Only seven days left in the Class of 2012 recruiting period, which culminates on February 1 with National Letter of Intent Day, commonly referred to as Signing Day, the first day that high school seniors can officially state their intent to play college football with a certain school. Until then, everything is verbal and non-binding; once ink meets paper and paper meets fax (one of the last remaining vestiges of that godforsaken machine), a contract is formed with certain requirements and expectations.
At Penn State, Signing Day typically comes and goes with little fanfare. The Joe Paterno Era Style of Recruiting was to get the class finished early and concentrate on the actual football. While there has been notable last-minute excitement in the past (see Henne, Chad; Shaw, Michael), for the most part, Penn State fans get to watch everyone else squirm as "results" come in for the higher profile players.
Those high profile players will be covered slightly in next week's open Signing Day thread. Today we take a look at the Class of 2012: who's in, who's out, what's left, and what are the overall impression.

Who's In - The Future Penn State Nittany Lions
As of this morning, Penn State is sitting tight with 19 commitments, including will-he-or-wont-he PA QB Skyler Mornhinweg. Until we hear word otherwise, Mornhinweg is in. The commits, by commit date:
| First | Last | Pos. | Class | Commit Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anthony | Stanko | OL | FR | 3/19/2011 |
| Brent | Wilkerson | TE | FR | 3/26/2011 |
| Jesse | James | TE | FR | 3/28/2011 |
| Brian | Gaia | DL | FR | 5/9/2011 |
| Derek | Dowrey | DT | FR | 6/25/2011 |
| Austin | Johnson | DT | FR | 6/25/2011 |
| Nyeem | Wartman | LB | FR | 7/9/2011 |
| Skyler | Mornhinweg | QB | FR | 7/19/2011 |
| Jake | Kiley | DB | FR | 7/27/2011 |
| Eugene | Lewis | WR | FR | 8/10/2011 |
| Malik | Golden | WR | FR | 8/24/2011 |
| Jamil | Pollard | DL | FR | 12/29/2011 |
| Jordan | Lucas | DB | FR | 1/16/2012 |
| Akeel | Lynch | RB | FR | 1/22/2012 |
| DaQuan | Davis | CB | FR | 1/22/2012 |
| Trevor | Williams | WR | FR | 1/22/2012 |
| Jonathan | Warner | WR | FR | 1/22/2012 |
| Steven | Bench | QB | FR | 1/24/2012 |
| Wendy | Laurent | OL | FR | 1/24/2012 |
By position, the commitments break down as follows: QB - 2, RB - 1, WR - 4 (Malik Golden is being looked at here by the Penn State staff, but a switch to DB is entirely possible), TE - 2, OL - 2, DL - 4, LB - 1, DB - 3. Certain positions have been stocked well (WR, DL), but there are still needs in this class. Another offensive lineman would be a plus, as well as at least one more defensive back. A second running back would be nice, but unlikely. With only Derek Moye leaving the receiving corps, there is a good possibility that at least one of the four wide receivers in the class will move to the secondary.
Who's Left - The Prospects, With A Week To Go
As you can imagine, the vast majority of recruits have given their verbal commitment to play college football by now, including our own 19 commitments above. However, not everyone is as sure as those players, and some need time to make their final decision. This choice, after all, will affect the rest of their lives. But, as stated above, Penn State typically doesn't end with too much fanfare, so the remaining prospect list isn't too long. However, keep an on the following:
| First | Last | Pos. | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demetrious | Cox | DB | PSU/OSU battle - 50/50; highest target |
| Carnell | Boyd | WR | Current Akron commit, probable flip |
| Evan | Schwann | DE | No offer…yet; will commit on the spot |
| Jordan | Moore | DB | From Georgia with SEC offers |
| Kenderius | Whitehead | DL | Teammate of Boyd, Moore; NC State commit |
| Beau | Hankins | LB | From Alabama, unlikely commit |
Of these, there are some almost-certainties and some developments to watch. I'd be truly shocked if Schwann did not end up as a part of this class. Schwann will likely commit on the spot once he finally receives his offer.
Boyd, Moore, Whitehead and Hankins are all southern offers, the first three being high school teammates. Their offers alone represent a breath of fresh air from this staff, who seem intent on making southern recruiting a priority. Of these four, I'll guess that two end up at Penn State. Boyd is a likely candidate, while the other two are slightly higher in terms of stars/offers. Moore has offers from a lot of southern schools, while Whitehead is a current NC State commit. Hankins likely won't be on campus, but anything is possible.
Finally, there's Demetrious Cox. He is going to be the prize recruit at the end of this class, and will likely take this thing down to the wire. Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Pitt are all making runs at the talented western PA defensive back that hails from the same high school as Penn State's last down-to-the-wire recruit. The class's success will not be made or lost with Cox, but a commitment from him will go a long way to keeping this a decent-to-solid class in a year that could have ended a lot worse.
How Many More - Crunching the Numbers; Or On Scholarships and Oversigning
Some quick math and explanations: By our count, as of today, Penn State football has 65 scholarship players on the roster, not including fifth-year senior Brandon Beachum, who has reportedly left the team.
Adding the 19 Class of 2012 commits from above, and the current scholarship number sits at 84. And here is where it gets interesting. Despite being one of the more vocal critics of oversigning, the Big Ten conference actually allows the practice, within moderation. Big Ten schools are allowed to sign an additional three extra players than their targeted class, which means that on February 1, the scholarship list can actually total 88.
