Joe Paterno is gravely ill and family members have been summoned to the hospital to say their final goodbyes, according to multiple reports including Blue White Illustrated's Tom McAndrew, Wilkes-Barre's Citizens-Voice, and others across the state. Earlier tonight, Onward State reported that Paterno was taken off a respirator (this is also being denied as of 9:45 Saturday night).
Michael Sisak of the Citizens-Voice had this information:
Paterno's wife, Sue, summoned close friends and longtime staff members this afternoon to the State College hospital where Paterno has been undergoing treatments since last weekend.
Paterno wanted to see them and say a final goodbye, Sue told one of the staff members, the source said.
Also, the Associated Press reports that Paterno's doctors have "characterized his status as serious" and quotes Paterno public relations point man Dan McGinn: "Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications."
Obviously, this is beyond a delicate subject, especially here. More updates as they become available.

Thank you Joe.

It's remarkable how correct Joe was
That he feared for his health if he ever stepped down from the job.

Can't say we didn't see this coming. Bear Bryant died shortly after retiring as well. It's like football was the only thing that kept them hanging on.
God Bless you, Joe Pa.
burmbuster - January 21, 2012
I think we should be realistic.
This is a sad sad day. But I don’t think not coaching killed Joe. I mean, I don’t think he developed lung cancer in one week. It just manifested itself and hit all at once.
As for Bear Bryant, Bryant coached before the internet era, before ESPFuckingN was what it is now, etc. Bryant’s coaching career probably ended right about the time where there was still a little respect for an icons private life. I remember reading that Bryant may have actually been sick before he retired, and that it wasn’t retirement that killed him.
In any event, this is truly a sad day for Nittany Nation. I was talking to my cousin and he said if Joe is interred in Brooklyn and they drive the body there as opposed to flying, the highways should be lined for the procession. He said he’d call off work. I will too if I have to.

va2pennstate - January 21, 2012
Yes, Coach Bryant was sick before he retired. But that's not why he retired. I just believe that coaches like the Bear and Joe Pa live for what they do.
Joe Pa was the last of the greats to stick with his university instead of skipping around from paycheck to paycheck.
burmbuster - January 21, 2012
You're dead on right about that!!!
This was never about money for Joe. That’s what made him the man he is, and not some opportunistic whore.
He stayed long enough to put down roots and make a difference, just like his father wanted him to do. Joe’s dad can definitely rest in peace knowing his son made a difference.

Completely devastated.
The two men I admired most in my life, with all their faults. My grandfather, 82. in a nursing home, who doesn’t know my name. My adopted grandfather JoePa, who spent his last days shamed for one misstep. I couldn’t be more heartbroken than I am right now. I spent a lot of time with three of his grandchildren in college. This is about Joe Paterno
Anyone anywhere who makes this about about anything other than Joe Paterno is revealing the kind of human debris they apparently are.
Jitterbug - January 21, 2012
It's sad how much human debris is on the net
no way to keep up with the obvious ignorance out there
It’s depressing to see how many assholes are willing to show their rear ends
when they have nothing in their lives that compares with the great Joe Paterno
The media is responsible in many ways but posting this kind of crap at this news is beyond disgusting.
I am angry and depressed at the depth of human depravity.
And sad for Joe and the PSU family for having to suffer that kind of raw hatred even when ignored.
aurabass - January 21, 2012
It's just indicative of this debased society.
When people can post things without even using their real name it makes it real easy for people to be tough guys.
This whole affair has been personal for me from another front. There are people where I work who don’t like me, and have said numerous things about me when I’m not around, but don’t have the guts to say anything directly to me when I’m right in front of them. Just like the BoT firing Joe. They couldn’t even look at him face to face and give Joe a chance to defend himself or answer questions.
This country is full of nothing but selfish, gutless cowards. If this is the end for Joe, it is tragic also in that there is one less person in the world who actually do what’s right, regardless of the consequences.
Ab4PSU - January 21, 2012
Rec'd
And im with you
I fear for our nation
hbeach08 - January 21, 2012
What this teaches us
is we all must be leaders, all the time. If we’re inspired by the Joe Paternos, it’s incumbent on us to so inspire others in his mold, if not his name, to guide the small slice of society we influence in his vision. Yes there are miriad bad influences that make us fear for the future, but there are far more strong families that form our national foundation than those capturing headlines and stealing our faith. We can vindicate this man who has taught so much and been sullied by a vocal few by teaching others who, and what, he is, and was. We’ll be fine, in large part because of the Joe Paternos of the world, but I’m not ready to say goodbye, who could ever be?
PSUMarine78 - January 21, 2012
I have come to the conclusion
that leadership is more precious than gold or diamonds, and 100x rarer. That said, JVP has offered us a positive example for decades.

I refuse to believe this.
Without hyperbole, the University better open the gates to the stadium.
Because in my heart, I know there will be 110,000 there. On a January night. In the cold. You’ll see I80 and I99 looking like a gameday. Because there are too many of us who want one last chance to say thank you.

