Meet the new boss in Columbus, who is quite different from the old boss. (Photo by Jamie Sabau/Getty Images)
With 2012 National Letter of Intent Day (a/k/a Signing Day) just two days away, we assembled a crack team of Big Ten recruiting analysts to take a look at the Class of 2012, early prospects in the Class of 2013, and any Signing Day theatrics that may be coming the Big Ten's way.
Joining me were Ace Anbender of mGoblog and Alex Gleitman of Eleven Warriors. Say what you will about their respective teams, it was a real pleasure to speak with these guys (though when the conversation finally got around to Urban Meyer stealing all of Penn State's doodz, I was admittedly a little miffed).

A couple of quick technical notes: this was my first time hosting, recording, editing, mixing and uploading a podcast. So any technical deficiency is attributable to me being a newb. Additionally, and as I told Ace and Alex before the recording, we hope to be able to do this again on a semi-regular basis, as well as adding some other Big Ten analysts. As we do more of them, hopefully the technical flaws will work themselves out.
Finally, this podcast was taped Saturday afternoon, so in it you'll hear me refer to Evan Schwan as an expected commitment once he gets his offer. Well, we know how that one turns out. Also, at one point when discussing Armani Reeves, I speculated that Reeves would pick Michigan. Well, I was wrong on that one.

I kind of hate meyer now
Aside from his Brett Favre-like retirement practices, raiding our cupboard with his “respect” for Paterno was just out of this world ridiculous. A good chunk of their 4 and 5 star recruits were PSU recruits. I realize some were going to leave anyways, but I can’t imagine all of them would have had Meyer not put the full court press on.
Full disclosure: At one time I wanted him as our next coach. We all make mistakes right?
irz813 - January 30, 2012
I'm right there with you.
Bob Sacamano - January 30, 2012
I dunno.
Ultimately it’s the recruit who decides. I can’t blame Meyer for recruiting the kids. That’s the way the recruiting game works. What’s he supposed to do, not try very hard with them??
Look at Rutgers. As soon as Schiano left many here immediately wanted PSU to “raid” their recruits. But to the credit of the Rutgers recruits they seem to be intent on sticking to their committment to the school (not a coach). I give those kids a lot of credit; some (certainly not all) of those who bailed on PSU I don’t think much of their character.
J Breezy - January 30, 2012
Spot on.
I hate that many of our former commits will be in Columbus, thanks to meyer’s recruitment. But I can’t blame him for playing the game. Your analogy to Rutgers is appropriate, in that as soon as that happened, every single PSU message board started speculating as to who we could poach.
And at the end of the day, the recruit is the one making a decision that will affect the rest of his life.
Jeff Junstrom - January 30, 2012
I'd like to think about it this way
A lot of these kids end up flipping coins at the end of the day, especially the highly recruited ones. They have so many choices in terms of offers and so few real, tangible, measurable means of differentiating schools (aside from schools that are committing NCAA violations while recruiting).
Just because you can kick a man while he’s down doesn’t mean you should.
irz813 - January 30, 2012
I dunno (again)...
I would like to think there are discernible differences between various schools. At least enough that they’re more than a “coin’s flip” difference.
I would hope a decision so important as what college to attend would not be dealt with so frivolously.
J Breezy - January 30, 2012
I coach HS football and you are 100% correct.
I was fortunate enough to have a player sign with Rutgers. I kid you not as soon as Schiano left the next day we had 9 text messages, 2 coaches came to the school, and 2 e-mails. I was amazed how quick the whole thing happened. I agree, I don’t like that we are losing all of our top recruits but you cannot blame Urban Meyer for being good at his job. Our coaching staff should have done a better job keeping our kids if anything and even that is hard to do. Kids just change their minds. It’s all about selling the University and your programs.
NJDeadhead - January 30, 2012
What amazes me is how so many kids seem to get attached to the position coach at a school.