This means that Penn State has room for four more commitments, provided all 19 commitments stand. Two of the prospects above will likely end up at Penn State, which leaves two more spots. If Cox takes one, that leave a final opening for a Class of 2012 commit.
That doesn't necessarily mean they must all be used, though. One or two scholarships going unused by a school is nothing new, and the normal procedure if it happens is to reward a hard working junior or senior with a free ride for a year. It's happened at Penn State before, and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened this year. This would be a one year deal, and the scholarship would be then thrown back into the pool to be used toward the Class of 2013, which at first glance, looks like it will be on the small side, with only 15 seniors on the 2012 roster.
Who's Out - The Once and Former Nittany Lions
Before we leave, we pay tribute to those we once cared for, but who have moved on to greener pastures. In case you've been under a rock for the past three months, the Penn State recruiting class has seen it's share of bumps along the way. The following players were, at one time, committed to Penn State, but have since parted ways. The former commitments, with their new school of choice:
| First | Last | New School |
|---|---|---|
| Jarron | Jones | Notre Dame |
| Joey | O'Connor | Ohio State |
| Tommy | Schutt | Ohio State |
| Cam | Williams | Ohio State |
| Armani | Reeves | OSU/Michigan |
| J.P. | Holtz | Pitt/MSU |
| J.J. | Denman | Rutgers |
Once named the new head coach, Urban Meyer and Ohio State went to town on our committed players, though the major scandal didn't help matters. It's tough to hold any sort of grudge against these kids, as they are only trying to make the best decision for themselves. But it's similarly difficult to look at that list and think "What if..." Maybe they'll turn out to be busts, but there is some solid talent on that board, players that the Nittany Lions will eventually see on the playing field.
(As for the two uncommitted prospects on that board, my guess is: Reeves to Michigan, Holtz to Pitt.)
Class of 2012 Analysis
Where do you even begin to discuss this class? On November 1, 2011, the Class of 2012 was shaping up to be one of the best in recent history, and Penn State was at the top of many highly rated recruits short lists. After that, things fell apart. As you can see above, there was a four month pause between commitments while the Penn State name and reputation came crashing down. Additionally, a head coach was fired and a new one wasn't named for two months, a period of uncertainty that didn't do any favors to the recruiting efforts.
From a pure stars/offers standpoint, this class is mediocre at best. It's going to be ranked somewhere in the 30-40 range by the services, and that's being kind. At the time of this post, the current rankings are: 247Sports (34), Scout (37), and Rivals (44). Adding a couple more commitments, especially Cox, will nudge them up, but in a pure numbers perspective, this class isn't anything to write home about.
However, we all know that numbers aren't everything. Could this class end up being mediocre, as targeted by the services? Yes, and history tells us with relative certainty that some of these players will never see meaningful time at Penn State. But could there be a Daryll Clark, Deon Butler, or some other diamond in the rough? Yes, and that's what fans are hoping for.
Tune back in next Wednesday (and everyday, for that matter) to see how this class ends, officially. The mothership has you covered, as well. As per usual, we'll have an open thread going to watch the other top players make their choices. And let's hope that there aren't any big surprises for Penn State...unless of course some of those former commitments want to rejoin the class. In that case, I think we can make an exception.
UPDATE ONE - Geographic Assignments
I don’t think there is any doubting that LJSr. will continue to blanket the VA/MD/DC area with his man hugs. But what about everyone else. A member of 247Sports with a good deal of knowledge on Penn State recruiting and a solid reputation for quality recruiting information posted the following predictions, based on the staff’s previous responsibilities, reprinted with his express permission:
Godsey: FL
Hixon: FL
Roof: GA, FL, AL
London: Mid Atlantic
Strollo: New England
MacWhorter: Probably won’t recruit a lot, but FL and GA
LJ: MD, VA
Vandy: MI, IL, IN, OH
Butler: SC
I tend to agree with a good deal of this. Some of it will change as we see which recruits are talking to which coaches, but we know a lot of this is true already. Roof is going to be our Georgia man, while BOB has made it clear he wants multiple coaches in Florida.
Noticeably absent are two core states. New Jersey is difficult, as we’ve never done too much damage there. Though talent levels aren’t ever extremely high, it would be nice to be able to establish some good ties to the area. John Strollo is from NJ, but Vanderlinden and Butler have each recruited there as well.
The other state is Pennsylvania. BOB has stated that each coach will have an area of PA to recruit, but splitting PA into 10 distinct areas seems silly, so it’s likely that BOB meant the state will be split up into sections, and coaches assigned. Who takes those sections is still a guess. You’ll notice above that Vandy is a good choice to take over the bulk of the midwest, so assigning him western PA makes a good deal of sense.
UPDATE TWO - Programming Note
A Signing Day podcast is set to be recorded this weekend. Look for it early next week, before the Signing Day festivities. The podcast will feature Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan bloggers that cover their respective teams recruiting discussing the Class of '12, how it will finish, and what to look for in the Class of '13.