That would be amazing
Under any other circumstances, I’d say this was a possibility. But I’m not sure anyone in Old Main now would do that. A shame too, because I would enjoy being proven wrong in this instance.

Try to remember how amazing his life has been. No, the story doesn’t seem to be ending well, which is super hard to cope with. View from the Booth - January 21, 2012
I am still holding out hope that he's fighting through this,
but from so many different unconfirmed sources, it’s hard to imagine. I started my honors class this semester by talking about Joe Paterno and what he meant to academics. I wanted my students to know how much I believe in Success with Honor and want to instill that in them. I never met Joe Paterno, but he has had a profound influence on my life and on my philosophy as a college professor. He’s such a great, kind man. He will always be an inspiration to me.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
I already did my heartfelt post for the day
but your second to last sentence is eerily similar to what I posted on Facebook a bit ago:
Dear Joe,
You and I have never met. You wouldn’t know me if I stood right in front of you. But I, and many others like me, owe so much of what we are today to you.
We studied in a library you helped build. We met our best friends at a university you helped put on the map. We cheered on a football team that you coached to the ideal of ‘Success with Honor’.
You weren’t perfect, Joe. And you never pretended to be. But you were perfect for us, and that’s all that matters.
Get through this, Coach. You have an entire Nittany Nation behind you.

I think this owuld be fitting for a great man who lived a life of literature
Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell;
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell’st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die
John Dunne
May Christ who rose from the dead, our true God, moved by the intercession of his spotless Mother and of all the Saints, place the soul of His departed servant in the tabernacles of the just; may He lay him to rest in the bosom of Abraham, numbering him among the just; and may He, who is both good and kind, have mercy upon us. I’ll maybe get to it eventually. Hope that it is just too soon of a rumor or whatever, but man, I’ll miss you Joe. Shitty past few months you’ve had, but you’ll always be loved.

joefromboalsburg - January 21, 2012
The initial report was OnwardState.
CBS then ran with it hard. Everyone else saw CBS, thought it was good, and ran with it citing cbs. Then they ALL pulled all their tweets and stories offline. OnwardState even shut down for a little to clean it up.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012

And I’m sure that the Onward State people were going with the best available information to them at the time. Hell, I changed the title of this post to “Joe Paterno 1926-2012” based on a combination of their report, which included a reference to PSU players getting an email on Paterno’s death, and Mike Wallace and other football players tweeting RIP messages.

People overreact so much.
He apologized. He admitted he was wrong. There’s no need to fall on the sword.
Ab4PSU - January 21, 2012
An apology was all that was neccessary
And it would still be more than any editor of any other major site would do. He wasn’t trying to drive up web traffic, he thought he had legitimate sources from the looks of it and they turned out not to be. He just happened to be first and he was wrong. His repeated apologies were enough.
Rogue Nine - January 21, 2012
Frankly, I never liked Devon very much, but . . .
. . . it isn’t his fault that a major new organization used a single-source website when running a story instead of confirming via multiple sources. Someone at CBS should be stepping down instead.
CvilleLion - January 21, 2012
Seriously.
Devon manned up and fell on his sword, his initial mistake or not.
Where is someone from CBS who, oh by the way, didn’t even CREDIT onward state, but was very quick to point to them when it wasn’t true.

TheWrathofQBEagles - January 21, 2012
It’s funny, because in like 10 years, 95% of stories about JoePa will be about football, and 5% will be about the scandal and what happened after it.

I hope that isn't the case.

hornedfrogs45 - January 21, 2012
It's cool, hornedfrogs.
We are hyper-sensitive to anything that looks like criticism — especially tonight when it looks like a death watch for Joe.
Seriously, come back later on, and join in the conversations. Penn Staters’ reactions are mixed about Joe and the whole situation (except for Sandusky and the kids).
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
we know a lot of people don't look at Joe fondly right now.
We also know a lot of people have taken certain things he’s said out of context, and also fail to realize that he’s an 85 year old dying man going through the biggest crisis of his professional career, meanwhile under the influence of various medications.
The JuggerNitt - January 21, 2012
No, that's not true.
Look back at the original post. He didn’t ask anything. He said it was a bad sign of humanity that they could be happy about someone’s death.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Correct
I of course can understand how people wouldn’t have a high regard for him, that certainly wasn’t my argument. I was lamenting how so many people are taking pleasure in this man (possibly) dying.
TheWrathofQBEagles - January 21, 2012

You know nothing about this situation compared to people here that know far more than you can imagine. — And you think you have something to tell them/us?
Folks here have had to live with this everyday for months and have dedicated themselves to being informed way beyond your pitiful knee-jerk acceptance of the media. If you knew 10% of what the BSD readers know you wouldn’t be posting your holier-than-thou judgments.