I get that the position coach is the guy they’ll be spending the most time with, but he’s an assistant. And most assistants are looking to better themselves, be it a higher position at their current school or at another school. Either way, once they’re promoted they’re not your position coach anymore.
I agree…the school should be the main sell. And it’s what should be the most important factor to a recruit, too.
J Breezy - January 30, 2012
Kids look at it a little different
You are correct, I tell our kids commit to a school not a coach. However, kids bond with certain coaches. They look it as a friendship and become attached to a coach. They are extreamy important when they finally commit to a school. Sometimes in a case where an assistant has had success putting people into the pro’s they are also used as a selling point. We’re lucky enough to have 2 in VAndy and Johnson. They put a lot of players into the pro’s so kids know that and they want to be the next. It that coach leaves kids bail.
NJDeadhead - January 30, 2012
I forgot part of what I wanted to say...
I also wanted to point out that it’s more likely an assistant will leave, get different responsibilities, or even get fired than the head coach. And should the head coach leave, it’s almost certain the assistants will, too. So it just seems silly to me to put so much into a relationship with the position guy.
J Breezy - January 30, 2012
Not really for being good at his job...
…but for DOING his job, period. It’s Urban’s job to get recruits for recruits for Ohio State, not to worry about hurting Penn State or any other school.
J Breezy - January 30, 2012
Right.
If Urban was PSU’s coach and stealing all of Ohio State’s recruits, we’d be cackling with glee.
Look, we were vulnerable because of the scandal and the slow hire. It’s not like Urban Meyer was the only coach trying to get our recruits — he was just the most successful. I just hope those players turn out to be the biggest busts ever (nothing injury related, mind you…just useless roster deadwood).
Chris Grovich - January 30, 2012
i still cant believe that Cam Williams Dad didn’t at least make him and Armani have that meeting with BOB last week and hear him out . I can’t remember what NFL team his dad played for. Oh yeah, it was the Patriots.
Dr.TobiasFunke - January 30, 2012
Meh...
At some point you become a helicopter parent, and you’ve just gotta let your kids do their own thing.
Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
Of all the guys that defected to OSU.
It’s Armani and Cam that sting the most. Cam was so active in trying to attract other recruits and Armani was the type of athlete we need on defense. Sucks we had to lose both of those guys along with the everyone else.

I agree with this entirely.
I don’t fault Meyer for recruiting those kids. The players he got from us are terrific prospects and he’s trying to win.
I don’t see anything but rampant, unsubstantiated speculation that he’s some kind of horrible person. He’s not. He’s a very good coach and an outstanding recruiter with a world class brand backing him. He’s going to get his share of great players. We need to be aggressive enough to match it.
Adam Collyer - January 30, 2012
Also rampant, unsubstantiated speculation:
WorldBFat - January 30, 2012
Here's what's not speculation:
We don’t know.
misdreavus79 - January 30, 2012
Yep...
On the “blowz” scales this comes in as a comfortable 10.
I foresaw this coming once “Herbs” announced the black hat school…it’s business. Additionally, if anything it kind of tells me these kids either didn’t truly appreciate the grand experiment or their hearts were not committed to the nameless jerseys.
Either way, WE ARE…better off
Batwing - January 30, 2012
My feelings exactly.
I only care about the kids who want to be at PSU.
J Breezy - January 30, 2012
Ace Assbender is a cool name.
WorldBFat - January 30, 2012
Haha.
Well that was depressing. Love hearing the Michigan and OSU guys ramble on about how strong their class is and the fact they still have some strong targets on their radar. Meanwhile, not much good news on our end. Meh, there’s always next year. BOB, you have your work cut out for you.
Swiggs - January 30, 2012
You know who else keeps getting top 10 recruiting classes?
Florida State and Texas.
Tell me how worse off than them are we?
misdreavus79 - January 30, 2012
Well, obviously it comes down to coaching and development.
