With the previous thread bound for over 900 comments, here's another for you to keep each other company overnight. It's been a strange, sad night in many ways, for many people. Let's continue to focus on thinking good thoughts for Joe Paterno and his family. Remember that he's more than a football coach -- he's a husband, father, and grandfather to people who are bravely going through this with him.

Good call.
I’m a stinking mess and appreciae the forum.
SarcasmJam - January 21, 2012
:(
we’re all a bit of a mess tonight.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
+1
I’m just thankful I have a place to talk about everything. God knows I’d be a mess if I didn’t have this site.
ppfcpp - January 21, 2012
I was a mess about a few hours ago
But with my good friend here at BSD and my good friend Stolichnaya, I am getting through this night.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
Think about the folks who went to bed...
… sobbing. And won’t know until morning he is not dead. I almost went to be myself.
jessedotsmom - January 21, 2012
Very difficult night
Thanks Chris, you’ve done a good job with an impossible situation.
James - January 21, 2012
Wow
are we the only two that moved over?
Deaver78 - January 21, 2012
I closed comments on the other thread, so the others should be here soon.
Chris Grovich - January 21, 2012
I am not ready for this
unreal
amandakt - January 21, 2012 via Android app
Is it wrong that I'm starting to feel almost happy?
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
I'm feeling kinda the same way
relief that the news wasn’t real. Though I know it most likely will be soon.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Yes, and quite a bit of beer, too.
I’m surprised I can be anything other than a puddle of tears right now.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
It's always a mixed bag.
Sadness when we lose someone so very important to us all, while celebrating a remarkable life at the same time.
CvilleLion - January 21, 2012
It's not just that,
the rest of my life is pretty much shit right now, too! YAY!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Paige.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
We love you and you are awesome.
Never forget that.
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Thanks!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
You need to do whatever voodoo shit you diva's do
And appoint Mel a diva.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
DONE!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
In my mind a bra got burned or something.
jesse. - January 22, 2012
No,
I waved my magic wand. I can’t afford to burn bras. I need them too much.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
had to rec this
what spell did you use?
Cari Greene - January 22, 2012
I'll email it to you.
Don’t want the dudes to know.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
awesome
as long as it’s in the original latin form
Cari Greene - January 22, 2012
Kali-ma....
KALI-MA!
jesse. - January 22, 2012
Worst Indiana Jones movie.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I KNEW you would say that
not my favorite, definitely the scariest. But I liked it. I like Kate Capshaw and Shorty.
Cari Greene - January 22, 2012
What makes it scary are
the skulls of Moe, Larry, and Curly in the background.
Bad ending for the stooges.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I'm mining 1980 -1984 tonite.
Deal with it. Did somebody say Phoebe Cates?
jesse. - January 22, 2012
Sydney Penny.
She was cute in “Pale Rider”; now? Ooo-la-la.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
girl
you crazy
skarocksoi - January 22, 2012
Didn't we have this conversation already?
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
yes
it ended with me being right and you being wrong.
skarocksoi - January 22, 2012
Don't think so.
All a matter of opinion. You know what they say about those…
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
mine are usually correct?
skarocksoi - January 22, 2012
Um...no.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Don't go all anal on him!
Pete the Streak - January 22, 2012
man I watch wayyy to many kids movies...
I thought that was one of the scooby doo live action movies…
jaytay13 - January 22, 2012
Really?
Would those be that graphic?
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
well...
In the first live action one a guy that looks just like that steals the soul of teenagers on spring break replacing them with monsters…
so ummm yes and no?
jaytay13 - January 22, 2012
man, and you really did just email me too!
Cari Greene - January 22, 2012
I didn't include the spell, though.
Next email.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
wasn't she already a member of the diva sorority?
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
Sorry, Paige.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
You rock, Paige.
mfounds67 - January 21, 2012
I am with you
Know exactly what you mean, Life is professional life is shit, personally life is shit, atleast I have Nittany Nation to keep me going each day I wake up.
AriesGD - January 21, 2012
Ah, the glories of academia!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I was told that it is a noble way to starve.
I only have myself to blame.
SubLime - January 22, 2012
I go up for tenure this year.
And I really need another grant or a fellowship. Just found out last week I didn’t make the finals for the fellowship I applied to.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
We do things in a way that is an insult to our values.
Service, Research, Teaching. But the focus is on research, the others really don’t matter — at least they don’t at a Carnegie I school. Which mostly results in a lot of bad research. Got to get published. I’ll do anything to get published. Swell.
SubLime - January 22, 2012
I've got five articles in the hopper.
Three are finished, but having trouble publishing. I did an evaluation project with a hand tied behind my back. Regretting that now.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
And I am at a community college
In PA, where that Fucker Corbett cut out budget. Just for off suplemental unemployment, still living with mom and dad. Depression aint got shit on me!!
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
History, right?
Try looking at other states for jobs if you can.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
History and Geography
I am actually looking at a career change. Just applied to PSU for a MA in higher ed, to be a counselor/advisor or administrator.
Kids are getting told such shit these days, I am straightforward to the point of blunt about what to do with their future, and my students love it when I don’t sugar coat anything.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Teacher job market in North Carolina seems
to be crap, but I can poke around down here if you need a change of venue.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I need a change of life
Like not even joking.
I acually loved living in NC, but my dream job is working in Happy Valley. Applied to about 60 jobs there, and was called for 1. But still pluggin through it all.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
No worries, Aries.
My e-mail is in my profile. I know you were at UNCG, so have some experience down here.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Really NC is a great state
Loved my time there. So different from PA
My e-mail is in my profile also.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Let me know what,
if anything, I can do for you. I’m in health administration, though, so may not be of much help.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I can use some
Healthcare. Had a bad heath scare a few years ago, long story short, almost had a stroke. Blood pressure was littearlly double the normal rate. Doctors were still clueless as to why it happened, killed off half my kidneys. Seems it might have all been because have sleep apniea, didn’t sleep for like 6 months.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Well, I'm not a medical doctor.
But I can tell you all about insurance and stuff. But seriously, I’d be happy to try to get you in touch with specialists if I know any. Just email me.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I got all that figured out...
Pretty much. I was about 4 years ago, so been on top of it. Great story, but way to long to relive here.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
I'm glad you're well now!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Me to!!!
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
I'll add my gratitude!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
All too kind
And you haven’t even meet me in person. Might change your mind if that happens…i kied I keid.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Naw,
you’re a Penn Stater. That’s all we need to know!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
"way too long to relive here"
um….this is the internet/BSD here, you know that, right?
The JuggerNitt - January 22, 2012
I'll shoot you a note manana.
I’m about to switch venues myself. My book is calling . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I am hoping start my MA for same thing
I have been doing Academic Advising for 3yrs at a for profit. I dream of working for a non-profit. Not that the pay will be any better.
amandakt - January 22, 2012 via Android app
Make sure your non-profit of choice has a good
business officer. I’ve worked for a couple that were almost bankrupt because my predecessor couldn’t handle the books.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
i meant nonprofit school.
amandakt - January 22, 2012 via Android app
Worked at a pre -> 8th grade
school, which was okay while it lasted. Now at Duke – I guess that counts, right?
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
yep
there are some plus sides to forprofit education but overall it is a soul sucking demon (new dept i work for excluded)
amandakt - January 22, 2012 via Android app
I prefer the for-profit world.
Duke people think that money is evil, but are quick to demand more in their departments — and paychecks.
See “leeching” comments elsewhere in this thread.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Employees it may be better for
and forprofits are great at quick changes. however profit is bottom dollar. the things i have witnessed, told to do, all in the name of getting/keeping a student is morally repugnant.
amandakt - January 22, 2012 via Android app
Sorry to hear that.
Wish I had some words of wisdom and comfort.
CvilleLion - January 21, 2012
Thanks, that's good enough.
No more sadsack shit, I promise.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Did someone ask for "Comfort"?
I’m still here! (Prolly for just a few more minutes, tho.)
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I feel prepared.
Tonight I released my emotions. If bad news follows, I feel as though I’ll be prepared—but nevertheless unwilling to accept it.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
I haven't even come close
to shedding all my tears.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
same here
though I don’t think there is a limit when it comes to the death of beloved people.
The JuggerNitt - January 22, 2012
I was at a bar trying to do trivia when I started breaking down tonight
when I left is when word got out he was still with us. So I don’t think I’ve had my crying breakdown yet…but it’s coming, mark my words.
Cari Greene - January 22, 2012
its relief. I felt it since i learned he wasn't gone yet.
tlrpsu - January 21, 2012