No matter how this turns out tonight, tomorrow, I wanted to share this
Im sitting here at the computer reading along, and I look over, on top of the desk is my 7 year old sons baby book. Its one of those ones where you can slide a picture into the front cover. Im sitting here looking at this picture…..
In 2003, My two brother-in-laws, my buddy, and myself got an opportunity to go on a road trip to Notre Dame vs. USC for the game. When I got home Sunday night, after having dropped them all off at home, I walk in the door and my wife says to me “come look.” Laying on the kitchen table is a Penn State sweatshirt, T-shirt, and an envelope. I asked her whats this for? She says open the envelope. Inside are two tickets for PennState vs. Indiana in Happy Valley. You cant imagine how excited I was, this would be my first Penn State game Ive attended ever. I know in other posts Ive said Ive been a fan since 1982, but growing up, my parents never really did the going to sporting events thing and this was really only my first opportunity to do something like this, so I know this pales in comparison to what some of you have had the opportunity to do, Anyway, a few weeks later my wife informed me she was pregnant with our son. We headed down to State College for the Indiana game. When we arrived Saturday morning at the stadium, we walked around a bit, she took my picture with Joe’s Statue, and we checked out the myriad tables of souveniers. We stumbled across a teeny tiny Penn State sweatshirt. Of course we bought it, it was the first article of clothing we ever bought for Joshua…
now Im looking at this picture in the baby book, and guess what he is wearing in it.
Joe, no matter happens, I want you to know that my son will know everything about you. Everything that you have done for the betterment of others, unselfishly, and never asking for anything in return. Joshua will know your story, and I only hope he can hold you with same amount of esteem that I have since I was his age. And once Im done telling him your story, I will end it by telling him about the greatest college football coach of all time.
May God Bless Joe Paterno and the Paterno Family
And it would only be fitting to end with, even though my only ties to Penn State are Joe Paterno, the man and football coach and Penn State Football, forgive me the liberty of….
WE ARE………………………………
BRJ75 - January 21, 2012

PENN STATE!
I really got to dust this apartment. It is getting really bad.
Nittany_Ryan - January 21, 2012
forget the like button, this deserves a personal like statement
It’s so similar to our experience – we happened to find out that we were expecting while in PA, stopped in SC and got a baby blanket that said “My first Penn State blanket” and used it to tell my parent’s that we were expecting. And about 9 months later, Clayton was born, and his middle name is Joseph. He’s 10, and was still crying and praying at bedtime…I don’t know how much my 5 year old will remember about Joe, but he will get the stories, just like your Joshua will.
May God bless Joe and the Paterno family, and all of us fans as we continue to process all of this…

What's really sick is there are a lot of people who are positvely giddy about this right now.
And I’m not talking about “scandal people”. I’m talking about pre-scandal people who absolutely hated Joe so much they wished death on him. Honestly, I’ve had many Pitt fans flat out say to me “I can’t wait until Paterno dies…hopefully during a game.”
Sick, sick, sick people. That is one of the main reasons I hate Pitt football.
J Breezy - January 21, 2012
Don't apologize for hating Pitt football.
It’s healthy to let it out!!
I hope people remember, when it’s their turn to die, some of the things they said about Joe. Maybe they’ll regret running their mouths then . . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
It's really funny.
For all of the academic standards and oversigning jokes we make, take a look at this thread. Now tell me who loves, respects, and appreciates intercollegiate athletics? The fans of Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia et al? Or Pitt fans like those? (Has one Pitt fan said anything?) I’m really glad we got the chance to play Bama twice, and Florida in a bowl game recently. Meeting the real fans totally changed my perspective.

Actually, way back when the shit hit, my good buddy, a big Pitt fan, even called me and said he thought something was wrong the way things went down and that Joe was railroaded. So, while I hate Pitt, doesn’t mean I don’t respect some of the things they have accomplished there. Go Cardinals!
PaJoe - January 21, 2012
I only hate Pitt football
and the Pansy fans who think “12 – 0” redeems the whole series for them.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
For some reason, I always figured he’d die during a game. Seemed kind of fitting.
1LisHell - January 21, 2012
Really. All you can say is "Fuck those people."
Nobody takes their sports as seriously as I do. NO ONE! But even still, no matter who it is (Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Jim Tressel, Lloyd Carr) once they leave the field of play and are no longer a threat to beating my teams I do not wish them or their families any harm or ill will. People who do that are subhuman who deserve a sharp metal object jammed in their temples.

Sure, God had Joe down.
But he did not expect Joe to call an inside handoff to Aaron Harris.

And for journalism. Someone is actually taking responsibility for their actions. The MSM could learn a thing or two from them.
I do feel bad though, because I think he truly thought his information was accurate.
ppfcpp - January 21, 2012
That's what I think too
If he had multiple sources he trusted telling him the same thing, he should have reported it. He was wrong and I don’t think I’ve ever been happier to hear it. He’s a known factor around here, he loves Penn State and Joe just as much as the rest of us and wasn’t looking for fame at his expense when he made the report, he thought he had something that people needed to hear. He showed his true colors, that he’s a good person, with his repeated apologies and (unnecessary) resignation.