For every Texas and FSU you flash at me, I’ll raise you an Alabama and LSU. I realize that recruiting classes are not the best indicator of success on the field, but come on, it sets the foundation for success. To think otherwise is a little ridiculous.
Give any coach of any ability two teams, one full of “elite” guys and another of lower level guys. I bet he’d get more production out of the former. That’s not to say there won’t be busts from the elite group or superstars from the tier 2 group, but overall, you’re going to find more success with more talent.
Swiggs - January 30, 2012
Yeah, doesn't mean all hope is lost for this year.
I just find it unfair for the people who did stick with us this year to say things such as “there’s always next year”.
Let’s just keep it under perspective here. We could have had 10 recruits in our class easily. Easily.
misdreavus79 - January 30, 2012
True.
It could always be worse and I think we’ve learned that over the past few months. I don’t mean to knock any of the guys that have signed on with us. If that’s how I came across, I apologize for that. I’m especially happy with those guys that committed before the JS scandal and decided to stick with us. Shows they want to be part of Penn State.
The frustration comes from the fact that we were on the way to one of the better classes we have had in recent years only to see it wash away, and wash away to our rivals nonetheless. I agree with those here that said you know, if they don’t want to be here, we don’t want them. I couldn’t agree more, but from a fan’s perspective, tough to see what could have been.
The “always next year” comment is directed to one without a scandal and one without coaching uncertainty. It gives our new staff the chance to tackle recruiting in a way that’s far different from Joe’s regime. For that, I’m excited at the possibilities.
Swiggs - January 30, 2012
Fair.
And to be honest, this is not the time I’ve seen that sentence said by somebody, so I had more issue with the sentence itself, for what it’s worth.
I know you didn’t mean to actually knock any of the guys in the class. Anybody who dares to so so needs to have their head checked.
misdreavus79 - January 30, 2012
I don't think it meant all hope is lost for this season.
Just that this recruiting year is not going to be be the foundation for conference championships. I feel pretty confident saying if we consistently pull in classes ranked in the mid-40s, the quality of play on the field will begin to drop off.
PSUinBOSSton - January 30, 2012
Fair.

Nice healthy rival hate
Nothing’s final until the LOI is signed, my friends. Meyer was a new B1G coach, calling on recruits that he and his staff felt could be swayed. There is no legitimate reason to be unhappy with him for being there with open arms once our top level recruits had second thoughts after the JS scandal broke.
Recruits pick their school based on any number of things. One main reason is to have an enjoyable, winning experience playing football at that school. None of us can blame the top guys in our class, the ones that have their pick of top football programs, for not wanting to risk playing at PSU for the next 4 years with all of the uncertainty surrounding the program.
Best of luck to the kids that chose not to come to PSU, they weren’t ours to begin with. Best of luck to Urbz, too, except for when we play him.
Side note; he looks like a guy who would sell me overpriced insurance. Just sayin’.

Also, in case you didn't recognize one of the greatest guitar solos in the history of recorded music...
The intro is Dire Straits, “Sultans of Swing”.

Yes, one of my all-time favorite solos.
Chris Grovich - January 30, 2012
Agreed
Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist
dwlion - January 30, 2012
He finger picks instead of flat picks and his style is extremely difficult to copy. Jeff Beck and Jorma Kaukonen are two other finger pickers that have some fantastic solos if you dig into their work. I would love to play Suntans of Swain but you just can’t do it and not at least do a little of the lead work.
BMAN13 - January 30, 2012

Funny you should mention Buckingham.
I was just telling somebody last week that I’ve always considered him to be a very underrated guitarist. And I’m almost positive you’re correct – he is a finger picker. And he can’t read music.
J Breezy - January 30, 2012
Pitt has a TE Coach that is a finger picker.