kmblue - January 21, 2012
That is an amazing picture of the vigil.
Most certainly wallpaper material.
View from the Booth - January 21, 2012
Chris,
While I appreciate the new thread, do not close the old. We can move along like good lemmings.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
I'll open them back up.
Even a few minutes of closed comments should be encouragement enough, so I’ll open it back up for you to finish business over there.
Chris Grovich - January 21, 2012
Thanks dude.
MainLion - January 21, 2012
you do everything wrongjesse. - January 21, 2012

tlrpsu - January 21, 2012
Flush when you're done, MainLion,
and put the seat down. I’m tired of getting blamed for leaving it up, when it’s YOU doing it.
/LOLZ
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Huh?
MainLion - January 21, 2012
Chris said you had to finish your "business"
on the other thread. I just assumed . . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Ah, a poop joke.
You know, I expected more from you.
MainLion - January 22, 2012
Sorry, buddy.
Not the first person I’ve disappointed — won’t be the last.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Ah, my Saturday morning speech while a student at Penn State.
Memories.
MainLion - January 22, 2012
LOL!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Thanks Chris
Like I said before, we appreciate your work.
ppfcpp - January 21, 2012
Clearly you can see why it was important for me to get in one last post.
MainLion - January 22, 2012
As a Husker fan
my heart is aching for the Penn State family. God Bless all of you, and God be with Joe’s family.
The Big Ten family engulfs you with it’s support and care.
redvalley - January 21, 2012
Thank you, redvalley!
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Thanks again, RedValley!
Please stop by often. I for one like having Nebraska in the B1G.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
And I love the B1G.
But not the shared sadness we’re going through now. Joe is such an icon…irreplaceable.
redvalley - January 21, 2012
Easy aside...
As perfect as I’m ever going to get.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
I was in the Army when I was 18-22, and
had reason to believe I was a bad-ass. Those were some good years!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Thanks jesse
and PSU_Lions, but my sig has more to do with the criticism thrown at these imperfect young men by fans who have forgotten how imperfect they, themselves, were at that age.
Great coaches like Joe understand that premise, and support their players according to that innate flaw, rather than tearing them down.
redvalley - January 22, 2012
No worries, RV.
Your sig just brought some good memories.
And I go by “84” or “Mark” — easier to type.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Thanks.
Damn, I’m falling in love with Penn State….
MUST…LEAVE…NOW…
Long live volleyball! And rest well, my friends.
redvalley - January 22, 2012
You are welcome back
anytime, RV!
Good night and God bless!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
We can be your second love!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Oh,
but will it be returned?
Love never works on a one-way street. : D
redvalley - January 22, 2012
So true.

PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
You people
are too much fun.
And I feel guilty saying that on a night like this.
And, I’m going to repeat my admiration of Sue P. that I stated on the other thread. Am I misreading her, or is she one the neatest, most loving, supportive wives ever?
In these short, few months, I have been overwhelmed by her strength…and unconditional love for Joe.
redvalley - January 22, 2012
You are not misreading her
She is every bit as great a woman as Joe was a great man.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
She's the ultimate woman.
I wish I could be like her.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Ah!
A fellow woman on a sports site…I’m so excited, I’m going to spit now.
I’ve only identified two other women on Corn Nation. Are you as lonely here, or are there many more of our species on BSD?
redvalley - January 22, 2012
the BSDivas run this bitch
tlrpsu - January 22, 2012
So, So JEALOUS!
redvalley - January 22, 2012
im not a diva. i just know the ropes.
tlrpsu - January 22, 2012
No,
I was saying I’M jealous.
I feel the female POV adds to the richness of a site.
redvalley - January 22, 2012
agreed
tlrpsu - January 22, 2012
You can be an honorary
BSDiva. And yes, we do run this!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Oh,
you MUST visit Corn Nation…please!
redvalley - January 22, 2012
Definitely will!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
My wife is on here somewhere,
but is new. Has not yet attained Diva status, I’m thinking.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Of course she has.
As soon as we know someone is female, I wave my wand, and they automatically become a BSDiva.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Easy there!
“Waving wands” is part of the reason we are in a shit storm!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I knew someone would make a comment like that!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
My humble Thanks!
love to all BSD
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
true story
i still remember the day she waved her wand over me. sniff sniff. one of my happiest days ever
amandakt - January 22, 2012 via Android app
"she waved her wand over me"
Giggity.
06Lion - January 22, 2012
I actually can't take credit,
as the original BSDiva. A lot of wonderful ladies were here before I was. I’m just quick to include all ladies as divas!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
She underestimates the BSDiva effect.
They really do run this place.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
SuePa
Is the best woman that lives in State College. She seems liek the nicest lady and one of the most caring on top of it.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
With all respect to my wife
of 28 years, any woman who puts up with a man for as long as the Paterno’s have been married is truly a saint.
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
My parents hit 60 years
and my Dad died about two months later.
No cause-and-effect implied!!!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Mine made it to 46
when Mom passed. When I mention to my wife that we have nearly twenty years to go to match them, she collapses into a sobbing puddle of tears. I can’t figure out why…
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Wife and I have been married for 32 --
they have been 24 of the happiest years of my life.
/LOLZ
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I see what you did there 84
Nice!!
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Aries .. nice?
HE says 24 …. What does MRS. say? lol
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
I don't know
I assume the Miss’s says she ahs had the 32 best years of her life with 84.
But can only assume really.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Good answer, Aries,
since that was Mrs. 84 asking that question and that is EXACTLY what I tell her.
84 masquerading as ComfortHePuHuTh
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
I'm telling :o)
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
No need to assume ...
I’ll go on record (long story, shortened): It has truly been almost 34! Blessed Years since we met and He totally ‘swooned’ me! Mark, ILYMTYLTT!
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
My wife doesn't
like the joke where you say “We have been married for seven blissful years” " But I though you’ve been married for longer than that?" " We’ve been married for 28, but only seven have been blissful"
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Just say,
“Honey, you’re right!”
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
That is
an autoreply.
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Along with
“I’m sorry”
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
But she can be harder than woodpecker lips.
Did you see where she said about he-who-shall-not-be-named, "If he had touched one of my kids I would have . . . "
And she would tutor some of the football players to the point where they were glad to get back to the field!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I just want to hug her
She seems like the nicest person. Would love to meet her and bake with her and do thing I do with my grandma. Love me some SuePa.!!
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
I remember seeing her around
at various PSU fundraising and spirit events. When I was there (06-10) Our opinion of her was at least as high as it was of Joe, if not higher. She is, by all accounts, a great woman.

Deaver78 - January 21, 2012
prolly
Cari Greene - January 21, 2012
I'm not really sure.
The issue is that the threads come to a screeching halt somewhere in the 800-900 comment range. We’ve been over 1,000 on occasion.
Chris Grovich - January 21, 2012
Thanks
it was a question that just popped in my head
Deaver78 - January 21, 2012
Unless you using the WOPR
After 800 it’s tough, especially if there are gifs and shit.
I just had a WOPR joke. Needed to use it. Sorry.

How about a nice game of chess?