Finally!
I’m allowed to post on here! I’ve been enjoying the threads…hopefully I’m not a complete idiot poster.
LoggingLion - January 25, 2012 via mobile
While getting late in this year's recruiting cycle
It can never hurt to get started analyzing this new written commitment:
1. “Finally!” Solid first use of subject line. Clearly not ATO/OSU material, so that’s a positive. Correct punctuation.
2. “allowed.” Proper spelling, always a plus.
3. “I’ve been enjoying the threads.” Good use of introductory flattery, which we know gets you everywhere.
4. “…” Ut-oh, ellipsis. Could be a warning sign, but newly-hired BSD offensive writing coach could coach him up out of this habit.
5. “hopefully I’m not a complete idiot poster.” A little humble, which goes a long way. Shows some semblance he’s self-aware, could be a sign he’s coachable.
Overall, looks like a solid Black Shoe Diaries kind of guy. Nothing flashy, possibly a good character guy. Welcome to BSD, son! Work hard and make us proud.
jtothep - January 25, 2012
I don't know, not really feeling it with this guy. Never heard of him before. Obviously the mods liked him but is this a desparation new member or someone that will help us down the road. I don't know.
Were there any other blogs out there chasing this poster? I didn’t see him in any big time program blogs. the ellipsis are a flashing “OH NO” to me, maybe minor to you but at this time I will defer to the mods for allowing the new poster and say welcome :)
BMAN13 - January 25, 2012
What were his other offers?
Stars don’t mean much to me, but did he also have offers for posting rights at BHGP or EDSBS?
PSU Mudder - January 25, 2012
We'll never be as elite
as BHGP.
Paige2PSU - January 25, 2012
I think the reason his offer sheet is so low
was due to a lack of focus at times. You will see that he didn’t address the nature of this specific post. He got a little worked up announcing his appearance and forgot to get to the point. JT pointed out that he has the raw ability to generate a comment, but we will have to see if he can put the mental side together.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
He didn't even start reading blogs until recently
He could be somewhat of a late-bloomer. I mean, from what I’ve seen, he has some of the tangible assets you look for. Maybe the mods saw some potential, and with a little coaching he can show that their faith in him was well-placed.
OctaShields - January 25, 2012
Recs for everyone.