I see armani reeves just signed with OSU as well. So thats a good way to start the day. I hate to say this but I was pulling for Michgan in that one. After he eliminated PSU of course, just so Urban Meyer didnt get another one from us. This is what I predict, Michigan vs OSU tight game that comes down to the wire. Michigan somehow steals 2 seconds from OSU and wins the game. Karma for Urban Meyer. Now I am gonna go shoot myself for talking about MIchigan And OSU in the same conversation
AdamP84 - January 30, 2012
I just hope BO'B and company hit the ground running next year
because it’s obvious that Meyer and Hoke are a) great recruiters and b) more than willing to attack our traditional recruiting grounds. We can’t really afford to have a mediocre class next year.
DrewRusse - January 30, 2012
Ohio State has been getting pretty much the best recruits in W. Pa. for a long time, now.
Urban is just continuing the tradition in that regard. And pre-RR, Michigan was doing quite well in W. Pa., too.
This is definitely a problem for PSU.
J Breezy - January 30, 2012
Yep. Steve Breaston and Ty Law are 2 WPA kids that come to mind for Michigan.
icavalera - January 30, 2012
Circle the Wagons...
is what PSU (and the rest of us) must do this year.
There was no way this class was going to be stellar after what transgressed the past few months, so we need to taper back our expectations until 2013 and take our licks now.
For the first time in a while and once BOB is done with the SB, PSUFB will be operating without its hands tied behind its back in quite some time. Revised S&C program, new youthful and experienced assistant coaches and a HC that is half the age of the previous guy (love you JoePa). If BOB is hungry, and I think he is, I think we’ll see a pretty incredible effort over the next few years.
Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
also
as a NYGiants fan, I’m extremely conflicted about the SB. On one hand, I want to see my GMEN ugly up Brady, but on the other hand, recruits would love seeing that SB ring on BOB.
Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
Seeing how I hate
The Patriots but despise Eli and the Giants more (being an Eagles fan, seeing the G-men win 2 bowls in the last 5 years will make me sick). So as dirty as it makes me feel, Go Pats. The silver lining is that BOB would then have a shiny new SB ring.
jman07 - January 30, 2012
U Jelly eagles fan?
Just kidding. If anything else, bringing the SB back to the NFC East improves the perception of the division. I think its on its way back to being the best in the NFL once the Skins and Cowboys get it together.
Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
I think we both can agree
that as long as Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones continue to keep their hands in the day to day football of the Boys and Skins, they won’t get it together.
jman07 - January 30, 2012
Next years class should have already started
The thing about HS recruiting is that it starts very early. You have to identify potential recruits and start a relationship their sophmore year, improve it their Jr year and by senior year they know you and you know them. Then you offer them ( unless the kid is super special they you start everything even earlier). BOB and his staff should already have an idea of what position priorities are and have kids that are jr’s this year. They have to start communication with the kids and their coaches NOW. They should also invite their top Soph, and Jr’s to their camps. If they don’t Urban and Hoke will continue to dominate PA, NJ OH, MI and NE.
NJDeadhead - January 30, 2012
It wouldn't have under the old regime.
Paterno didn’t offer sophomores. It didn’t happen. And a commitment for the NEXT class (current junios) was rare. Obviously, we haven’t seen that happen this year. But who knows what BOB’s philosophy on the matter will be. I generally don’t have a problem with extending offers three classes deep (any further and you are really gambling).
Jeff Junstrom - January 30, 2012
Not just offering
I agree it is a gamble, but I’m not talking offering only. BOB & Crew has to start to build relationships quick. Since he only has Vandy and Johnson with connections to PA he has to start contacting kids (Soph’s & Jr’s specifically) and coaches in PA & NJ as well as MD, OH, MI. If he had deep roots to the area it wouldn’t be a major issue but they are starting from scratch in a lot of area’s. Putting 4 coaches in FL ? really – that may or may not be true but I read that somwhere in the BS Diaries but that is a different topic.
NJDeadhead - January 30, 2012
True.
And it seems their trying to build those relationships in short order. Ted Roof is burning up the south, and whomever ends up being in Florida will start building down there. In PA, I know they’ve alredy been all over.
