A little late on this, but here's an open thread for those of you watching at home or online. The memorial service is available a number of places online, including BigTenNetwork.com and ESPN 3, and televised on the Big Ten Network. Feel free to add more links and locations in the comments.

FYI, there's a player from each of Joe's six decades speaking today.
It's on

WPVI.com (6abc in Philly)

DVR'ing on WYOU from NEPA

so I don’t have to listen to ESPN

is Debbie Dunleavy there?
No, but David Decosmo is.
jimmy cefalo is speaking

he is from scranton i think. I wonder if WYOU will have GMac doing a dance in the corner of the screen while cefalo speaks to blow everyone in Scranton’s mind.

Pittston is where he's from.
potayto potahto
not really

Pittston is “down the line” from Scranton

true

but its like 10 miles away. 2 towns over, Scranton, Old Forge, Duryea BOOM Pittston.

its down da line, but not as far as say edwardsville

Yeah,

but Pittston and Scranton are worlds apart in many ways. I’ve known people from both to have never been to either.

Pittston is WAY more Italian than Scranton.

is that a plus or minus?
Scranton is more Irish

you decide

and more...

German and Polish.

Ukranian!
its a real melting pot heyna?

I wish I could find a online recording of “The Heyna Family” that Daniels & Webster from Rock 107 did

close the light!

SORE TROAT!

I know people who think that going to Wilkes Barre is a day long ordeal
You forgot..

Moosic.

you can skip moosic, everyone else does!

Hoooo That joke would KILL in Taylor

Skate-Away on Tay-lor Hill!
isnt it a wal mart now
I just drove past a couple weeks ago

We went to Revello’s. I didn’t even pay attention

Damn...

I need me some real Pizza. Pizza in Philly area is meh.

TRUE

also wings in philly suck.

Wow, what a bunch of sad pandas

try living in Virginia. It took me 10 years to find a decent pizza and the best wings I can get are BW3. Ay caramba.

Don’t get me started about the lousy bread.

Fact: VA wings are shit.

First down in Ballston

Has good ones. AYCE variety, too. But if you’re going for quality over quantity then, well, I just can’t relate to you.

cannot lie

Philly has great bread. its why they have best hoagies

So true

so much good bread…..so little time.

Atlantic City bread

tops Philly’s. You can put anything on that and it’s a great hoagie.

Speaking of Old Forge and bread...

Agostini’s Bakery! And if you’re talking hoagies there’s nothing like Catalano’s in Wessside (west Scranton for the non-locals) home of Mr. Moxie. I go into that place and look around expecting to see Uncle Junior and some of his buddies hanging out.

I'm more of a South Scranton

guy.

My grandparents lived there...

S. Webster Avenue

my grandparents..

lived on Beech. My uncle lives on Hickory

woo South Side!
Hit up Velocity 5

The one in Merrifield has some solid boneless wings.

A doctor here in VA

told me why the bread here sucks (doc is from Bucks Co)…it’s the difference in the glutens found in the water. So it effects alot more than just the bread, but the bread is what I mostly miss…..not a real hoagie to be found here because of it.

Walmart's across the street.

I always thought those caves on the cliff just below Skateaway on Taylor Hill looked like a cool place to hang out when I was a kid.

What about Dunmore? Or Duryea? Or Old Forge?

/naming off towns I remember hearing of on WNEP newscasts, growing up

Dunmore is straight up ITALIAN

as is Old Forge. Not sure about Duryea

mixed Italian and Irish, I think.
Duryea native here.

Sacred Heart was the church for the ethnic Germans, Holy Rosary for the Polish, and St. Johns for the Lithuanians. There weren’t as many Irish and Italians in Duryea but we were sandwiched in by the Italians in Old Forge, Taylor, Pittston and West Pittston.

Duryea funnels into Pittston Area High School home of Jimmy Cefalo class of 1975. His jersey hangs in the school trophy case if I remeber correctly.

actually Cefalo was 1973 I believe
And of course don't forget Avoca which was predominantly Irish.
Much like...

Minooka.

I went to WA.
Me too...

What year?
1987 here.

I would have..

been in the class of 98. I moved, prior to my senior year, to Allentown.

PAHS '85

We had a great battle of undefeated track teams with you guys my senior year. PA-WA is the best rivalry in the area I think, though Riverside-OF fans may disagree.

Dunmore played Pryor for state championship

didnt work out very well

i should say they played jeanette

with Pryor.. and Jordan Hall

How do you like your deer meat

Dun-More!
Dun-More!

haha the hamburgler?
To me, it will always be WDAU.
How the hell did I miss the NePA chat?

Jimmy Cefalo FTW.

The Cefalo Law Firm. The people’s law firm. And we like it that way.

I loved his story on Joe saying...

that his mother’s pasta sauce was better than Mrs. Capeletti’s!

NEPA Italians can..

cook.

There's a tiny, poorly advertised, nondescript restaurant in

Luzerne, PA called Andy Perugino’s. It’s worth your time and dime.

I ate there when I was younger...

I remember it being very good.