Does EDSBS have more bandwidth or something?
They regularly go over 1000 before jumping to another thread.
/Note, not criticizing, just asking.
Paige2PSU - January 21, 2012
Good question, no idea.
Chris Grovich - January 22, 2012
Are the individual sites responsible for their own hosting?
Or is it all through the SBN mothership?
mvrck - January 22, 2012
sorry chris
but I seemed to start something to keep you up
Deaver78 - January 22, 2012 via Android app
Oh, mothership.
Which I think actually is the WOPR.
Chris Grovich - January 22, 2012
Then if things get bad enough I would file a ticket with em or however you handle technical issues.
I’m sure they probably have EDSBS on it’s own dedicated machine given how much traffic it gets. Threads crashing after X comments is a processor/RAM issue on the server rather than bandwidth.
mvrck - January 22, 2012
I'm technically inept.
I just know that EDSBS doesn’t eject until over 1000 comments.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012

Is there a way to let the Paternos know
we tried to melt down the internet tonight?
They need frequent reminders of our love and prayers for them.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Jay knows.
jesse. - January 21, 2012
Very good.
I remember how many people said good things at my Dad’s funeral, and I resolved I would do my best to say good things to people while they are still alive. Not perfect at that, but I try.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
Oh man, this so much.
My grandmother passed away last summer. And at the wake I spent hours listening to people tell me how much she had touched their lives and helped them. I expected the whole ordeal to be terrible, but thanks to their words it was almost a positive experience. It meant so much to me to hear how much she had done for other people. Since then I’ve made it my goal in life to make sure that I let everyone in my life know that they helped to mold me.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Orson Scott Card.
Sci-fi writer who lives in Greensboro. Wrote the “Ender” books, and “Speaker for the Dead”. Have seriously considered having someone who doesn’t know me research my life, and give an objective portrayal of it at my funeral.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
He does a great job in the Rhino Times too.
mfounds67 - January 22, 2012
Yep.
I really need to go back and reread his stuff. I enjoy that genre.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Yup
He said that he saw all the comments (not necessarily here) and passed them onto Joe for inspiration. Something tells me they are aware of just how much this means to all of us.

I am 23 years old, been a State fan since I can remember.
And Joe has been there since the beginning of my fanhood. I love Penn State football and have JoePa largely to thank for giving me such an incredible, tradition rich program to be proud of for the rest of my life. To all my fellow State fans grieving tonight, stay strong. We can all be thankful knowing that Joe’s legacy will live forever.
View from the Booth - January 21, 2012
I'm 53, and
can say pretty much the same thing, View. That’s an amazing legacy Joe has put together.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 21, 2012
I share that
55 here, but Penn State spans generations, in no insignificant part due to the Paterno legacy. Not the wins, the lessons. I keep hearing Penn State Victory playing in my mind tonight, over and over. It’s what that victory is about that means the most.
PSUMarine78 - January 22, 2012
Damn, you're old!
j/k!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
Seriously. I'm right in between you guys at 54.
I don’t remember PSU before Joe. This is all a new reality. I don’t like it.
CvilleLion - January 22, 2012
Do you, or 78 or 84 (now, like you 84, I'm starting to sound like a Get Smart episode)
remember TV Quarterbacks? We got (then) WPSX in the early 70s in Venango County — the transmitter was on a mountain in Clearfield. Educational, commercial TV with an hour of Joe, I think Fran, and a small audience.
SubLime - January 22, 2012
Yeah, the only prob that I recall
was that it came on Sunday mornings, and unless I missed church (not a good idea) I would miss that program.
No Tivo/VCRs/any of that stuff back then, kids. Stop snickering!!!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
We got it on Wednesday night (live or replay I can't recall)
in ‘72, ’73, and I think ’74 — Tom Shuman was QB in ’74 I think and I remember this season of the show. He looked like he had a mouthpiece in when he didn’t have a mouthpiece in.
It was the greatest coach show ever. PBS style, no ads, no hype, no smoke approaching your ass.
SubLime - January 22, 2012

I wonder if the tapes are out there somewhere?
SubLime - January 22, 2012
They are, but

PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I don't either
Remember hearing a delayed re-cap of a PSU-WVU game while riding with the ‘old man’ in our ‘65 Plymouth station wagon on the AM radio in 1967 and the ’old man’ saying something along the lines of ‘that guy’s making a name for himself up there’.
In hindsight I’d say…no shit, dad.

God Bless You Coach Paterno
He has been my hero, my inspiration for over 45 years. This is a very sad day. My daughter turns 21 today. She calls him Grandpa Joe.
My wife and I had the great fortune to spend 30 minutes alone with Coach Paterno in his office in 2008. It is one of the best days of my life. We NEVER talked football; we talked about family and he proclaimed me “Father of the Year”, as having 6 daughters.
I love the man and all he has stood for.
It is so sad and I could never prepare properly for this time, although I knew it would come.
He will fight to the end as he is one tough man.

