superintendent were changing student answers on tests to raise grades as well as standardized testing.

When test scores determine future testing

you can not be surprised by the actions of those running the show.

It depends on where you are in the south.

Inner-city schools generally are not very good and some county schools are not. Some, especially suburban schools, tend to be very good. But I think that’s probably universal.

In GA

only a handful of the public schools statewide are what I would classify as quality….urban or suburb. If you are not in one of those school districts….the only way to ensure your child gets a quality education is private school. I actually think we are below AL in the statewide rankings.

Well, I did go to Brookwood,

“A National School of Excellence” LOL!

So, exactly like Pennsylvania then?
100x's worse....you would be shocked

I attended both private(though middle school) and public school ( HS on) in PA. Yes there were a lot of kids who breezed through the public school system….but if you were in the advanced classes at my HS you received a very good education. I am absolutely horrified about the school situation in GA and how far behind the kids are here. The bad thing with Atlanta is that the private schools I speak of are all currently 22K per year. I shudder to think about how much they will cost when my 2 year old is ready to attend.

That's not entirely true

Several of the ‘top’ ones are 17K.

Not that that’s pocket change. But it’s still cheaper than lots of private schools in the NE.

Maybe Marist

which is Catholic (and priced way above Catholice schols in PA) but not Westminster, Pace or Lovett.

I know it's a broad generalization..

But per US Census numbers, the south is always at the bottom of education statistics. 2009 is the latests I could find official numbers on. Southern states rank as follows (rank in parentheses, out of 51 [incl. DC], along with PA for comparison):

HS graduate or higher – MS (50), KY (48), AL (47), LA (46), TN (42), GA (40)…PA (23)
BA degree or more – MS (49), KY (48), LA (47), AL (45), TN (42)…PA (27)
Advanced degree or more – LA (48), MS (47), AL (41)…PA (20)

I tried to work on a State Education vs. Football Player Production post, but it was just too much data.

Our new state tourism motto:

Louisiana:
Third World and Proud of It!

better than oklahoma

“The circus was here once.”

We're Texas' Hat
Hey, at least we're not Alabama
Hey, now!!

That’s just not right.

We're definitely looking up at Alabama.

Hell, when I cross the state line into Mississippi, I feel like I’m reentering the United States.

Think about that: Miss-a-fuckin’-sippi.

Hey, "Third World" is

a step up.

/RemembersFortPolk

While in NOLA last weekend...

We were at lunch, and a buddy said something that the waitress misinterpreted as him slighting her grammar usage. Her reply? “Well, that’s my Louisiana education for you.”

Junny,

there is some sort of inferiority complex in the collective consciousness down here that often reveals itself in a defensive reaction to the most innocuous comment.

That is shared by some of

the more rural areas here in North Carolina. It’s almost reflexive in how some respond to anything from me asking them to repeat what they just said (I have a hearing loss from the military, so sometimes don’t get stuff the first time) to reactions to a TV program.

Tweet from Armani Reeves

“Home Sweet Home”

Could be good or could be bad. Are they on their way back to Boston yet? We need our BSD crew to get on the phones!!

I took it to mean that he is at his home.
I just checked Reeves' twitter

the only noteworthy things I saw were several tweets @ porn star BiBi Jones (the Rob Gronkowski girl) begging for her to follow him….

thats probably a good sign, right?

hey, if BOB can get Gronk a porn star, why not you too?

Walk that line though

The dude Yuri Wright from Don Bosco got expelled from school for tweeting things like “I need some pussy” and Michigan and possibly ND have stopped recruiting him.

well ND is a prude

no sure why Michigan though, seeing as how Ann Arbor is a whore… Maybe he just saw some of those Michigan girls on tv and changed his mind.

I think it wasn't the tweets per se

But the fact that he got expelled and perhaps some other disciplinary issues.

Warner didn't play football until this year?

His senior year? And he’s, you know, a Warner? Wow.

wasn't it Omar Easy

that was kinda like that. Flashed major raw talent but didn’t really put it together? i’m a little foggy on that. I remember being at a game that he just blew it up, or seemed to. Many of those games were a little foggy for me…..

I think he was like Crawford at DE.