Jeff Junstrom - January 30, 2012
At what point does it make sense to just sew this thing up at 18
and save the scholarships for next year? Give a deserving walkon or two a one year scholarship, and get after the class of 2013 starting Monday. I mean, really get after it.
Nice job, Junny. There was really no way to get a recruiting podcast out of this class without throwing in some discussions of other schools. There just isn’t enough action left I fear (not having a good feeling on Cox tonight). It did, however, feel a bit like Michigan and OSU talking about how awesome they are. I would have loved to hear some perspective on some of the new guys if there were anyone available to talk about the former WV tandem, Bench, or some bits and pieces about the recent add ons.

Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
I should have added...
and this surprises you?
Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
They were never ours
I just don’t see how a kid who wanted to play for Joe Paterno could suddenly want to play for Urban Meyer. Not that he’s necessarily a bad guy, but it just seems really different. It’s like a kid saying he wants to go to Oberlin and then suddenly deciding to the Air Force Academy. Maybe not that different, but a big shift, I’d think.
I don’t see how Ohio State has all this many scholarships to give. Hopefully that bites them in the ass eventually. NCAA sanctions just aren’t very effective, are they?
I’m sure we’ll do better next year. Even before the fiasco, Joe wasn’t recruiting, Galen wasn’t recruiting, etc. It wasn’t a good situation. Now we’ll have a mostly young hungry staff and will be able to dangle early playing time as a possible reward.
Bear in mind that Iowa cleaned our clocks for years with guys that most other schools didn’t want, so there’s that.
reedjohnmiller - January 30, 2012
This.
This fact alone has me a bit encouraged because I lost all faith in the developmental capabilities of the majority of the former staff. I have to think that this alone will help us in the future.
Swiggs - January 30, 2012
Junny
I didn’t listen to the podcast, and probably won’t, but I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the updates.
Right now, I’m a bit too frustrated/Jelly to listen to the good fortunes of other programs right now while we’re still in recovery mode.
One thing i’m certain, is I’m not going to measure my self-worth by the success of recruiting, or the football program in general. We endured some lean years over the past decade and I really can’t see things getting that much worse.
Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
No problem. Podcasts, especially on recruiting, aren't for everyone, but I appreciate the kind words.
I was exchanging emails with SBN’s Recruiting Coordinator this weekend and I mentioned that “this is our tax season.” You can expect updates each of the next three days, as well as some programming changes. But you’ll see that when it’s ready.
Jeff Junstrom - January 30, 2012
My question: Is this the year we see the 2010 recruiting class pan out on the field?
-Redd (great success)
-Bolden (bust?)
-PJ (bust?)
-Alex Kenney
and then a whole slew of defensive guys..
-Royer
-DQ Jones
-E. Hailes
These were all highly rated guys.
Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
Jones and Hailes were nice gets, but I thought
Fortt, Baublitz, and Hull were a bit more anticipated. Add in Zwinak and Dieff, and if these guys make an impact this year the anti-Stars group will have some ’splainin to do.
/sitsbackandwaits
PSUinBOSSton - January 30, 2012
Sad thing here is...
That only a couple of the guys from that great class (by PSU standards) have seen decent playing time. And as a result, we are rolling with the pattern that has been PSU football for some time.
Some of these guys from that class will see the field this year, but will need a year or two to figure out the game. By the time they get it, they will have one year of eligibility left. Then we have that one good year in 4 and then are back to square one.
Swiggs - January 30, 2012
It wasn't just a great class by PSU standards...if I recall..
it was the best* class in the Big Ten.
*if you go by the pundits star system, etc.
Artiefufkin10 - January 30, 2012
You know what I want?
Guys who want to play for Penn State, not guys who have to be convinced that (insert name of other school) is not right for them.
MainLion - January 30, 2012
Exactly.
Win or lose.
FB6244 - January 30, 2012
Maybe I need to adjust my thinking.