1999/2000ish. An older sibling, also a PSU alum, was a student in an engineering discipline. He tutored football players on the side, so he had access to Lasch. My folks and I came to visit, and he and one of the players, more of a “reserve” guy, showed us the study area (the carrells stick out), the half-moon video/big screen room, the weight room, and a couple other things. We stopped outside of the door to Joe’s office, but it was locked. Purely by coincidence, the cleaning person, an older gentleman, asked us if we wanted to see the inside. He had to empty the waste baskets. Of course we did. So, he opened the door. When we walked in, to the right was Joe’s desk, as often photographed, then in front of it (I think) a couch, then in front of that, a smaller conference table. Windows, and then to the left, down a small hall, was a kitchenette and I think a shower (he mentioned it), but we did not snoop that far. We wandered for five minutes at most, then left. No pictures, unfortunately, but we weren’t prepared.
Since all of this shit, I wondered whether the guy who let us in was the guy mentioned in certain reports/articles. I don’t recall his age specifically, but I also don’t recall him being terribly old.
MainLion - January 22, 2012
Thats Awesome
So cool you could get in and see it all in its glory.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
I was fortunate. My brother introduced me to some players
and also took me some pretty great places. E.g., I watched the 2002 Super Bowl at Bryan Scott’s apartment in Copper Beech. Not the North Atherton one, but the (then) other one. I think there are more now. My main memory was the stunningness of the gals there.
MainLion - January 22, 2012
Nice
Stunningness is a great word, might have to steal that. Such a shame that there are times where words are not in existence to describe the moment. That seems like one.
I meet Matt Millen a few times when I was a youth, went to school with one of his kids for a few years, well he was a grade behind me, but at a small catholic grade school. Seems real laid back and very approcahable. Closest I got to “meeting” a player.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
I've been in Les Miles' office.
They arrested me and cuffed me just as quick as they found me.
SubLime - January 22, 2012
How many grand juries did it take to indict you?
Sorry, don’t mean to sound bitter.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
I just want to be on record as the person who rec'd this.
leeharvey418 - January 22, 2012
I'm mostly a reader and don't comment very often
But I need to say that I love you guys. Joe is my lifelong hero. We all know the amazing things that he’s done… And I’d also like to say that I’m sorry. I’m sorry this all had to happen. He didn’t deserve it and neither did we. I love you, Joe Pa! I love you Penn State!
TheGunslinger - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Thanks, GunSlinger!
I fell in love with BSD and its people — it’s like an oasis of sanity in the midst of a mad, mad world.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
You should comment more often
This is a good group of people, and you seem like a person who would fit in.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Rest easy tonight, Joe.
You probably have no idea how many of us are thinking of you and saying a prayer tonight.
’night all.
CvilleLion - January 22, 2012
Tried to go drown my sorrows
And found out the party was shut down 10 minutes before I showed up.
Then I slipped in the ice and laughed hysterically while my worried friends watched.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Youre always welcome to drown your sorrows with us
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
I may take you up on that.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
I'm still young, and not all that far from State College
You would be most welcome to join me anytime!
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
If I do join you
I’m holding you personally responsible for making sure I don’t fall on my saw again.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
sorry, autocorrect.
“saw” should be “ass”. Though if you could also stop me from falling on saws I would be very grateful.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
lol I will take responsibility for making sure
That you do notend up on your ‘saw’ again. But seriously, I remember entire nights making sure my female friends didn’t fall on the way home from a party to their dorm / aparment. Where were your friends?
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
A few feet away, staring at me.
Maybe I need better friends.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
I remember a certain night
Running into a girl who was lost around Prospect Ave. My buddy and I spent 2 hours and a 15 dollar cab ride (a lot as an undergrad!) making sure she got back to her sorority floor ok. I won;t knock on your friends, because I don’t know the situation. All I can do is assure you that there are some guys out there who will help a girl out.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
That's incredibly, wonderfully sweet.
Seriously, on behalf of college girls everywhere, thank you.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Looking back, I guess it was
At the time I was more annoyed that it took that much effort to get her home. But I guess you could say JVP had an influence me, and i wanted to be a better man.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Joe Paterno.
Inspiring the protection of Penn State’s integrity and random sorority girls.
This is sad, but I don’t think I know any college guys who would go through that much trouble.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Well it was me and a good friend
So there werre are least two of us. I only graduated in 2010. I have some friends who are still in the area – I’d like to think they still have some morality.
Hopefully they will carry on the tradition of being respectful, but if not let me know and I’ll see if I can bust some skulls.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Baby!
LOL!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I'll definitely let you know if there are any skulls to busted.
And I’ve been told it isn’t fun to be kicked by my heels. So we can double-team the next guy to laugh at me when I slip.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
lol just let me know
I’ll be back in the area for Thon, and I think it’s just as fun (if not funnier) to make fun on guys who fall.
I’ll gladly team up on them with you.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
thon weekend would be even better.
I’ll be sleep deprived and will need assistance. Plus, nothing can make a great weekend better like skull bashing people who deserve it.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
well if you need some skull bashing, let me know
I’ll be there repping PSU class of 2010
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
There had to have been
another party, right?! But most of us have slipped in the ice, so no worries!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
When I was an undergrad
I had a friend who had an apartment in Cedar brook that overlook the corner of Locust and Beaver right by Canyon. We used to get drunk and laugh at people who fell on the ice coming down the hill on locust lane. I don’t care if that isn’t the most moral thing to do, it was funny to watch girls in 4 inch heels curse when they fell on an ice covered sidewalk.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, sorry to any of the girls I made fun of. But it was still funny to watch.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
theres videos on youtube of this happening.
tlrpsu - January 22, 2012
As a girl who fell
I completely support your actions. It was indeed funny as hell.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Thanks
When I was posting that I felt kind of bad. You reassured me that what we did was standard PSU behavior.
Still, I have to take this in context. I wish I had tipped my hat to any females, and rushed to help them up when they fell.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Yankee!
LOL!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