hbeach08 - January 25, 2012
Glad to see an actual comment.
Had he been one of the morons that leaves just a subject line on one blog, then another and another before actually committing with a comment, well – that’s just not the Penn State way.
Pete the Streak - January 25, 2012
But is he a high motor guy?
With great character.
EREX21 - January 25, 2012
He's only posted once so far.
You gotta wonder about his work ethic.
WorldBFat - January 25, 2012
He seems to be gaining noteriety,
and is shooting up the BSD target list. Picking up steam at just the right time.
dbl5030 - January 25, 2012
I'm holding judgment until we can see more.
I want to see how he holds up during the Spring practice and Blue & White game. Not sold, but think he has a pretty good shot here.
Succss With Honor Always - January 25, 2012
But is he elite?
lexi1031 - January 25, 2012
I haven't seen him on any VT blogs
jls83 - January 25, 2012
Does he enjoy the taste of
Diet Dr. Pepper?
The Booster - January 25, 2012
Thank you
I had to fight the urge to use the ellipsis after that so I will most certainly use them sparingly and correctly. Its a pleasure to be aboard.
LoggingLion - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Plus...
Im a definite high motor guy, and will gladly hurl myself down the steps into the BSD basement and claw my way back out just to prove that I’m the same type of “diamond in the rough” our recruiting class has peppered through it. And the “logging” part of my moniker is not the “log in” type of computer rhetoric I’m doing now, but the actual “chainsaw and sawdust” logging…so balancing my keyboard on the hood of a John Deere skidder gets a little tricky. But enough about me.
LoggingLion - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Ha!
Good on ya for playing along.

Is BOB on the road today?
Do we know who he is going to see this week?
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
Yes, he's out today.
I’ve heard he’s headed to DC, but I’m not sure who is there. You’d think his first stop would be to Jeannette, PA. I’ve also heard he has to be back in Foxboro by next Wednesday, so it’ll be close.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
Next Wednesday?
As in a week from today? That will be awkward since the team is leaving for Indy Sunday.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
That's what I meant.
But yes, next Wednesday. Honestly, I don’t know how he’s been splitting time, but it’s got to be torture on his sleep patterns.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
Today is the last day off.
Super Bowl practices start tomorrow morning in Foxboro, continue through Sat, and then the team leaves for Indy Sunday. I can’t imagine he is on the road more than today and getting back tomorrow.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
Also,
I share your curiousity on Cox. Maybe there is some other surprise in the works that we never heard? He’s about to pull Diggs with an assist from LJ?
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
Doubt it, as well as Ronald Darby before anyone mentions him.
Maybe some ‘13 prospects if BOB thinks the ’12 class is sewn up or the remaining targets are sufficiently recruited. I just don’t know.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
So,
you haven’t got your BOBjack installed yet?
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
FLAGGED!
jtothep - January 25, 2012
Is he on FlightAware?
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
Good question.
Don’t we have a resident expert commenter here? Works in aviation or something? Can he get BOB an assigned tracking number?
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
Getting a new BPS for my birthday.
Ya know – BOB Positioning System.

