Joe Paterno Gravely Ill According To Multiple Sources

Photo

Mario Tama - Getty Images

Joe Paterno is gravely ill and family members have been summoned to the hospital to say their final goodbyes, according to multiple reports including Blue White Illustrated's Tom McAndrew, Wilkes-Barre's Citizens-Voice, and others across the state. Earlier tonight, Onward State reported that Paterno was taken off a respirator (this is also being denied as of 9:45 Saturday night).

Michael Sisak of the Citizens-Voice had this information:

Paterno's wife, Sue, summoned close friends and longtime staff members this afternoon to the State College hospital where Paterno has been undergoing treatments since last weekend.

Paterno wanted to see them and say a final goodbye, Sue told one of the staff members, the source said.

Also, the Associated Press reports that Paterno's doctors have "characterized his status as serious" and quotes Paterno public relations point man Dan McGinn: "Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications."

Obviously, this is beyond a delicate subject, especially here. More updates as they become available.

It's remarkable how correct Joe was

That he feared for his health if he ever stepped down from the job.

Can't say we didn't see this coming. Bear Bryant died shortly after retiring as well. It's like football was the only thing that kept them hanging on.

God Bless you, Joe Pa.

I think we should be realistic.

This is a sad sad day. But I don’t think not coaching killed Joe. I mean, I don’t think he developed lung cancer in one week. It just manifested itself and hit all at once.

As for Bear Bryant, Bryant coached before the internet era, before ESPFuckingN was what it is now, etc. Bryant’s coaching career probably ended right about the time where there was still a little respect for an icons private life. I remember reading that Bryant may have actually been sick before he retired, and that it wasn’t retirement that killed him.

In any event, this is truly a sad day for Nittany Nation. I was talking to my cousin and he said if Joe is interred in Brooklyn and they drive the body there as opposed to flying, the highways should be lined for the procession. He said he’d call off work. I will too if I have to.

those of us

south of there will have to hike up

Yes, Coach Bryant was sick before he retired. But that's not why he retired. I just believe that coaches like the Bear and Joe Pa live for what they do.

Joe Pa was the last of the greats to stick with his university instead of skipping around from paycheck to paycheck.

You're dead on right about that!!!

This was never about money for Joe. That’s what made him the man he is, and not some opportunistic whore.

He stayed long enough to put down roots and make a difference, just like his father wanted him to do. Joe’s dad can definitely rest in peace knowing his son made a difference.

Totally agree, and thanks for saying it.
God bless you and yours, Coach.
God Bless you JoePa

You are and always will be Penn State. Thank you for all you have done for our “cow college”

Said this in the FanPost, but wanted to say it here...

… Bulldog Nation is praying for Joe, his family, and for the entire Penn State family.

Thanks, Dawg.

I know we all appreciate the thoughts and support.

Thank you, good sir.
It's good to see fellow SEC folks

posting these good thoughts

aurabass

thanks for helping to educate the people out there that want to drink PSU and JoePa’s blood. Has helped a lot of us get through these last few difficult months.

I will always have some orange in me now for your kindness.

Thanks

God Bless you JoePa...you are and always will be a great Man!
Best wishes to you, Joe.

Terribly sad news.

Thank you Joepa

The last few months do not define you. You were the best coach ever – of football and more importantly, life. Thank you for everything.

To all the trustees and arm chair moralists in the media: Screw you!!

We all hope Joe will be around a long time

We also know how fragile life is. I just pray that when God takes him, it is in peace and surrounded by those he loves.

God bless you Joe

I am crying now..

God bless Joe
Coach Paterno

You and your family are in my prayers.

God Bless Joe and his family

My thoughts and prayers go out to Joe and Sue, the last few months must have been just as hard if not worse for her :(

Hang tough Coach!

The Nittany Nation loves you!

It's amazing how quickly things can change

A few short months ago I could have never, in my worst nightmares, have thought that all this could happen so quickly.

God Bless you and your family Coach.

We all love you and know what you are all about, thank you for teaching us how to be better men, women, and people.

Thank you, Joe, for all you have done for Penn State.

And the student athl;etes you have molded into men.

Thanks for all the great memories. God bless you.
All is not lost

Serious is the second worst condition, so this is REALLY BAD NEWS, but not necessarily the worst news.

Stopping chemo treatments due to complications is not unusual either.

I’m not giving up hope.

A positive spin. We need that.
Go with God, Joe.

But I can’t say I’m surprised, the cancer he has sounds exactly like what my dad had. In the year he died, we have a picture of him visiting Washington D.C. in August, he was diagnosed with “pnuemonia” (sp?) in early September, diagnosed with lung cancer in late September, and died in mid-November.

Joe did great things on Earth and will do even greater things in Heaven
My prayers are with Joe and the whole Pateno family

I just hope that when the end comes, it is peaceful and that he is surrounded by those he loves.

I'm not giving up hope

The WB paper has led us astray before.

But it sounds very bad and I’m preparing for the worst.

Thank You Joe!!!

God Bless You Joe

The biggest hero and influence on my life outside of my family….the past two months WILL NOT DEFINE HOW I REMEMBER

God Bless.

This too will be done with dignity.

So, uhhh, yea...

Just got here from the ESPN post, there is some serious hate getting thrown around in the comment section.

Just ignore the haters, View.

We will all have to account for our words and deeds someday. God will not be happy . . .

You couldn't pay me to go there

I can only imagine the things being said there.

I wish I could find all of those losers who post on ESPN

And take them down like in the end of Jay & Silent Bob, but I’ll just ignore them.

I think most of them are around 14 years-old. A lot are obviously flat-out racist.

I hope they all get taken out like this...

We can start "bananna pellin" them all

Or we can be be proud of how Joepa lifted us up. I for one will be staying on this board and this board only as I watch the 82 sugar bowl and drink a couple of bottles of wine. I will always rember Coach like this.

There is a real lack of compassion in there.

Actually kind of unbelievable.

Joe accomplishes more by stepping out the door

Than all their mindless rants combined. Pay them no heed.

lol ESPN commenters
Thoughts and prayers from Purdue

I was fortunate to see this year’s game in Happy Valley before everything blew up. It was one of the most pleasant experiences of my sports life. JoePa is a legend that deserved a better end.

Thanks, Boiler!

Appreciate your kindness.

Thanks for the support
It is great to see the support around the nation.

UGA, Bama and Purdue all offering their support.

Thanks guys!

God Bless Joe and his family.

Words escape what an impact this man has had on so many lives, including mine.

We're praying for you, JoePa!
This is about Joe Paterno

Anyone anywhere who makes this about about anything other than Joe Paterno is revealing the kind of human debris they apparently are.

It's sad how much human debris is on the net

no way to keep up with the obvious ignorance out there

It’s depressing to see how many assholes are willing to show their rear ends
when they have nothing in their lives that compares with the great Joe Paterno

The media is responsible in many ways but posting this kind of crap at this news is beyond disgusting.

I am angry and depressed at the depth of human depravity.
And sad for Joe and the PSU family for having to suffer that kind of raw hatred even when ignored.

Love ya Joe.

Thank you for all you’ve done. You made Penn State an amazing place. You’ll live on for Penn Stater’s for eternity.