As a centrial Pennsylvanian
I’m not sure ‘Yankee’ is a great word to describe me. I think ‘well educated hick’ fits best. But go on as you wish.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Seeing as how I'm from Alabama,
anyone who lives north of Virginia is a Yankee. And that’s even stretching it!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
You know you're a true Southerner when people from Kentucky are Notherners.
leeharvey418 - January 22, 2012
Damn straight!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
lol I understand
My friends from the DC area disagree though. The ones from DC and MD call me a hick, while the ones from VA call me a yankee. I don’t think I can win this battle.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Hick and Southerner
are not synonyms. There’s lots of hicks from all parts of the country. Not everyone can be a Southern Gentleman (or Belle).
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I never claimed to be either
Just thought it was funny that you called me a Yankee. You might be the first person ever to use that specific word to describe me.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Well, I'm probably the only one here,
who is a true Southerner. If you were, you would have helped the ladies up! LOL!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
You got me.
I won’t claim to be a southern gentleman. Just a well educated hick who tried to be a good person. Should I have run downstairs to help those girls up? probably. But I won’t lie and say I did. By the time I got downstairs they prob.would have been gone anyway.
Still, I did my best to act with honor when I things came my way. BTW you can call me a yankee. It doesn’t really bother me. I just thought it was funny because I haven’t been called that before.
Regardless, I still love your opinion Paige.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
You're right.
I’m just giving you a hard time (TWSS). It’s what I do, just ask anyone!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Oh don't worry
I was hoping that was the case. I just can’t get over the humor in hearing myself called a Yankee. In fact, I’d love to hear that continue. It’s kind of amusing. :)
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
You should hear me speak.
You would really find that amusing. True southern accent!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
OH! I'd love that. My sourthern friends don't have heavy accents.
Please do tell!
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Do tell!
Had a friend who’d say “do tell” often back in the day! lovely reminder.
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
I've spent over 75% of my life in the South,
in various states. I don’t sound like a redneck, but I have a nice accent.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Im in Northern MD.
My coworkers range from MI, to PA, to GA and AL. None of them have accents at all though,no matter where they are from.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
I lost my accent
when we lived in Virginia Beach when I was a kid, got it back when we moved to Georgia, kept it once I moved to PA. Not ever losing it again!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
You mean
you resisted the opportunity to talk Pittsburghese?
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
God, yes.
Even got my college roommate from Pittsburgh saying y’all instead of yinz.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Gotta go,
good night all!
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
Good night!
Nice talking to you!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I tend to pick up
accents. When we lived in Fayetteville, NC while Mark was at Ft Bragg, I worked with a girl who was of German decent and started having a (nasty) accent. Fortunately that didn’t last long.
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
You should host
a podcast sometime!
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
I wouldn't even know how.
But I do record my lectures every week.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Do they drip syrup?
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Probably not that bad.
But when I presented at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and my time got cut short ahead of time, I made a joke about not being able to talk very fast and everyone loved it!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I never thought about the
incongruence of southern accent/timings and fast talk. Is it possible for a southerner to become an auctioneer?
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Maybe some.
But all I heard when I lived in Pittsburgh was how slow I talked! People thought I must be stupid because I talked slower than they did.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Absolutely,
southern auctioneers talk fast with words that have more syllables!
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
You have to pronouce every vowel!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Here, Here, Paige!
rec again and again
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
Is this the real CHPHT
or a Sears CHPHT?
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
NOT Sears
I’m the Real HePuHuTh. Received my PhT at PSU in 84!!
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
Just asking if 84
was posin’ again.
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
84 does do that
I was in the shower and he took a turn on my laptop. Thanks for getting things cleared up.
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
On a rainy day
I watched a girl completely wipe out on her bike on the asphalt by Mifflin Hall. She was turning, and her tires slid out from under her on the slick asphalt. 3 people ran over to check if she was ok. I chuckled and kept walking. I guess I was a dick. But at the time, I hated students on bikes.
I fell flat on my ass due to an ice puddle by Sharkies once.
06Lion - January 22, 2012
I fell so many times I can't count.
Only injured myself twice, but one of them was a slipped disc.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
A friend invited me to his place.
We’ll see how that goes.
Now that I’ve allowed myself to indulge I’m BSD again I can feel the addiction coming back, though. I kinda don’t want to leave.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
I know what you mean,
I have to wake up in 5 hours and yet can’t log off the computer…
Deaver78 - January 22, 2012
Stay up tonight
and blame BSD in the morning. It’s been a rough night, you deserve to indulge.
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Go and have fun, sis!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I'm trying!
I want to come home with a cool story to tell you in the morning. So far all I’ve got is “fell on ground. Friends think I’ve lost it. Cop driving by glared at me suspiciously. Laughed at him.”
dwf5095 - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Great Man
Joe Paterno is a great man. Well informed and smart people will always remember the man thousands of Penn Staters fondly refer to as “Joe Pa” for his accomplishments on the field, his integral role in Penn State’s growth into the school it is today, his philanthropy, and all he did for his players. The world will never see another Joe Paterno. Few coaches care more about the people they coach than their record of wins and losses. It just so happened that caring about people translated into enormous success for Joe Paterno. He will forever be a hero of mine and will always make me proud to be named Joe.
Two Shades of Blue - January 22, 2012 via iPhone app
Right On.
SubLime - January 22, 2012
Amen to that Shades
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Yes
Well before he was ever known as JoePa, or the first utterance of “We Are”, we knew we had something special, and so did the the scores of players who made their way to Penn State (before it was colloquially known as Happy Valley outside of…well, Happy Valley). People tend to measure Joe in the here and now, how very different it was in the ’70s. Archaic by comparison.
PSUMarine78 - January 22, 2012
Night, all!
Keep praying — for Joe and his family, for Penn State, for us, and for yourselves. God loves you!