I see what you did there.
Pete the Streak - January 26, 2012
Still thinking out loud here,
what are the chances of another run at Severin? Now that we have his teammate in the fold maybe he has been doing some work on him.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
They've already hired his replacement
Which I’m sure helps.
jesse. - January 25, 2012
DC huh?
that’s where Eddie Goldman lives
Dr.TobiasFunke - January 25, 2012
And Marion Berry!
WorldBFat - January 25, 2012
You once shaved Marion Berry's image into your chest hair didn't you?
jtothep - January 25, 2012
Does it count as only once if you keep
using the razor to maintain the image? Or is each subsequent shaving another time? That could impact whether he “once” shaved Marion’s image.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
"Dang Blade set me up!"
Pete the Streak - January 25, 2012
I really did the heart thing once, but this really has me thinking...
I wonder how complex a design I could shave. I have the thick, dark chest hair of a Mediterranean man. If I can shave Marion Barry so that he is recognizable, I should.
WorldBFat - January 25, 2012
while tucking
don’t forget the tucking
hbeach08 - January 25, 2012
If I pulled off a Marion Barry chest shave, I'd be too engorged to tuck.
WorldBFat - January 25, 2012
Dont give urban ideas!
I am going to be furious if I see a Brenneman portrait on urb’z chest next year
jrock4 - January 25, 2012
I wouldn't get my hopes up that he's visiting a big 2012 name.
And the report could have been wrong (imagine that). I think Cox, and maybe Morgan now, are the only two names that we’ll keep an eye on for the last week. The rest of the class should be relatively low fanfare.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
So you are guaranteeing a huge splashy signing
next Wednesday! Sweet!
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
Meh.
That’s the best way to describe this class. The only thing really keeping me moderately positive is the hope that the new staff has more skill in player development than that of the outgoing group.
We all knew this class was going to be a little rough. That said though, I like BOB’s philosophy and am looking forward to seeing what he and his staff can do with their first full class in 2013.
Swiggs - January 25, 2012
I'm sure I'll be in the minority on this....and I don't know, maybe I'm just waxing poetic from the sorrow over the weekend,
but I want to believe this is going to be a special class. I look back at the class of DWill, JKing, and others and see how that changed PSU football for the back half of this decade and hope this class could be like that. They aren’t close in talent, but this is a group of kids who have made a commitment to PSU during one of the toughest/darkest times in the programs history. Maybe none of these kids will turn out to be stars or set records like that previous class, but this is the last class brought in during the JoePa era. They chose PSU to be a part of something special, even when everyone outside tells them what a horrible place PSU is now. I want to believe that in 10 years we’ll look back and at the very least, see this class bridged the gap between era’s. And when PSU could have been staring at a 2nd coming of the "Dark Years", these kids stepped in and helped keep PSU going. I just wish all of these kids success and it shows a lot about the character of each one of them. It’s not about how many stars they have, but about what kind of kids/men they are and are going to be. I think there is nothing that helps keep Joe’s memory alive like a group of under the radar, hard working kids who will hopefully overachieve and succeed.
(I posted this on the Bench commit thread, but think it fits better here)
GMac14 - January 25, 2012
Ok but this is last time I'm going to Rec this :)
Dr.TobiasFunke - January 25, 2012
I appreciate the positive spin. Wish I shared the optimism.
One thing I will say is that I completely agree with your comments regarding the character of these young men. The fact that they are committing and standing by PSU during a difficult time is commendable. It’s something the more highly recruited guys couldn’t get past.
Swiggs - January 25, 2012
When I think of these new commits
I don’t necessarily look at them as men of high character for coming to PSU. After all, most of them had offers from inferior programs prior to State entering the picture. There are exceptions to this, obv, and they do get credit for coming to PSU this year of all years, but let’s keep some perspective – they’re getting a lot out of the deal.
stewsplace - January 25, 2012 via mobile
That's the way that I'm looking at it too.
I mean, let’s be honest and use QB commit Steven Bench as an example:
Of course it’s great that he’s coming here to play football and we’re happy that he decided to get a great education at one of the finest academic institutions on the planet and that he will hopefully make the world a better place like every student that graduated from Dear Old State before him, but purely from a football perspective, PSU is a better program than Rice and it’s certainly better than the FCS schools that gave him offers, so picking Penn State is a no-brainer. This is the ultimate example of a recruit buying low.
Bob Sacamano - January 25, 2012
I certainly agree with your point.
My comment is geared more toward them looking past the current situation. And I should have specified that I speak more for those that have stayed with us through everything, not the newer 2* guys that had no FBS offers. I like the loyalty to the school the original commits have shown while others fled.
Swiggs - January 25, 2012
I understand
And my response was probably meant more for Gmac.
stewsplace - January 25, 2012 via mobile
I agree these kids are getting a lot out of the deal....
but they would have got a lot out of the deal at the other schools as well. If PSU turns out to be as toxic as everybody else is saying it is, then these kids took a big risk coming. And it could have basically ruined their playing careers by coming here. (I personally don’t think PSU is toxis by any means, but what the national media has done lately sure makes it seem that way)
I’m not saying these kids deserve bronze statues built for them because they chose PSU, I’m just saying I’d love to give the benefit of the doubt to these kids. Are they top prospects? No. But they made the decision to come to Happy Valley and be a part of something that’s bigger than just football. And for that, I respect them. And with what happened recently, I’d rather be hopeful about their future than be down on it. We can be down on things in a month of two. But right now, I’ve had enough sadness with PSU in the past few months. I’m just looking for a little optimism and these kids committing to play here isn’t a bad place to start.
GMac14 - January 25, 2012
I could not agree more!
I truly believe this will not only be a special class but BOB (his red bull personality) will have ZERO issues motivating the boys!
Color me crazy…I believe JoePa is going to have a HUGE impact on this team!
Let the rebuttals and “get the f@$& out of here” begin…
Batwing - January 25, 2012
and besides
it always has been and always will be more than just winning football games. What those kids do the other 350 days a year is what truly counts. First and foremost, let’s hope they get the fine educations they were promised and help keep the Grand Experiment alive.
cs93 - January 27, 2012
My twitters say
Wayne Morgan (NY) 4 star (QB/DB) recruit may flip to penn state currently choosing between Syracuse and UConn
Dr.TobiasFunke - January 25, 2012
Wayne Morgan is a new development.
He’s a former UM silent verbal, who lost his spot when the class filled up/he was passed by other targets. Whether he’s in serious contention this late in the game is anyone’s guess, but he could be a replacement for Reeves or Cox (likely Cox in that scenario, as both Morgan and Cox project as safeties).
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
That would be nice
but hasnt there been some concern over his maturity?
jrock4 - January 25, 2012
Only that he's TOO MATURE!
OOOOH WAH AH AH AH!
WorldBFat - January 25, 2012
Concern I've seen is actually around his play.
Some think he’s not that great of a DB and is rated too highly in the state of NY.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
silent verbal....
How is one silently verbal?
Esteban d' Amur - January 25, 2012
Tells the staff that he's in, but prolongs publicly for whatever reason.
I find them to be stupid, but apparently they exist. Some have said that Noah Spence was a silent PSU verbal after Cam Williams started recruiting him. Obviously you can see how binding any of this is before Signing Day.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
I'm still kinda pissed
That the ‘oral commitment’ thing didn’t take hold.