Fight on Joe

Do not go gentle into that good night

Beat me to it

and said it better than I would have. Captures my sentiments precisely.

God bless.

The last 4+ months have been very hard for me.

First my wife has had medical issues beginning in October culminating with surgery last week. Things are looking good on that front, still a lot of recovery left. My wife is clearly more important than my alma mater (shes a Western Mich Bronco) but it has been very difficult for me to display any emotion regarding our beloved Penn State and Joe, that is until tonight I finally lost it, while my wife was taking a nap.

This blog and board has been my PSU therapy through all this. As far as I know, I don’t personally know any you, but you’ve been my friends and support group. Thank you.

God bless you Coach, and your family.

Thanks for sharing! I’m glad to hear your wife is recovering! Isn’t it funny the places you find comfort! I think we have all found some solace here.

God bless you.

I pray it turns out for the best for your family.

My prayers are with you and your wife.

Ah, guess that makes sense

Recruit @Stevenbench had a cool shot of the west stands and field covered in snow

JoePa -- thank you for everything you have done for the PSU family

Words can’t express what JoePa has meant to the PSU family. He has brought honor and integrity to college football – he has brought countless fond memories for my family and me. I still get chills reliving the Miami v. PSU 1987 Fiesta Bowl…I remember my family all crying and hugging each other afterwards, filled with PSU pride. Thank you for putting State College on the map. Thank you for producing real men who have become productive members of society, even after their football careers ended. You will always be the number one Penn Stater. I hope we can all emulate the values you have instilled in us. May you forever rest in peace.

sara ganim tweeting that students are shoveling snow from paterno statue
i dreamt...

that Joe would recover, sandusky would go through his trial and off to jail, the 2012 season would play out w/o much fanfare off the field and 2013 would kick off with the renaming of the field and he would be there for a last wave to 110k.

hope is not lost but this is an emotional evening.

Joe will always live on

god bless the Paternos

I've had that same dream.

It doesn’t look like it’s in the cards.

This feels like the end to a tragic movie.

Is this reality? Sometimes I wish it was a really bad dream.

i couldn't agree more!!
This puts all the recruiting malarky into perspective, doesn't it?

I’m not paying any attention to the haters. They are beyond hope.

The haters won't bother me.

But there will be eulogies from some people and organizations that will infuriate me.

seeing syracuse b ball team lose

Makes me feel a little better tonite. ;)

Why?
two words

Jim boeheim

I've got a 10 year old son praying fervently right now for Joe's survival...

but as my wife says, when it is your time, it is your time. I guess I just never thought it would be Joe’s time, even as impossible as earthly immortality is.

Thanks, Joe. As much as I’ve been a Penn State football fan, I’ve been as much a fan of Joe Paterno the coach and Joe Paterno the person. Thanks for being someone that so many people could (and did, and still do) look up to, for being a bright, shining example of how to be a good person and do things right, as a coach and as a human being.

Per Twitter, multiple sources stating that 6:30 p.m. tonight was the time.

I feel ill.

That better be wrong
I've been contemplating how this would go as long as I can remember

Since at least the early 1980s, when I was old enough to contemplate such things, I realized that Joe would retire someday and then pass on and that I’d likely be alive to experience both. I never imagined it would go like this.

the time

that he has already passed?

Just sharing what I read.

I suppose unnamed sources are like assumptions.

I don't have anything official.

But I’ve heard the same thing from folks outside reportable channels.

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Could be wrong.

I’m not giving it full credit at this point. It’s just what I heard.

Thanks for the updates, its appreciated.
AND WE ALWAYS WILL BE

because of him

Old Man MainLion:

“I hope the entire board goes to hell. Also hope the news media is right behind if not there already.”

I agree, Pop. I agree.

Amen to that, bro.

They denied us the opportunity to send him off the way he deserved.

And they did to make him a scapegoat to save their own awful asses. I’ll NEVER forgive those assholes for that. NEVER.

I refuse to believe this.

Without hyperbole, the University better open the gates to the stadium.

Because in my heart, I know there will be 110,000 there. On a January night. In the cold. You’ll see I80 and I99 looking like a gameday. Because there are too many of us who want one last chance to say thank you.

That would be amazing

Under any other circumstances, I’d say this was a possibility. But I’m not sure anyone in Old Main now would do that. A shame too, because I would enjoy being proven wrong in this instance.

Well then they can arrest 110,000 of us for trespassing.

However they want to do it.

I'll drive from new york right now if they do
I would glady hop in a car from Boston to do so.
If I was still within driving distance of State College

I’d be right there with you

I think I could get in a car and drive from Dillsburg.
I'm 2 hrs away

And feel like doing it…

And I'd drive up from DC

Even though I’m sick as a dog right now…

I'm 8 hours away

And I’m contemplating it!

I'm 7.5 hours away and feel like doing it
So just circle it.
Revenge is a dish

best served cold, 02. We will vote out the ones we can, pressure the organizations and businesses who appoint others, and let the cowardly board members know they screwed the pooch on this whole situation.

Prayers for all of us

Sara Ganim tweeted 10 min ago that it's still just "serious"

Sometimes she infers things that aren’t valid and sometimes she quotes people who aren’t worth quoting, but she usually gets her facts right.

Hmmm

Joe represents everything good about penn state

I have been despondent and angry over so many things over the last months, but my devotion and respect for joe has never wavered. God bless you joe.

COACH YOU HAVE BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE A ROLE MODEL

Words cannot express the gratitude I have for you and what you have meant to me and my family. Please know that we will do our best to continue the solid foundation you have laid for all of us…

Thanks for the memories Joe.

We’ll never forget you.

At 9:00 p.m EST

I’ll be hosting a an online shot for the old man. RSVP here.

I will attend
I'll be in the Fan Posts.
How does that work, jesse.?

Still an FNG.

I just put a Fan post.

I’m doing a shot at 9:00.

I'm opening up a bottle of Jack Daniels I got for Christmas.
32 weeks pregnant....can't drink

But can cry. :(

32 weeks . .

Joe would want you to dry soon and be healthy for your little one! Bless You. Congratulations and feel life’s continuity

oh thank you!

This kid is a giant already and I’m hoping for a future PSU linbacker! I already am grooming one (who ironically last nite asked to read his “We are Penn State” book written by noneother than our own JoePa & Sue!

You're raising him right!

Congrats!

I don't have any likker,

but I drink to him.

I started drinking as soon as I saw this post.

So I’m in.

Wait

you guys haven’t already been drinking? Haha, I’m in.

I'm sitting on my couch crying like a baby

I just can’t comprehend it. Its not right. And I’m angry, so f-ing angry to those who tried to destroy him. May they rot in hell. And if its his time to go…go be with my grandfathers. The only other 2 men I have respected as much as you Joe.

Please don't be so sad and angry, lexi!

Try to remember how amazing his life has been. No, the story doesn’t seem to be ending well, which is super hard to cope with. But as he said, he had 61 great years at Penn State, a wonderful family that has always surrounded him with love, the opportunity to really make a difference in people’s lives, and 500,000+ fans who appreciate him for who he really is. Most of us will be lucky if we can say that when our time comes.

in

and there is probably one shot left in my old granddad bottle tonight….