Big Ten Network

Will re-air the service at 10pm.

For any of those that might have rushed out the door this morning, only to forget to record this afternoons service.

Its being broadcast on BTN, right?

cause if what I recorded is actually the Purdue basketball game, I’ll be pissed.

yes, it's on

but it’s gonna run long

luckily with Direct TV

I can extend the recording from my phone app.

They only have blocked off for an hour

Until 3:00. Zero chance they are done at 3:00, probably 4:00.

well the initial game I had it set for was 2 hours anyway

so hopefully that still recorded even though they changed the guide afterwards. If not I’ll just watch it at 10 tonight since I have tomorrow off.

This must be tough for the girl

but she is doing well.

Yeah,

she made it through that touch part pretty well.

Also on ESPN3.

Which was said above. My bad.

Penn State Way = Paterno Way

Paterno Way IS the Standard!!

Charile Pittman did great.

“Rest in Peach Coach. We’ll take it from here.”

He was really good.
I loved how he made Tony stand up.
Really hope the letterman start something big

to carry on what Joe started. Something we can all be a part of.

Nice job by Charlie Pittman there.
Nice speech by Charlie Pittman.
This open cubicle is getting quite dusty.
That video got me dusty at the 400th win.
Yeah, is this one a re-run?
I think all but the end was.
Was it the "Father and Friend" one?

That’s my ringtone for when my pop calls me.

Also, my favorite Joe related video ever.

HBeach just got a mention by

1st Paternoville Mayor.

Jeff's a great guy. He was very surprised to get the call from Guido to speak at this event.
Never met him personally but saw him many times waiting to get into Beaver Stadium

That was a special group and special season so glad I was there. First fall football season was 2003.

I missed that

Damn

I did too.

I’m going to have to go back to that part later.

The mix of speakers

is really appropriate. Young, old, football, academic, black, white, male, female. He made a difference to everyone.

Yes...

there was no black or white for Paterno, just the person.

Phil Knight?
We've been in business with those people for 30 years.

Maybe more.

Yeah makes sense. Just seemed odd to me at first.

I’m waiting for his, “this one time at band camp” story.

Phil Knight looks like

Michael Caine and Dr. House merged

that’s pretty spot on

Just out of curiosity, did JS show up to any of the events?

Just to reinforce my suspicions that the man simply cannot stay away from PSU

Isn't he under house arrest?
I wish he were underground.
Yeah, but I can see him getting out of it for the funeral
Correct

Legally JS cannot leave his house. The better question to ask is if Curley or Schultz attended any of the events.

Curley was there from what I've heard

he was a long-time family friend of the Paterno’s and I don’t doubt that it was important to him to attend this event. I also don’t think the family looks at him as a major villain.

This

Curley rode the blue bus with the family – seems they’re satisfied with his actions.

Anyone see Spanier on the family bus? No?

Anyone see Spanier there??
OMG NEUHEUSEL MENTION

he’s coming to Penn State

This must confirm it.
Nah...

But Urban Meyer is wearing a blue tie.

wonder if hell be sleeping at his home in boalsburg
By the way

My seats had a great view of Urban’s face for the whole thing. Dude is a robot. He clapped most of the time during standing ovations, but for long portions of speeches he was scrolling his phone it looked like.

It’s funny, because from what I’ve heard, he really liked Joe. And there were a lot of lessons about family that I can’t imagine would have been lost on him…

osu and family

Apparently an osu asst coach tweeted he hasn’t seen his kids in 33 days because he wants to get the recruiting class all set. Timm from VBR retweeted it I believe.
/priority failure

I've always said

he was a complete douchea. Guess he proved that today to others.

Yeah

I really don’t know what Joe saw in him. Seems like a complete snake.

Joe liked pretty much everyone, I think

well, almost everyone

(coughswitzershirrelmediahackscough)

Jay's wife?

Not bad…….

How many children?
Not sure..

and assuming that she is his wife.

yes, that is Kelly Paterno, Jay's wife
Jay has four or five I think
they are a fertile family

old-school Catholic

six i believe....
Phil Knight...

looks like he just got off a rocket plan fueled by narcotics.

I like the way he’s speaking though.

in his head hes thinking

he now can slip those shitty uniforms every other school thinks is cool under our noses and get us wearing them

Wow

Look at Phil Knight go.

WHOA
Whoa is right.
WHOA

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I heard this. My mouth dropped open, and then I almost leapt up out of my office chair to cheer! Mr. Knight, with your speech today you earned my complete respect and admiration! It was so refreshing to hear someone finally have the gonads to say that!

Phil Knight bringing down the house.

Holy Shit.

Phil Knight just ruined Tim Curley and Spanier.

Way to go, Knight!
THAT

was awesome. Phil Knight may have bigger balls than Joe.

He's even railing on Penn State.
Phil Knight has brass balls.

I like it.

WOW

Did not expect that. Least of all from someone who isn’t a “Penn State guy.”

Awesome

WOW!!

Nike is my new favorite brand!! Wow! WTG Phil Knight!