Yea, that's the article that started the day's infatuation with Morgan.

Is what It Is
This class is what it is and hopefully the players in this class turn out to be great players. We have enough underclassman too stay a solid football team. The coaches foucus should be on next years class. Adam Breneman seems to be ours to lose and if they let him go to another school it will be all on them. Start out strng and our class next year will be incredible!
KatManDuww - January 25, 2012
Just to be safe
I hope the Patriot’s tight ends catch 3 or 4 touchdown passes in the SB.
CvilleLion - January 25, 2012
Looking at the roster above...
The team depth is definitely shallow at CB and S… Cox and Morgan would be nice, needed additions… plus switching 1 from WR or ATH to DB is probably in order.

This class doesnt need to be world beaters
I think we should have enough residual talent in the last few recruiting years that this class just needs to have a few leaders. Guys who, when they are seniors, can take the reins and lead this team full of hopefully star studded recruits the new staff is going to bring in in the future.
You can survive one mediocre class. Its when you follow it up with bad classes that you get into trouble.
The fact that these guys have stuck with us throughout our recent issues shows me no evidence that they cant be high character leaders in the future.
swiggy04 - January 25, 2012
To be fair, the 2011 class was mediocre as well.
247Sports (33rd), Scout (34th), Rivals (35th). BOB needs to hit 2013 hard, and it needs to be a big one.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
Last year is a bit misleading in terms of rankings, in my opinion.
Last year’s class was top 25 in average stars. The small class size hurt the rankings.
However, that does highlight just how mediocre this year’s class is turning out, and the negative impact it could have. With many more players we are going to rank lower even lower. If you took the last two years and average out the number of players and average stars, you could argue that a poor recruiting year this year has turned into a negative two-year impact. That alone won’t knock the program down talent wise, but one more sub-par year and we could be in for a short BOB-tenure.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
Yeah last year we had a really high average level of recruit.
We just had very few scholarships to go around. I’m a bit more concerned about this year, but really, I don’t see too many “gambles” in this class. These are through and through a bunch of guys that look like they can all be solid contributors.
mvrck - January 25, 2012
Average stars
much more important than total points IMO.
More important than that is the ability to identify and develop talent that will work for the system in place, for the most part.
FB6244 - January 25, 2012
Not sure about "knocking the program down"
As a post some months ago detailed – the old coaching staff didn’t exactly coach players up to their potential or star rankings (generally speaking). So with a new energetic staff, we could be mildly surprised with the transition and product on the field. Staying optimistic