How appropriate
Bought a new bottle on Thursday...

Not for this, though.

I am still holding out hope that he's fighting through this,

but from so many different unconfirmed sources, it’s hard to imagine. I started my honors class this semester by talking about Joe Paterno and what he meant to academics. I wanted my students to know how much I believe in Success with Honor and want to instill that in them. I never met Joe Paterno, but he has had a profound influence on my life and on my philosophy as a college professor. He’s such a great, kind man. He will always be an inspiration to me.

It's over folks.

God bless his soul.

How do we know this for sure?
seriously

O’BengPapong is claiming it as a false RT but Stupar had it up

We love you Joe!!

Be at peace.

"His mother wanted a doctor. His dad wanted a lawyer. All they got was a legend."

-Keith Jackson on Joe Paterno.

God bless Joe and family!

There are no words.

There is only a deep sense of pride in those that stuck by and disappointment in those that did not. I don’t think Joe would want us to mourn his passing, nor celebrate his achievements. I think he did everything he did because it felt right, and most every time it was. His legacy shall not tarnish nor his memory recede.

Thanks, Coach and family.

Thank you very much.

One bright side of all of this:

Angelo, George, and Joe get to see each other again.

Legends never die

Thanks, Joe.

Go with God, Coach.
I can't imagine what to say.
As Joe Paterno lies gravely ill, Penn State students begin to gather in vigil
Ben Jones says it is confirmed.

He has been refusing to address it until he said he knew something concrete. Not sure what to say.

I can't think or feel.
We will always remember you, Coach.

You have shaped more of us then you could ever know. God bless, you.

Nothing online has confirmed it
cbs news confirmed

Dan McGinn, the Paterno family spokesman, at 8:57 p.m. on reports about Joe Paterno’s death: “Absolutely not true.”
He made our university better.

Joe you will be missed.

Changing my pic to JoePa.

Least I can do.

Mine has been Joe's feet since the day I joined BSD.

Not to brag or anything…

And here I thought they were

Bilbo Baggins’ feet!!

Kind of odd but

Your new pix is the exact one I changed my FB page one to around 5 today when I started to hear Coach took a turn for the worse.
I love this picture of him

Reminds me of my Dad.

We buried him wearing a sweater along the lines of the one Joe is wearing in that pic.

I still wear the PSU tie

That my grandfather wore that Joe gave him at a fund raiser in the ealy 80’s. My grandfather was a huge supporter of coach and PSU football. I will be thinking of him tonight too.

WOW!

I would frame that tie!!

Very cool!

I have a picture of me and coach when I was a kid

That I framed and got him to sign just a couple of years ago. The mans heart is/was so big. He cared so much about so much more then just football

He signed a 1986 pamphlet for me.

My dad was working in the PSU locker room renovations and Joe was great. My dad asked him to sign something for me and he was so excited.

A great man through and through.

The stories are legion.

Truly an awesome man.

I was cashier at the Giant Supermarket.

He signed his receipt.

So, BOB

is going to wear khakis and some nice black rimmed glasses tomorrow right?

That would be awesome

Whether or not the reports are true, just wanted to say:

God Bless, JoePa.

Thanks, Gators!

Your support is appreciated.

I know it’s slightly dated now (because the reports were wrong)… but here’s a Tweet from Trey Burton. Our QB/TE/WE/RB.

Honored to play against him in his last bowl game… Such a sad story.. RIP Coach Joe Paterno.

I had that exact same thought when Paterno wasn’t the coach anymore. I thought it was fantastic that the Gators had the honor of playing against him and his players in what was his final bowl game.

We hope you appreciate the assistance our

QB gave you guys in getting that win.

We do. But in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter anymore.

True.

But it’s one of Joe’s relatively few bowl losses . . .

And out of all the bowl game victories JoePa had, I’ve always liked the win over Miami in the national championship game the best. Granted, I was like two-and-a-half years old when that game was played…

…but anytime “The U” losses, it’s a good thing.

Yeah, that one is special!!

I graduated in 1984, but was still in State College for that one. Town went crazy that night.

That’s awesome.

I have cousins-in-law in Gainesville.

Diehard Gator fans — good folks.

Yeah, I’ve got family and friends that have gone to Penn State. They are all good people as well. One of them signed me up for the Penn State athletic newsletter.

Stay with us during the tough times ahead.

We appreciate your support.

Thanks, and I will.

That is indeed an honor.

Thanks, and Press on Gator.

Sorry, Nick, I did overlook them.

Apologies, Hawkeye fans!

I'm not in any state to read through all this.

I’ll maybe get to it eventually. Hope that it is just too soon of a rumor or whatever, but man, I’ll miss you Joe. Shitty past few months you’ve had, but you’ll always be loved.

And anything else I can offer. This man meant more to me than anything else in this world. He will love on, he will be Penn State. I hate feeling fucking helpless because I will gladly do anything I can. I love you Joe. You will always be the inspiration, the epitome and the goal for what we can achieve. Fuck this SHIT!

I haven’t lost any respect for journalism in this country, THIS is putting me over the top

Realized long ago that every single one of those fuckers would rather be first than right

Every single on.

All sources have pulled back their stories....and Joe raises his middle finger!
Who has the pic of Joe with his middle finger pointed down?
Just posted.

See below.

Turns out CBS ran with the OnwardState article.

And it was wrong.

Great.

Deserve no less than to look like idiots.

As long as Joe is in no pain --

“Hold on, Coach, hold on!”

This family deserves more

Posting the man’s death before it even happens is complete horseshit

Would we expect anything less after all the other crap that got said?

Yeah, but Joe gets the last laugh.

Look at it that way.

he's still fighting

bc that’s what joe does. never count this man out

God Bless

Joe Paterno for all he’s done, perhaps he’ll start up the heaven football team and run a great show

Why can't I stop crying?
Family friend tells Sarah Ganim that he is very sick,

but still able to communicate. He’s giving it all he’s got.

Somebody is saying something wrong on the Internets?

Chris,

Despite Multiple Sources Reporting Otherwise?
Please be so kind as to name a couple of them.

Thanks for throwing kerosene on the fire.

CBS, Onward State, Patriot-News...

And as of now, they’re all backtracking.

Onward State

Once again their website is down

Internet meltdown.
This is bound to happen in our day and age, of course

But when the pinata is big, bloated, and takes on the look of a syphilitic pig, it’s so easy to swing away.

Reporters would rather be first than right

Disgusting

Can't Find Anything on CBS CBS NEWS CBS.COM, etc.

Did they pull the tweet?
They are certainly not backtracking.

Who at Patriot News?

The initial report was OnwardState.

CBS then ran with it hard. Everyone else saw CBS, thought it was good, and ran with it citing cbs. Then they ALL pulled all their tweets and stories offline. OnwardState even shut down for a little to clean it up.

Now this

OnwardState Onward State
We were confident when we ran with it, and are still trying to figure out where our process failed. We apologize sincerely for error. (2/2)

Ah yes, blame the "process".
Responsible journalism is dead

Hey, I’m confident running with it right now

Psh, if it's wrong

you can always just retract it later. Just hurry up and be first, hope for the best.

