I'm not even sure why I'm writing this. The game went exactly as expected, if not worse. The Buckeyes raced out to a 24-6 lead with just over 6 minutes remaining the first half, and it was a slugfest from there on out with neither team looking particularly interested. Penn State buried its effort under a pile of bricks on the offensive end. They shot just 7-32 for the first half and were down by 20 at halftime.

PSU was at least competitive in the second half, but OSU called off the dogs. And even when they did, OSU's talented freshmen reserves came in and dominated. The bigger, stronger, and more athletic Buckeyes controlled the inside from the start to finish. Sasa Borovnjak and Jon Graham had their hands full all game long with Jared Sullinger (20 points and 13 rebounds). Graham picked up 5 fouls in just 8 minutes, while Sasa didn't score in his 25 minutes of action. Ross Travis did what he could inside, but he was blocked 3 times by freshmen big man Amir Williams near the end of the game (2-10 from the floor for 5 points).

Tim Frazier, Jermaine Marshall, and Cammeron Woodyard were PSU's only threats (16, 14, and 10 points respectively), but neither of three were efficient (all shot 36% or worse). Frazier was more productive than I thought he'd be with 16 points and 4 assists, but he played nearly the whole game including when OSU let up. Speaking of, I understand trying to instill a never give up attitude among these guys, but Chambers has to be cautious with the wear and tear on Tim. He's never played this many hard minutes on his skinny frame, and he has seemed a bit gimpy this last week or two.

Team Poss Score PPP eFG% OReb% TO% FT Rate
PSU 70 54 0.77 35.2% 27.1% 14.3% 25.0%
OSU 70 78 1.11 54.0% 26.7% 18.6% 68.0%

Star-divide

It's hard to think the loss of Billy Oliver and Trey Lewis having a damaging impact on PSU's offense, but this team is so scoring-deficient they need all the help they can get. They've really done well in other areas like taking care of the basketball and rebounding most of this conference season. But when it comes to putting the ball in the hoop, they are atrocious. We can only hope this team shoots itself out of any ineptitude records they are likely approaching. ESPN already showed that PSU's shooting in conference play was the lowest out of any major-conference team and that was before tonight's egg.

Chambers got his second technical on the Penn State bench this season after arguing a flagrant foul called on Tim Frazier for elbowing Aaron Craft, even though he attempted to clear space with what I thought looked like a legal move. Apparently not. It wasn't a malicious attempt or whatever by Frazier, but the announcers claimed the call was justified. I really hate that rule as it handicaps the offensive player. Credit Craft for playing fearless, aggressive defense and for willing to stick his nose in there, but I just don't understand how the offensive player is suppose to counter in that position.

Looking ahead, PSU finally has a 'bye' during the conference season and has the weekend off. I'd imagine Chambers will give the guys off tomorrow before they start preparing for Wisconsin next Tuesday night at home. Wisconsin has hit their stride after a slow start to conference play. We all know DeChellis' history against the Badgers, but we'll see what Chambers has in store for Bo Ryan.

Every Penn State player has retroactively fouled out of the Ohio State game.
That's some strong Haterade you're drinking.

(Ha ha I am calling you a hater with that Haterade pun. Get it?)

Anyway, I was in attendance last night, and I was impressed by Penn State’s ball-handling. Even though PSU didn’t get many good shots in the first half they didn’t make any huge mistakes on offense or have any major breakdowns on defense, and they limited opportunities in transition: most importantly, they did a really good job of avoiding turnovers. Chambers said after the game that Ohio State got them out of rhythm & sped up the tempo, which would explain the bad shot selection.

I saw a team with a good foundation. If Chambers can get more talent to come to Penn State, maybe he’ll end up with an NCAA team eventually.

We need a team that can put the ball in the hoop.

I know that sounds kind of ridiculous. That said, this team does the little things right more often than not. They hustle, they share the ball, they get out in transition when they can and they don’t make too many stupid mistakes. What they don’t have is consistent scoring threat outside of Tim Frazier. It’d be nice to have a stone cold shooter or two, or at least someone who can hit a jumper with some regularity. They’re far too inefficient. When they have an average shooting night, they’re mostly competitive.

The team is fun to watch. Hopefully we can be more competitive over the next several years. Congrats to the Buckeyes. That’s a terrific team right there.

Pretty much this
Doesn't sound ridiculous at all

It’s pretty much our problem in a nutshell.

Last Night

I actually saw some good looks but the shots just didn’t fall. Some even missed the rim altogether, and that’s got to change. We need more consistancy from the midrange especially when the team strugles from three.

Also, I have noticed that the bigs are having trouble finishing at the rim. In the past couple of games Graham has been caught shuffiling his feet at the block and called for travelling. He’s also missed a couple of bunnys. Same goes for Sasa, getting blocked last night and missing close in. That’s got to change.

All the work that goes in to getting the ball close is for naught if they cannot finish at the rim. You establish that threat and the outside opens up and vice versa. Scoring is simply a matter of execution – finish at the rim – drain the open jumper.

You could say it’s a lack of talent or a lack of experience (ie. repetition) or just lack of confidence. If they can find a way to get over this scoring challenge, they will be a formidable squad on any floor.

The defensive intensity and defensive smarts is there, albiet somewhat plagued by foul trouble and lack of depth, but the offense has to got improve. Kinda reminds me of the football team.

This sums up the entire 2nd half of the Indiana game too

I thought the play was actually pretty close; Indiana just made shots and PSU did not

We're leaving a lot of points...

…at the charity stripe too.
Glover missing four in a row.
Man, that was ugly.

Free points gentlemen, free points, c’mon man !

OSU was the better team and playing at home

Let me be clear on that first. And I saw very few foul calls or no calls that, in a vacuum, were bad.

But the disparity between what constituted a foul for Frazier vs. what constituted a foul for Craft, and the same for Graham / Borovnjak vs. Sullinger, was the difference between this being a 10-15 point loss and a blowout loss.

Can't get open

The team needs city kids who have learned how to play one-on-one bball. Defense and team play can be taught, but it takes more than 3-4 years of playing college ball to develop into a shooter. Chambers knows this. It is just a question of recruiting them.

Is it against NCAA rules for the men's and women's coachses to corroborate?

After watching the Lady Lions fall at MSU today I notice they are the exact opposite of the men. They can score but cannot defend. The men can defend but cannot score. Wouldn’t it be interesting if PC could teach the ladies to defend and Coquise teach the men to score?
