No way. If the board punts Bradley and keeps JayPa, that’s a PR nightmare. And if you are Jay, why stay at a place that fired your dad in that bullshit way?
but I think he’s actually probably at least a good QB coach. I think he’s a bad recruiter and a worse play caller though. But I don’t think many coaches would have gotten a lot more out of the guys he had in the offenses they played (supporting casts and playcalling combined). Put the same guys in a different scheme, or give them running games that could stand on their own, or with legit WRs that could catch – they all would have looked a lot better. Especially Morelli. But Jay had a huge hand in the playcalling and IMO overall he sucked at it.
No one in the NFL got any more out of Morelli than he did.
If he were coachable, he would have been because he had all the physical tools. Like a lot of college kids with strong arms but don’t win that much, because there’s a lot of other talents required to being a great QB that also aren’t teachable.
I’m saying that given the team around him, I think Jay developed Morelli about as much as he could be developed. You give him a running game and make Bell not be a douche, and he would have looked a lot better.
I thought you said he wasn't coachable in the pros.
So that means that he was coached to his full potential in college? I’m not sure I saw much growth. Came in as a meathead with a cannon, left pretty much the same, but with 18 wins.
He still did dumb things as a senior, but not nearly as often as he did as a junior.
But yeah – if it were possible to coach up that raw talent into something special, the NFL would have done it. The fact that they didn’t to me means that there wasn’t a lot more a college QB coach was going to do with him.
Morelli is cited as an example of him being a BAD QB coach
and I don’t see that as all. You can only shine a turd so much. I think Jay did about all the shining anyone could do there, and that’s all you can expect a QB coach to do.
How his redshirt was unnecessarily burned so he could throw a Hail Mary against Akron. Then when Mills and Robinson were murdered against Wisconsin he didn’t play
That was a mistake. Although didn’t his dad insist that he not be redshirted? So I always thought he sort of got what was coming to him for making stupid demands. Much like Bolden today.
I will probably root harder for him to succeed than I will BOB. Bradley has EARNED my support. BOB hasn’t. He may in the future, but he’s got some strikes against him so far.
He really walked into a buzzsaw here. I hold it against Joyner, Erickson, and many others who shrouded this search in secrecy only to end six weeks later with a guy they probably could have hired five weeks ago.
“Hey, you wanna take this prestigious job with incredible resources, an unbelievable fan base, and millions in revenue? OK, but wait six weeks while we say absolutely nothing and string the aforesaid fans along and get them riled up to no end.”
There is no way Bradley stays after this is there?
“Hey Tom, we like what you do and all but, you know, since you were around while JS was here, you can’t be head coach. But you can totally be Defensive Coordinator”
WHHAAA?
So what would the general reaction be if all of the staff was left go except for JayPa?
Say Bradley, LJ, and Vanderlin, or 2/3 are retained (hell if 1 was retained) as a DC. Would this make the O’Reily hiring easier to stomach? I know it would be for me… All I really want is 2011’s team, except with a compentant offensive coordinator, and an offensive line coach who knows their ass from a hole in the ground.
Take me back to Michigan 2007. What the fuck happened? Was it Jay? Was it Joe? Galen? Who said “no” to playing Clark. Answer me that, and I’ll tell you who the problem was all this time.
Morelli fumbled inside his own 20 for one of UM’s two scores, and I never blamed him for it. Because we should have hung 28 on that team and someone, I still dont’ know who, would rather cut off their nose to spite their face than win a football game.
then it’s also true that he did that because he watched them try to execute them all week in practice, and they sucked at it. As evidenced by the one 5 wide formation they did try, where Morelli got blind-sided and fumbled. The offense sucked that day, but that doesn’t mean they could have executed the spread better. And there’s NO evidence Clark could have done anything like what Dixon or Edwards did to UM that year. I mean, Tebow didn’t beat them either.
Just give me the same familiar defenses that we’ve had under Bradley, but except instead of that clusterfuck, give me a nice consistently above-average offense. No Mike Leach, Gundy, RichRod touchdown machine, just an above average offense. We’d be in business.
BOB doesn’t have the stature to come in and make major changes plus he doesn’t have the time to recruit, let along assemble a staff. If he wants any chance at winning next year, he’ll keep a good team around him to show him the ropes a bit.
We need an endearing nickname for our new coach. I’m ok with Bob. I was talking on the phone with my mom and kept referring to him as Bob, and she kept trying to correct me. NO NO NO, he name is Bill!! No, it’s BOB!
Malik never says he plans to enroll in January, and that’s the first I’d ever seen of it. Could have been true, just not as widely known as Jesse James.
personally, i can’t tell if the owner of that site is pro-nebraska/pelini or anti.
but be careful with this meme or someone will be photoshopping BOB into that “Christmas Card.” There is a version floating around with U. Meyer’s face instead of Pelini.
Shit, is this Fox crew the same ones that called the last Florida NC game?
Where they were totally confused over the downs at one point, and were like THEY’RE GOING FOR IT ON 4TH DOWN, WOW, OH MY, THEY DIDN’T GET IT!!! WOW… ahhhh….. wait. It’s 4th down… 4th and 3,
Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno issued a statement tonight about the expected hiring of his replacement. Like Paterno, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien attended Brown University.
"I understand Bill O’Brien has been named head coach and I want to congratulate him on his appointment," Paterno said in a statement to the AP provided by his family. "I don’t know Bill, but I respect his coaching record, and I am particularly pleased we share a connection to my alma mater, Brown."
"Despite recent commentary to the contrary, Penn State football has always been about more than winning," Paterno added, citing what he said was the program’s commitment to education and community service. "I am hopeful this tradition will continue."
I loved his press conference after the 2005 Michigan loss
and a reporter asked him if we were overwhelmed by Mike Hart and Joe says I don’t even know what that word means. He then goes on to talk about how good a player Hart is. The same report follows up with a dumb question and Joe says “I think you were overwhelmed by that question”
The person familiar with the search told the AP most of the current staff could be let go.
“Most”. Not “all”. This gives me hope that Bradley agreed to stay on as DC. If he did agree it solves everyone’s problems, to wit:
BOB doesn’t have to build a recruiting network from the ground up, and he’s not a defensive guy so he already has his defense in place. Kind of like when Mike Tomlin kept Dick LeBeau for the Steelers.
The BOT splits the difference between those who want a clean sweep and those who want Bradley, and still has Bradley if BOB were to bolt for the NFL.
And Bradley has a job. Really, does he have good prospects elsewhere? He has no NFL experience. Other colleges might assume he’ll want to go back to Penn State as soon as the opportunity arises.
Why does LJ get a pass for crappy DEs the last two years at least?
Actually, he’s had two, maybe three really good DE’s since 05 – Hali, Maybin (sort of), and Evans (sort of). All the others have been disappointments – particularly against good OLs. Bradley’s secondary gets blamed, but it’s a scheme that relies on DL pressure, LJ gets to recruit a ton of guys for DL and many of his DEs have been underwhelming at best. I know, he’s a great recruiter and I know he’s also put out a few great DTs. But IMO the deficiency at DE gets overlooked when he’s discussed. IMO Vandy is every bit as good, and possibly a better coach.
It’s not his job to keep them playing well in the NFL, and those guys were dominant players at PSU. How many D-linemen excelled at PSU and were picked high and went on to have good careers under LJ? Now, apart from LBs, is any other position close to that?
He got a signing bonus, then got cut. If he’d have stayed in school, he would have been NFL ready and got to play out his full first contract too. I get the decision, but in hindsight it was wrong.