Apprently, Onward state made the initital report, which they have since appologized for

Everyone else was following on their report with no independent confirmation.

Then give Onward State credit:

At least one media outlet had the guts to apologize after making a mistake.

We ALL make mistakes. Admitting it makes them go away quicker.

In fact, Devon Edwards resigned as Managing Editor.

http://www.onwardstate.com/2012/01/21/a-letter-from-the-managing-editor-of-onward-state/

Devon was responsible for all this?

THE Devon?

I'll take your word for it.

Because that site isn’t loading. At all.

Is that Devon2012?
yep

he seems to be taking full responsibility. I applaud him for that, at least—and for publicly apologizing to the family. More than most others have done.

I do too.

Everyone screws up — sometimes big, sometimes small.

Owning it is the key.

Devon's a smart guy and a good writer.

And I’m sure that the Onward State people were going with the best available information to them at the time. Hell, I changed the title of this post to “Joe Paterno 1926-2012” based on a combination of their report, which included a reference to PSU players getting an email on Paterno’s death, and Mike Wallace and other football players tweeting RIP messages.

Yeah I picked a bad time to load this site on my phone when that title was up

Damn near lost my mind. Made me spontaneously cry in front of all friends haha.

Apology accepted for changing the title early, Chris.

/LOLZ

Just giving you crap, man!

Chris, for what it's worth

I know you get some shit on here. And I know I occasionally disagree with you. But overall, you seem to be a good editor of this place. Thanks for all the work you do to make the news accurate, and the site itself a positive place to talk amongst other PSU fans.

I'm one of Chris' ball-busters,

and I endorse this statement.

Thanks, guys.

It’s been a weird, bad night for a lot of people in some weird, bad ways.

Mike sure handed you a shit sandwich.
VOTE SHIT SANDWICH.

Giant Douche!

I see great minds think alike.
Dang. I voted for giant douche.

LOL beat you by seconds.
That's tough

esp. if you don’t like bread.

You can go ahead and change night

to first year running BSD.

What you said pretty much sums this all up

But seriously, I know you don’t hear it enough, but thanks.

I would have taken an apology

Which they gave. No need to step down, I would think.

People overreact so much.

He apologized. He admitted he was wrong. There’s no need to fall on the sword.

An apology was all that was neccessary

And it would still be more than any editor of any other major site would do. He wasn’t trying to drive up web traffic, he thought he had legitimate sources from the looks of it and they turned out not to be. He just happened to be first and he was wrong. His repeated apologies were enough.

Frankly, I never liked Devon very much, but . . .

. . . it isn’t his fault that a major new organization used a single-source website when running a story instead of confirming via multiple sources. Someone at CBS should be stepping down instead.

Seriously.

Devon manned up and fell on his sword, his initial mistake or not.

Where is someone from CBS who, oh by the way, didn’t even CREDIT onward state, but was very quick to point to them when it wasn’t true.

exactly

they take NO responsibility. dicks. so glad they’re a LOL trending topic right now.

"new" organization = "news" organization, of course
I was thinking the same thing

They are apologizing all over the place. CBS just pulled the story and is pretending they never published it.

This is very true
The Information Age: Errors traveling at the speed of light.
The height of embarrassment

is finishing an indoor soccer game, pulling up this thread (when it said he died), and spontaneously starting to cry in front of 10 of your best friends. I never thought this would have that much of an effect on me. I’m a 29 year old wreck of a man right now.

Are nominations still open?

Can we nominate Joe for Trustee?

So what I feared appears to have been true.

That he gave that interview because he figured it was his last chance to say anything on the horrible subject.

Pretty terrible how awful the end of a very good man’s life turned out.

Yeah, that was my fear, too.

Hope I’m wrong and he has at least one more interview left in him.

I'm not too hopeful of that.

I thought the interview was odd and not good PR at all. That’s why I figured he was only doing it (and the lawyers let him do it) because…..you know.

So sad…

Yet he really said nothing.
Another Hawkeye fan here

Keep fighting the good fight JoePa

Yahoo Sports' story about Paterno being ill

is literally about 90% about the scandal and 10% about the rest of his career. And the commenters are euphoric about the situation. What is the world coming to?

It’s funny, because in like 10 years, 95% of stories about JoePa will be about football, and 5% will be about the scandal and what happened after it.

From an outsider.

The comments about not knowing there can be rape between men infuriated me. It came off as him making excuses.

It felt like another excuse.

Can we discuss this later, hornedfrogs?
I'm just saying, don't be shocked when you see that people are being assholes on the internet.

I’ll leave now.

Thank you for providing an example of this

Good Lord, man.

Honestly, hornedfrogs,

we are willing to discuss things, just not right now.

Stop back later . . ..

I'm not willing to discuss this with people who choose to do so at this point.

No one else should either.

Please can you be considerate of what is going on

There will be plenty of time for you to talk about this. Tonight is not the night. You are fully entitled to your opinion, but can you please have some respect and save it for another time.

Do you know what tact is?
clearly not.
enjoy

the big least when they lose their AQ bid horned

They're not going to the Big East...
What's your excuse?
It came off as him making excuses.
It felt like another excuse.

for being a complete gaping a$$hole at a time like this?
You know nothing about this situation compared to people here that know far more than you can imagine. — And you think you have something to tell them/us?

Folks here have had to live with this everyday for months and have dedicated themselves to being informed way beyond your pitiful knee-jerk acceptance of the media. If you knew 10% of what the BSD readers know you wouldn’t be posting your holier-than-thou judgments.

Aurabass, I (and others) thank you for eveyrthing that you have done

But this really isn’t necessary right now. Just like what we said about what hornedfrog said, there will be a time and a place for that conversation, but now isn’t that time.

Please don’t take this as a sign of disrespect, because I really do think you’ve done good by all of your posts. I just REALLY don’t want this thread to turn into what every other thread about Joe has over the past 3 months.

Pleasant. Smart. Very tactful.
Thoughts and prayers

To Joe, his family, and the Penn State family.

Thanks, Ted!

Good to hear from you.

Ted, you probably aren't still hanging around

But thanks. You seem like a great guy and I appreciate your words here.

Very sorry to hear this news.

There will come a time when people will once again speak about his accomplishments. I look forward to that time as I know all of you do.

Go easy Joe Pa you are and always will be a great man. WE ARE all nittany lions tonight. From the bama nation with love.

Thanks...

…and congrats on the title. You guys deserved it!

Joe's giving it a fight.

I would have expected nothing less.

What's really sick is there are a lot of people who are positvely giddy about this right now.

And I’m not talking about “scandal people”. I’m talking about pre-scandal people who absolutely hated Joe so much they wished death on him. Honestly, I’ve had many Pitt fans flat out say to me “I can’t wait until Paterno dies…hopefully during a game.”

Sick, sick, sick people. That is one of the main reasons I hate Pitt football.

Don't apologize for hating Pitt football.

It’s healthy to let it out!!

I hope people remember, when it’s their turn to die, some of the things they said about Joe. Maybe they’ll regret running their mouths then . . . .

It's really funny.