As if I needed another reason to love Nike.
Oregon has the second best uniforms in college football.
whoa whoa whoa

Let’s not go to far in Knight praise!

I felt dirty after I typed it

I still hate them. But that was excellent.

I think I may go out

and buy a pair of Nikes this evening. Color choice: black.

You've gotta go navy blue.

Can’t go wrong with either.

He has watermelons for balls
DAMNNNNNN PHIL!

THAT, my friends.. is how it’s done

/goes to buy all things nike

Phil Knight is kicking ass.

I think I know what my favorite brand of sneakers are.

Who would have thought...

The mastermind behind Oregon’s “pro-combat” uniforms…

would move me to tears with his exemplary respect for Paterno.

Well done, Mr. Knight. Well ****ing done.

When you are..

pajama rich, you can do that.

Or if you just always wear pajamas

Always.

So what's this Phil Knight business?

Some of us have jobs.

This.

The No-Fun Police (IT) have decreed that streaming media is a no-no.

Try being on an aircard on client site

Will have to watch it later tonight on BTN.

same here

But can’t wait to watch. Heard Todd Blackledge’s comments on The Fan.

In Part he said:

He’s been my hero for 12 of the past 12 years…

If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in the investigation, no in Joe Paterno’s response.

That old hero, he set a standard that will live forever.

It leads me to question, Who is the real trustee at Penn State University.

Watching on my iphone...

with my buddie’s BTN log in.

Suck it BTN – that’s right my f-ing cable company doesn’t carry the BTN but I know people who get it on DirectTV. Thanks for BTN2Go.

in short he took a hot iron poker to the BOT and brought down the house
He went there.

He called out the media (ESPN mostly) and the board of trustees for vilifying Paterno.

He just went HAM

Is how I’d sum it up in a nutshell.

and the people in attendance gave TWO standing ovations
Phil Knight

said what every PSU fan and supporter of JoePa has wanted an outlet to say for months.

So we have what, 3 hours until someone burns a pair of Air Jordans and demands Nike be boycotted for enabling pederasty?
nah

they’ll just add pederasty to child labor and keep burning. But why they’re burning the shoes all those little kids worked so hard to make, I’ll never understand.

Malaysian children are actively laboring to enable rapists of American children.

A xenophobe’s wet dream worst nightmare!

i think we should take out the prime minister of malaysia

I'm pretty sure that they've made huge strides in recent years with regards to child labor.
already saw a Tweet that said something about child labor
Can't wait to see the talking heads on CNBC

trying to figure out why Nike had a huge uptick in sales in PA.

He finished by saying, "Who was the real trustee of Penn State?"
Cefelo

Is doing a good job too. Great stories.

This whole thing has been great.

Incredibly tear-jerking, but great.

Jimmy Cefalo...

Is doing a fantastic job bringing to life Paterno the man, the grand scientist, the molder of men.

Every speaker has been really good so far

So many contrasting styles, yet the message is consistent and strong.

Aw, Franny Fisher sighting!

I love the old footages
So far this is great...

I can’t believe they put it together in just 4 days.

The old archival footage is amazing.
I think most of it has been ready longer than that
Phil Knight just took care of business

I don’t think I’ll ever root against Oregon again.

So how'd they decide who spoke for what decade?

There had to be a lot of requests/volunteers

I believe the family asked
MICHAEL ROBINSON

Hell YES!

I Hope He Coaches at State State Someday

He is a fine example of the legacy that Coach created. We need him and others who played under Coach to be coaching here. I have nothing but support for Coach O’Brien, and wish him well-he has an amazingly tough act to follow-but somehow I wish those who were forged in Coaches crucible were at the helm…

What a great person MROB is

Proud he is a graduate of our university.

Before today, I wasn't a fan of the Nike logos all over the JoePa statue

Now? I can’t think of anything more appropriate.

I think Phil Knight earned a few lifelong customers today.

As an aside...

this summer we need a thread developing and debating the PSU all 60’s team, 70’s team, 80’s team, 90’s team, and 00’s team.

That sounds like fun.
Well it is the off-season now...

Did I miss the 80s?

Blackledge started it off
Not sure.

If you did, I did too.

Blackledge covered the 80s.
in many ways

we all miss the 80s…

Duran Duran fan?
That was the first concert

I ever went to!

My first was INXS.
Since you're in VA, you'll appreciate it.

Duran Duran at the Hampton Coliseum in 1984.

Good venue.
In 1984 it may have been,

in 2012 The Hampton Coliseum is a dump (hell, it was a dump 10 years ago). Same goes for the Richmond coliseum and the Norfolk Scope.

It's a fun venue.

Not everything has to be brand new.

I don't know how great it was then,

but it was a fun first concert.

It's like Phish's favorite venue.

Mostly because it’s small, general admission, and they have pretty lax security. They always play awesome shows there. It’s like a right of passage for a Phish Phan to see a show there.

It did look nice lit up on that cover.

Having an altered state of mind certainly helps.

Going to the icecapades, circus and train shows with a bunch of kids does not. Maybe that’s the answer, being lit up.