What I’m saying is, Bradley gets DESTROYED by many because his secondary gives up a lot of yards to great QBs. But against great OLs, LJ’s DLs don’t do a whole hell of a lot either, and the defensive scheme relies on pressure from the DL. The last two years in particular have been weak in that regard.
Last year’s line (and LBs) were subpar, especially by PSU standards (and decimated by injury, too). But this year? You have impossibly high standards if the front seven performance in 2011 wasn’t good enough for you. That’s a top ten unit in the country, probably, missing its best edge rusher (Massaro) and best LB (Mauti).
How many sacks did our ends have TOTAL? And I don’t think Massaro was primed to blow up into a star this year. I think he would have been better than Lattimore or Stanley, but that’s not saying much.
Although giving up some yards is part of Bradley’s D. And I agree it needs a solid pass rush to really succeed. And I agree that the past two years have been somewhat of an indictment on that.
However, I think you didn’t give his 02-09 successes enough credit.
Specifically I’m thinking of the OSU game where they were manhandled that year. I believe Odrick and Taylor played DT, Evans at one DE and I can’t remember the other – Gaines?
OSU scored 6 points in that game and he had our only sack. Vs USC they had him dropped in zone half the time and guys were running so free vs our secondary it didn’t matter.
I watched him speed rush into the backfield time and time again
the OT block him back that way and Sanchez step right up where he used to be over and over again. The secondary didn’t have a chance because Sanchez’s shirt only got dirty when Maybin cheated.
But, putting aside how Joyner has handled this (which includes an email to athletic department employees today saying something along the lines of “don’t believe everything you see on TV. You’ll know before anyone else.” Really?) I’m excited about BoB. Mainly because I’m so interested in how things are going to be different. Off the top of my head:
-He’ll wear a headset
-He’ll recruit
-He might be not put the likes of Graham Zug and Drew Astorino back on punt returns.
I do hope he understands the standard Joe set wrt to academics. That’s big.
Yea, RAGE!RAGE!RAGE! happened, but now that everyone is calming down, this isn't a TERRIBLE hire.
I mean, he wasn’t on anyone’s Top 25 lists a month ago, so that’s a reason for the RAGE!, as is the fact that he’s not Joe Paterno. But he could turn out to be OK. He has struggled in college, but it has been six years since he’s been in the CFB game (could be a positive or a negative). He’s overseen quite a prolific offense, though something should be said for the QB he inherited.
Since I moved out of the city, I moved to a location about 4 miles from the stadium. Members of the business office/coaching staff/players populate my neighborhood. I have heard, in passing, that one complaint they have since BB came in is that BB and TB do not open up the “real” offensive gameplan meetings to anyone else. When they are done, the offense gets instruction on how to run it.
Now, maybe it’s not accurate, or is exaggerated. But the Weis and McDaniels efforts seem to me to lend some credence to that. I don’t look forward to adding to those examples.
I was in a bar just outside of Boston when this all leaked yesterday.
About 4 or 5 guys were sitting at the bar next to a group of us, and not knowing that I was a Penn State fan, were belly laughing at this hire, talking about how he’s “pretty much a waste of space.” Very comforting.
That's probably true of most teams with veteran QBs
And a veteran HC.
Brady could probably just call all the plays himself with some input from guys watching in the booth. It’s not that hard, I’d imagine.
Based on the three years I lived there, I’d say that Boston fans generally dont know shit about football. It wasn’t even that popular until the Pats got good.
Maybe that doesn’t matter. As long as he learned a lot in the process and can teach the pro set to rookies, that will work. He doesn’t have to be an innovator.
And you are correct — Dr. John’s Iko rules Carnival as it should be.
Although one of the best times I’ve ever had happened about 12 years ago the night before our parade. We’re in a place on Tchopitoulas and get into a bar-wide thing trying to remember the original artists. Finally, a waitress named Michelle calls her mother on the West Bank (remarkably close to where my wife’s family originates) and gets the answer: Dixie Cups.
Next day, Orpheus parade. Dixie Cups on one of our lead floats. I talked with them while we were forming Uptown.
We still get back to the same place with most of the same people every year and this has become a seminal, cosmic sort of event — the Nostadixiecup.
one thing I love love love about FOX football broadcasts is the "clean" screen. Nothing scrolling; no giant edge to edge score images. Love that; just let me see the game.
Isn’t Gus Johnson the guy that says “Down the seam!!!!” (or something like that) when the guy is running down the field and then trips on the sprinkler head that pops up? He totally said that in the 1Q.
The way ESPN reporters are pouring it on, I have to believe he either is really a solid coach or there was a mandate to be extra positive after all the dirt they shoveled on the program.
They could think this is the dumbest thing on earth but will say the exact opposite. I have yet to hear one NFL analyst say antying bad about a coach or a hire involving a coach hire.
espn still hates us. Don’t let yourself believe that will ever change. They would do it all over again if they had a chance. They do what they need to do to get create a story
Maybe they were tyring to win some people back, like “oh they are talking nice about us, I will go back to them” type shit. But they are horrible horrible people.
"Much is being said about the hiring of Bill O’Brien as the next football coach at Penn State," Collins wrote. "I do not know him. I have never met him nor been coached by him. One thing I do know is that I will support him and I call on all Penn State football lettermen to do the same.
"Whether you agree or disagree with his hiring, we should support him. Instead of chastising him for not being a Penn Stater, let’s show him what it means to be a Penn Stater. Coach O’Brien is faced with the daunting task of resurrecting our beloved, yet bruised program. Let’s support him in any way we can."
The dude who is President of The Lettermen Club (can’t remember his name) said that Short was NOT speaking for the club. The club has asked for a meeting with Joyer.
And awesome….and by awesome, I mean classy. Can’t wait for someone to tweet that Bradley and everybody else have been let go….. To quote Ron Burgandy….“You stay classy PSU”
Met her in person at the PSU/Bama game in Tuscaloosa
We tailgated together! I have also met AdamShell in person. And some cool people from BHGP. You need to check that site out. Hilarious. And they are very cool to PSU fans who participate.
I live in a very rural part of North Carolina, and most of my neighbors are my wife’s relatives. They know I work at Duke, but don’t pester me for tickets — especially not the University of North Carolina fans . . . .
When I meet someone and I tell them I work at Duke, they assume Duke Energy. Big local employer.
PSU had no leverage at this point except to ask if he would either start work full time day 1 or retain key assistants to continue recruiting and on campus leadership. If BOB sad yes to either of those then PSU had to hand him his contract or they would never get a call back from the NFL.
Something tells me that the Pats will try to find a way to shuffle him out early.
Doug Marrone was originally order to stay with the Saints for the balance of the year but they let him go as it was obviously a distraction to them and a potential playoff run.
I get in the habit that I associate the icon with the person, so that is what I assume you acutally look like. Just how I wish jesse. actually looks like his icon. I know he doesn’t but in my head he does.
Well it's not like Bradley didn't handle the secondary and DCoord at the same time.
I’m not sure what rules there are about how many coaches you can have on staff or whatnot. But I would imagine if LJ Sr. was staying on, he wouldn’t wanna give up his bread and butter. Unless they bring in one Oline coach and split Ends and Tackles.
This is just my knee-jerk reaction to hearing that we’re going to be treated to an ENTIRE staff of people that no other major program even considered hiring.
In case anyone is interested in showing up for the presser tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 11:30 at the Nittany Lion Inn — in true blue new Penn State fashion – it’s not open to the public.