For all of the academic standards and oversigning jokes we make, take a look at this thread. Now tell me who loves, respects, and appreciates intercollegiate athletics? The fans of Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia et al? Or Pitt fans like those? (Has one Pitt fan said anything?) I’m really glad we got the chance to play Bama twice, and Florida in a bowl game recently. Meeting the real fans totally changed my perspective.

Pitt basketball

is too busy losing at home

Truth

I’ll probably still make jokes about academic standards and over-signing , eventually, but it will be with respect.

Good point

I’ve met several SEC fans through work. Despite all the jokes we make, they’ve all been good people. Important to remember.

most of us are

there are always the ones who make bad decisions, but 51 weeks of the year, 99.9% of SEC fans are supportive of the other schools in the SEC.

In fairness

I have seen supporting comments from some Pitt fans in other threads. Please just don’t ask me for a link just now.

Don't ruin my Pitt contempt, PaJoe!

/LOLZ

Look, I hate 'em, too

Just wanted to be fair.

Actually, way back when the shit hit, my good buddy, a big Pitt fan, even called me and said he thought something was wrong the way things went down and that Joe was railroaded. So, while I hate Pitt, doesn’t mean I don’t respect some of the things they have accomplished there. Go Cardinals!

I only hate Pitt football

and the Pansy fans who think “12 – 0” redeems the whole series for them.

For some reason, I always figured he’d die during a game. Seemed kind of fitting.

Really. All you can say is "Fuck those people."

Nobody takes their sports as seriously as I do. NO ONE! But even still, no matter who it is (Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Jim Tressel, Lloyd Carr) once they leave the field of play and are no longer a threat to beating my teams I do not wish them or their families any harm or ill will. People who do that are subhuman who deserve a sharp metal object jammed in their temples.

Cal fan here

Hoping for the best for JoePa and the Penn State community.

Thanks, Jigglz!

Great to hear from the left coast — means a lot to hear the support.

Thanks

Jigglz

I bawled my eyes out

And apparently for nothing. But, that’s okay. Keep fighting Joe.

Not for nothing, for Joe.

If nothing else, the false reports and the reaction will remind Joe how universally loved he was by those that matter.

Anybody heard from Derry during all of this?
I've been looking for it. haven't seen it.
Sort of.

Waiting to hear further. Which is why I’ve been skeptical during all of this.

I hope and don't hope he shows up

Meaning I hope he is with his good friend Joe and Sue now, and doesn’t come on here to give us bad news.

Give it hell, Coach!

We believe.

Just because it feels right, let do it for JoePa, again....

WE ARE

Penn State.

Give ’em hell Joe. However this plays out.

Penn State.

Give ’em hell Joe. However this plays out.

PENN STATE !!!!!!!!
Joe is chasing down CBS

How the mistaken news spread

The page is blank
LOL, symbolic much?
It shouldn't be.

It’s worked a few times for me, but took a while. Their site has been getting crushed all night.

the pocket protector must be blocking your view.

OH, you said page, not Paige.

LOL!

I’m definitely not blank. Working on blotto, though.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this one merits Johnny BLUE

I'm getting the Laphroiag right now
Wrong thread.

Life Shots are in jesse.’s fanpost.

Oh, and I am.

WTF is going on . . . all i want to know is the truth
me too

I can’t take this. I have already cried my eyes out and now I don’t know what to feel

i've been almost to tears and drinking away sorrows

idk what to think now

"And the truth shall set you free."

Apparently the rumors of Joe’s demise are greatly exaggerated . . . but it doesn’t look good for the long term . . ..

If the dancing of ten thousand can save one child's life,

the prayers of a few hundred thousand can save one man’s life.

the truth is you can't trust the media, blogs, twitter, etc.

Until a family or a government official comes out and states something, assume its a rumor, lie, assumption, etc.

And never trust the government in the first 24 hours because they don’t know what’s happening. and never trust the government after 24 hours, because they’ve had time to put the coverup in place.

@JayPaterno: Drove by students at the Joe statue. Just told my Dad about all the love & support--inspiring him.

I do too, but this comment is amazing simply because I've read the last 10 years of comments.

And Sydney Penny!

Oh, wait . . . wrong thread. Sorry.

AWESOME

Keep it up students! Keep it up alumni!

Watching Clint Eastwood kick ass

in “Pale Rider”.

He’s a wuss compared to our JoePa.

I love Pale Rider!
It just ended.

Clint Eastwood 206 — bad guys 0.

That's funny because we are watching Clint Eastwood in Million Dollar Baby right now. Great flick.
Actually I think its pretty appropriate right now

and sums up how I am feeling in general towards espn and the media in general and every asshole that has texted me asking if he’s dead because they are hoping its true. so well said sir

Boy, maybe should be the focus right now.

But Ron Musselman is sucking his own dick that he didn’t report Joe’s death. Get over it, dude.

Hi guys.

I love all you Penn Staters tonight.

Seconded.

This year sucked balls and was exhausting and has made me so grateful to be here. This is where we’re supposed to be and who we’re supposed to be with.

Good thing I'm a

Comfort. (My last name — truly!)

Weird

I grew up in Allentown across the street from a family named Comfort. Always thought it was a sweet last name.

You guys have a hotel named after you?

And booze! Even Better

That is a fantastic name!

First thing to make me smile all night as my apartment is pathetically alcohol free. You have to have some awesome pick up lines with a name like Comfort.

The only time it was a handicap

was in basic training. I did a lot of push-ups being “Private Comfort”.

I turned down West Point, because if I had been promoted to an Army O-4, I would have been “Major Comfort”. If I had earned stars, “General Comfort” — thought the military was not ready for that.

Well I'm drunk
+1

Dogfish Head has been my shepard

What flavor?
Hellhound and Ta Hanket

simply amazing styles

Just finished a bottle of Namaste

Tried Bitch’s Brew yet?

no, Bitch's Brew and Liquor de Malt are my wish list of DFH styles
Randomly found out Allen St Grille had last year

Went there for my birthday with some friends last year, saw it sitting on top of their bar and immediately ordered it. Great stuff.

baller. i was just on the DFH website, so many different forms of greatness i still need to try
Recommend actually visiting the brewery

I plan on going myself, but plenty of friends who’ve been said it fantastic

i've been to the rehobeth beach brew pub. need to get to the actual brewery
And the night is young.
That shot for Joe at 9 got out of hand real quick
It did, didn't it?

It jumped up a notch…

Thanks to all those in the BSD (and PSU) family tonight

If I have to go through this tonight, it’s made better going through it with all of you.

No Problem

Anytime

If anyone needs a laugh, #CBSSportsSays is trending on Twitter

Link

Thank you for that
LOL

Thank you for this. I needed a good laugh, and these are awesome. Almost makes me want to join twitter.

leave it to Joe

To run a fake when no one expects it

looks like onward state is stepping down

Onward state editor to step down

It's really

The only thing he can do if he wants to attempt to keep onward state reputation in a somewhat positive light

Is that a good thing,

or bad?

I think it's a good thing for their credibility

And for journalism. Someone is actually taking responsibility for their actions. The MSM could learn a thing or two from them.

I do feel bad though, because I think he truly thought his information was accurate.