We are all Penn Staters and that means family.
It’s bigger than wins and losses, losing recruits or gaining recruits. Its what Joe Paterno has taught us all.
PSU_Brian - January 21, 2012
That is something
That people outside of our community just can’t understand. When we say we are a family, we actually mean it. Penn State means so much to us, no matter what happens.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
This
Nittany_Ryan - January 21, 2012

Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Exactly
And it is so hard to try and explain it to people.

It’s just that we have wildly different definitions of “it”.

PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012

but man, wouldnt be nice if those outside, all the detractors in the media, the a-holes commenting on stories would just stop and look.
Look at the students at Joe’s Statue tonight, look at all of us here on BSD tonight and I assume on other Penn State message boards, look at pretty much Penn Staters everywhere.
Just stop and look at us, I cant speak for everyone here of course, but for a good majority of us, we arent here because Joe was a football coach, we are here because we might be losing a very good human being, that has meant so, So much more than just Xs and Os and Wins and Losses.
I just “they” would stop and realize it.

Time to post "JoePa Facts"
Fact: JoePa was such a bad ass as a player; he once was penalized for horse collar tackling a pterodactyl.
Fact: JoePa once taught an octopus how to play linebacker.
Fact: During a head to head hit, JoePa cracked the skull of a Triceratops…JoePa wasn’t wearing a helmet.
Fact: While roaming Pangaea, JoePa challenged a Merychippus to a foot race and won.
Fact: JoePa has only burped once. It is commonly referred to as the Big Bang.
Fact: JoePa frequently won wrestling matches with saber-tooth tigers.
Fact: JoePa made footballs from the skin of T. Rex.
Fact: Bored on Antarctica, JoePa completed the world’s first cold fusion reaction when he slammed his two fists together.
Fact: When mapping the fjords of Greenland during the 16th century, JoePa made the first field goal posts from the tusks of Narwhals.
Fact: JoePa won every event in the first ancient Olympic Games.
Fact: Angered over his mother’s indiscretion, JoePa ate every snake in the Garden of Eden. God rewarded Joe with the creation of football.
Fact: It was not a meteoroid that killed the dinosaurs, rather the aftershock of a JoePa touchdown spike.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Solid gold,
except for the slight on JoePa’s mother!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Ahh, nice try. But pretty unbelievable
Except, I think he really did teach an Octopus to play linebacker.
PaJoe - January 21, 2012
They are really smart!!
And he is a good teacher
Nittany_Ryan - January 21, 2012
It was believable
until the touchdown spike.
Seriously. We are Penn State.
SarcasmJam - January 21, 2012
That's why he tells his players not to celebrate.
mvrck - January 21, 2012
BS
Joe would not spike the ball
psupride - January 21, 2012 via mobile
God ran right with Joe's last breath. God shouldn't have run right.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
So many have posted such wonderful things about Joe on here.
I feel the same as many of you, but I’m not sure I can eloquently put those many thoughts into words. So I’ll just rec what others say.
On another note, I would like to give a shout out to the fans from other teams who have come here to offer their support and condolences. Words cannot describe how much acts like these mean in times like tonight. Thank you so much. I know many of us will never forget your kindness tonight.
I love you, Joe. I always will, and you will live forever through us, our children, our children’s children, and future generations. You are, as we are, Penn State.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Very well said
VVeRPennState - January 21, 2012
So I wrote a fanpost a little while ago...
I just want to apologize to Joe, to the Paterno family, and BSD for my fanpost earlier. I still mean every word that I wrote, but I wrote it under the false pretense that Joe had passed. Of course the Old Man proved all of us wrong again! God bless him for that and keep fighting, Joe. We all love you, Joe and hope to have you with us for a long, long time.
Secondly, thanks BSD community for being here during what has become an extremely difficult and roller coaster night. We Are!!!!
wek5000lion09 - January 21, 2012
Penn State
I know what you mean by rollercoaster, been up and down for me as well. Other friends keep checkin in with me to see if I am okay, since they know I am such a hige Penn Stater
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
WEK, I don't think
an apology is necessary. (A) For those of us not in Happy Valley, we have to rely on other sources to give good info — not our fault if they shit the bed. (B) Your eulogy was outstanding and heartfelt — just a little early.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Thanks, 84, I really appreciate that
Maybe I feel guilty because my girlfriend (also a PSU grad) told me throughout every report that "Joe is still alive, I need Sue to tell me he is gone for me to believe it! I can tell you, I have never said more emphatically, “Honey, you’re right.”
wek5000lion09 - January 21, 2012
Heck, I tell my wife of 32 years
“Honey, you’re right!” every other sentence . . . One can’t be too careful, ya know.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Well said
That is rec worthy, sir!
wek5000lion09 - January 21, 2012
Had to say that.
She was on BSD earlier tonight. Might still be here . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Who is Mrs. Comfort?
I have to meet her!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Just asked her to check in.
Might take her awhile to find this part of the thread.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Hi Page2PSU,
Lovely to reply! I’ve been reading (& listening) for quite a while. Just got my on signon last week. You are #1PSUdiva!!!
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 21, 2012
I don't know about that!
But I have taught your hubby everything he knows about BSD! Would love to have dinner with y’all next time I’m in Raleigh.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Look forward to that.
Just e-mail me, and we’ll set it up!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Probably be in July.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Very good!
Our fiscal year closes 30 June — July is busy for me — but we will get together!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Dinner, It's a date.
Thanks Page.
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
Had to say .... (maybe since
It is Saturday night !!!
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 21, 2012
Mrs. Comfort,
I presume?
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Yes!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
You found us, sweetie!
ILY!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Found, then lost ...
so many posts keep popping up and my screen goes to neverland ;(
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
P.S. As a RCC, I need to say this for my own sake.
