As Penn State football fans there are a select few teams that bring Nittany Nation together in unity rooting for a big win. Sure we want to win every game but there are certain teams you really, really hate to lose to and really love to beat. The Ohio States and Notre Dames of the world just bring on a whole new level of fandom and a whole new level of satisfaction when ‘we’ beat them. I’ve been watching Penn State football since the 80’s and my most memorable game was Ohio State in 2005. It was just special in so many ways and I’ll never forget it.
As Penn State Wrestling fans though, there’s one team and one team only that bring out the best in us, and that team is Iowa. For decades, they were the king of wrestling, they can’t build a trophy case large enough to hold all their national championships and I can’t even count the number of Big Ten championships they’ve had. Beating them is beating the best in the sport, heck you even love to hate their coach with his mat-side antics and referee intimidation that borders on insanity. Yes, Iowa ranked #2 coming into a packed Rec Hall is about as good as it gets for a dual meet and we'll be treated to just that 2PM on Sunday.

| Wt. | PSU | vs | Iowa |
|---|---|---|---|
| 125 | # 8 Nico Megaludis | #2 Matt McDonough | |
| 133 | Frank Martellotti | #2 Tony Ramos | |
| 141 | Bryan Pearsall | #3 Montell Marion | |
| 149 | #1 Frank Molinaro | Mike Kelly | |
| 157 | #8 Dylan Alton | Nick Moore | |
| 165 | #1 David Taylor | #6 Mike Evans | |
| 174 | #2 Ed Ruth | #9 Ethan Lofthouse | |
| 184 | #2 Quentin Wright | Jeremy Fahler | |
| 197 | #12 Morgan McIntosh | Grant Gambrall | |
| 285 | #6 Cameron Wade | #12 Bobby Telford |
Penn State wrestled their worst dual of the season losing to Iowa 22-13. Iowa has dominated the series with a 25-6-2 record against the good guys. Penn State has lost 4 in a row against Iowa with their last victory in Rec Hall in 2007.
Iowa will wrestle #7 Ohio State tonight so we’ll get a better feel for the lineup. I usually don’t break down the matches in a weight by weight manner because it can get too long but this dual deserves some extra attention so here goes:
125: On paper this looks like a heavy Iowa lean. McDonough is coming off a major decision of Northwestern’s Levi Mele, who Megaludis beat by regular decision. McDonough is a pinner and has considerable more experience than Megaludis. If Nico is too amped up he could find himself on his back. There’s a huge difference between being aggressive and being too aggressive, hopefully Nico comes out the former. But Nico has gotten better and better as the season moves on and he’s a wrestler that is very similar to McDonough, both have similar body types, both are aggressive and both are extremely well conditioned. McDonough is good at wearing wrestlers down and beating them in the 3rd, that won’t happen to Nico. If Nico stays off his back this could be a good one.
McDonough by decision: Team Score: PSU 0 – Iowa 3
133: If this was later in the year and Martellotti had some more bouts under his belt I would bet this would be close. But Ramos is just too good and Frank hasn’t wrestled anyone yet and hasn’t looked that great against lousy competition.
Ramos by Major: Team Score: PSU 0 – Iowa 7
141: Pearsall is wrestling better and better and is a tough out, but Marion is one of the nation’s best at 141. If Pearsall can do some damage on top, he’ll be able to keep it close but Marion is just too much for Pearsall right now.
Marion by Major: Team Score: PSU 0 – Iowa 11
149: Here’s where Penn State needs bonus and unfortunately Frank isn’t a big point scorer. He can score big but he’s more of a grinder who gets his opponents down and wears them down on the mat. Kelly is by no means a fish, he’s got a 12-5 record, but Frank needs at least a major. As is the case for Iowa when they are outmatched, look for Kelly to try and slow Molinaro down and keep it close.