over this awful handling of the situation. You all don’t deserve such an incompetent administration. Knowing this is a horrible situation either way, why is it important to make a “clean break” from everything previous? As far as i’m concerned, this was the fault of a rogue pedophile along with an incompetent administration and the Penn State community doesn’t deserve this. I really hope Tom Bradley is allowed to stay on staff. That guy deserves to stay.
There were plenty of better options for the kids on the team. This guy isn’t anywhere on the list. Rent, don’t buy. Leave that office alone. And don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
The way espn and the media turned every rabbit fart from mount nittany into crawler material…..I would keep this process to myself too if for no other reason than to give them a fuck you.
Not totally sure if Bradley would actually agree to this, but it would definitely smooth the transition. So that’s why I bet a pony bottle instead of a pitcher.
the amount of people – this board included – who got their panties in a bunch over every rumor they heard, I’d argue lots of people take tweets as true facts.
Sometimes it’s a great way to instantly break info. Other times, it’s a way to be clueless.
I shit you not, there’s a group of people who are against changing it because they want to honor Gen Beaver. Who died in 1914 and has 409 fewer career wins at the division 1 level.
I’d be ok with road unis that are total opposite of our homes – blue helmet, white stripe, white shirts, blue pants. Black socks. Not white shoes, however. That would look naff.
My brother just sent me this which is on Lions24/7
Rundown from Mckinley on ESPN:
If you want to believe this guy or not is up to you, but he’s offering a very detailed synopsis of the search.
Meyer was originally #1. Gruden was #1 after Meyer backed down. 7 yrs, $33.5 million was his offer. He wanted full disclosure about the investigation and an out clause for 3 NFL teams. When PSU disagreed, he backed away…but he was prepared to take the job if his demands were met. He says that Gruden was very close to taking the job. Deal with Gruden broke down around Christmas.
After Gruden situation fell through,
Plan A: Richt
Plan B: O’Brien
Plan C: Grobe
Plan D: Bradley
Les Miles did reach out to PSU last week, but his interest was mild. Ditto for Stoops. Chris Petersen was never seriously considered. Grobe withdrew from consideration last week, making Scrap Plan C.
Richt’s eventual hang-up became the fact that his daughter has some type of specific illness, and Richt’s wife was very concerned about relocating her (similar to Petersen’s son). Other than that, he claims that the Richt deal was entirely agreed upon until his wife got cold feet. According to him, Richt still wants the job, but chose to put his family first.
Says that Joyner was awful to deal with…terribly dishonest.
Says Ira did a great job with both Gruden and Richt. Joyner was the real hold-up in landing one of the big guys.
Says if he had to guess on what staff members would be retained…Buggs and LJ and/or Vandy. Thinks Buggs is most likely to stay and perhaps Vandy/LJ. Scrap told PSU that he wanted to leave. Has no idea what they will do with Jay, but he won’t be on staff
Lubert should have been lead on all of this. I said this on an earlier thread, but filthy rich guys are always the best negotiators. It doesn’t surprise me at all that he was the best part of the committee
If you ask me, do you want Beef Obrady or Richt… Well… I’d pick Richt, but it would have been awefully close. And I don’t hold it against the committee for not dealing with Gruden if he had an automatic out for three teams — that’s horseshit. 1 team maybe, but 3?
The first time someone, cough giger couch, says or asks something stupid, just give it to them. lay down the law the first time and they will know who they are dealing with.
I got a job one time where I replaced someone who had been there for 20 years. I was miserable because folks kept telling me, “That’s not what X did.” and I tried to do as she had done. I finally starting doing things my way, and (politely) telling people that’s how it was going to be. Things got much better shortly thereafter,
I don’t care if he has to change in the hallway just before going into the presser. Wear OUR uniform — button-down shirt, tie, and at least a sport coat.
Not at all. It just fits the narrative Joyner-haters want to believe.
I could believe the stuff about Gruden, but not the rest. The reports that Roman and The Green Bay guy were interviewed are very credible. Where are they on that list?
I don’t think we ever had a chance with Peterson, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t ask. And what about all of the Munchak stories? I also suspect we called Pat Fitzgerald. Little chance he’d leave NW, but he loves JoePa and is supposedly upset with the pace of promised facility upgrades there. Worth asking.
Richt seems unlikely. I think he’s just angling for a better deal from Georgia, but that situation there is odd. Georgia needs to pay up or fire him. They either think he can win the SEC or they don’t.
Not to disparage a whole profession, but I cover medicine for a living so it wouldn’t surprise me if Joyner is kind of a dick. Ortho surgeons are known to be “cowboys.”
But what was Joyner supposedly dishonest about? In my experience, you don’t ever know if an employer is dishonest until after you take the job.
I’m not impressed with his job as AD, but I think there’s now a tendency to paint him as even worse than he is.
“I am thrilled to be the head coach of the Penn State football program,” O’Brien said in a statement. “As head coach of this special football program, it is my responsibility to ensure that this program represents the highest level of character, respect and integrity in everything we do.”
“There is tremendous pride in Penn State football and (we) will never, ever take that for granted,” O’Brien said.
“We have found the man to take Penn State football forward,” acting athletic director David Joyner said. “Needless to say, we have been looking for someone with some very special qualities, beginning with a heart that beats to the values and vision of Penn State University and our Penn State football legacy and tradition.”
And to be fair, we have been struggling to move the football forward as of late.
I agree that they need to stop apologizing. That was Lavar’s point too, but if the only way to do that was to hire Bradley then that’s going too far the other direction just for a symbol.
The more I think about this, the more I think there’s a case to be made that Bradley is not the right guy because we desperately need to move our offense into the post-WWII era and Bradley might not be the guy to do that. Could he really fire Jay, Galen, and Anderson, men he’s worked with forever? He’s known Jay since he was a little kid. And who would he hire to replace them. What offensive coaches outside of PSU does he know?
I don’t know if all that is quite true, but it may be.
Penn State interim head coach Tom Bradley told ESPN’s John Barr that he met one-on-one with Joyner, who told him they decided to go in a different direction.
Asked if he would remain on the staff, Bradley said he’s had other offers. In reflecting on his short time at the helm of Penn State, he said: “I have learned more in 55 days than most people learn in a coaching career. I’m better for it.”
Earlier Friday, Bradley’s attorney, Rich Puleo, said the interim coach had been fired by Penn State, a report Bradley refuted.
“I am not fired by Penn State,” Bradley said. “I am still an employee of Penn State University, still a member of the staff — everybody is on the staff until (O’Brien) decides who he wants to keep on his staff.”
btw, where are the MODs. Slackers are probably sleeping at near-midnight; there should be a new thread posted. Don't they know that the PSU admin issues press releases at 11 pm-midnight? LOL
The more I read about this guy, the less I believe the notion that he doesn’t do anything for the Patriots. It’s been noted that Belichek originally didn’t want an OC, but then reluctantly took O’Brien. But I noticed that the Pats have nobody listed as a Defensive Coordinator either. So it seems that Belichek is just a total control freak. That’s not a knock on O’Brien. If anything it shows he can deal with difficult people.
And at least O’Brien is at least sometimes on the sidelines. Many NFL OC/QBCs are only in the booth. And despite their argument, the Boston media seems to believe Brady when he says he really likes working with him and that he’s important. So these are all positives. If he steals some of the Pats other offensive assistants, that would probably be ok too.
It’s like listening to vultures eating road kill. We’re “insular”. Penn State is “damaged”. Every adjective is negative. At the end, I’m left feeling like we were lucky to get BOB…let alone a real coach.