God, I merely am using humor in a time of grief, sadness, and fright. Do not confuse this, or me, with being a heathen. I know you can strike me down in an instant. Mr. Cash told me so.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
RCC?
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Roman Catholic Christian.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
Even sober I don't think I would have figured that one out.
CvilleLion - January 21, 2012
AH, yes, gotcha.
Not sure how I missed that.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Ah, thanks
I was thinking Royal Crown cola.
Jitterbug - January 21, 2012
Thanks . . .
Now I feel like I should get a Novena going.
SubLime - January 21, 2012
I have jumper cables if you need them.
Those old Chevys can be tough to get started.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Was just talking with my brother
Who graduated from PSU, and we were saying that we can see JoePa treating all the nurses and doctors like he was still coaching, like:
“ahh, you know we are goign to try some things here and see if we can be a good nursing team”
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
HAHAH, I love it.
To risk going too far:
This cancer and infection has a good team. If our nurses and doctors aren’t careful this will kick our teeth in. We gotta see how the nurses and doctors respond to some adversity, find out how they respond.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Well I think if we don't do something right
We might get licked.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
I understand where you're going with this.
I’m like Chandler on Friends: Inappropriate humor is how I deal with stress.
Thank God those close to me understand that.
Ab4PSU - January 21, 2012
So hold on for a second, let me get this straight
Devon, the guy who wrote a fanpost about being glad Harry Kalas died because he (Devon) was a mets fan, the same guy who got banned from BSD for some similarly insensitive and stupid comments about a PSU basketball player, that guy is the managing editor for Onward State, and that guy just resigned after falsely reporting that Joe had died? Is that really the same guy?
millzners - January 21, 2012
I hope somebody can tell me this isn't the case.
But I think it is.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
wait wait wait, Devon was the managing editor for Onward State
mjs2103 - January 21, 2012
It's him.
Confirmed by Chris above.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
So CBS ran with a story...
…confirmed by a guy that got banned on BSD. That’s fucking hysterical.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
Best part?
CBS didn’t credit Devon/OnwardState when they ran it citing “sources”. When it blew up? Point finger at OnwardState.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
of course not
because they’re too important to quote a student-run blog, and too important to take the fall for an error. doucheas.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
That's absolutely disgusting
TheWrathofQBEagles - January 21, 2012
That's absolutely media
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 21, 2012
Rec!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Wow
I wasn’t around here for that.
Onward State seems like a concept but a number of things I’ve read there are really asinine.
reedjohnmiller - January 21, 2012 via mobile
Devon has grown up quite a bit since then.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Clearly.
But it’s still pretty funny. In a night where I’m looking for humor under the couch cushions.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
How about just some OT news?
Sukay was defensive MVP in the East/West game.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Did you see his INT?
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
I am so upset I missed this, though I had friends let me know right away
what does this do for possible draft stock? I thought I heard he prob wasn’t gonna be drafted.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
He's a 7th rounder at best still most likely
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 21, 2012
Just the replay.
Dude has been a ball hawk for two years now, not surprised.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
I was watching the game,
while also on twitter. Caught it live. He was all over the field the whole game!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Really?
Hell yeah!
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 21, 2012
Very nice!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
He has, indeed.
Chris Grovich - January 21, 2012
Yeah,
He was and is a young guy. Give him an even break.
SubLime - January 21, 2012
Even guys who were in Joe's doghouse could work their way out.
So yeah, Devon too.
CvilleLion - January 21, 2012
Joe Paterno
My life was better for having known you Joe. That is all I can say.
mogstaar - January 21, 2012
This whole fucking thing
is just surreal.
06Lion - January 21, 2012
i was at the statue for the whole thing since around 8
the emotion was nothing like Ive ever experienced in my 22 years. Just a emotional night
tlrpsu - January 21, 2012
Thanks for sharing with us, tirpsu.
Would like to see pics if any are available. What a beautiful tribute to an amazing man!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
i have one from where i was but its not good quality
tlrpsu - January 21, 2012
I understand the candles by joe's feet
but every pic i see like this makes me think people are trying to set him on fire like some sort of sacrifice
Lion Eyes - January 21, 2012
lol.
my phone sucks really bad. I should have taken more. fuck it its all i got.
tlrpsu - January 21, 2012
It's pretty damn amazing as it is.
dwf5095 - January 21, 2012
No it's great
Just commenting on every photos I’ve seen posted by the statue
Lion Eyes - January 21, 2012
lol Ithought the same thing.
I know what the purpose is, but some of the photos look really bad.
ppfcpp - January 21, 2012
Joe's walking through fire
to impress the non-believers.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Takes a lot to make bronze burn.
be4time - January 21, 2012
Good to see, thanks!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Can't decide if I'm going staying in because I'm so sad
or going out because I’m so relieved. I can either cry in my pillow or cry on some poor confused guy’s shoulder.
dwf5095 - January 21, 2012
Go out
and wear your PSU proud!!!
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
Well, as long as it's a cute guy :o)
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Honestly,
the comedic value of the situation might be worth digging out my skinny jeans and finding a pair of heels.
dwf5095 - January 21, 2012
Honey,
those should always be on hand at your age!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
I think they're in my duffle bag?
I suck at being a college aged female.
dwf5095 - January 21, 2012
Weird
I was going to say the exact same thing.
skarocksoi - January 21, 2012
I'm sure that'll impress tat girl.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
judging from some of the other people at the bar
it just might.
skarocksoi - January 21, 2012
tat girl?
Is she the one that made Pryor commit to OSU?
ppfcpp - January 21, 2012