Frank by decision: Team Score: PSU 3 – Iowa 11
157: Both the Iowa and Penn State websites have Nick Moore ‘officially’ listed as the starter at 157 but all the rumors point to All-American Derek St. John returning this weekend. For our purposes, we’ll assume St. John returns. Alton is improving and finds himself ranked 8th as he slowly moves up the rankings. St. John will be rusty but he’s a great wrestler and is ranked #2. He lost to David Taylor every time he wrestled him last year but kept closing the gap. Alton will have his hands full.
St. John by decision: Team Score: PSU 3 – Iowa 14
165: Normally I would be extremely confident that Magic Man David Taylor could get bonus points no matter who he wrestles but redshirt freshman Mike Evans is pretty impressive. He’s 18-2 on the season with 11 of those wins by major or better with 5 pins although he was majored once. This is their first meeting of course, and if the young Evans comes out firing I think he can keep it close with Taylor. Look for Taylor to pull away in the 3rd with a possible major decision late.
Taylor by Major: Team Score: PSU 7 – Iowa 14
174: Lofthouse is 14-4 on the season losing all 4 by regular decision including an overtime loss. He’s moved up to #9 in the country after beating former 9th-ranked Lee Munster of Northwestern. Having said all that, Ruth is rolling right now. He was just named Big Ten Wrestler of the week, is 19-0 with 15 of those wins by the bonus point variety with 6 pins and 6 tech falls. If I were a betting man, I’d put good money on bonus points.
Ruth by Major: Team Score: PSU11 – Iowa 14
184: The tail end of death row, Penn State’s three big weights of 165, 174 and 184, has the Lions best chance of 6 points. After a disappointing start to the season, Quentin has moved back to 2nd place. Q has 16 wins with only two of those by regular decision and he’s tied for the team lead in pins with 9. In the last three duals, Iowa has sent out three different wrestlers at 184. Translation: this is Iowa’s weakest weight. Quentin needs a big throw and pin here.
Wright by fall: Team Score: PSU17 – Iowa 14
197: Grant Gambrall was once ranked this season, but is sitting at 7-4 out of the rankings. Morgan hasn’t been wrestling great as of late and seems to be quite timid. McIntosh has all the tools to be a top-ten wrestler but doesn’t have the confidence yet. This match worries me but I think Morgan’s athleticisim wins out in the end.
McIntosh by close decision: Team Score: PSU20 – Iowa 14
285: Another match that looks like a heavy Penn State lean but I’m not convinced. Telford is coming off a 3 match losing streak and Wade is the higher ranked wrestler but we just don’t know which Cam will show up. I hope the match doesn’t come down to heavyweight because this matchup scares me. Last season Wade barely beat Blake Rasing by a score of 1-0 in the Iowa dual. Cam seems to pucker up in big duals.
Telford by close decision: Team Score: PSU20 – Iowa 17
Final team score Penn State 20-Iowa 17.
This match could go either way with the key being bonus points. If either side gives up a pin, and it’s a possibility for both sides, it will spell doom. The first 3 weights are locks for Iowa as is Death Row and Molinaro for Penn State. The rest are borderline tossups and could go either way. One thing’s for sure, Iowa thrives on big dual meets, hopefully Penn State is ready.
Ed. Note: I just checked and this dual will be broadcast on the BTN on tape delay at 9PM Sunday.

Where is it? I'm itchin to read
Does the High Porch Picnic cover wrestling?
jtothep - January 20, 2012
Nah, I do recaps sometimes
And I’ll be doing one following Sunday but we’re more football/basketball. Besides, no one can top the work Ross does. Hopefully he publishes something this weekend.
mikjones24 - January 20, 2012
With brutus up for y'all tonight, I'd imagine we'll see something here today soon
jtothep - January 20, 2012
I just checked
It appears Ross is too busy

THERE it is!

Peter Gray - January 20, 2012
Looks like pretty fair predictions
It’s weird how lopsided the matchups are, even at weights with two top-tenners. There could be bonus up and down the weight classes. I’m a little scared for Martellotti, even tho Ramos isn’t much of a pinner historically, cuz he looked so rusty vs. NW.