Not without a job, but not exactly with one either. He’s at the behest of BOB, it would appear

In that case
Fuck that. Go get a gig elsewhere and beat PSU as the HC of a MAC school.

No way Jay remains
No way. If the board punts Bradley and keeps JayPa, that’s a PR nightmare. And if you are Jay, why stay at a place that fired your dad in that bullshit way?

So you're citing AM, but then saying he wasn't coachable?
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012
I don't understand your question.
I’m saying that given the team around him, I think Jay developed Morelli about as much as he could be developed. You give him a running game and make Bell not be a douche, and he would have looked a lot better.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
I thought you said he wasn't coachable in the pros.

MRob, DC17, maybe (though I’d argue they too weren’t great QBs, per se, more great leaders in an offense suited perfectly for their skills).

Morelli is cited as an example of him being a BAD QB coach

psualum9931 - January 6, 2012
We would have made a bowl game
if he hadn’t fumbled on the two yard line against Virginia.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
That's bullshite...
I remember that game…he was down. Seriously, watch the replay if you can find it. He was down.
rodney20 - January 7, 2012
I will always be a huge Zack Mills fan.
All heart and class.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
I crushed on him hard
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
ew really?
belbijou - January 6, 2012
hey, I did too
plus he was around my age, and grew up about 15 minutes from me.
Don’t get me wrong, he didn’t make my heart go pitter-patter like Kerry Collins did back in the day. Oh, how middle school crushes die hard…
Cari Greene - January 6, 2012
Couldn't agree more
Zack Mills played with heart and integrity. Great kid. Sad he had such limited success.
87Townie - January 7, 2012
Don't forget
How his redshirt was unnecessarily burned so he could throw a Hail Mary against Akron. Then when Mills and Robinson were murdered against Wisconsin he didn’t play
OmarLittle - January 6, 2012
Yep.
That was a mistake. Although didn’t his dad insist that he not be redshirted? So I always thought he sort of got what was coming to him for making stupid demands. Much like Bolden today.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
Don’t agree that it was a bad decision necessarily; if he was a senior in 08 would Clark have gotten the nod?
But I seem to remember what you do re: promises about redshirting. They probably thought he was going to the NFL. Whoops.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
I was never quite sure Joe Paterno was the type of guy who would be held hostage by a player’s dad. Either way, Morelli needed a RS year
OmarLittle - January 6, 2012
I'm surprised he finished out the season.
Awkward.
Kyle_Martin - January 6, 2012
I did not know they were friends. Interesting.
Ben16 - January 6, 2012
From Cory Giger
rpm164 - January 6, 2012
Scrap is too classy to say anything else but this
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
If he gets an HC job somewhere
I will probably root harder for him to succeed than I will BOB. Bradley has EARNED my support. BOB hasn’t. He may in the future, but he’s got some strikes against him so far.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
me too
however, BOB can’t earn your support unless you give him a shot.
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
I've never once said I think he's incapable of doing the job.
I’ve only ever said I don’t think he was the most qualified person for it.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
I really don't hold anything against BOB.
He really walked into a buzzsaw here. I hold it against Joyner, Erickson, and many others who shrouded this search in secrecy only to end six weeks later with a guy they probably could have hired five weeks ago.
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012
They sure as hell didn't do this guy any favors.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
That's for sure.
“Hey, you wanna take this prestigious job with incredible resources, an unbelievable fan base, and millions in revenue? OK, but wait six weeks while we say absolutely nothing and string the aforesaid fans along and get them riled up to no end.”
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012
and, do it only part time to start
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
It's the decent thing to give someone respect
A douche thing to say they must earn it.
psualum9931 - January 6, 2012
I'm not much for platitudes.
But I disagree with this one.
gumbercules - January 7, 2012
I'm with you gumber
Respect isn’t an automatic, you have to earn it—and keep earning it, lest you lose it.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
BOB should have earned your support the second he agreed to become PSU head coach
SBlion - January 6, 2012
Why? Because he signed a contract?
Respect is earned. As is disrespect. Until then I’m neutral. About anyone.
And I will not support anyone until he’s earned my respect. Will you support him no matter what he does, just because he’s the Penn State coach?
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
maybe full time
not part time
FB6244 - January 6, 2012
And those strikes are . . . ? ? ?
If you’re going to make a claim, BACK IT UP or SHUT UP.
WestHalls68 - January 7, 2012
There is no way Bradley stays after this is there?
“Hey Tom, we like what you do and all but, you know, since you were around while JS was here, you can’t be head coach. But you can totally be Defensive Coordinator”
WHHAAA?
So what would the general reaction be if all of the staff was left go except for JayPa?
jman07 - January 6, 2012
Horror
rpm164 - January 6, 2012
Any chance Jay is kept as a nod to Joe?
JIMPSU - January 6, 2012
The only nod they give to Joe
is “yea, that old dude over there did a few good things for PSU back in the day”
jman07 - January 6, 2012
You think this administration
would dare give Joe even that much credit?
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
he might get a department job
not as part of the coaching staff. Having a Paterno would help with donations.
Cari Greene - January 6, 2012
Serious Question
Say Bradley, LJ, and Vanderlin, or 2/3 are retained (hell if 1 was retained) as a DC. Would this make the O’Reily hiring easier to stomach? I know it would be for me… All I really want is 2011’s team, except with a compentant offensive coordinator, and an offensive line coach who knows their ass from a hole in the ground.
millzners - January 6, 2012
Current D staff and real Offensive system...NICE
SweepTheLeg - January 6, 2012
Is it a real Offensive system if JayPa is still included?
jman07 - January 6, 2012
Yes...no Galen Hall or Joe changing things at last min
OR….make Jay be the AD
SweepTheLeg - January 6, 2012
Sorry
We already decided in the other thread. Joe Battista for AD. He wants your money, not your two cents. And he’s got the moniker to boot – JoeBa.
Smee - January 6, 2012
We'll never know
Take me back to Michigan 2007. What the fuck happened? Was it Jay? Was it Joe? Galen? Who said “no” to playing Clark. Answer me that, and I’ll tell you who the problem was all this time.
millzners - January 6, 2012
Besides Scott coating his hands in butter?
but yea, I agree. That was a game that should have been won by PSU by 30.
jman07 - January 6, 2012
Morelli fumbled inside his own 20 for one of UM’s two scores, and I never blamed him for it. Because we should have hung 28 on that team and someone, I still dont’ know who, would rather cut off their nose to spite their face than win a football game.
millzners - January 6, 2012
It was Joe. He scrapped the spread formations the night before the game.
Chris Grovich - January 6, 2012
FIRE JOE!
wait.
Did that.
Crap.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
Fire him again!
Fire Sue!
jman07 - January 6, 2012
No swimming pool for you!
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
That is why
On some level, I am happy with this hire.
millzners - January 6, 2012
If that's true
then it’s also true that he did that because he watched them try to execute them all week in practice, and they sucked at it.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
Forgot they
beat the mighty Tim Tebow. Thanks for reminding me – that sort of brightened my night!
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
yeah but they couldn't stop Tebow
They just had a last minute TD from Henne to Maningham, and outscored them.
millzners - January 6, 2012
In my mind:
same thing. Tebow lost.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
That's all I really wanted from this process
Just give me the same familiar defenses that we’ve had under Bradley, but except instead of that clusterfuck, give me a nice consistently above-average offense. No Mike Leach, Gundy, RichRod touchdown machine, just an above average offense. We’d be in business.
millzners - January 6, 2012
Yes plus
add D. Clark as a GA
PhilaLion - January 6, 2012
This
gets a vigorous co-sign from me.
LAPSU - January 6, 2012
If Bradley stays on as D-coordinator
he’s a way better person than I am.
Joe 96alum - January 6, 2012
Maybe he needs a job...everyone has bills to pay Joe...but totally get what you are saying
SweepTheLeg - January 6, 2012
It would be hard but maybe he really cares for these kids and decides if offered he will stick it out.
Ben16 - January 6, 2012

How can it be a bad PR move
to make Bradley the head coach, yet it wouldn’t be a bad PR move to keep him on staff?
Just assuming something like that would actually play out.
jman07 - January 6, 2012
It's not.
Stop worrying about it. He’s on his way out.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
Keeping some current staff on board would be awesome
if for no other reason than they could show him how things are run here at Penn State. I’d be all for it, if the current staff is
Nittany_Ryan - January 6, 2012
I was personally hoping they would all give Joyner the finger
in solidarity for treating them like shit.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
I think it's legit that some of the staff is kept
BOB doesn’t have the stature to come in and make major changes plus he doesn’t have the time to recruit, let along assemble a staff. If he wants any chance at winning next year, he’ll keep a good team around him to show him the ropes a bit.