I was there for the reunion show in 2009

That was going to be a fun show no matter where it was played, but it was a really great show.

Thomas Dolby
did you know he invented ringtones

and is now like a billionaire from it.

I didn't think it was possible

to be a bigger fan of Mike Robinson than I already was.

What a great representative of the Pennsylvania State University.

Mauti is so well spoken.

I think he will be another fine representative of PSU.

His dad was interviewed on ESPN

after Joe was fired and he was great. A chip off the old block!

If he stays healthy

I think he is our next All-American. Maybe Bednarik winner.

Fortunately

He doesn’t have any more ACLs to tear

Shhh...

Don’t taunt the evil ACL-eating monster.

Well kid?

What’s it gonna be?

Somewhere Kerry Collins and Anthony Fera

are pouring one out for Joe

Actually,

I hope Fera is in the audience with the rest of the team.

Fera is probably at the service

He may be drinking from the flask though

i was just joking

i hope they are both there

I love the Tamba smash.

Jay...

Tear overload incoming…

Oh wow Jay is speaking after speaking yesterday at the funeral.

Actually

He was the only Paterno child not to speak yesterday, from what I read.

Oh okay, makes sense that he saved his speech for today

The back-in-the-day Joe stories

get me every freakin’ time.

I love that he just brought up the Herbstritt story. He was my friend’s cousin. They were SO thankful for all of Joe’s help.

Jay is doing a great job.
Jay

is doing an amazing job honoring his father. What a testimony to see the kind of kids that Joe molded every day away from the football field.

Does it look like this is going to last more than another 15 minutes?

I set my DVR to record until 4:30 (since it was only supposed to last until 4) and I’m worried that I should extend it some more.

Looks like it should be done in 15 minutes.

But that’s assuming Jay is last.

It's over.

Ended at 4:21PM Eastern.

B1G Network is doing so post-segment work from the studio, but it isn’t from the Bryce-Jordan center.

But then it was at BJC with more interviews of players and Steve Jones.
Can't even listen.

Not at work.

I'm glad I'm in a secluded-ish cube

Because the end of that just destroyed me. Holy cow.

I'm glad I have an office with a door.
Even the guy from the BTN

has obviously been crying.

Revsine looks like he's been crying
I noticed that during the pre-memorial too

Very touching Mr. Revsine.

Phil Knight quotes defending Paterno

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/football/ncaa/01/26/phil-knight-joe-paterno.ap/index.html

For those who missed it and won’t be able to see it until later.

I'm going to

go buy some Nikes now.

That is not an accurate recitation of what Phil Knight said.

Not at all. Not even close. Not even in the same zip code.

You expected journalistic integrity?
I know most hate Deadspin but they have a word-for-word transcript and video of it

http://deadspin.com/5879688/heres-video-and-a-transcript-of-nike-chairman-phil-knights-vehement-defense-of-joe-paterno

Gawd, I love the Internet

/bypasses SI, digs into the deadspin transcript.

I swear to god

There is an article underneath that titled “By dying, Joe Paterno is still protecting Penn State”.

60% of the time

Deadspin sucks all the time

Its really only 60%?
Since Katie Baker...

left the only worthy read on there is Magary.

Magary is hit our miss..

does he still write his weekly column of fart jokes and mailed-in frat boy stories?

Yeah

Those posts are getting quite old by now. His weekly NFL posts are excellent but that’s about it.

of course..

He’s a good writer, even if it is locker room humor. He wrote some stuff about the PSU think that actually was well thought out.

I also enjoy when he talks about the ups and downs of being a parent.

When he's writing he's good. When he's a letter aggregator he's a letter aggregator.
there's at least 3-5 posts a day about how horrible PSU is

EVERY. DAY.

Is it related to the fact that his GJ testimony is inadmissible?

I'm not going to lie.

I didn’t really read it. But I think so.

Yeah

Because not being available to testify something that could, potentially, hurt two individuals in a criminal trial is protecting Penn State. Leaving aside that they would never be convicted of perjury whether Paterno testified or not, that is so horribly devised and so poorly considered that it shocks me that it can even be published on an alternative blog.

Like a Pearl Jam fansite or somesuch?
duh

of course Joe got cancer and died on purpose so the real truth wouldnt come out.

/killsmyselfafterrealizingthesheerstupidityofmankind

Did Joe fake his own death?

I’m off to Vegas to see if I can have a JoePa siting!

Closed casket.

Start the rumors.

That wasn't really him in the WaPo interview.

It was a double they used to make him look sickly.

He stole body double idea

from his buddy Saddam Hussien. They regularly spoke about how to have an Evil Impact.

Only after they got a Muslim terrorist elected president.

Once the truth about Obama comes out, it will ensure the dominance of the Republican party for decades. Something about Osama bin Laden as well.

Keep in mind

President Obama did tell Sue to keep up the work. Coincidence?

Didn't Jay vote for Obama?

Coincidence?

And campaigned for him, I think.
A great deal actually
Is this why they buried the casket in a different cemetary?