That's what I think too

If he had multiple sources he trusted telling him the same thing, he should have reported it. He was wrong and I don’t think I’ve ever been happier to hear it. He’s a known factor around here, he loves Penn State and Joe just as much as the rest of us and wasn’t looking for fame at his expense when he made the report, he thought he had something that people needed to hear. He showed his true colors, that he’s a good person, with his repeated apologies and (unnecessary) resignation.

It's bad. He's a young buck, everyone should cut Devon some slack.
They need to

stick to fluff pieces on the new Burger King opening and leave twitter alone for a bit.

They fucked up big time tonight.

CBS ran this uncorroborated story? Mike Wallace is rolling in his grave right now.
So is Dan Rather.

Oh wait, he’s not dead yet.

Neither is Mike Wallace, but close enough, right?
Mike Wallace is an ornery cat.

He will never die.

This comment seems really good and funny right now.
Those who can, do;

those who can’t, teach (nothing personal, educators); those who can neither do nor teach, scribble shit and call it “journalism”.

Thanks?

Not sure there.

I forgot to use the sarcasm font.

Thanks:o)

Yeah us teachers

Constantly getting pooped on, but we know we are superior!!!

You have to be superior

in order to move into the Ivory Tower.

Funny story

When I was getting an MA from UNCG our library was 8 stories tall and all white, we actually nicknamed it the ivory tower.

LOL! You know that Pitt has

The Tower of Ignorance, right?

FTFY.

You know that Pitt has is The Tower of Ignorance, right?

Yeah, my cousin went there

That tower though is really nice inside, beautiful architecture and rooms. Sad it is on that campus.

Hey now

I’m a journalist.
But I just write about doctors and medicine. Different kind of thing.

Shotgunning everybody

on that post. Woo-hoo!

For which publication?

I have a PhD in Health Policy and Administration.

theheart.org, we're part of Medscape
I hope he lives another 20
I meant...

I hope he lives another 20 or 30 years.

Can I just say

There is no place…online…i would rather be then right here at this time with all you Penn Staters.

Now go give em hell Coach, you still have things to do to clear your and Penn States name.

Right there with you

I may be 200 miles from State College, but I feel connected being here with you guys.

We may fight each other from time to time, but this is family here.

We may argue amongst ourselves, but let a troll step in, then………

I hear ya Ab4PSU

We are all Penn Staters, through thick and thin, and family even if we may never meet each other.

We are all Penn Staters and that means family.

It’s bigger than wins and losses, losing recruits or gaining recruits. Its what Joe Paterno has taught us all.

That is something

That people outside of our community just can’t understand. When we say we are a family, we actually mean it. Penn State means so much to us, no matter what happens.

agreed

People say that Penn Staters don’t get it. I truly think that they are the ones who don’t get it, but our “it” is a different it.

Exactly

And it is so hard to try and explain it to people.

It's not that we don't get it.

It’s just that we have wildly different definitions of “it”.

You are very eloquent
"It all depends on what the definition of "it" is."

Hmmm, where have I heard that before . . . .

I've given up

no one outside the Penn State community can fully understand, and it’s too difficult to explain. Every time I’ve tried has been fruitless.

I've moved beyond caring what other people think.

The older I get, the more I don’t care. They can go to their graves stupid.

While we're on the topic of what other people think

I haven’t read ESPN, but everywhere else, yeah, it seems people have been remembering the good things he’s done, and nothing to do with the scandal. Seems like a lot of people are having a very, very positive outlook on his life.

Ha, unfortunately not even close

Yahoo Sports and CBS Sports comments are a cesspool of unbridled hate and joy that Joe could possibly have passed away.

The yahoo comments seemed really good to me

At least the top rated comments were, not the scrolling every other comments

Don't read the comments unless you want to lose all faith in humanity

But if you do, remember that those commenters are angry, uneducated, miserable, hopeless bastards who suck at life in general. Either that or spammers.

Plus, the top rated comments are, by definition, representative of the non-commenting opinion

people who aren’t total complete douchebags have a strange way of knowing when to shut up.

I still remember being an 18 year old freshman

I was in Cancun, wearing a PSU shirt and I walked into some dive burger store after a night of drinking -only to hear a table of people start yelling “we are!” It didn’t matter that they were twice my age, or that we were in another country. We immediately had a connection and started talking about how great Penn State was.

I embarrass my 19-year-old son,

just by telling him I yell “WE ARE!” at people driving other cars with Penn State logos on them.

If he went to PSU he wouldn't be embarressed.

I’m only 24 and I do the same thing. Hell, I was stuck in traffic outside DC the day of the Bama game this year and damn near had a full conversation with the guy in the SUV next to me, because we both had PSU stickers on our windows.

I think he'll wind up an East Carolina Pirate

unless I get even more disgusted with current employment and move us.

They should reinstate JoePa as HC

For his final moments. Lets just hope it is for another 20 years.

HAHA.

Imagine the call to BOB.

Joyner: Yeaaaahhhh . . . sooooooo . . . we thought he wasn’t going to make it. . . but he actually bounced back really well . . . you’re not going to be able to come to PSU.

BOB: Wait . . . what?

"And we're betting the entire Penn State endowment fund

against the Pats making it to the Super Bowl."

Thank God for BSD during all of this

The one place I know that I can go to get the real story

This bears repeating

I stopped going to the MSM almost completely and I am way more well informed because of it.

We Are Penn State

I just got on to see whats up and this!

Dear God! I love you Joseph Vincent Paterno!

God Bless Joe and his family…… That is all of us

WE ARE PENN STATE

Time to post "JoePa Facts"

Fact: JoePa was such a bad ass as a player; he once was penalized for horse collar tackling a pterodactyl.
Fact: JoePa once taught an octopus how to play linebacker.
Fact: During a head to head hit, JoePa cracked the skull of a Triceratops…JoePa wasn’t wearing a helmet.
Fact: While roaming Pangaea, JoePa challenged a Merychippus to a foot race and won.
Fact: JoePa has only burped once. It is commonly referred to as the Big Bang.
Fact: JoePa frequently won wrestling matches with saber-tooth tigers.
Fact: JoePa made footballs from the skin of T. Rex.
Fact: Bored on Antarctica, JoePa completed the world’s first cold fusion reaction when he slammed his two fists together.
Fact: When mapping the fjords of Greenland during the 16th century, JoePa made the first field goal posts from the tusks of Narwhals.
Fact: JoePa won every event in the first ancient Olympic Games.
Fact: Angered over his mother’s indiscretion, JoePa ate every snake in the Garden of Eden. God rewarded Joe with the creation of football.
Fact: It was not a meteoroid that killed the dinosaurs, rather the aftershock of a JoePa touchdown spike.

Solid gold,

except for the slight on JoePa’s mother!

Ahh, nice try. But pretty unbelievable

Except, I think he really did teach an Octopus to play linebacker.

They are really smart!!

And he is a good teacher

It was believable

until the touchdown spike.

Seriously. We are Penn State.

That's why he tells his players not to celebrate.
BS

Joe would not spike the ball

So I wrote a fanpost a little while ago...

I just want to apologize to Joe, to the Paterno family, and BSD for my fanpost earlier. I still mean every word that I wrote, but I wrote it under the false pretense that Joe had passed. Of course the Old Man proved all of us wrong again! God bless him for that and keep fighting, Joe. We all love you, Joe and hope to have you with us for a long, long time.