We need an endearing nickname for our new coach. I’m ok with Bob. I was talking on the phone with my mom and kept referring to him as Bob, and she kept trying to correct me. NO NO NO, he name is Bill!! No, it’s BOB!

From yahoo article:
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-pennstate-obrien
“Most”.
Joe 96alum - January 6, 2012
Really doubt it would be Bradley.
LJ and Vandy seem so much more likely.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Yea, pretty much this.
LJ if it’s only one. He won’t be at Ohio State, so we dodged that bullet. And he’s relatively new enough to not have Sandusky-stink on him.
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012
No Vandy love?
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
Vandy love, fo sho.
But I just don’t see BOTH of them staying put. One a promotion to DC? Maybe. But then the other would not stick around having seen that happen.
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012
No way bro
All he did was coach Poz. And Connor. And Lee. And Bowman. And Derek Wake (Cameron is a lame name).
OmarLittle - January 6, 2012
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
LJ gets a pass for a *lot* of stuff.
Chris Grovich - January 6, 2012
The good far outweighs the bad, mind you.
Chris Grovich - January 6, 2012
Eliminate the sort ofs.
Hali, Maybin, and Evans were college beatss. Add Odrick and Dev Stillin. Add Michael Haynes under LJ. Add Anthony Adams and Kennedy.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
They were beasts against average OLs (Evans and Maybin)
I don’t recall them doing much of anything against OSU or USC.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
Maybin = sort of? Evans?
It’s not his job to keep them playing well in the NFL, and those guys were dominant players at PSU. How many D-linemen excelled at PSU and were picked high and went on to have good careers under LJ? Now, apart from LBs, is any other position close to that?
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
I'm not talking about the NFL.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
Then how do you call Maybin "sort of" good?
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
He was exposed vs. OSU and USC, where he did a lot of nothing.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
Except for having a huge sack against OSU in a road win.
But those are just details.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Can't say I recall it.
My bad on that. He DID get exposed vs. USC though. And the 2006 DL absolutely sucked against OSU.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
He was limited against an NFL line as an undersized 20 year old DE.
Doesn’t mitigate a huge year, in my opinion.
Who was on the 06 line? Honestly don’t recall.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
He took the money that stupid people offered him.
It was not a good long term decision, he needed at least one more year in college. Maybe two.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
Didn't he have an awesome year with the JEts?
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Not awesome, but respectable. Besides leaving too early, he went to a mess of a team.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
Respectable.
So, awesome compared to his two with the Bills.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Yeah, compared to “Greatest Ever Draft Flops” Maybin with the Bills, “Useful Contributor To A Decent Defense” Maybin is pretty damn good.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
He's doing better.
He wasn’t ready for the NFL when he left. But that’s three years ago now. He left here as a sophomore that only played one season.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
And anybody who goes to the Bills is not getting any sort of quality coaching
GMac14 - January 6, 2012
Very true
The Jets used him properly. He’s a situational pass rusher, maybe his role can expand in the future.
psualum9931 - January 6, 2012
it was a great long term decision financially
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Not if he doesn't get a second contract.
He got a signing bonus, then got cut. If he’d have stayed in school, he would have been NFL ready and got to play out his full first contract too. I get the decision, but in hindsight it was wrong.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
I guess
but wasn’t the signing bonus pretty tremendous? I could see how a kid gets blinded by that. I do agree he needed more time in college.
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Probably.
But there is no reason to assume that a similar or greater bonus would not have been available the next season.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
opposite thing happened to Mo Evans
had a monster Sophomore year, and stayed…then had a meh Jr year, and was he even drafted? I don’t blame Maybin for taking the money when it was there.
Cari Greene - January 6, 2012
Evans smoked himself into the dog house
Then got beat out by Maybin.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
okay
that doesn’t negate the point that, had he left after his monster sophomore year, he would have had a big paycheck and instead did not.
Cari Greene - January 6, 2012
No, it doesn't.
It just points to the fact that Maurice Evans played a role in his own demise.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
Also, I agree with you.
But am not sure it mitigates that he was a tick in the LJSR coaching success box.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Look I'm not saying he wasn't a success.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
Last year’s line (and LBs) were subpar, especially by PSU standards (and decimated by injury, too). But this year? You have impossibly high standards if the front seven performance in 2011 wasn’t good enough for you. That’s a top ten unit in the country, probably, missing its best edge rusher (Massaro) and best LB (Mauti).
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
Our ends got 0 pressure all year.
How many sacks did our ends have TOTAL? And I don’t think Massaro was primed to blow up into a star this year. I think he would have been better than Lattimore or Stanley, but that’s not saying much.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
We didn't have great ends this year
But our starting DTs combined for 25.0 TFL. That’s kind of crazy.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
Gotcha.
Although giving up some yards is part of Bradley’s D. And I agree it needs a solid pass rush to really succeed. And I agree that the past two years have been somewhat of an indictment on that.
However, I think you didn’t give his 02-09 successes enough credit.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Fair enough.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
I wrote 06 but I meant 07.
Specifically I’m thinking of the OSU game where they were manhandled that year. I believe Odrick and Taylor played DT, Evans at one DE and I can’t remember the other – Gaines?
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
So
two sophomores and a freshman were manhandled by one of the best two teams in the country. Doesn’t sound like something to hold against LJSR to me.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Fat Eddie on that line?
There was a guy LJSR coached up. He was a waste and in his senior year LJ made him a very effective space eater.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Exposed?
OSU scored 6 points in that game and he had our only sack. Vs USC they had him dropped in zone half the time and guys were running so free vs our secondary it didn’t matter.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
I watched him speed rush into the backfield time and time again
the OT block him back that way and Sanchez step right up where he used to be over and over again. The secondary didn’t have a chance because Sanchez’s shirt only got dirty when Maybin cheated.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
I'll grant your recollection if you want
But that still gives him one bad game against a line loaded with NFL talent and in which the rest of the team got crushed too.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
I am with you.
OmarLittle - January 6, 2012
Thank you.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012

So what do you make of the above reported tweets
that Bradley wasn’t fired? If BOB is truly staying with the Pats for the playoff run, keeping Bradley makes things enormously easier for him.
Joe 96alum - January 6, 2012
If either Vandy or LJ are kept
I’m happy, I’ll toast to the new guy, and I’ll look forward to a modern Penn State offense next season. Otherwise I’ll be a lot more pescimistic.
millzners - January 6, 2012
Yeah,
’Cause no NFL experience is good enough to net the Penn State job! Woo!
chocochuck02 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
I know I'm very alone on this
But, putting aside how Joyner has handled this (which includes an email to athletic department employees today saying something along the lines of “don’t believe everything you see on TV.
That’s big.
speedomike - January 6, 2012
But what is his views on running reverses?
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Zook would have done all those things.
Would you have been excited for Zook?
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
YES
Oh my God yes I would have!
speedomike - January 6, 2012
Yea, RAGE!RAGE!RAGE! happened, but now that everyone is calming down, this isn't a TERRIBLE hire.
I mean, he wasn’t on anyone’s Top 25 lists a month ago, so that’s a reason for the RAGE!, as is the fact that he’s not Joe Paterno. But he could turn out to be OK. He has struggled in college, but it has been six years since he’s been in the CFB game (could be a positive or a negative). He’s overseen quite a prolific offense, though something should be said for the QB he inherited.
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012
And fact that he only oversaw it for one season.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
And that the amount he oversaw it is MAJORLY debatable.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
And that for two full seasons his head coach didn't trust him enough to promote him
in favor of leaving the OC position vacant.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Man, you're just writing the future point/counterpoint posts we're working on.
Though that side of the argument likely wasn’t going to want for content.
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012