To eliminate any evidence that he was not actually in the casket?

and with that

you’ve created an internet rumor, my friend.

just read it

that’s what F.U. money will do

wow

Oooh. Good find.

Thank you kindly.

Their "transcript" is full of errors though
The lead up was the most important part
Spider just walked by.

Has it been confirmed that he has been kept on as equipment manager? Geeze, I hope so.

Ki-Jana, what will you take away from this service.

Besides another torn ACL?

Does anyone have a link where it was replayed online?

My cable doesn’t have BTN and I am trying to find a replay.

BTN.com has it archived

BTN2GO or some shit.

thank you
and your welcome.

although. the link i just gave you is a direct link to where you can watch it.

that one's perfect. thanks.
anyone else

Finishing a bottle of old granddad…or any other bourbon…after all this?

I sat by myself, on a barstool in my kitchen, and...

… cried, laughed, cheered and cursed. Not going to lie, I drank a few G&T’s.

JoePa got the last word. It is up to all of us now. Now I get it. I can move forward.

i will drink at some point tonight
I've been annoyingly out of bourbon

But I’ve never had a bottle of Doublewood disappear as fast as it has this week.

I have been

a rum drinker for about 5-10 years, until I found out Joe loved Old Granddad. Now I’ve come to the conclusion that the PSU Man Cave will always have two bottles of OG Bourbon, one full on deck, and the one I am drinking out of…for Joe….as his cutout sits in the best corner seat by the bar facing the TV to watch the Nittany Lions every fall Saturday.

Having a bit of a wake with my friends this weekend for joe

Drinks will be drank.

Finished mine Tuesday.

Need a break.

Damn

Watching a second time, so many things to take but:

“The legend…of Joe Paterno, lies in each one of us”

If somebody had to miss the service, try to get a full transcript video.

You need it ALL to get the best flavor – sound bites won’t quite do it justice.

My usual tear limit for something good is 2 handkerchiefs. This one was a 3.

I'm pretty sure

every time I watch it I’ll cry, and I think this should be a mandatory watch on Football Eve for anyone who bleeds Blue and White

Phil Knight

PPhil Knight rocked!!!!

His comments and meaning is all over the web

Such a privilege to be able to attend JoePa's memorial today.

I don’t think I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster like that in quite some time. To see just a glimpse of some the truly inspirational moments Joe has provided throughout his career was truly moving. From more of the inspirational commentary provided by Todd Blackledge, Charlie Pittman, Jimmy Cefalo and Michael Robinson, to a downright ballsy speech by Phil Knight and to cap it off with the heartfelt words by Jay Paterno, this memorial ran the whole gambit. I came away with even greater respect for a man that I couldn’t possibly have respected more. If the entirety of one person’s life like Joseph Vincent Paterno does not inspire you to “make an impact,” I don’t know what else can.

I've gotta be honest...

… I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch this.

I love knowing that so much of the good people in the Penn State community were there today. I love knowing that there is so much love for Joe, Sue, and what the name Paterno has meant for Penn State.

But I just don’t know if I can watch this and not break down.

Watch it?

I can’t read TWITTER UPDATES and not break down. I’m going to record it, and watch it when I can.

It's acceptable in this case to break down,

even if you’re a big, strong man. You will eventually regret it if you DON’T watch it.

I watched it.

The best of Penn State was on display.

For those interested in purchasing the memorial:

http://wearecentralpa.com/fulltext?nxd_id=339792

They are $25, proceeds go to THON.

Watching the whole thing now

Some of his grandchildren look too young to even understand. What a beautiful family.

That's the sad thing, though.

I saw one of Jay’s kids – looked like they didn’t want to be there. Someday, they’ll be able to watch this and they’ll understand what their granddad meant to so many.

They were still

very well behaved. My 3 year old niece pitched a fit at my grandfather’s funeral. She didn’t know any better and was a handful.

I was fortunate to get tickets...

and the atmosphere was amazing. The speeches were incredible, and the fact that each of the 10 speakers spoke about Paterno, and not one of them pertained to football, and not one of them were remotely similar in context is such a testament to Joe and the life that he lived. Phil Knight’s standing O was only outdone by the one SuePa received upon entering the arena. Saying the Lord’s Prayer at the end was very emotional, I regret not taking tissues, I was in tears the whole time. A once in a lifetime experience that I’ll never forget.

I’m sorry for the fragments of sentences, there’s so much in my head that I want to get out, and can’t type as fast as I think.

I was ther too.

I loved every speaker they had. I read earlier on FB that the BOT got a big middle finger in the shape of a swoosh! I was very surprised with the amount of empty seats. Don’t know if that shows on TV but it was shocking. My tickets that I got on line where up graded to the floor. I got to sit about three rows behind the players.
I will never buy anything but nikes now thats for sure. The videos where soooo damn emotional especially the one that they had for Joes400th.
God bless sue and her family for sharing JoePa with us. I never really thought about it in that way but it was a common thread with the past players.

i too was surprised at the empty seats

at first my buddy and I thought they were reserved for someone, but it became evident that they weren’t anything but empty. Thats interesting that your tickets got upgraded…i was in section 114 (head on to the stage)

I was in 202 behind the stage and a usher came and gave our whole section floor tickets.