USA scores in the 98th minute to beat Venezuela
mjs2103 - January 21, 2012
WOOOOOOOOOO USA USA USA
mjs2103 - January 21, 2012
the Penn Stater on the women's US team
just tore her ACL & something else (MCL? Meniscus?) and will likely have to sit out the olympics :(
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Ali Krieger
Worse, the injury was against the DR. USA won like 15-0. If FIFA made sense, that game would never happen.
reedjohnmiller - January 21, 2012 via mobile
so unfortunate for her :(
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Just got back, and I've been reading the internet for the past 15 minutes
Yeah….. I dunno, I don’t know what to say
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 21, 2012
Guys, I'm heading out
I’ve only been around here for a few months, but I can’t thank you all enough for being a great community. God bless. Let’s hope tomorrow morning brings good news.
WE ARE…!
Nittany_Ryan - January 21, 2012
PENN STATE!
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
PENN STATE!!!
Ab4PSU - January 21, 2012
Night, Ryan!
Catch up with ya later!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Penn State!
Hopefully tomorrow morning we can all laugh about the time we thought Death had the balls to come after Joe Paterno.
ppfcpp - January 21, 2012
View from the Booth - January 21, 2012
one of my favorite photos :)
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Honestly,
I would pay $10,000 for a pair of those. No joke.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Typical white-shoe lawyer.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
You forgot soulless
As admitted in the music thread!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Hey,
somebody’s got to make the tough calls. Tell the seniors their healthcare is getting cut. Reduce their pensions. If someone has to do it, I might as well get paid to be that person.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Nono.
Black shoe lawyer! That’s the whole point.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
You'd have to
Nike made especially for him. Five pairs at a time.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
Yeah,
went out of actual production in, what, 1980?
If it were reebok I think I could get it done, but Nike is going to be tough.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
honestly, it would be such a money maker for Nike I can see business sense in restocking now.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Give it a year or so . . .
So’s not to look callously opportunistic, and this would absolutely be an item on which Nike could put the retro push.
And I would damn well buy — five pairs, size 11.
SubLime - January 21, 2012
No, not that late.
It’s that they are non-cleated versions of cleats. He always just used to wear whatever the guys were wearing, but than even black Nikes (at least the versions that the guys are wearing now) got to be a little much. Probably in the early to mid 1990’s.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
Ah, I thought what he wore was taken out
of production with the invention of the turf shoe for some reason. Don’t recall why I thought that.
Does he auction his off or anything? Charity auctions?
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Oh, the shoes he wears now?
[Yeah, present tense bitch]
Out of production for years. He auctioned a pair off a few years ago, for like 10 grand.
You’re the guy who bought the Cortezs though right?
jesse. - January 21, 2012
Yes sir.
Wear them every Friday on game weeks, Federal court appearance? Oh well, risking it (has only come up once, and it was snowing, so it wasn’t all that ballsy).
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
They still sell cleats that are dead on balls.
The flap over the laces is the key. Although if you’re really a stickler (and I totally am) they aren’t the same. Getting them in just sneakers is the trick.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
Yup.
I have some clients that are large sports organizations that have big Reebok contracts. So I get to negotiate with the Reebok execs here and there. Maybe I can convince them when those expire to get bids and negotiate with Nike. It would be a good time to see if I can get an exact pair.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
I spent a long time looking for "Paternos"
My reffing cleats are closer, but those Cortezs are the best sneakers I’ve ever found. And it took me months. I have two pairs. I breaking out the new ones for Court on Tuesday.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
Are the new ones also the '06s?
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Don't the shoes show up
as a marker that gets some players into situations in the Denlinger book? I read it quite a ways back — but I’m largely sure that I remember some jealously of the shoes as a sort of status token.
SubLime - January 21, 2012
Still the best background ever
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 21, 2012
this is my favorite game from the student section.
hands down. ill never forget his speech.
tlrpsu - January 21, 2012
That speech was seriously kick ass
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 21, 2012
I was in the Studnet section for the '02 OSU game
When Joepa beat the Bear’s record. Loudest thing I ever heard in my life. Can still hear that stadium jumping when we won.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
me too!!
cept I can’t remember too much. That’s the alcohol for ya.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Sorry, 01
Still have the ticket!
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
I was there wearing my 324 shirt!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
I was in the senior section
Can’t remember what I was wearing.
Clothes I presume.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
I have this awesome shirt,
On the front it says, “Dear Mr. Bryant,” on the back it says, “Sorry Bear, it’s 324 time in Happy Valley. Fall 2001”
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Nice
I bet you looked real hot in that shirt!!
Okay, been drinking for awhile since I heard about all of this tonight.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
I did! LOL!
I still wear it occasionally, although not so much since I moved to Alabama in 2004.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Pictures?
Seriously, sorry for any and all comments from here on out form me, Stoli 100 proof might make me go “funny”
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
I would have to look in some boxes
in the attic for pictures. I don’t like pictures of myself.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
I know exactly what you mean
I think I look awful in every picture of me.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
I know I do!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
disagree
you’re too hard on yourself.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
I likely was very close to you.
Well, by stadium standards. I had tickets in the middle upper senior section.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
What sticks out the most, besides the game, is after, during preparation
for the celebration, they played the theme from Backdraft.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
I had junior tickets
we’re all awesome.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
I was somewhere in the senior section
(since I was a 4th year PhD student), but don’t remember where. I have the ticket in a box somewhere.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
ML,
I was very close to you.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Unrequited love is a hell of a thing.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
When Mills
turned the corner on that 69 yard run, were we holding hands?
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
It's just like you to forget the kiss.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
thanks for the humor tonight ML
it’s MUCH appreciated!
Cari Greene - January 22, 2012
Life sucks.
May as well laugh at it as often as possible.
MainLion - January 22, 2012
You know, I remember turning to a guy 2 minutes before half time and joking about how it didn't look like things would work out for Joe.
And he showed me up. Tonight is like deja vu all over again.
dwf5095 - January 21, 2012
Amazing how an old guy
keeps it fresh, isn’t it?
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Peace and well wishes to the Paterno family and all Penn State fans