May God wrap His arms around all of you. And how wonderful it was that your university was blessed with Joe for such an astounding number of years, with such a phenomenal record of success. Be grateful…and be patient with the new coaches…Life and football go on. Love you.

She already has
one PITA from falling on her saw.
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
True,
one is definitely enough!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Paige,
as to an earlier post: I’m southern born and breed (NC). MR. Comfort swept me off my feet and took me to northern parts for a spell. We have returned to my home area.
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
Good for you!
Obviously a good influence. What part of NC?
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Um, Paige
(maybe you should eat a bite of food.) I live with my adorable lion, PSU_Lion_84 who works at Duke U. ;)
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
I meant originally.
Or are you back in your hometown?
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Home =)
3/4 mile from my parents house. My house, next is my oldest brother’s house, next to his house is my youngest brother’s house
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
Sounds like
a separatist compound!
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Compound?
How to respond? Only Mark fells that way. Actually there are weeks, even months that pass and we might not even see each other . . . unless in vehicles
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
Got it!
Then I know roughly where you’re from! My parents live in Fuquay-Varina.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
South of Greensboro, NC
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
I mostly know that part of NC
from driving through on my way to Raleigh.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Mrs.Comfort.
I’m trying to find a southern lady for myself right now. I’d say ‘84 did all right by himself from what you’ve posted so far.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Since you just graduated in 2010,
I’m sure I have a lot of students who would be good to introduce you to!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
PPFCPP,
Where do you live? Am I correct in reading from Paige that you are a PSU 2010 graduate?
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
Correct.
I graduated in Dec. 2010. I have, since then, moved to MD (Baltimore / DC suburbs). Still a faithful PSU guy, but I’d love to move more south if my job will allow it (NC, SC or TN are at the top of my list).
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Don't move to Columbia, SC
or Memphis, TN. Other than that, I can agree with your choices.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
If you don't mind me asking
Why not columbia? That’s on my list along with Knoxville, Charlottd, and Augusta GA based on what my options appear to be.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
I lived there for a year
and 8 months and hated it. Didn’t really meet anyone while I was there, it was oppressively hot even for the South, and I hated my job. So part of that could just be me projecting my misery on the town.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Understandable
I have some freinds in the area who said columbia is a good place to look. I’ll keepthis in mind.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Charleston is much better.
And there’s a nuclear power plant nearby.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I have to disagree.
I loved my four years in Columbia.
Uhaul - January 22, 2012
We lived in Metro DC
for about 8 years. First in MD then in Manassas. What kind of work are you seeking?
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
I'm in nuclear engineering
and happy with my current company. I’m looking fora possible internal transfer within the next year or to. I’d prefer not to look fora completely new job, but who knows what will happen over a couple years.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
and for the record, I'm a solid hour north of DC
If anyone really cares, you can probably figure our where I work based on that. Not too many companies here.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
NE,
oh wow, don’t think we have anything here in NC. Had a guy at church a few years back with his masters who couldn’t find a job, went back to school, got married and went where his wife was employed.
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
PPFCPP, thank you kind sir!
Mind you, just because he is 53 doesn’t mean I’m that old. lol ;)
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012

AriesGD - January 22, 2012
It's been many, many, years
since I did it behind a bush.
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Never too late.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
I'll suggest that to the better half

PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Can always get fake plants
And put them around your bed, and pretend your doing it in the wooods.
Sorry, lame but best I can do while drunj.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Doing it in the woods
is easy, we live a quarter mile deep in the woods! Behind a bush is trickier, I may try the fake bushes just to confirm her opinion that I’m out of my mind.