But I’m with you. Other than Heavy, which we all suck at predicting, looks like probably chalk throughout.
jtothep - January 20, 2012
Not to be a downer
But it looked like chalk last year too and look what happened. There was no way Long was gonna lose to Ramos who was struggling, etc.
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
What's y'all's most anticipated match?
While I’m very interested to watch Nico go against McD, he got thrown around twice by Perrelli and I don’t have high hopes for him here. I imagine Tank’s gonna put out another ‘workmanlike’ effort, but while he seems better able to make some NF turns from top this year, I won’t be surprised with a (frustrating!) 7pt win.
So I’m down to the Unicorn & Ed Ruth. Mike Evans seems easy enough to dislike (like any shit-in-your-lacrosse-helmet kinda guy would) and Lofthouse is pretty vanilla, but I dug Ruth’s aggressiveness against Munster so much that I’m gonna go with him. He looks a LOT more polished than he did as a RSFR last year and his style is so cool to watch. If he comes out with a mind toward dominating, it is gonna be reaaaall fun.
jtothep - January 20, 2012
I wanna see Unicorn destroy Evans for personal reasons not related to shitting in a lacross glove (not helmut)
I also really want to see if Frank Molinaro has taken the step for the team needed and starts going for more point. Lately it seem he has, this will be a good one to judge. A lot of this match comes down to how it is going to be reffed. If the stalls are called, guys like Frank and Ed are going to get their bonus points, and maybe more than expected. If not, its a really tight match. There shouldn’t be much stalling in either style for Evans and Taylor, gonna be fun to see.
Is this getting replayed anywhere? Complete crap that it is not live on BTN, this would get better ratings than most of their BB coverage. This would be watched by fans all over if it was available.
BMAN13 - January 20, 2012
Stalling...
I agree with everything you say with regards to stalling but I shy away from putting that in my preview. It makes it sound like I’m building a pre-excuse for losing. Historically, the Big Ten refs are hesitant to call stalling against Iowa, we all know that and just have to accept it.
Re: replayed. Just looked the match will be replayed at 9PM on taped delay the same day. I’ll add that to my post.
Galen - January 20, 2012
Yea in their defense Iowa is typically very good at hiding stalling. Too many refs just look at who is moving backwards and calls them for stalling, when really a guy with his head buried in his opponents chest pushing them backwards is preventing offense more than anything.
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
I hate when I get my pooh repositories mixed up
jtothep - January 20, 2012
I live much closer and knew many kids that wrestled with him in the club up at Cumberland Valley
BMAN13 - January 20, 2012
My favorites
I’m looking forward to see how Morgan handles the crowd and a decent wrestler in Gambrall. Remember Gambrall beat Q last year at 184. Of course Alton and St. John would be very interesting if he goes.
Galen - January 20, 2012
Good ones
I’m also curious about those young guys.
What do you think for livethreading? See how many people can stay dark til the 9p broadcast? I’m busy at 2p, so wouldn’t be able to check updates til later anyway. I think I’m gonna try it: turn off the twitter, stay away from from the web, put the tots to bed, then settle in.
Are you gonna listen to Byers at 2p? Wait. Are you going?
jtothep - January 20, 2012
I don't know
NFL is on at 6:30, so wife won’t let me change channels till its over, unless the game is boring and she heads to bed early, then I’ll watch it. I’ll set it up to record anyhow. I’ll cheat and probably follow it somehow. Still waiting to hear about whether I have OSU tickets on the 29th if you are interested. I’ll be taking the youngest grandson and have another adult ticket if the guy here at work shares again. Hoping for the PItt match too.
BMAN13 - January 20, 2012
Thanks again
Yeah, I can’t, Bman. I probably won’t go to as many football games this year, tho, so will work harder to get a wrestling match on the calendar next year.
Road trip to Carver?
jtothep - January 20, 2012
OMG, Carver would be the grumpy.
I could pull that off next year. Wife will be disappointed I would make an away wrestling match before she got to go to an away football game, but I would still be in.