It was bad up there! The sign on my floor seats said intercollegiate athletes. So I think thoes empty seats where reserved for other sports teams

I noticed the intercollegiate athletes sign as well

I wonder why some of them didn’t show. I know for a fact that the Hockey team was on their way to Ohio since I saw them at the Ice Pavilion while buying tickets for next weekend’s game (Got a chance to meet Guy Gadowsky, pretty cool). Kinda disheartening so many empty seats when there were plenty of people looking for tickets

They didn't show

because they were being sold on ebay, maybe?

How were your seats upgraded?

My girlfriend and I were sitting in 218 and right as they were starting the ceremony, an usher came up to me and asked if we wanted to take floor seats. We ended up a couple rows from the back. Very lucky.

Same way but earlier. We sat a couple of rows from you by the sounds of it.

Once on the floor you could sit where ever you wanted. They told me family up front or fill in where I wanted to. I am not a duechbag so I gladly took a empty seat near the middle toward the back. Walked out with Coach Vandy.

Small world

I followed him up the stairs on the way out

Then you walked right with me too...

Funny

Managed to spot a number of coaches on the way out

Saw Chambers and Bradley as well. Funniest thing was overhearing a guy speaking with the guy from ESPN telling him that their recent coverage has been much better than other media outlets. Can’t remember the ESPN guy’s name right now, but his response was something along the lines of “there’ve been some varying reports, but we’ve been trying our best”

I saw McQueary on the way out

made eye contact, nodded. To say this has taken an enormous toll on him would be an understatement.

I thought the same thing

In the pictures I saw of him from the viewing.

He looks like he lost about 25 pounds.
I read a post on a different board that he had the face of. Tortured soul.

Was pretty dead on description.

I am so proud to call myself a Penn Stater.

The entire memorial was perfectly done with Phil Knight and Jay Paterno leading the way. I am so thankful for Phil Knight saying what every Penn Stater has been feeling for the past 3 months. The incredible spirit of Joe Paterno was on hand for the entire ceremony, and it will continue for many many years to come. It is my hope that Jay Paterno stays with Penn State in some capacity. Wouldn’t it been fitting, I don’t know that it is possible, for Jay to be elected to the Board of Trustees. Whether he would want to do it remains to be seen, but it would be something to behold. I am so thankful for Joe, Sue, and the entire Paterno family. The strength and courage that they have shown has beem amazing to see.
We as Penn Staters can carry on JoePa’s spirit, so our chilldren, grandchildred, and so on can have the values that we were so lucky to see firsthand. God Bless all of you. WE ARE!

This week has been something

Grief, mourning, acceptance, remembrance, and love. I’ve gone through so many emotions in the last few days, and I never even met Joe, it really speaks to who he was and what he represented. From barely being able to speak to my father through the tears when he called me Sunday hours after the world found out just to ask how I was doing to now, watching some of these speeches from the memorial several times over and over again, not with sadness anymore, but with immense pride in having had Joe in some capacity in my life. Also pride in my fellow Penn Staters in the fitting tribute to Joe’s life this week has been. From the three or four people gathered around the Paterno statue at 2:30am early Wednesday morning when I dropped by on my way in after work in DC, to the hundreds already in line for the viewing just a few hours later at 7:30 before the gates even opened to the thousands upon thousands who lined the streets to wave one final goodbye to the man who loved us all so much and finally to the packed BJC where a player from each decade spent little time talking about Joe the coach, but rather Joe the person and how much he cared about each of them and their lives. After all of this, I think I’m mentally prepared to move on to a world without Joe here in the physical sense, because I know after everything I’ve seen this week that there is no way his spirit can ever die with the many thousands of people he has touched in his decades of service to humanity ready to carry his torch. After being back at Penn State I was reminded that there is nothing like it in the world and I’m OK being a part of the crazy cult that I affectionately refer to as “Paternoism”.

Watching the replay on ESPN3

this is going to be rough.

ummmmm,

just a reminder: JOE PATERNO ENABELED CHILD RAPE. AS IN, BOYS WERE RAPED. RAPE, as in RAPE. not a saint, but a CHILD RAPE ENABALER. you people are the worst. this place is a fucking cult. When Cardinal Law dies, will people have the same reaction? Well, I guess he didn’t win a bunch of football games, though. morons

fucking prick
my appologies

for the language there, I’m a little emotional right now and this troll douche made me lose it mommentarily

Is that you, Bastin Tahmmy?

How do you feel about the fackin dahkies?

Asshole.

P.S. Fun story.

Though semi-distant descendants, I am related to Cardinal Law.

Man. Penn State fan and related to Law. I am so a child rape condoner.

I am a distant relative of the British Monarchy.

So, you know… Britain must support child rape.

We may be distantly related :o)
Main - would those be your antecedents (or are your children precocious)?
Yeah, antecedents.

Not my descendants or issue. :)

RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE

If raping is wrong, I don’t wanna be right!