Ridiculous physical tools, but unable to put them to much use on a football field.

Crawford never became an All-American

But he was still a really good football player. He’s been invited to the combine. I think there are better examples of physical freaks who didn’t pan out as football players.

I disagree that he's a really good football player.

He got next to 0 pressure all year in a scheme that demands a lot of its front four. He may be a ‘really good football palyer’ by ‘average D1 football school’ standards, but he was not a really good football player by PSU/LJ standards. By that standard, he was Matt Rice and not much more.

Woah, Matt Rice was a hell of a player who was

overshadowed by Hali on the other side. I think Matt Rice is a great example of a really good football player by PSU/LJ standards.

I just don’t think that Crawford position has as many pass rush assignments as the other end (the rotating spot where Massaro was supposed to play). It’s not the sexy speed rusher that gets everyone excisted, but I think Crawford had a hell of a year.

Matt Rice was really good in run support, but that's about it.

IMO Josh Gaines was a lot better than either of these guys. PSU got lit up by Houston in large part because none of our ends could come close to beating OTs one on one. I mean, not even close. And it’s not like Keenum was a huge threat to run, so they were playing contain. Same thing happened vs. USC. Maybin had one move, USC gameplanned for it, and viola, Sanchez faced almost 0 pressure. People rip on Bradley and the secondary all the time, but IMO the last couple of years the DL has been at least as big a problem. Having one stud does no good if the other three guys can’t beat a single man with some consistency.

Yeah,

we’ve had this discussion I think, and I just don’t agree. Keenum was excellent moving around the pocket, and the defensive scheme was very effective but-for Willis getting abused in the worst display of DBing I’ve seen for an entire quarter, and Astorino fell on his face once. The pass rush really wasn’t the problem.

Complaining about Maybin is silly. He was an absolute monster. USC had a line full of NFL linemen, and Maybin was still playing end in college at 235. He was incredible that year.

I blocked the Bowl out of my mind mostly

But I can’t think of too many times where Keenum took more than a few seconds in the pocket to hit a wide open man. It wasn’t like he stood in the pocket until coverage broke down because the pass rush couldn’t get in on him, it was basically all in rhythm (other than the time he stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush and Astorino fell)

I thought the Dline did a good job

mostly pressure up the middle. There were several times I thought we had him dead to rights and he would either manage to get off a fantastic off-balance pass or just slip past the rush to make a throw. In fact, I remember one time he basically disappeared on screen because of all the lineman around him, only to have him squirt out and make a nice pass.

That's my recollection.

Just a slippery perfectly timed step up or laterally here or there and deliver a strike.

Lobster Boy was a physical freak who never made it as a football player.
But he was,

Alive, alive, alive and on the inside: Nothing waxed, nothing mummified.

Morelli was also invited to the combine, IIRC.

Physical freak college players often get invited to the combine, even if they weren’t very good players in college.

He played but he was buried behind upperclassmen.

Or at least that was what I read.

Oh ok.

I must have misunderstood something I read. I was kind of hoping he had never even played and was going to break out into some ridic superstar once he got a feel for the game.

Nah.

I think it was more of a “getting his shit together” thing. He supposedly spent all summer with a trainer getting his strength and speed up.

He played on the team, just not a lot in the game.

Which is one reason he’s flown under the radar. He was behind some guys that forced him into a reserve role until his senior year.

That's worrisome

You’d think if he had 1/4 of his dad’s talent, he could have cracked the starting lineup before then without much effort. Unless his team was loaded at every skill spot, that’s a concern that he’s either not very talented or motivated, or (hopefully) just a late bloomer.

I think you hit the 3 possibilities

But if they like what they saw on the tape, might as well offer him.

Unless it was like Ben Rothlesberger and the coach's son started ahead of him

and he didn’t get to start till his senior season.

That high school coach

Will – and should – never hear the end of that. I mean it’s one thing to play your son over a better player when that other player is D2 level or something…it’s another when the other kid ends up with 2 Lombardi Trophies within 10 years of graduating.

It's another possibility

Though I think it’s easier to start your son over a “Rothlisberger” than the son of Curt Warner.