I am really tired of people using moral outrage...
as an excuse to act immorally.
I don’t really believe in heaven or God, I believe we each have one chance on this Earth and that living a legacy that people will never forget is our one shot at immortality.
I hope that one day I will leave even half the legacy that Joe will when he takes his last breath. And take comfort in the high likelihood that the bottom feeders trying to tear him down, even now, will remain as obscure as the screen names they hide behind. Obviously, their mothers and fathers did not love them enough and they were never lucky enough to have a man or woman that was anything like Joe Paterno in their lives.
BNittsDeMilo - January 21, 2012
No words
Just sadness
KC_HAWKEYE - January 21, 2012
Thanks, Hawkeye!
Some others in your clan have checked in — we appreciate the support!!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
I for one will be wearing PSU gear for the next few days
In honor of JoePa and what he meant for all of us. Anyone care to join me? Might even do a white out tomorrow for Coach.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
3/4 of my shit is PSU.....

tlrpsu - January 21, 2012
Same
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 21, 2012
definitely tomorrow
can’t really on monday with work dress code…but I’ll try to work in something. maybe just blue and white.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Wear it under your dress shirts
Have done that before.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
no dress shirts
different code for women, if I was a guy I’d surely be sporting a penn state tie.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Didn't know you were a Hottie
My apologies my dear lady.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
man, just when I thought I was becoming known around here!
LOL
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
It is really hard
To tell who is a dude and who is a Hottie.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
Look for who is using the period key --
those are the Divas.
/Give no credit to me for that one
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
So wait,
I can’t be a dude and a hottie? I resent that.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
Oh I know you a Sexy bitch!!!
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
Well, if you had a soul
then you might be a hottie.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Too bad for me then, I guess.
PSUinBOSSton - January 21, 2012
aw, in my heart you are, boss!
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Yeah, with 1,100 comments.jesse. - January 21, 2012
You're in DC aren't you?
It’s cold now, wear a jacket.I’m in that area, and I make it a point to wear a PSU jacket / sweatshirt to work every day. Not in the dress code, but as long as I take it off when I get there it;s ok. And then I get to hang it by my desk for everyone to see all day.
ppfcpp - January 21, 2012
yep
good call! It’s not as warm as my winter coat but it should do
I also have my ESPN college gameday penn state knit cap I got when gameday was there for the 2005 OSU game. Love that hat.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
It's a little harder for the Divas!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
exactly
I’m sure I’ll come up with something though. At the least I have my sterling silver Penn State football pendant to wear.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
I'm a teacher.
I’ll be wearing a PSU t-shirt under a cardigan, jeans, and flats.
kmblue - January 21, 2012
blue and white is acceptable.

I've been wearing PSU gear every day since November
Just like I did before that. I refused to change that based on the actions of a few certain people, and I won’t change now.

I wear my PSU proud and loud
And basically dare people to say anything to me about it.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
Same here.

Same with the stuff on my cars.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
My license plate is literally