It seems that every year I’m disappointed in our recruiting class. Sure, we seem to sign a good class every 3 or 4 years, but we have not recruited well with anything resembling consistently in a very long time. I’m hoping that this was due to old staff and we will see that change, but until it does, I think I need to adjust my expectation.
Swiggs - January 30, 2012
Let's be honest.
PSU is not the easiest place to recruit. Some kids are gonna be put off by the climate/rural atmosphere right from the gate. For as much as we talk about PA being a “football state”, the WPIAL has been the same the last few years, we don’t seem to do particularly well in the eastern part of the state, and the old regime didn’t seem to get along with McDevitt, the big power in Harrisburg. Hell, the entire YAIAA turns out maybe one or two legitimate D1 football prospects year. We have Pitt to contend with, and as much as we like to joke about them, we don’t always win those battles.
And honestly, despite our prestige and our success since ’05, PSU has never been a “sexy” name, even before the JS scandal.
Contrast that with a school like OSU; they’re the only major program in their state (and it’s just a good of a football state as PA, if not better), they’re located in an urban area, and they’re well known as a NFL factory. Every year they put guys on both sides of the ball in the League, and recruits notice that. While we do well with DL and LB, how many offensive players and DBs do we have in the NFL? Not many. Now, add in Meyer, and yeah, we may need to adjust our expectations until we can see what BO’B can do with a full year.
This reads a lot more pessimistic than I mean it, because I think we can have the potential to recruit much better than we have been. I just hope the new staff is up to the challenge.
DrewRusse - January 30, 2012
No, I think you pretty much nailed it there.
Jeff Junstrom - January 30, 2012
I agree.
The frustration is with the western PA heading to Ohio. If we lose some top in state guys to Pitt, it happens. But consistently losing top talent from the WPIAL to Ohio State stings. And you’re right, we certainly don’t have the prestige of OSU and the campus setting could not be more different, but I certainly think we can recruit well more consistently.
I hardly expect top 5, or even top 10 classes, but the old regime just wasn’t getting it done. We haven’t even been a regular among the top 20 classes in the country (at least feels that way, too lazy to research). That’s just sad given our prestige and facilities.
Swiggs - January 30, 2012
this year was shaping up to be a good class
if you really want to get depressed, put all the decommits back on the board and add Noah Spence
Dr.TobiasFunke - January 30, 2012
Poaching of our players
Why are we directing so much venom toward Urban Meyers?
The real culprit in the loss of so many of our quality commits is the freakin’ BOT selection committee that took a leisurely 2 damn months, during the final stretch run of the recruiting season, to name a new head coach. Plus nobody on the committee with any football background? Leisurely recruiting is fine if you are looking for a new head of the Art History department. During this time the only thing the new recruits heard, from every existing media outlet, was that the entire coaching staff was getting the boot. The existing staff did a great job under the circumstances in holding on to most, but what could they really tell the kids? What could they realistically tell those we were still trying to recruit? Certainly they didn’t know if they had jobs themselves. Now of course we like to say “Pick a school kid, not a football program”. Well, our BOT and President during this time were not exactly distinguishing themselves. They were clumsy, clueless and rightfully criticized. Not the best advertizing for the school. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of our now lost recruits went and recruited Meyers, not vice versa.
Nectir - January 30, 2012
My feelings towards meyer
aren’t based not on the fact that he went after a recruit or two, but that we went after pretty much all of our high end recruits. I know he poached a recruit or two from alot of schools, but he didn’t take the whole top shelf. IMO, he targeted PSU recruits because of the scandal – it wasn’t just a coincidence. I just think i t was overly opportunistic.

Yea, kind of stumbled out of the gate.
Trying to get too far ahead of myself. But once we get moving, I thought it went pretty well. Next time, when we’re not in such a big time crunch, I can edit better and be more relaxed. STAY TUNED FOR IMPROVEMENT!