tlrpsu - January 22, 2012
The news of my death have been greatly exaggerated
PSU_sincebirth - January 22, 2012
Great quote!!!
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
If I was sober and 15 years younger I'd be in SC with the students but I digress
I’m not sober
PSU_sincebirth - January 22, 2012
But you are 15 years younger?
leeharvey418 - January 22, 2012
Well I couldn't get past the first reason I couldn't go
So why worry about the rest?
PSU_sincebirth - January 22, 2012
I just finished beer 7!
But still over a 6 hour period now. I need to drink faster.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Yeha you do
So your basically sober, as per the 1 beer going through liver per hour rule. or something like that.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Except that I haven't eaten anything
in at least 8 or 9 hours.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I see the problem there.
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
As a central Penn hick (not a Yankee ;))
You should probably at least eat a piece of toast. We want you to be around commenting all night.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Awww, thanks!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
yeah a beer per hour wont' do much. its expensive to get drunk that way.
tlrpsu - January 22, 2012
Well I know I had to much to drink
I think I just read a nice piece on Joe on pennlive. I’m out cause I think I’m hallucinating
PSU_sincebirth - January 22, 2012
Peace Out
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Okay, loseing my buzz here
So must get some sleep.
Love all you BSD’ers. Without your help tonight would ahve been ridiculously hard, instead it was just hard to get through.
We Are, and always will be Penn State!!!
AriesGD - January 22, 2012
Good night!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
So profoundly sad
What people outside of the Penn State family don’t get is that Joe Paterno is more than just a legendary football coach. He is a great man that has had a positive impact on countless lives. Everyone has there shortcomings but Joe is all that is good about sport and the human spirit. JoePa, we love you so much and “You are PENN STATE!” We will never forget that!
SpecialAgentJohnnyUtah - January 22, 2012
signin off. gonna fall asleep to some breaking bad. LATERZ
tlrpsu - January 22, 2012
Good night!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Support
The comments I have read from fans from rival schools have been amazing. Even Ohio St. fans have been supportive and well wishing. Thank you all for realizing that there will never be another like Joe Paterno
SpecialAgentJohnnyUtah - January 22, 2012
My prayers are with your community from Chicago and Evanston
I’ve always admired Paterno for his high graduation rates and how he did mostly everything (pre-sandusky) right. He’s a good man who fought on the field honorably and was loyal to his institution. Godspeed Joe!
LincolnParkWildcat - January 22, 2012
Thanks,
except for the pre-Sandusky comment thrown in there.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Sorry
touchy subject. I should’ve left that out.
LincolnParkWildcat - January 22, 2012
Yes you should have,
but thank you for the apology and the kind words.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Yeah
Every damn article about his current condition ends with that. Seems like if you are reporting that he is about to die you wouldn’t finish with “and was shamed..” I should have learned from y’all but do not read the comments on ESPN.com. Sick ****s!
SpecialAgentJohnnyUtah - January 22, 2012
I've said this before
Ignore comments everywhere. They are the lowest of the low.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Sometimes I find myself doing that,
then it really pisses me off. I keep saying I should learn my lesson. But then again, I keep saying that about men, too.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Paige I think we are 2 of only 4-5 people still around
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Sounds about right.
Par for BSD After Dark. Since I’m on central time, I’m usually up later than the east coasters!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Early morning hours
are the best time to work and lurk. No phone calls, no interruptions.
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Not for me.
I usually don’t go into the office until 9 or 10. Of course, I usually teach until 8 on the nights that I have class, so that’s got something to do with it.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I tend to work until 4 or 5 AM
then catch 4 or 5 hours of sleep, then get back in the saddle again.
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
I've gotten to where I need more sleep than that!
I have to get at least 7 hours, it seems. I’m getting old!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
Supposedly you need less
sleep as you get older. I’m testing that notion. If I get 4 or 5 good hours in one shot and a couple of half hour naps during the rest of the day, I can carry on. Of course, drinking Dew all day long probably helps…
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
I think that just counts when you get really old!
I can’t go on as little sleep as I could even just a few years ago. But I can’t nap during the day, either.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
The gradual decline
If the changes in eyesight, hearing, and memory that I have experienced from 46 to 52 don’t slow down, I’ll just sit in the corner and drool when I reach 60!
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
Well, I'm 37.
Wow! Almost said 38, but that’s not for another few months! Haven’t really experienced the decline in eyesight and hearing, but my memory isn’t what it used to be (that could be alcohol related, though). The needing more sleep is what I’ve noticed more than anything.
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
I had a client that told me
(when I was still 38) that the body starts falling apart at 40. Of course I laughed it off then. But after playing soccer and volleyball for ~25 years without significant injury, I finally blew out a knee at 41. Go figure.
PSUGuru - January 22, 2012
comments on espn.com are like the scribbling on a bathroom wall in school
there’s no accountability there. Here, there is because of the SBN community
LincolnParkWildcat - January 22, 2012
Yup.
Don’t know why I figured everyone would show respect. Would love for someone to try to say those things in front of one of us.
SpecialAgentJohnnyUtah - January 22, 2012
lol
i like that comparison.
tlrpsu - January 22, 2012
Alright, y'all.
I’m too lazy to make something to eat, so I think I’m just going to go to bed. Glad today ended the way it did. Nice talking to you all!
Paige2PSU - January 22, 2012
It’s good to hear he’s still alive.
I hope he can recover.
the thin red line - January 22, 2012
No News on the Night watch
and at this point that is good news right?
jaytay13 - January 22, 2012
Morning!
Hey, you guys remember the time that Onward State tweeted that Joe died yesterday?
Wasn't that HILARIOUS?I’m still fuming about their (and CBS’) irresponsible actions. Complete nonsense.
Tailgate Shogun - January 22, 2012
I was ripped on Boilo last night and heard Joe died, then still alive, then dead
I think puked around 6am and he was officially dead.
Crappy day so far….RIP Joe
SweepTheLeg - January 22, 2012
Thank you all for this thread.
And the previous. We mourned, we laughed, and we went to bed hopeful. It did not end as we had hoped, but in a way, it ended as Joe would have liked. The media looking stupid, his loving fans not knowing the pain, and his family by his side. God bless, Joe.