Secondly, thanks BSD community for being here during what has become an extremely difficult and roller coaster night. We Are!!!!

Penn State

I know what you mean by rollercoaster, been up and down for me as well. Other friends keep checkin in with me to see if I am okay, since they know I am such a hige Penn Stater

WEK, I don't think

an apology is necessary. (A) For those of us not in Happy Valley, we have to rely on other sources to give good info — not our fault if they shit the bed. (B) Your eulogy was outstanding and heartfelt — just a little early.

Thanks, 84, I really appreciate that

Maybe I feel guilty because my girlfriend (also a PSU grad) told me throughout every report that "Joe is still alive, I need Sue to tell me he is gone for me to believe it! I can tell you, I have never said more emphatically, “Honey, you’re right.”

Heck, I tell my wife of 32 years

“Honey, you’re right!” every other sentence . . . One can’t be too careful, ya know.

Well said

That is rec worthy, sir!

Had to say that.

She was on BSD earlier tonight. Might still be here . . .

Who is Mrs. Comfort?

I have to meet her!

Just asked her to check in.

Might take her awhile to find this part of the thread.

Hi Page2PSU,

Lovely to reply! I’ve been reading (& listening) for quite a while. Just got my on signon last week. You are #1PSUdiva!!!

I don't know about that!

But I have taught your hubby everything he knows about BSD! Would love to have dinner with y’all next time I’m in Raleigh.

Look forward to that.

Just e-mail me, and we’ll set it up!

Probably be in July.
Very good!

Our fiscal year closes 30 June — July is busy for me — but we will get together!

Dinner, It's a date.

Thanks Page.

Had to say .... (maybe since

It is Saturday night !!!

You found us, sweetie!

ILY!

Found, then lost ...

so many posts keep popping up and my screen goes to neverland ;(

P.S. As a RCC, I need to say this for my own sake.

God, I merely am using humor in a time of grief, sadness, and fright. Do not confuse this, or me, with being a heathen. I know you can strike me down in an instant. Mr. Cash told me so.

RCC?
Roman Catholic Christian.
Even sober I don't think I would have figured that one out.
AH, yes, gotcha.

Not sure how I missed that.

Ah, thanks

I was thinking Royal Crown cola.

Thanks . . .

Now I feel like I should get a Novena going.

I have jumper cables if you need them.

Those old Chevys can be tough to get started.

Was just talking with my brother

Who graduated from PSU, and we were saying that we can see JoePa treating all the nurses and doctors like he was still coaching, like:

“ahh, you know we are goign to try some things here and see if we can be a good nursing team”

HAHAH, I love it.

To risk going too far:

This cancer and infection has a good team. If our nurses and doctors aren’t careful this will kick our teeth in. We gotta see how the nurses and doctors respond to some adversity, find out how they respond.

Well I think if we don't do something right

We might get licked.

I understand where you're going with this.

I’m like Chandler on Friends: Inappropriate humor is how I deal with stress.

Thank God those close to me understand that.

So hold on for a second, let me get this straight

Devon, the guy who wrote a fanpost about being glad Harry Kalas died because he (Devon) was a mets fan, the same guy who got banned from BSD for some similarly insensitive and stupid comments about a PSU basketball player, that guy is the managing editor for Onward State, and that guy just resigned after falsely reporting that Joe had died? Is that really the same guy?

I hope somebody can tell me this isn't the case.

But I think it is.

wait wait wait, Devon was the managing editor for Onward State
It's him.

Confirmed by Chris above.

So CBS ran with a story...

…confirmed by a guy that got banned on BSD. That’s fucking hysterical.

Wow

I wasn’t around here for that.
Onward State seems like a concept but a number of things I’ve read there are really asinine.

Devon has grown up quite a bit since then.
Clearly.

But it’s still pretty funny. In a night where I’m looking for humor under the couch cushions.

How about just some OT news?

Sukay was defensive MVP in the East/West game.

Did you see his INT?
I am so upset I missed this, though I had friends let me know right away

what does this do for possible draft stock? I thought I heard he prob wasn’t gonna be drafted.

He's a 7th rounder at best still most likely
Just the replay.

Dude has been a ball hawk for two years now, not surprised.

I was watching the game,

while also on twitter. Caught it live. He was all over the field the whole game!

Yeah,

He was and is a young guy. Give him an even break.

Even guys who were in Joe's doghouse could work their way out.

So yeah, Devon too.

Joe Paterno

My life was better for having known you Joe. That is all I can say.

This whole fucking thing

is just surreal.

i was at the statue for the whole thing since around 8

the emotion was nothing like Ive ever experienced in my 22 years. Just a emotional night

Thanks for sharing with us, tirpsu.

Would like to see pics if any are available. What a beautiful tribute to an amazing man!

i have one from where i was but its not good quality

I understand the candles by joe's feet

but every pic i see like this makes me think people are trying to set him on fire like some sort of sacrifice

lol.

my phone sucks really bad. I should have taken more. fuck it its all i got.

It's pretty damn amazing as it is.
No it's great

Just commenting on every photos I’ve seen posted by the statue

lol Ithought the same thing.

I know what the purpose is, but some of the photos look really bad.

Joe's walking through fire

to impress the non-believers.

Takes a lot to make bronze burn.
Good to see, thanks!
Can't decide if I'm going staying in because I'm so sad

or going out because I’m so relieved. I can either cry in my pillow or cry on some poor confused guy’s shoulder.

Go out

and wear your PSU proud!!!

Well, as long as it's a cute guy :o)
Honestly,

the comedic value of the situation might be worth digging out my skinny jeans and finding a pair of heels.

Honey,

those should always be on hand at your age!

I think they're in my duffle bag?

I suck at being a college aged female.

Weird

I was going to say the exact same thing.

I'm sure that'll impress tat girl.
judging from some of the other people at the bar

it just might.

tat girl?

Is she the one that made Pryor commit to OSU?

No, that was probably tub girl

KForttress11 Khairi Fortt

USA scores in the 98th minute to beat Venezuela

WOOOOOOOOOO USA USA USA
the Penn Stater on the women's US team

just tore her ACL & something else (MCL? Meniscus?) and will likely have to sit out the olympics :(

Ali Krieger

Worse, the injury was against the DR. USA won like 15-0. If FIFA made sense, that game would never happen.

so unfortunate for her :(
Just got back, and I've been reading the internet for the past 15 minutes

Yeah….. I dunno, I don’t know what to say

Guys, I'm heading out

I’ve only been around here for a few months, but I can’t thank you all enough for being a great community. God bless. Let’s hope tomorrow morning brings good news.

WE ARE…!

PENN STATE!!!
Night, Ryan!

Catch up with ya later!

Penn State!

Hopefully tomorrow morning we can all laugh about the time we thought Death had the balls to come after Joe Paterno.

Still the best background ever

this is my favorite game from the student section.

hands down. ill never forget his speech.

That speech was seriously kick ass
I was in the Studnet section for the '02 OSU game

When Joepa beat the Bear’s record. Loudest thing I ever heard in my life. Can still hear that stadium jumping when we won.

me too!!

cept I can’t remember too much. That’s the alcohol for ya.