Rape Cult Assemble

You continue to entertain me.
Shit.

I thought this was the rapping cult.

Fo sho now I’m lost.

You need to find a new site, I guess.

JUST KIDDING!

I've noticed a lot of this lately...

… so many places where people seem to measure their own self-worth by denigrating others with hatred and ignorance.

I would completely fear for the future of humanity, but I know that Penn State continues to follow the Paterno Way and produce good people.

Another great video of joe:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_gZLvYTijw

The memorial was incredibly touching. All the speakers were wonderful. I love my Penn State community. I love Sue. I have the utmost respect for Jay to deliver a powerful speech during such an emotional time.

Joe Paterno will always be my hero. And, even though I’m only in my 20’s, he will be a role model for my children, and my children’s children, and so it goes.

Mr. Knight for BOT??

"I worked at Nike for 48 years, and some might call me a short-timer."
Wow, Fortt.

This isn’t a damn opera, you can clap.

And I did!!!

I have been stricken with grief. I work at a NYC financial institution and on monday wearing a PSU sweatshirt at work was told by a douchbag that my shirt was “very appropriate” I promptly told him that it was no accident and went about my work.

I dont know how to continue….. so many memories, so many thoughts…. I’ve been posting here for years…. but cared for longer…I’ve always felt like an outsider cuz i never went to Penn State, but always felt welcome cuz my post were well received.

like many of us I’m lost and am rambling…………Just know We are PENN STATE!!!!!

(PS - please feel free to reach out if you;’re in the nyc area)

I thought you were Fortt for a second.

You don’t have to go to Penn State to be a Lion.

FYI - it's spelled 'doucheabag' around these parts.
Was BoB there today?
No.

Silly Super Bowl to prep for. He’s coming back for the recruiting weekend tho.

Sorry

Didn’t know if he was there for a bit then left, or what. Actually forgot about the Super Bowl.

Pictures show him attending the viewing.
As I watch

the memorial service I, ….wait let me go back. Yesterday as I stood along Curtin Rd waiting, I glanced up and down the road at all the lives Joe has had an impact on. For as far as I could see WE stood. Now as I watch the memorial service I have to wince as I shake my head and say to the BOT, YOU FOOLS! What have you done! All of these lives that Joe had such a profound impact on will drown out any attempts to ever vilify him.
YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGIVEN.

A wonderful memorial, from start to finish

Phil Knight, Jay, and MRob might grab the headlines, and they were great, but I think my favorite eulogies came from the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Chris Marrone. And my favorite line of the night: “We’ll take it from here.”

Yup

Cefalo and Blackledge the polished tv pros, the goodnatured “jocks” mrob and mauti….but The Dean and Chris were very real life. Very impressive. I was so proud of Chris.

And Kenny Jackson. Purely heartfelt

And the two students

The Paterno Fellow and the Mayor of Paternoville gave great prospective of being just normal students at Penn State and what impact Joe had on us as well even tho we might have only passed him or spoke to him once or twice.

Why was the Big 10 Commisioner there ?

I think that takes some nerve to strip Joe’s name off the trophy months earlier saying they cannot have their trophy named after someone like that only to show up at the ceremony like he’s a friend of Joe Pa. It makes me sick I hate phoneys !!!!

Was BOB there ? I didn’t see Jack Ham either.

I think BOB was back in New England.

He was there for the first two days of events though.

Jack Ham was there.
BOB had another job commitment

and I think we can excuse him. He paid his respects, he spoke to the lettermen, I think we can excuse him if he watches this one on TV.

As for Delany, I’m glad he was there. It was something he needed to see.

I just cannot imaging the humiliation

that Joe must have felt when they stripped his name off that trophy. I hope Sue or another family member said something to him. He was never a big supporter of PSU, I believe he was one of the people who voted down PSU’s acceptance originally. I could be wrong though.

If you were paying attention yesterday

I don’t think he felt anything nearing humiliation. I really don’t. I don’t think having his name on a trophy would have struck him as all that important an issue in his last few months.

I did pay attention

I am not saying yesterday he felt that way, I am talking about when they 1st announced it then stripped it. I know Jay didn’t like it one bit and he said so, that is why they said if they one it they were going to tape a sign on it saying the JoePA trophy. I think it would have been nice to have a trophy named after you recognizing the Big 10 Champ would have been nice his grand kids would have liked hearing years from not Penn St is playing for the Paterno Trophy. I think Lombardi & his family enjoy his. Just a thought.

I agree with you that it would be a nice thing

for the Paterno family and many Penn State fans. I just disagreed that you framed it as humiliation. I think Joe wasn’t humiliated or bitter about any of that stuff, and that he understood that having affected and improved so many lives and done what he loved and accomplished so much, the honor of having a trophy named after him or not wasn’t something that would really tip the scales in either direction.

Paterno has a very true perspective of his life and accomplishments.

First and foremost was all the lives he’s improved for the better, both the players he coached and molded, to the students who were able to get a high quality education thanks to him. I think in his mind, having his name removed from the trophy, no matter when or how it happened, never even registered on his radar.