Thanks Junny

Much appreciated.
Artiefufkin10 - January 25, 2012
It's actually enjoyable.
And it helps me keep things straight. I still haven’t figured out a solution to keeping track of all of the recruits, visits, opponents visits, etc., but the scholarship/depth chart and commit tracker is pretty handy.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
I second that, Artie!
stewsplace - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Does it help with Skyler
that his dad wasnt hired for the Oakland position? Or are we just out of it because of our request for him to play safety?
jrock4 - January 25, 2012
Probably the latter.
And the whole coaching change. It looks like he’s in the running for one of the remaining Florida spots, and VaTech is still in play. Really, you could add his name to the “Watch until the end” list along with Cox and Morgan.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
Thanks
Also, can you confirm/deny that BOB is holding an old school game boy in the photo above?
jrock4 - January 25, 2012
Holy shit
it’s a VHS tape. I wonder how many current recruits even know what that is?

DAT Tape
jesse. - January 25, 2012
Holy
You brought up the DAT tape. Major props there
AriesGD - January 25, 2012
I had a roommate.
In 1998 he took DAT tapes from Phish tapers and burned first generation tapes. It seems so trite at the time, but I was able to listen to the whole Summer Tour in 1998 only a day or two after the shows. Now you can download them on your phone walking out of the venue, but then it was a major privilege.
I actually let the guy live in my apartment for free for the summer with the proviso being that I got full access to the DAT player and was allowed to make tapes of anything I wanted for the entire summer.
jesse. - January 25, 2012
Did you tie an onion to your belt that summer?
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
And smoked it.
Just to make sure.

Hmmm Phish DAT Tapes
NJDeadhead - January 26, 2012

I think it might be an external disk drive. Guess PSU’s not on the cloud.
kijana's acl - January 25, 2012
I think that might be a DVC-PRO or something of that ilk.
It’s actually digital, but still on tape.
psuwxman - January 27, 2012
Does the new staff want him to play safety?
If that’s the case, they must really see something in Bench that they like or are just looking at a better QB coming in during the 2013 class. Seems like it would be a bit of a gamble with the QB’s currently on the roster to move the highest rated (possible) QB recruit to another position.
GMac14 - January 25, 2012
I'm not sure where the safety rumor started, but I"ve seen it around.
I do know that there are a couple highly rated QB recruits that the staff are after in ‘13. What I don’t know is the validity of the safety rumor, nor the openness of Mornhinweg to it.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
The first person to start the safety rumor
was Sekrah. So, yeah, I’ll go on not believing that.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
BOB
looks like he is awkwardly practicing a very poor Welcome speech for the new recruits in front of a mirror. “Welcome…new recruits. Thank you for choosing to come to Penn State. I was afraid that on your way to [pauses to read cue cards] State College that you might commit to Ohio State. [waits for polite laughter]”
skarocksoi - January 25, 2012
I love the depth chart, Junny (in addition to all of the other info, of course).
It has caused all kinds of questions stirring in my mind. I think the one that sticks out for me most is: What does BOB do with our FBs? Building on that, if he likes Zordich’s lead blocking ability and fire, but maybe not his hands etc, but doesn’t plan to keep the FB position long term, is Zwinak a candidate to go Cooley-style-H-Back? If we see some surprise production out of a player in that mold, it would be almost like a new recruiting addition.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
I forgot to put in the disclaimer
That the depth chart was obviously not a rigid sheet, especially along the lines. That chart will change a million times before September 1; for today’s purposes, it was simply a placeholder for our 65 scholarships.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
Oh, no, I think that's pretty clear.
But it’s fun to mentally shift players around, and even think about how the formations may change. I can see Zwinak moving all around the field and creating mismatches. If BOB is trying to do the same things the Pats offense does now, seems like he could be a good tool for that.
PSUinBOSSton - January 25, 2012
That's a good point and I've wondered if the traditional FB position may be done at PSU
at least while BOB is the head coach. I’m not saying that’s a good or bad thing, but definitely something that needs to be watched more closely.
GMac14 - January 25, 2012