PENST8R.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
mine is
NTN3LN….that should be a thread topic sometime
va2pennstate - January 21, 2012
That's a fail for me.
Mine is “SF 11C2S” — my military service predates my Penn State matriculation.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
My father, RIP,
combined the two with “USNNPSU”
PSUGuru - January 21, 2012
Would join you
in the whiteout, but I’ll be wearing my blue PSU polo to church tomorrow to pray for the Paterno family, maybe after! And I have already decided I’ll be wearing my relatively new “Thank You Joe” t shirt I got for Christmas, great thing about being a PE teacher to get away with t shirts occasionally….especially for this
va2pennstate - January 21, 2012
Yeah I might need to start class
With a lecture on the greatness that is Joseph Vincent Paterno
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
I may tell
my first graders to believe that deep down they are destined to do great things….then we will jump rope
va2pennstate - January 21, 2012
May I suggest
“obligated” to do great things. Inspiring young minds begins with imparting a sense of obligation and commitment…wonder where THAT concept came from! My daughter (PSU 07) does this daily with her first grade class, and she’s been proud of what they’ve accomplished together three years running.

Words escape me.
My best to JoePa, his family, and all of you at Penn State.

Thanks, Tez!
If you can read through this entire thread, you can see the full spectrum of human emotion. It is all here tonight . .. .

Joe...one of the greats in college football.
Love and prayers from a Cornhusker.
And is Sue one of the greatest wives ever? When all of that crap was going on, with all of the media swarming the Paterno house, I saw such passion and affection between Joe and Sue, and such strength from Sue. When you give Joe his well-deserved Kudos, please include this amazing women.
redvalley - January 21, 2012
Thanks, RedValley!
The support from other areas/teams’ fans has been amazing — we appreciate it!!

Thanks redvalley
Appreciate the love from Husker nation.

Another Hawkeye fan stopping by,
and I want to say that this may be a blessing for Joe. Everything I say from here on is meant respectfully, not critically. I thought he got a raw deal by being fired, but I also think it is possible that he could have done more about Sandusky. If he does pass soon, he (and, I hope, his family) will be spared a massive legal headache in the next few months or years. And, with lung cancer, I’d guess that Joe will also be spared some physical pain (and his family some emotional pain) if he passes soon instead of after a long, drawn-out fight with cancer.
I’ve always admired Joe and the PSU football program. My junior high football team had the same uniforms (the only difference being that we didn’t have numbers on the shoulders of our jerseys). I have a relative that looks a lot like JoePa did about 20 years ago (that relative has been asked for “your autograph, coach” by mistake). So, even when PSU was beating the piss out of Iowa in the 90s, it was tough to hate PSU. On a side note, I have absolutely no problem hating Ohio State.
So, to all you PSU fans, please don’t be too sad for too long. Joe is a legend, and you’ll always have the memories he helped to provide. Hawkeye fans will be dealing with something slightly similar when Hayden Fry or Dan Gable passes. Oh, who am I kidding, Dan Gable will never die.
Speaking of wrestling, good luck for tomorrow’s dual (Iowa vs PSU, I think it will be on Big Ten Network at 9 pm ET on Sunday).
Best wishes and prayers to everyone, and particularly Coach Paterno and his family/friends/players.
WaterlooChazz - January 21, 2012
Thanks, Chazz.
Come back later so we can show you the light. Joe did a ton — it’s not all in the public domain yet.

Sorry, looks as if your wrestlers and women's BBall met their waterloo in Happy Valley today.
Didn’t see the wresters but your gals are scrappy. Glad Wahlin will be graduating and we don’t have to meet them again this year at your stomping grounds.
Thanks for stopping by.
