Illinois at Penn State Recap

Patrick Chambers notched his first victory over a ranked team last night. I don't think any would've thought that would be possible this season just a few months ago. Although, the way Penn State has played Illinois the last 6 years, maybe it's not so surprising. This game just added to what has become a very entertaining series as of late. Looking back at the last 13 meetings, there have been so many memorable moments both good and bad. This game had plenty of them as well, but none were bigger than the final two possessions.

Tim Frazier had been quiet in the 2nd half until Penn State's final possession. With the game tied and shot clock running down, Tim came off a great ball screen from Jonathan Graham and quickly stop and popped the floater. The 10-footer hit nothing by nylon. A back-tracking Nnanna Egwu (in for a fouled-out Meyers Leonard) didn't stand a chance to contest the shot. However, eight seconds remained in the game. One more defensive stop was needed. It was delivered by Jermaine Marshall, who's emphatic block of Sam Maniscalco's feeble attempt to tie the game sealed the deal.

This was a win Penn State really needed to have. No, they likely aren't going to any post-season tournament, but the mood around these parts could've really soured when you look at PSU's future schedule (4 out of the next 5 are on the road). They were looking at a 9-game losing streak if they didn't get it done last night. But thanks to some tremendous defense and timely buckets, Penn State was able to spring their 5th straight upset of a ranked Illinois team.

Star-divide

Team Poss Score PPP eFG% OReb% TO% FT Rate
ILL 57 52 0.91 41.8% 37.5% 24.6% 26.5%
PSU 57 54 0.95 44.9% 35.5% 21.1% 26.5%

It started out ugly as Illinois jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the first half. But Penn State stayed disciplined on defense and effectively switched to different looks that kept the Illini out of rhythm the rest of the game. The Lions did a nice job denying the ball to Leonard as much as possible. The big man finished with 15 on just 6-12 shooting with 3 turnovers. Brandon Paul hit some big shots down the stretch (20 points), but guys like DJ Richardson and Joe Bertrand were off their games. Richardson, a 40% 3-pt shooter, was just 2-7 from downtown, while Bertrand cooled off quite a bit from his hot stretch for just 4 points on 2-6 shooting.

Offensively, Penn State scrapped their way to 54 points, which is all that was needed for the victory. With Billy Oliver out of the game with the flu bug, the Lions attempted just 10 three-pointers (less than half of their season average of 21). The balanced attack was led by Cam Woodyard with 17 points on 6-10 shooting. He scored PSU's last 7 points before Tim Frazier's heroics on the game-winning 10-foot floater. Frazier didn't force it as much as he has been (12 points on 11 shots), and he was great setting up teammates with 9 assists. Also coming up big was Matt Glover, who realized how effective the offense can be if he actually participates in it, and Sasa Borovnjak. Glover set the tone at the start of the second half, giving PSU a nice 9 point lead that they never fully relinquished (although Illinois tied it with less than a minute to play). Borovnjak had a couple of fearless buckets against the future lottery-pick Leonard.

Next up for Penn State is back-to-back roadtrips to Indiana and Ohio State over the next week, but at least these guys stopped the recent bleeding and can feel good about themselves again. I feel good just watching them. Hopefully many of the students who took advantage of the free admission offer and dollar dog night come back to support this team. They deserve it.

Solid game

even the OReb% comparison is pretty darned respectable when you have to go against Leonard.

I watched the 1st half.

First time I have watched them this year. I was impressed by their hustle and scrappiness. I even liked the uniforms (but don’t mess with the football unis).

I think Chambers’ players buy into his system. He seems to be a great hire, but no matter how good the coach they have to have the horses. If Chambers can get some better talent to come to PSU things could get really interesting.

Congrats Gentlement! Nice win.
LOVE THE GRAYS.

Also, we’re going to be Having Real Good Times if the energy of this team stays constant as the talent improves. Happy for the guys, they earned it.

You really had to reference the Black Eyed Peas there, didn't you?
wouldn't mind seeing another variation

like Maryland has with a colored pattern around the border linings of the neck and shoulders

Newbill, Taylor, Thorpe.

I agree, and the talent is improving already.

Is this the first game Penn State was out-rebounded offensively?
No.

We were technically out-rebounded offensively in the IU game, but that was because both teams were effecive on the defensive glass.

That’s the only game this year, though.

How many

more times do we have to beat them before it stops being an upset? Its what we do.

Vegas is taking note.

Illinois was only a 3 point favorite last night.

Study? Xbox? Penn State BBall?

Hands down 2 hours at the BJC wins. Great time, lots of enthusiasm, lots of entertainment, lots of good basketball. Students and townies are missing a great night out. Guys this is a cheap fun date. The hot dogs suck!

Penn State basketball : Illinois basketball :: Northwestern football : Iowa football
SHUT YOUR DIRTY WHORE MOUTH

EFF jNW. ON IOWA

But yes, over the past 6 years, this is highly accurate
Great game and win.

Ben tweeted that Coach Weber’s post-game presser involved a bit of screaming. He’s probably not a fan of coming into BJC at this point.

BTW, how does a 7'1" kid only grab 4 rebounds

while playing almost the entire game?

Beat a ranked team and didn't rush the court?

I guess beating Illinois just isn’t that big of a deal.

They seem to have taken that Orange Crush stunt personally
Eric...

As I said at Penn State Hoops…something special brewing. We’re a couple years away from being stocked w/ PC’s guys, but you can see the improvement each game.

And how cool is it to have an offense where players actually move in the half court set?

So true.

How nice is it to actually win a game on a defensive stop? How nice is it to actually have a bench? Even with two guys out we still have a deeper team than last year. How nice is it to not have anything to complain about with the coaching staff?

My only serious gripe against ED ever

is that i LOATHE the flex. If PSU had 5 Geary Claxtons or Jeff Brookses, it would be an ideal offense. Outside of that, it lacks movement and you end up with moments of Milos Bogetic getting the ball at the point, going away from the basket, while Talor Battle is trying to post up a 6’6" guy. If you think that’s good, you don’t know basketball.

You really had no beef with the 'defense' this team has played over the last 10 years?
It wasn't good. We all realize this.

but you could certainly make the case that with the personnel PSU had, it was optimal. Not saying it necessarily was, just that you could make the case.

Not really an ED gripe, but sorta somehow that I can’t really quantify, was opponents’ ability to make ill-advised 3s against ED coached teams. It didn’t make sense.

BTW

Did anyone see Chambers grill Marshall when he came off the court during a time out. That was awesome. Then Marshall had the game-sealing block a few seconds later. ATTITUDE.

Marshall could not have enjoyed that death glare from Chambers.

To be honest, I wasn’t certain what Marshall did to be on the receiving end of that.

He gave up two consecutive offensive rebounds which led to an Illini bucket.
Ah, thanks. I remember that sequence.
Someone needs to post

a screenshot of that. I want to set it as my background

Reply fail

Meant for the above post^

BJC

This may be a minority opinion, but…I really wish they played some games in Rec Hall. Even for a big game like last night, they don’t come close to filling the BJC. The students are psyched about the Chambers era but there just aren’t enough human beings living within a reasonable drive of State College to fill the BJC on a Thursday.

If OSU or Indiana comes to town and the conference title is on the line

it will get filled.

But I agree with in wishing they played at Rec some. It’s a little depressing looking at that highlight and seeing those seats.

It will get filled

By the IU Alumni Clubs of NYC and DC. Just sayin’. :)

truth

but that’s part of a marquee opponent (usually)…they travel well. Combine that with decent to good in house product by PSU and you’ve got something.

The BJC certainly isn’t close to the ideal college basketball arena, I agree. But let’s be real…seats are empty because the team is bad.

I know what you mean

I was mainly just being an arse. But I do hope that one day Penn State can be like most of the schools in the B1G and fill BJC with your own fans. You don’t want to be like Northwestern and sell out every game because the alumni of other schools fill the upper level.

To say you can't fill the BJC is disingenuous.

The BJC had attendance numbers in the quintuple digits 6 times in the 08-09 season alone, including a Wednesday night and a Thursday. A few of these hit or closely approached 15,000.

Last year’s NCAA team had a couple games that hit 5 figures as well, including the record 15,403 for the game against #1 OSU. Hell, one game that year had 9,000 attending when all of the students were on winter break.

The past few years have shown time and time again that if there’s something worth watching, people will come to watch it. The BJC can be electric. The team just has to prove to fans that they’re worth coming to SC for.

for last night at least

I think weather was a decent factor in low attendance

Weather no excuse

There are 30K students in and on campus. Admission was free if you wore a gray tee. Who doesn’t have a gray tee? It was $ dog nite. The BJC is a terrible place to watch the game if you are not on the sides or on the floor under the baskets, but that is no excuse for not supporting the team. Support now will result in quality recruits going forward.

and that's the main argument.