WorldBFat - January 6, 2012

AriesGD - January 6, 2012
And the fact that, in my opinion,
the Pats offensive performance would not be impacted one bit if he were to leave right away and come here.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
So you're saying you're 100% in favor of the hire, then?
Chris Grovich - January 6, 2012
Totally love it.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
So why don't they just let him go?
I guess Belichik will need someone to make him coffee while he draws up gameplans?
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
You mean like how they didn't give him an extension and this is his last year on
the contract he signed as QB coach?
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
I was in a bar just outside of Boston when this all leaked yesterday.
About 4 or 5 guys were sitting at the bar next to a group of us, and not knowing that I was a Penn State fan, were belly laughing at this hire, talking about how he’s “pretty much a waste of space.” Very comforting.
mleepsu08 - January 6, 2012
Look, it's not necessarily scientific, or specific.
It’s weird, it comes off as how you and I would make sarcastic jokes about office politics. But I never got the impression it wasn’t rooted in truth.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Hm, I wasn't disagreeing
Just sort of actually curious as to why they don’t just tell him to move along if he wants out.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012

PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012

IT’S NOT DIRTY! No one gets it.
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012

FB6244 - January 6, 2012
That's probably true of most teams with veteran QBs
And a veteran HC.
Brady could probably just call all the plays himself with some input from guys watching in the booth. It’s not that hard, I’d imagine.
Based on the three years I lived there, I’d say that Boston fans generally dont know shit about football. It wasn’t even that popular until the Pats got good.
reedjohnmiller - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Meh
Maybe that doesn’t matter. As long as he learned a lot in the process and can teach the pro set to rookies, that will work. He doesn’t have to be an innovator.
reedjohnmiller - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Um, pro set?
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Whatever the offense is called.
reedjohnmiller - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Spread?
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Will we still run that?
I just meant pro as in not the triple-option, wishbone, Delaware wing-T, single-wing, etc.
reedjohnmiller - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Gotcha.
But if he is running the Pats offense, it’s a spread offense 9 sets out of 10.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Although I hope he realizes that Silas is better than any of the running backs the Patriots currently have
and uses him accordingly.
GMac14 - January 6, 2012
RAGE!RAGE!RAGE! might be over
But the part where I can construct some kind of reasonable apologist explanation for how he’s qualified for this job is really nowhere close yet.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
It's a slow process.
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012
I don't mind him per se
I don’t like that I heard he was the leak.
I don’t like that we were promised a home run, and although he may be good he is not a home run.. But who I am I anyway.
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Agree.
I think the man should be given a chance, but the timing, sourcing, secrecy, etc. of the process is infuriating.
Jeff Junstrom - January 6, 2012

it is still a terriblle hire
FB6244 - January 6, 2012

Although one of the best times I’ve ever had happened about 12 years ago the night before our parade. Next day, Orpheus parade. Dixie Cups on one of our lead floats. I talked with them while we were forming Uptown.
We still get back to the same place with most of the same people every year and this has become a seminal, cosmic sort of event — the Nostadixiecup.

Does anyone care what we say? #99percentforever
Mr. Rosewater - January 6, 2012
My understanding
Is that Brandon Short and LaVar Arrington had a problem with Tom Bradley not getting hired.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
Agreed
I don’t think they would have been happy with anybody getting hired except for Bradley
GMac14 - January 6, 2012
also
The dude who is President of The Lettermen Club (can’t remember his name) said that Short was NOT speaking for the club. The club has asked for a meeting with Joyer.

You know your proud of yourself
When you announce it on Twitter at 9:45 on a Friday night.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
What a bunch of douches.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
Frankly I'm suprised...
…that any of them have a Twitter account. I figured they would announced it on Friendster.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
Who is Jeff Nelson?

elefantstn - January 6, 2012

That is seriously the official announcement.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
Thanks!
And awesome….and by awesome, I mean classy. Can’t wait for someone to tweet that Bradley and everybody else have been let go….. To quote Ron Burgandy….“You stay classy PSU”
GMac14 - January 6, 2012
kind of like firing the legendary HC at 10pm on a Wednesday?

And announce it when classes were in session.

Meh
the damage has been done. If students riot over this, then they’re the idiots everyone thought they are.

belbijou - January 6, 2012
That would be great
Around my age and interests, well PSU would be covered so that is good.

Aries...
You should ask the BSD Mods to set up a BSD side-bar dating service. The dates could be going to the PSU football games…

belbijou - January 6, 2012
Met her in person at the PSU/Bama game in Tuscaloosa
We tailgated together! I have also met AdamShell in person. And some cool people from BHGP. You need to check that site out. Hilarious. And they are very cool to PSU fans who participate.
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
we were talking about that earlier today
what’s up with her?
belbijou - January 6, 2012
Paige poped up the other day

PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
my husband made me ask
belbijou - January 6, 2012
No worries.
Can’t get him tix, either. Sorry!!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
how often do you get hit up for tix? how annoying is that?
belbijou - January 6, 2012
Not very often, truly.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
is that really your wife?
I can’t tell if you are serious or not
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
who are you married to?
belbijou - January 6, 2012
My wife doesn't post --
she reads under my log-in ID — so no handle for her.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Despite being pissed at the leaks
PSU had no leverage at this point except to ask if he would either start work full time day 1 or retain key assistants to continue recruiting and on campus leadership. If BOB sad yes to either of those then PSU had to hand him his contract or they would never get a call back from the NFL.
Charnold - January 6, 2012
Guess they should have gone after Eagles O-coordinator
Marty Morningweig for 2 reasons…
Wildcatamounts - January 6, 2012
Something tells me that the Pats will try to find a way to shuffle him out early.
Doug Marrone was originally order to stay with the Saints for the balance of the year but they let him go as it was obviously a distraction to them and a potential playoff run.
But Peyton was calling the plays anyway.
Charnold - January 6, 2012
The good news about this 10 pm decision:

Well
I guess everyone should be rooting for the Steelers next week so we can get this party started sooner
farrellpsu - January 6, 2012
You mean the Bengals.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
Also, honest question.
Better for recruiting, BOB actually recruiting? Or making his calls from the super bowl?
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
The Patriots aren't going to the Super Bowl.
It’s killing me, but I think it’s Baltimore’s year.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
I don't think they are.
I’m asking which would be better for recruiting.
PSUinBOSSton - January 6, 2012
That worked for Weiss.
But then Weiss sucked. The competent, big name college recruiters will use that against no name BOB, and I think that tactic will be effective.
PSUEnrg02 - January 6, 2012
you think the bengals are winning this week?

letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Last night I was watching the Kardashians while keeping up with BSD
It was a great night.

We had a Teen Mom/Sugar Bowl open thread last year.
It was epic.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
that was fun
but I doubt it is regular viewing for most people here, I disapprove of that show
wow, did I just say that? Fuck I am old
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
for real?
That is one CRAAAAZY combo thread, but I bet it was interesting.
belbijou - January 6, 2012
I think Rambler started it
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Rambler started the Teen Mom thread...
…because I was boycotting the Sugar Bowl for letting ineligible players play.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
I got very drunk.
P.S. I’ve hit the part of the night where I start getting two drinks out of a can of soda instead of one.