Have you seen Roethlisberger play football?
Oops, posted before I said the next sentence

It’d be hard to believe that you could look at him on a practice field and, famous surname or not, determine that the team would be better off with him on the bench.

It's ridiculous that he sat

There’s just probably more pressure (from other coaches, parents, etc.) to start the son of a former NFL star than there is to start the big kid with no pedigree.

Pressure Tactics

If they’re just touching base with kids who are committed to see if they are at all interested, and then leave them alone if shot down, I’m OK with it. But if they’re hounding these kids after being told no initially, I’m not OK with it. I realize that’s how most programs recruit, but it was not how Penn State recruited and it’ll be a big nevative to me if I find out we’ve changed in that way.

I see what you're saying.

And that’s always been sort of an unwritten rule, in the B1G at least. But the rules/times are changing. Will PSU’s recruiting style change to adapt? I don’t know.

I wouldn't draw any conclusions on 2012 recruiting

We have both OSU and PSU getting all new coaching staffs 3/4 of the way through the recruiting period. All bets are off – most players are committed somewhere, and these new coaches need to do their job, so I can’t blame them for kicking tires on other schools’ commits. It’s less negative when you consider that these coaching staffs never “missed their opportunity” on recruiting their new targets, since they weren’t even recruiting when those targets committed to other schools.

But I do agree with you that I hope this type of thing doesn’t continue. If your coaching staff is in place from day one and a kid commits elsewhere, it’s because you didn’t recruit them well enough, and it’s cheap to make a run at them after they’ve committed elsewhere.

JP Holtz

Is he for sure gone? Leaning towards MSU?

Pitt's getting a look.

But he’s gone from Penn State.

Then he should really get a new pic on scout.com

It’s just rude to wear a PSU hat if you’re not coming here. Haha!

Isn't that kinda of like going into the Hall Of Fame

And wearing a hat for a team you never played for?

Or getting a tat of your alma mater and then coaching for another

#dbagbielema

Akeel Lynch's twitter

is a pic of him in an Iowa hoodie with a Packers hat on.

O'Brien should keep the recruiting net wide

and continue to look in England for defensive ends.

We should start pulling kickers and punters

From soccer academies in England or Australian Rules Football teams in Australia (see: Wing). No reason not to.

FYI - John Thomas

Out as strength and conditioning coach – guess there is still one more position to fill.

Breaking news: Cam Williams commits to tOSU.
And now it's time to break the internets.....
I'm not really upset or surprised,

but I’m sure some will be.

I'm not really upset....

it’s just a shame because of all the commits, he really seemed like he wanted to come here and recruited other guys to come with him. Seemed almost like a DWill type kid who could transform the next 3 or 4 years.

But I guess if that was really the case, he still could have come to PSU. No hard feelings toward the kid making a decision he thought best……just a tough loss I think for the team.

really wish he had waited until he got to talk to BOB

is this going to be a new thing now? Dread after every time one of our targeted recruits takes a trip to OSU?

I honestly didn't think I could dislike OSU any more than I did before...

but with Meyer there…it’s just to a different level now.

Brutal...

scandal or not this just proves how tough of a job BOB will have recruiting against Urban for the next however many years.

That's disappointing

I liked his enthusiasm for Penn State. Guess it was real or strong enough to counter the lure of Meyer.

Bummer

I hope Wartman is better though.

seriously

It’s one kid, who I will forever brand a LIAR and SYCOPHANT.

OSU has to be running out of schollies

even with them dumping the two DBs. Even Urbs has to know the B1G does not oversign (I would be pissed if the B1G starts turning a blind eye to that).

Further, this is an unusual recruiting year as we all know. Calm transition in PSU coaches and we might not be losing kids to other places. Hopefully this is a one-year phenomenon, esp. if BOB can field a really stellar team that wins the CCG while the Suckeyes are home watching that game on TV.

Meyer doesn't oversign.

He may be a lot of things shady, but he plays by the rules in terms of scholarships. If he offered them, there’s room somewhere.

This

I don’t think he ever over-signed while at FL.

I wonder if Cam is still going to meet with BOB next week

I know he just committed to OSU, but he obviously met with Urban when he was committed to PSU. You’d figure he’d at least have the courtesy to do that.

I will be pessimistic about that point.

Seems we always get shat upon in these scenarios. Wasn’t it Floyd and the 4 am visit? Irritating how people can crap on us, but bend over backwards to listen to other schools — even ones with post-season bans on them.

I. Williams. ND
Other than D. Williams

Guess Williams is becoming a bad name around here.

I wish he would have waited as well but people need to remember these are 17 and 18 year old kids. Many probably don’t think about the long haul and tend to be swayed by short term things. Even though he committed to OSU I still wish him luck, just not against us.

I am sure

The OSU coaches all pressured him …can’t wait any longer. Accept now, or move on. Maybe they did that in a nice sort of way. But you don’t go out there two weeks in a row and not pull the trigger and think they will hold on much longer..

so who hates urban meyer

Cause this guy does

Man, Urbz is smoking us

But this class was going to get detonated anyway. You don’t have your school’s image thrown in a poop-filled dumpster and lit on fire and broadcast live on every news outlet and get out of it unscathed. Sure Meyer has the bowl ban, but at the he can sell that the end of OSU’s punishment is known, while ours still looms. Plus, he can point to how good USC is right now and be like “see, we’ll be fine.”

We’ll round out with some 3 stars and work on next year. It’s good to hear that the coaches are talking aggressively to people committed elsewhere, because at a minimum it gets them time in the High Schools and with the coaches at those schools to plant the seed for next year.

2012 class gets a mulligan. Win 9 games with a flashy, if inconsistent, revamped offense at the hands of BO’B, and we’re back in biznass.

Of course.....

Go 7-5 or 6-6 as the offensive players adjust to a new system, deal with the Sandusky trial being front or second page news all season, and maybe sprinkle in one or two more administration officials getting fired due to new info coming out…then yea, LET TEH PANIKS BEGINZ!

Cats can't argue with free tat's, man
Last night's snowstorm

Is it gonna screw up some prospects travel plans or do the guys come in on Friday?

I think most come up on Friday.
At least one recruit was delayed.

Was forced to spend last night in Detroit, a punishment I wish on no man.

(I kid. The wife’s family is from The D.)

Junny, without destroying the contest,

can you provide any updates on what is happening with the recruits this weekend?

Is it a good sign that Armani has not made an announcement? I know many of us thought Cam and Armani were a package deal, altho, as noted elsewhere, I seem to recall Armani saying this week that wasn’t necessarily so.

BTW, could you or someone else in the know outline what happens on recruit weekends? (Just the legal stuff — LOL.) The only time I was a recruit was at Fort Dix in 1976, and I think the Army processes its people differently than does Penn State. It would be interesting to know how they are met, what meetings they attend, how they are matched up to a current student-athlete, etc., etc. Thanks!

Still no word out of Penn State, other than some tweets from Da'Quan Davis..

…who appears to be having (ahem) a real good time. The Warners were delayed in Detroit due to weather, but the rest made it safely.

Armani not announcing a new school is good for PSU, but I still wouldn’t get my hopes up. If he still visits next weekend, that’s a good sign. His godfather and pseudo-father figure is none other than Brent Williams, Cam’s dad, so it’ll be difficult to get Armani here without some awkward moments.

On the visits, it’s pretty much what you’d expect from a school trying to court you. The recruits are “hosted” by a current player (have to imagine Adrian Amos is hosting one if not both of the Calvert Hall kids), who shows them around campus, generally hangs out with the recruits, etc. The recruits are given tours of the facilities and meet with the coaches. They’ll meet with the HC (where available, obviously not this weekend) and their position coaches, who give them a general idea of the direction of the team/position/staff.

When do they party with the cheerleaders?

Oh wait, thats tOSU, USC, LSU, Florida, Bama, UCLA, Oregon, Miami, etc. etc. etc.

The Golden Girls would be the better choice at LSU.
Her hands make her look about 80 years old.
Thanks for the update.

Hopefully no news is good news, with all these kids.

DCox is not here, correct? Anything coming from him in the last day or so?

It's 11:32 CST.

Where are my motherfuckin’ sirens?