UPDATE ONE - Geographic Assignments
Something I didn’t cover in the post because it’s still a work in progress – geographic assignments.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
I am going to throw up during the first Vandy/Bradley recruiting battle in W PA
jrock4 - January 25, 2012
It ain't far off, if Bradley goes to Iowa.
Five-star WR Robert Foster from Monaca, PA. Already an impressive offer sheet (though it doesn’t include Iowa yet).
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
surprised they dont have Butler as the PA guy
isnt he from PA?
skarocksoi - January 25, 2012
Philly, I believe.
Which means he’ll almost certainly get the SEPA beat.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
Also 2 other things
Not sure I like Strollo as the sole New England guy, and do we really need 4 guys in Florida? I get we want to recruit there more, but I dont know if dedicated 4 guys outside your traditional area is a great idea.
skarocksoi - January 25, 2012
Yea, this is where I see the first bend in BOB's recruiting rhetoric coming from.
I can see spreading out the southern guys to include Florida AND another state. But any more than two dedicated Florida recruiters seems to wear thin the rest of the resources.
Jeff Junstrom - January 25, 2012
What about Texas?
Maybe McWhorter won’t be recruiting much, but it wouldn’t hurt to have him keeping his eyes open through his Texas contacts.
Willie Green - January 25, 2012
NJ Difficult ?
For as long as I can remember PS has hit NJ hard. McCreary and Anderson used to hit NJ aggressivly. NJ produces a ton of talent although most of it leaves there is still a ton of talent there. PS has has a great deal of sucess there in the past always grabbing 3,4 or 5 kids from there. I think it would be A HUGE mistake casting aside NJ.

UPDATE TWO - Programming Note
I’ll be recording a podcast this weekend with an OSU and Michigan blogger, each of whom are well versed in their respective recruiting. We’re going to discuss each school, recruiting in general, and what the future holds for three schools, none of which have the same head coach they did two years ago.
Stay tuned, as we hope to have it out early next week, before OMGSIGNINGDAY!

ugh, turning out to be a disapointing class
I knew it would be tough going this year but dam. We used to get nothing but 4 star recruits with some 3’s & 5’s sprinkled in now we’re battling non-football powers for 2 star kids. While I have never been a huge believer in some rankings of 18 yr olds this is very concerning. Even more concerning is, isn’t this Holtz kid a TE ? Doesn’t he see what BOB does with TEs ? The whole Patriot offense is now geared to their 2 beasts. IDK, hopefully next year will be better but I just can’t picture us grabbing too many kids from OSU and UM. If we can’t keep the PA & NJ kids in State College we are in real trouble.
NJDeadhead - January 26, 2012
The gap between those two and the rest of the Big Ten is enormous at this point. PSU will get better, but it will take a long time.
Bud Elliott - January 26, 2012
Luckily, Penn State has a lot of true fans who are intelligent and will support the program even through the coming lean years. Many programs do not have that.
Bud Elliott - January 26, 2012
The gap is very large for a variety of reasons (namely Meyer, Hoke, Mattison, et al.).
But I don’t think it will take as long as you might think for PSU to get up to their level. BOB has surrounded himself with a good number of quality recruiters (Butler and London seem like they will be beasts out there), as well as hitting the trail pretty hard already. For example, a PSU plane went from DC (contact still unknown) to Latrobe (Demetrious Cox?) to New York (Wayne Morgan?) to Boston all in one day yesterday.

To be honest with you, I am not well versed on those two as far as recruiters. I know Vandy and Johnson are real good, and it sounds like BOB could be pretty good. I am just not sure of Butler or Landon and MacWhorter for that matter. The thing that bothers me more is that we really didn’t out recruit UM or OSU even with OSU on probation and non-bowling and UM having a few really bad years ( excluding last year).