Pretty face? Eh.... not so much
HUGE ASS & giant whore?
College kid tested, college kid approved!
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
she is a pretty girl
souless, greedy and whorish yes
but pretty.
It also helped her that her Mom jumped on the opportunity to make her famous from a Sex Tape. My Mom would have kicked my ass.
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Eh, she has a few too many miles on the odometer
for my tastes.
I’d sleep with her big ass in a second, but I’m not bringing her home to mom.
And, yeah: mom + sex tape = profit. Doesn’t seem quite right. Icky.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012

GMac14 - January 6, 2012
Well it's not like Bradley didn't handle the secondary and DCoord at the same time.
I’m not sure what rules there are about how many coaches you can have on staff or whatnot. But I would imagine if LJ Sr. was staying on, he wouldn’t wanna give up his bread and butter. Unless they bring in one Oline coach and split Ends and Tackles.

so maybe not so much.
tadhg - January 6, 2012
I've had too many drinks

This is just my knee-jerk reaction to hearing that we’re going to be treated to an ENTIRE staff of people that no other major program even considered hiring.
I mean, what could possibly go wrong with that?

Knowing this is a horrible situation either way, why is it important to make a “clean break” from everything previous? As far as i’m concerned, this was the fault of a rogue pedophile along with an incompetent administration and the Penn State community doesn’t deserve this. I really hope Tom Bradley is allowed to stay on staff. That guy deserves to stay.
Jigglz - January 6, 2012
TWO incompetent administrations
One that doesn’t properly report rape allegations, and another who conducted this parody of a HC search.
bubba0077 - January 6, 2012
Hey if you want to read something completely retarded about this:
Dave Jones thinks people would have also rejected Mike Leach because offense and stuff, actually I’m not entirely sure: http://blog.pennlive.com/davidjones/2012/01/penn_state_fans_have_stupid_re.html
The URL is great btw, in that it preserves the original headline phrasing.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
I am a little in love with Mike Leach
I loves me a Pirate. He got screwed, also.
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
I love him too
I would have killed to have him at PSU. He’s a great coach and a fantastic and interesting person in general.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
Did you read Spencer Hall’s article about spending a day with him on a boat? That is when I fell in love.
http://www.sbnation.com/2011/7/20/2282082/mike-leach-texas-tech-interview
Plus, Key West is my Happy Place
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Yeah, way ahead of you. Read his autobiography the day it came out too.
Unfortunately, watching him get railroaded by the incestuous ESPN news machine was good prep for the past few months.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
Dave Jones is a moron
I would’ve been completely behind a Leach hire. Anyone that pisses alleged-hooker-murderer Craig James and likes pirates is a-ok in my book.
06Lion - January 6, 2012
Leach is too western
I think. Like Peterson, I don’t think he’d come east.
reedjohnmiller - January 7, 2012 via mobile
oh man Mike Leach was my #1 choice!!!
But I’m not a Letterman and I’m not In-The-Know Booster.
Mr. Rosewater - January 7, 2012
Fuck it.
I’m all in.
Lets do this shit. Fuck Joyner. Fuck Lubert. Fuck the BoT.
O’brien is our coach, and if we want him to stay for the next 30 years, we need to give him a reason to.
WE ARE
mvrck - January 6, 2012
Agreed.
Welcome coach. I look forward to you joining the PSU family. Eventually.

hawaiipennstatefan - January 7, 2012
I just have to say
That it is very interesting how we all went from irate to “welcome to the family” in 24 hours.
belbijou - January 6, 2012
Because the anger is with the BoT.
And we’ve been sitting in this abusive relationship for 2 months now, we’re used to it.
mvrck - January 6, 2012
Not me.
There were plenty of better options for the kids on the team. This guy isn’t anywhere on the list. Rent, don’t buy. Leave that office alone. And don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
Smee - January 6, 2012
Don't get me wrong.
We’re totally going to leave them the next time they push us around.
mvrck - January 6, 2012
So are we in a Lifetime movie here?
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
You hadn't realized that by now?
mvrck - January 6, 2012
I think you have to have
at least one murder to qualify for Lifetime movie status
LAPSU - January 6, 2012
Joyner?
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
no, dude, JS
belbijou - January 6, 2012
I fgiured that was already a given
Without any of this other stuff.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
touche
belbijou - January 6, 2012
Not really
Just figured we would take out JS, as soon as we could. The least we can do.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
he has been remarkably quiet lately...
belbijou - January 6, 2012
I guess that is a good thing
But who knows what he and his lawyer are scheming for the trial.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Probably
out buying some new PSU gear for the trial
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
Projectile vomits.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
He better not wear a PSU tie to the tial
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Do ties go with track suits?
then I think we’re safe.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
He would make it work
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
he clearly is not concerned
with what people think. He would most certainly rock a track suite and tie
belbijou - January 6, 2012
he's on house arrest
he can’t be out and about like he was
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
He woudl still find a way to mess with stuff
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
We took pics in front of Joe's house
when we were in State College a few weeks ago.
I took a dump in front of Sandusky’s . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Well played Sir, well played.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Oh, ya did not
Nobody can find how to get to Sandusky’s house. They go to turn onto that road off College and go, “nah, can’t be down this thing.”
Smee - January 6, 2012
I followed the trail of used camera batteries,
dropped by all the news crews.
Oh, wait, they were all in front of Joe’s house, for no good reason . . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Because it's real now
hbeach08 - January 6, 2012
i haven't.
Fuck him if he isn’t full time.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
said just like someone in an abusive relationship
belbijou - January 6, 2012
K-state = Cowboys?
anyone else notice how Kansas State looks very similar to the Dallas Cowboys? Silver helmets… white jerseys… silver pants. Oh, and they’re losing.
tadhg - January 6, 2012
Yeah, and Jerry Jones went there back in the day
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
He went to Arkansas
jesse. - January 6, 2012
Damn
I knew that, with Mike Ditka as a roomie
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Jimmy Johnson
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Wow
I am really off, and saw little vignet at the begining of this game all about their rooming and whatnot.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Also
Jerry has to have nearly 20 years on Jimmy Johnson.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
they did a whole story before the game on how they were roommates in college
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Nope
Jimmy was born in 1943, he is old
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Mike Ditka went to Pitt.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
boo pitt

RE: Search Secrecy
The way espn and the media turned every rabbit fart from mount nittany into crawler material…..I would keep this process to myself too if for no other reason than to give them a fuck you.
ech2os - January 6, 2012
And I am referring......
To how espn and the media treated the coverage of the “breaking scandal”.
ech2os - January 6, 2012
Got to love the success of all the Patriots Offensive Coordinators as Head Coaches.
Did the committee take this into consideration?
bbpennstate10 - January 6, 2012
Ok seriously.
We need to find a shipping address for this guy, and start a BSD wardrobe drive.
Nothing mean or malicious. Just a very subtle hint that we’ve got your back as long as you’re in the Blue and White.
mvrck - January 6, 2012
I’ll be sending a fake beard.
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
I'm sure you can jsut send it to Lasch

GMac14 - January 6, 2012
LJ or Vandy.
Chris Grovich - January 6, 2012
It's McQueary.
Trust me on this one.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Is he still in hiding?
belbijou - January 6, 2012
He is in the witless

That is not a typo.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Why the eff would any of them want to stay?

Officially up on gopsusports.com now.

I’ll bet any takers an internet pony bottle that Bradley will be retained as D-coordinator.
Joe 96alum - January 6, 2012
I'll see your internet pony bottle
and raise you threeve BSD dollars.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
Eh, I'll check.
Not totally sure if Bradley would actually agree to this, but it would definitely smooth the transition. So that’s why I bet a pony bottle instead of a pitcher.