BMAN13 - January 20, 2012
nice work on grumpy. haven’t heard that one round here for awhile.
jtothep - January 20, 2012
I'm going and thinking about live blogging
Not sure if I should start a thread or not
Galen - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, it's tough when the video isn't live, but is being broadcast later that day
If you liveblog it, many on here who weren’t otherwise gonna watch it that night, will get cool updates—and current ones.
If we did a thread later, during the broadcast, anybody could drop in and play spoiler. But, participants could still chat with each other while watching the video. Which might still be a benefit even if we knew the results.
I dunno man. But I do know I’m jealous you’ll be there. Have fun!
jtothep - January 20, 2012
I think Alton vs DSJ if he wrestles. I want to see how Dylan handles a longer lanky guy.
Really that’s about it on paper none of the other matches should be too intriguing. I mean Lofthouse vs Ruth is ranking wise pretty close but we’ve seen that match already.
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
That's a good one
He looks closer and closer each time. Dake was a little taller than him and looked like he has longer arms and legs. And Welch has bout 4-5 inches on him, I think. His shots against each of them looked good at the outset, just not quiiiitte able to finish them and bring in that leg (or drop the rest of the body after the leg’s got, in the case of the Dake match). That’s a confidence thing, tho. His defenses look good enough (to beat the top guys), but he has got to score. Will be good to see him against St. John.
jtothep - January 20, 2012
Nico and MM
Has Nico learned from those Perrelli matches? Time for McIntosh to start to live up to the hype.
Frank O'Brien - January 20, 2012
Also good choices
One of my new favorite things about Nico is something I used to not be able to stand from wrestlers: the imaginary lats. Dude walks around with his arms all stuck out, and I like it on him. In answer to your question, tho, I’m not sure yet. Mele was regarded about as highly as Perrelli, but is nowhere near him stylistically. Still, Nico looked much less vulnerable with spacing & angles. Also, I can’t yet understand how or why that ankle pick was so available—Mele is only 5’2". If that’s a barely unveiled weapon, it’d be cool—sure was a staple of Sanderson’s repertoire in his wrestling days. In any event, against Mele, it looked obscenely easy. Can’t imagine it will as readily available against McD.
Sounds like most of Sanderson’s work with McIntosh (btw, Clay Steadman said on the NW broadcast last week: ‘we call him Smackintosh.’ LOVE it!) is between the ears. He was thiiiiiisss close against both Yohn & Powless, two top-5 guys, and I dug how he ended up with the W against that 5th yr SR co-captain from NW. I never read what exactly happened in that Scuffle consi match against Minny’s backup Schiller, but still, the shit this dude is pulling as a true frosh, wrestling what looks to be up a weight? Unbelievable. In that latter dept (wrestling up a weight), he & Gambrall are obviously compatible and GG is struggling, so you’re right: this will be interesting.
jtothep - January 20, 2012
My picks
125: McD by maj. dec I think experience makes the difference here
133: Ramos by maj dec Ramos isn’t much of a pinner but martelotti has been on his back in the last two matches, that concerns me.
141: Marion by maj dec Of the first three this is the one I’m most worried about giving up a fall.
149: Molinaro by maj dec I agree with everything in the write up but Frank is going to pull something out as senior to lead the team.
157: DSJ by dec I think it could be close, but I think not only is DSJ the better wrestler right now I think his length presents a style match up for Dylan.
165: Taylor by fall Evans is good but I think he’s a little too aggressive and a little too sloppy and Taylor catches him and pins him. If he doesn’t get the fall I see a double digit major decision for Taylor.
174: Ruth by maj dec Lofthouse is good but Ruth is wrestling some of his best matches since the southern scuffle last year.
184: Wright by fall Worst weight for Iowa falls at a bad spot for them as Wright is a pinner, he gets a throw and finishes the match.
197: McIntosh by dec This match scares me Gramball has struggled this year, but Morgan hasn’t looked overly sharp the past few weeks.
Hwt: Telford by dec Neither guy has been wrestling well lately, this pick is mostly out of frustration with Wade. Have to say while he’s been a top ten guy most of his time at Penn State I won’t be sad to see him go.