This rings true to me.

At his age and with his life, I rather think he was well past sweating the small and inconsequential.

Vinnie and Cooke on 93.7 The Fan aren't fans of Phil Knight

They feel he was grand-standing… the memorial wasn’t the time or place… he should have said this closer to Joe’s dismissal. I support Phil’s statements. In Pitt, its about 50/50 support and against.

I agree that this wasn’t the time or the place. But I loved it too much to really care about propriety. It only worked because it was Knight.

If the family had no problem with the time and the place

then I have no problem with the time and the place.

Maybe I'm a rube

But I don’t think Knight thought for one second about marketing or timing. I think he really, genuinely loved Joe and that Joe really was his hero. He was really hurt by everything that happened.

If we get to a point as a society where we question everyone’s motives any time they say anything they feel, that makes me kind of sad. Like I said, I can generally feel when someone is putting me on, but I’m not going to give sideways glances when I see someone who is hurting and who has lost their hero go on to say strong things.

It was not marketing

The Paternos wouldn’t have included them if they thought that was about Nike.

Besides, Phil Knight has nothing left to prove. He’s in the late “I can say what I want to” phase of his career.

Agreed.

I like how Nike released a statement that it remains genuinely concerned about the allegations. We all are. But Phil Knight could give the OHDWM with impunity.

I like the line.

I worked here 48 years and I’ve never gotten a promotion.

And he's a short timer!
Maybe I’m a rube

You’re from Ebensburg, are you not?

I grew up a literal stone's throw

from the county fairgrounds. We would sneak in and make fake handstamps. The real rubes came in from out of town.

So awesome

I was there. It will go down as one of the most affecting experiences of my life. There are so many things I could say, but I still want to think about it all.

As for Phil Knight, I’m a Nike man forever now as long as he keeps the experimentation in Oregon. And I think he will. PSU’s simple look sells well for them.

It was a real “I’m Keith Hernandez!” moment, wasn’t it?

Everyone, thank you for your comments! It has been a pleasure. The one thing that has not yet been said is this…

I was sitting there watching the media (camera men, writers, reporters, etc). Most looked completely disinterested. I kept wondering if they felt surrounded. If they finally felt how we felt… Surrounded by people who had absolutely no respect for them. I wondered just how miserable they were to be sitting there in our world. I wondered if they were beginning to understand. And as someone said above, I eventually felt sorry for them, because they don’t get it. Because they have never been a part of something like our family, to know what it is like to be a part of something infinitely greater than we will ever be on our own. If they had, their story would have been very different.

Because they have never been a part of something like our family, to know what it is like to be a part of something infinitely greater than we will ever be on our own.

It is hard for many people to conceive of what we’re feeling. If you aren’t a part of it or something very similar, you have no frame of reference. For alumni and fans of many other schools, it’s about coming together to cheer their football team on Saturdays. If that were all it were about for Penn State, I’d agree that this would all seem pretty weird. But it’s not, not by a longshot, and most cannot conceive of the very real, far-reaching connection many of us have.

I felt what I felt yesterday at THON. It stays with you. From the outside it seems backwards and insular, and that’s really unfortunate, because it’s one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences of my life.

Speaking of THON

Is anyone going up this year? I can’t wait.

My girlfriend is running the mountain-leg as a member of The Hope Express.

She danced as a senior in 2006 and is pretty pumped.

Good luck to her!

I know one of the members of the Hope Express…really impressed by the dedication.

I'm pretty sure that we know the same person. Initials MP?
Most of those people were just doing their jobs.

A cameraman is a professional, he can’t get emotional or caught up in the moment. That being said, the BTN guy who was there had clearly been crying.

Yeah, he was so sincere

I felt like at one point he was going to hug Daryll

This sentiment is going to seem weird and come out all wrong

But I sort of feel like that was the end of the game for me and Penn State Football. It’s over, we won. 2 National Championships, 5 undefeated seasons, victory in every major bowl, hundreds of young men prepared for life, hundreds of thousands inspired, now top 50 in rankings as a university. And the football part of it seems so insignificant, that I’m not feeling it as far as renewing my tickets. I’m more interested in seeing justice done to Sandusky, fixing the institutional problems that screwed up the investigation, supporting the new child abuse research efforts, and restoring the good name of the university such that somehow showing up next September and sitting in the stands seems pointless. Yesterday was the victory parade; what more is there to accomplish in Beaver Stadium? The game has ended, book closed, tie a ribbon on the football part of it.

I don’t know, can someone talk some sense into me?

The thing that sucked about the Memorial to Joe...

….is that Tony Pittman looks about 10 years younger than I do…

Jesus…..

I just watched the memorial

I didn’t see it mentioned earlier, so I would like to to express my appreciation for Kurtis Cleckner’s solo trumpet performance of “The Nittany Lion”. A very touching conclusion to an emotional memorial.

Yes, well done. I've always thought those single trumpeters to be amazing - breath control in time of stress.

“Taps” at funerals of service members is especially touching to me. I like to sing but can rarely croak out a piece in those kinds of situations.