Sorry, 01

Still have the ticket!

I was there wearing my 324 shirt!
I was in the senior section

Can’t remember what I was wearing.

Clothes I presume.

I have this awesome shirt,

On the front it says, “Dear Mr. Bryant,” on the back it says, “Sorry Bear, it’s 324 time in Happy Valley. Fall 2001”

Nice

I bet you looked real hot in that shirt!!

Okay, been drinking for awhile since I heard about all of this tonight.

I did! LOL!

I still wear it occasionally, although not so much since I moved to Alabama in 2004.

Pictures?

Seriously, sorry for any and all comments from here on out form me, Stoli 100 proof might make me go “funny”

I would have to look in some boxes

in the attic for pictures. I don’t like pictures of myself.

I know exactly what you mean

I think I look awful in every picture of me.

I know I do!
disagree

you’re too hard on yourself.

I likely was very close to you.

Well, by stadium standards. I had tickets in the middle upper senior section.

What sticks out the most, besides the game, is after, during preparation

for the celebration, they played the theme from Backdraft.

I had junior tickets

we’re all awesome.

I was somewhere in the senior section

(since I was a 4th year PhD student), but don’t remember where. I have the ticket in a box somewhere.

ML,

I was very close to you.

Unrequited love is a hell of a thing.
When Mills

turned the corner on that 69 yard run, were we holding hands?

It's just like you to forget the kiss.
thanks for the humor tonight ML

it’s MUCH appreciated!

Life sucks.

May as well laugh at it as often as possible.

You know, I remember turning to a guy 2 minutes before half time and joking about how it didn't look like things would work out for Joe.

And he showed me up. Tonight is like deja vu all over again.

Amazing how an old guy

keeps it fresh, isn’t it?

Peace and well wishes to the Paterno family and all Penn State fans
Washington State.

Solid.

I am really tired of people using moral outrage...

as an excuse to act immorally.

I don’t really believe in heaven or God, I believe we each have one chance on this Earth and that living a legacy that people will never forget is our one shot at immortality.

I hope that one day I will leave even half the legacy that Joe will when he takes his last breath. And take comfort in the high likelihood that the bottom feeders trying to tear him down, even now, will remain as obscure as the screen names they hide behind. Obviously, their mothers and fathers did not love them enough and they were never lucky enough to have a man or woman that was anything like Joe Paterno in their lives.

No words

Just sadness

Thanks, Hawkeye!

Some others in your clan have checked in — we appreciate the support!!

I for one will be wearing PSU gear for the next few days

In honor of JoePa and what he meant for all of us. Anyone care to join me? Might even do a white out tomorrow for Coach.

3/4 of my shit is PSU.....

and i wouldn’t have it any other way.

definitely tomorrow

can’t really on monday with work dress code…but I’ll try to work in something. maybe just blue and white.

Wear it under your dress shirts

Have done that before.

no dress shirts

different code for women, if I was a guy I’d surely be sporting a penn state tie.

Didn't know you were a Hottie

My apologies my dear lady.

man, just when I thought I was becoming known around here!

LOL

It is really hard

To tell who is a dude and who is a Hottie.

Look for who is using the period key --

those are the Divas.

/Give no credit to me for that one

So wait,

I can’t be a dude and a hottie? I resent that.

Oh I know you a Sexy bitch!!!
Well, if you had a soul

then you might be a hottie.

Too bad for me then, I guess.
aw, in my heart you are, boss!

Yeah, with 1,100 comments.

You're in DC aren't you?

It’s cold now, wear a jacket.I’m in that area, and I make it a point to wear a PSU jacket / sweatshirt to work every day. Not in the dress code, but as long as I take it off when I get there it;s ok. And then I get to hang it by my desk for everyone to see all day.

yep

good call! It’s not as warm as my winter coat but it should do

I also have my ESPN college gameday penn state knit cap I got when gameday was there for the 2005 OSU game. Love that hat.

It's a little harder for the Divas!
exactly

I’m sure I’ll come up with something though. At the least I have my sterling silver Penn State football pendant to wear.

I'm a teacher.

I’ll be wearing a PSU t-shirt under a cardigan, jeans, and flats.

blue and white is acceptable.
Would join you

in the whiteout, but I’ll be wearing my blue PSU polo to church tomorrow to pray for the Paterno family, maybe after! And I have already decided I’ll be wearing my relatively new “Thank You Joe” t shirt I got for Christmas, great thing about being a PE teacher to get away with t shirts occasionally….especially for this

Yeah I might need to start class

With a lecture on the greatness that is Joseph Vincent Paterno

Words escape me.

My best to JoePa, his family, and all of you at Penn State.

Thanks, Tez!

If you can read through this entire thread, you can see the full spectrum of human emotion. It is all here tonight . .. .

Same feeling here Tez

Same here

Joe...one of the greats in college football.

Love and prayers from a Cornhusker.

And is Sue one of the greatest wives ever? When all of that crap was going on, with all of the media swarming the Paterno house, I saw such passion and affection between Joe and Sue, and such strength from Sue. When you give Joe his well-deserved Kudos, please include this amazing women.

Thanks, RedValley!

The support from other areas/teams’ fans has been amazing — we appreciate it!!

Thanks redvalley

Appreciate the love from Husker nation.

Another Hawkeye fan stopping by,

and I want to say that this may be a blessing for Joe. Everything I say from here on is meant respectfully, not critically. I thought he got a raw deal by being fired, but I also think it is possible that he could have done more about Sandusky. If he does pass soon, he (and, I hope, his family) will be spared a massive legal headache in the next few months or years. And, with lung cancer, I’d guess that Joe will also be spared some physical pain (and his family some emotional pain) if he passes soon instead of after a long, drawn-out fight with cancer.

I’ve always admired Joe and the PSU football program. My junior high football team had the same uniforms (the only difference being that we didn’t have numbers on the shoulders of our jerseys). I have a relative that looks a lot like JoePa did about 20 years ago (that relative has been asked for “your autograph, coach” by mistake). So, even when PSU was beating the piss out of Iowa in the 90s, it was tough to hate PSU. On a side note, I have absolutely no problem hating Ohio State.

So, to all you PSU fans, please don’t be too sad for too long. Joe is a legend, and you’ll always have the memories he helped to provide. Hawkeye fans will be dealing with something slightly similar when Hayden Fry or Dan Gable passes. Oh, who am I kidding, Dan Gable will never die.

Speaking of wrestling, good luck for tomorrow’s dual (Iowa vs PSU, I think it will be on Big Ten Network at 9 pm ET on Sunday).

Best wishes and prayers to everyone, and particularly Coach Paterno and his family/friends/players.

Thanks, Chazz.

Come back later so we can show you the light. Joe did a ton — it’s not all in the public domain yet.

Sorry, looks as if your wrestlers and women's BBall met their waterloo in Happy Valley today.

Didn’t see the wresters but your gals are scrappy. Glad Wahlin will be graduating and we don’t have to meet them again this year at your stomping grounds.

Thanks for stopping by.

We're around 900 comments and I'm going to bed at some point.