Final Score Penn State 23 Iowa 18
Honestly won’t be surprised if Iowa finds a way to win this dual. It’s what they do.
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
Give Cam some love
It seems Telford can’t score and can’t get out from the bottom against stronger opponents. Cam wins 2-0 scoring on an escape and riding time.
Frank O'Brien - January 20, 2012
Telford has looked like garbage lately
So it’s a “who the hell knows” with him.
mikjones24 - January 20, 2012
Yea I find those last two weights really interesting. Both teams have guys that they though pretty highly of a few months ago now they have little to no confidence in a win on Sunday. Which is especially interesting since the dual could very well come down to those two.
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
It wouldn't surprise me
Telford is known to win when he’s supposed to lose and to lose when he’s supposed to win. So basically, I’m hoping he isn’t supposed to win. He’s a regular Seabiscuit.
mikjones24 - January 20, 2012
Unless cam gets too high on top and gets reversed which is about a 50/50 proposition with him.
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
Hooo-Ahh!
Whoa, so apparently Nico & McD have squared off once before, back in the day at the Young Guns Wrestling Club, run by former 4x Iowa All-American Jody Strittmatter:
Sure sounds like Nico is up for the match: "I know a lot of people are counting me out, but I feel 100 percent that I can win." It also sounds like we can put to bed all the speculating about which weight will kick off the meet. Said Sanderson: ""I trust Nico to go out there and get the job done, and I can’t think of any other way to start the match."
jtothep - January 20, 2012
Awesome!
And I’m sure Brands will want the match to start at 125, it only makes sense for him.
Galen - January 20, 2012
Very nice jtot, thanks for the linkage
I’m curious as to when that match occurred.
Frank O'Brien - January 20, 2012
Just from context
I’m guessing HS-age for McD. Say he was a HS SR. That would put Nico as a HS FR, when he lost to Mark Rappo in the state semis (his only HS official blemish). Call him age 14? I guess it coulda been McD’s redshirt year at Iowa or earlier than his HS SR year, but yeah: long time ago.
jtothep - January 21, 2012
Updates from Columbus
St. John is in the line up as expected. Also Raising is getting the nod at heavyweight instead of Telford.
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
Kelly loses, tOSU up 9-3
Frank O'Brien - January 20, 2012
Now 12 3
Doesn’t sound like St. John is any where near 100%
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
Maybe he’ll be able to close the gap on Demas in the B1Gs and Nat’ls
Frank O'Brien - January 20, 2012
And now Evans loses to Garcia
I did not see this coming Iowa is getting it taken to them right now by OSU. 15 3.
Of course this means Sunday Penn State is going to be walking into an angry hornet’s nest.
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
Ohio State takes it 21 9
Wow!
psuwresfan - January 20, 2012
looked like Iowa was looking ahead.
BMAN13 - January 21, 2012
Cosigned wow
Just a reminder that Minnesota got clocked on the road against Cornell on a Friday, then still came in to Rec Hall on a Sunday and clocked us back. But some very interesting results out in Columbus last night:
Results:
125 – No. 2 Matt McDonough (Iowa) DEC No. 15 Johnni Dijulius (OSU), 5-2
133 – No. 4 Logan Stieber (OSU) DEC No. 2 Tony Ramos (Iowa), 7-0
141 – No. 7 Hunter Stieber (OSU) DEC No. 3 Montell Marion (Iowa), 4-2
149 – No. 16 Cam Tessari (OSU) DEC Mike Kelly (Iowa), 9-4
157 – Josh Demas (OSU) DEC Derek St. John (Iowa), 7-3

Also
I hate, hate, hate that those Stiebers are at our weakest weights.
But that could be good for us against the Minnesotas, Iowas & Oklahoma States come Nationals time.
jtothep - January 21, 2012
Another interesting result from 141 last night
Iowa State’s Luke Goettl upset previously undefeated and #1 Kendric Maple 11-9 in OT. Maple had majored him twice earlier this season.

New Linkage!
The Penn Stater has a nice article up and in it Sanderson talks about rethinking his Iowa strategies:
