[UPDATE: Penn State is now reporting the death of Coach Paterno.]
What an emotional roller coaster ride yesterday was, am I right? I won't get into my personal feelings on what happened (though if you follow me on Twitter, you can likely put it together). For now, let's continue to monitor the situation and pray for our beloved Coach Paterno.
Sources that I consider very reliable, which seems to be a misnomer anymore, confirmed to me last night that the end isn't far off. We know Joe is surrounded by friends, family and loved ones of all kinds. We have no interest in breaking this story, but will certainly have news updates when credible information is released, either by our own sources or by actual members of the Paterno family.
Stay strong, Coach.

Good Morning
Last night was rough…..Im 30, cried with my mom in a restaurant when my dad texted me the false report in front of my fiance and future mother in law. Drank Jim Beam straight cause they didn’t have old granddad for Joe. Come on Joe….keep fighting

So, Penn State Football's Official Facebook just put this up
https://www.facebook.com/PSUFball
“With great sadness we mourn the passing of Coach Joe Paterno. Few have done more.”
Adam Collyer - January 22, 2012
Saw that
farrellpsu - January 22, 2012
I think the unthinkable happened
Just saw the PSU Football page on FB confirm his passing. R.I.P Joe you were the best.
PSUBarge - January 22, 2012
I'm really sorry for you all
I don’t think any of us who didn’t go to PSU or live in the area can fully comprehend what he’s meant.
R.I.P. Joe.

I'm sick to my f***ing stomach
Mr. Rosewater - January 22, 2012
on a side note
give Devon @ Onward State a freaking break. He made a mistake. And besides, it’s not as bad as all those years of reporters asking whether JoePa will coach until he dies.
Mr. Rosewater - January 22, 2012
I guess it's real this time.
Too Sad.

1973 Penn State vs. West Virginia My first trip to Beaver Stadium
I remember Cappy’s 4 TDs and the PA announcer congratulating the Nittany Lion on an excess of 300 pushups like it was yesterday. Have been a huge Penn State and Coach Paterno fan ever since. When my son took 2 recruiting visits to PSU 2 seasons ago I was as excited as he was about him possibly playing for Joe, a gentleman and scholar so unlike his peers in college football. God bless you, coach, for providing us fans with so much joy over many years, for all the good you’ve done in the community and the ever lasting impression you’ve left of the young men who were fortunate enough to have played for you.

I love you coach.
You showed us what it meant to be a Penn Stater and we will never forget you.

eSPN running a nice piece about him now
wonderlin - January 22, 2012
Well, it was good.
Looks like ESPN still wants to be a prick.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
The guy on ESPN now seems baffled that people would care about Paterno's passing
Seriously?
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
When you live in darkness,
how can you understand light?
ESPN sux.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
anyone have a preferred alternate to watching coverage on this?
The JuggerNitt - January 22, 2012
I was wondering the same.
This coverage is pretty poor, but I’m not sure where else to watch it.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
I refuse to give any MSM the views/hits/
whatever. Staying here with my Penn State brothers and sisters.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
#1 choice is Here @ BSD
yet in the background I have Fox News on. They have segments about Joe but more on cancer and getting checked out.
ComfortHePuHuTh - January 22, 2012
My condolences
I never imagined much when I started my blog in 2006. It eventually grew to the notice of SBNation (and Mike Hubbell advised me to come over). Five years after starting it, I thought it was cool I was able to meet JoePa last July at Big Ten media days.
I can’t imagine your pain this morning. He was a legend and deserved a better finish.
BoilerTMill - January 22, 2012
Thank you.

I will really really really miss you Joe.
The JuggerNitt - January 22, 2012
Love you, Coach. Will always love you.

Also, love you BSD
It’s going to take a long, long time to get used to even the thought that Joe is no longer with us, but I truly appreciate having a wonderful group of people like yourselves to grieve with, cry with, laugh and heal with.
wek5000lion09 - January 22, 2012
God bless you Joe, may you find peace after all that has transpired.
RossingtonCollins - January 22, 2012
Thanks, Coach and family,
for everything you did for Penn State and us. Love and prayers are with the family.

God Bless you Joe. You will always be remembered first as a Great Man and then as the Greatest Football Coach ever.

Godspeed.

Also, my thoughts are with the Paterno family.

Funny, My parents have one of those wheaties boxes in their basement
I can only imagine how gross the contents are, but I hope they keep it forever.
Also, the picture of Joe and Sue after the Cotton Bowl is just a fantastic picture.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
My deep condolences to your community and the Paterno famiy
As an third generation Italian-American, I’ve always been deeply proud of his success with honor as a coach, a human being, and a humanitarian. I’ll say a prayer to him and his family later in church today. I bet Joe is arguing with Bear Bryant and Randy Walker in heaven right now. We’ll probably never see a man like him ever again. Godspeed, Joe.

Thanks for sharing this, ppfcpp.
Wanted to know what we can do.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 22, 2012
They just don't make 'em like they used to.
Thank you to a man who gave so much of himself to so many. For the on-the-field, the off-the-field, the surprise appearances at THON, the visits to hospitals. For being the “cranky old guy” and for being the “sweet old man.” For telling the media to go piss up a rope when they were being stupid. For calling out players who you knew could do better, and for protecting players who made mistakes but were doing their best to correct them. For drawing a modest salary (by comparison to your “peers”) and then giving so much of it back to all of us.
This isn’t the ending we wanted, but you gave us all great memories that nobody can ever take away.
Thank you, Joe. You will be missed.

ESPN is actually doing a nice job.
Mike Ditka is going to town for him. God Bless you coach.
To all Penn Staters, we are the ones who will make him remembered for what he did that was right. Keep him memory alive. We are, and always be, Penn State.
PSU_Brian - January 22, 2012
I liked Ditka a lot
This host though just seems like he’s trying so hard to get people to be negative.
ppfcpp - January 22, 2012
Ditka was strong.
Nobody tells Mike Ditka what to think.

Well, looks like I'm gonna be drinking early on a Sunday morning.
Here’s to those who wish us well, and those who don’t may go to hell. Rest in peace, JoePa,

I can’t fathom a world without Joe. Can barely see what I’m typing though the tears. I feel like a family member has died. RIP Joseph Vincent Paterno. You are loved and respected by us all.

Shared this at my Dad's funeral.
Seems appropriate here:
Going home, going home
I’m just going home
Quiet light, some still day
I’m just going home
It’s not far, just close by
Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
Going to fear no more
Mother’s there expecting me
Father’s waiting, too
Lots of folk gathered there
All the friends I knew
All the friends I knew
I’m going home
Nothing’s lost, all’s gain
No more fret nor pain
No more stumbling on the way
No more longing for the day
Going to roam no more
Morning star lights the way
Restless dream all done
Shadows gone, break of day
Real life begun
There’s no break, there’s no end
Just a living on
Wide awake with a smile
Going on and on
Going home, going home
I’m just going home
It’s not far, just close by
Through an open door
I am going home
I’m just going home
Going home, going home

Pearl Jam -- Light Years
I’ve used hammers made out of wood
I have played games with pieces and rules..
I’ve deciphered tricks at the bar…
But now you’re gone,… I haven’t figured out why…
I’ve come up with riddles… and jokes about war…
I’ve figured out numbers and what they’re for…
I’ve understood feelings.. and I’ve understood words…
But how could you be taken away?…
And wherever you’ve gone…and wherever we might go…
It don’t seem fair…today just disappeared…
Your light’s reflected now,… reflected from afar…
We were but stones,… your light made us stars
With heavy breath,… awakened regrets…
Back pages and days alone that could have been spent,
Together… but we were… miles apart…
Every inch between us becomes light years now…
No need to be void,… or save up on life…
You got to spend it all…..
And wherever you’ve gone… and wherever we might go…
It don’t seem fair…you seemed to like it here…
Your light’s reflected now,… reflected from afar
We were but stones,… your light made us stars
And wherever you’ve gone… and wherever we might go…
It don’t seem fair…today just disappeared…
Your light’s reflected now,… reflected from afar…
We were but stones,… your light made us stars

One thing for certain, Heaven made one hell of a great hire for HC…