@sekrah
" A source close to Les Miles representation leaked to me that he was interested. I assumed wrongly PSU would step up."
PSUinOH - January 6, 2012 via mobile
This?
This is why people shouldn’t assume Twitter is the world’s greatest source of info.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
I didn't think anyone did
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Judging by
the amount of people – this board included – who got their panties in a bunch over every rumor they heard, I’d argue lots of people take tweets as true facts.
Sometimes it’s a great way to instantly break info. Other times, it’s a way to be clueless.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
Over/under on how many seasons it will take before Nike gets their hooks in the athletic department
and our beloved uniforms undergo an overhaul.
I swear, that will be the absolute last straw. SHIT. WILL. BURN.
06Lion - January 6, 2012
Nike has no interest in fucking with our uniforms.
There is no place in all of sport where their logo is more prominent than our uniforms. It’s the only thing that is not blue on the jerseys.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
I am not as optimistic.
A couple years of shitty attendance and low donations, and Joyner is suddenly offering our uniforms up to Nike’s design team for a big fat check.
06Lion - January 6, 2012
Nike does that to make money.
Not to pay money. We should be fine from a uniform prospective.
jesse. - January 6, 2012
hopefully joyner won't be here long enough for that to happen...
belbijou - January 6, 2012
I was talking to Spider last year

letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
Badgers for me..... even though Bielema is a douch
Nittany Merle - January 6, 2012
I'll just chuck the whole sport if that happens.
Or maybe start making an effort to see my actual alma mater play. 1-AA, but the tickets are cheaper.
All of our sports have classy simple uniforms. Volleyball, basketball, soccer, etc. it’s the brand.
Changing them would be like changing the Yankees uniforms. I hate the Yankees, but they have the best uniforms.
reedjohnmiller - January 7, 2012 via mobile
A little late to the party
As much as I hate this hire, I’d like to wish BOB the best of luck. I hope he proves a vast majority of us wrong.
Dan Vecellio - January 6, 2012
I think most of us don't hate BOB, per se,
just angry over him as Joyner’s choice and how Joyner has treated this whole search . . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Anyone watching this game?
And does anyone think it is ironic that Tim Brewster is giving expert opinions on what the coaches should do in certain downs?
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Wife and I are watching.
Rooting for K-State — the anti-SEC team. Plus, Bill Snyder reminds us of a young Joe Paterno.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Yeah I respect Bill Snyder
Seems like a great coach.
And that was just a sick catch on the sidelines.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Yeah, gotta give credit where due.
Still not rooting for the Hawgs.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Yeah I always rout against the SEC, in all games.

PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012

Not sure where they are now with it, but I believe the Letterman’s Club or someone was trying to get the field changed.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
I would be with you
except Joe had said he did not want this
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012

want this done out of love for Joe.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
But what about General Beaver!!
I shit you not, there’s a group of people who are against changing it because they want to honor Gen Beaver. Who died in 1914 and has 409 fewer career wins at the division 1 level.
http://www.psu.edu/ur/about/markers/others/jamesbeaver.html
reedjohnmiller - January 7, 2012 via mobile
The stadium stays Beaver,
the field is JVP Field.
The stadium name needs to stay the same so opposing teams can whine, “I got screwed at the Beaver.”
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Over/Under on the Joe Paterno chants for the first game next year??
Also, someone beter get in BOB’s ear and tell him about who comes off the bus first.
PSU_Brian - January 6, 2012
Seriously
I love our traditions. The blue bus, the uniforms, all of it.
I’m all for welcoming our new coach. Until he fucks with the uniforms.
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
Dont even think about touching the uniforms..
although I am a fan of the white piping on the blue unis and vice versa for the white.
PSU_Brian - January 6, 2012
he won't. heck, that may be oart of the contract.
Nittany Merle - January 6, 2012
BUT
I wouldn’t be opposed to the occasional blue pants with the white road uni.
Steebo4PSU - January 7, 2012
Total opposite.
I’d be ok with road unis that are total opposite of our homes – blue helmet, white stripe, white shirts, blue pants. Black socks. Not white shoes, however. That would look naff.
reedjohnmiller - January 7, 2012 via mobile
thats cool, but
NEVER white shoes.
Steebo4PSU - January 7, 2012

Nittany Merle - January 6, 2012
From your keyboard to
God’s screen, Merle.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
My brother just sent me this which is on Lions24/7
Rundown from Mckinley on ESPN:
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Great
Wonder how many more “Plan” guys we had before we unearthed the otherwise unwanted BOB?
Tailgate Shogun - January 6, 2012
One name that is not on there
Is Tom Clements, which I was under the impression had like 3 interviews.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Another is Roman
elefantstn - January 6, 2012
What do you mean, Roman?
That is Greek to me . . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012

AriesGD - January 6, 2012
I'm from Pennsylvania,
my wife is from North Carolina. She thought I was foreign because when we were dating I had Roman hands. ;-D
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Never heard that one
Spent 2 years in Greensboro for grad school, i thought it was funny that they thought i had an accent.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
We live 20 miles south of GSO,
and, yes, the locals have the accent, not I (or you, it sounds like).
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Well I am originally from
An hour north of Philly, so I guess to them I do have one.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
25 miles north of Williamsport for me.
From rural part of PA to rural part of NC, with a few detours through US Army and Northern VA.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Was that all BS, or was it real? We'll probably never know.
Nittany Merle - January 6, 2012
Clements I mean... and Roman.
Nittany Merle - January 6, 2012
Which is why
Lubert should have been lead on all of this. I said this on an earlier thread, but filthy rich guys are always the best negotiators. It doesn’t surprise me at all that he was the best part of the committee
LAPSU - January 6, 2012
THIS GUY, I CALL THIS GUY "FUCK YOU" BECAUSE HE NEEDS AN OUT CLAUSE.
WorldBFat - January 6, 2012
I don't know
If you ask me, do you want Beef Obrady or Richt… Well… I’d pick Richt, but it would have been awefully close. And I don’t hold it against the committee for not dealing with Gruden if he had an automatic out for three teams — that’s horseshit. 1 team maybe, but 3?
millzners - January 6, 2012
Not a big Gruden fan
but he would have had the stroke to get us past this whole bogus “crisis” thing faster than BOB will.
ChuckyJon would have grabbed the microphone and told the media, “Back off — we are playing football, not who knew what when.”PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Who's to say
BOB won’t do the same. He did have the balls to ream out Brady after he threw a bad pass in the red zone.
LAPSU - January 6, 2012
I hope BoB does the same
The first time someone, cough giger couch, says or asks something stupid, just give it to them. lay down the law the first time and they will know who they are dealing with.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
I hope you guys are right.
I got a job one time where I replaced someone who had been there for 20 years. I was miserable because folks kept telling me, “That’s not what X did.” and I tried to do as she had done. I finally starting doing things my way, and (politely) telling people that’s how it was going to be. Things got much better shortly thereafter,
They fired me. LOL!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
I am realizing
all that BOB is going to have to learn in a short period of time. This is why he needs Penn State people around him.
PSU_Brian - January 6, 2012
Maybe the leak was a good thing? It allowed us to work out our rage. Now many of us are moving on to acceptance and support.
I wish BOB the best of luck. He can start by saying good things at the presser tomorrow. ;-)
michellemtsu - January 6, 2012
He better show up in a suit and tie!
He loses even more points if he doesn’t.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012

AriesGD - January 6, 2012

Nittany Merle - January 6, 2012
Joyner is a BOT puppet

PSU_Brian - January 6, 2012
Agreed!
/OccupyPSUBoardroom.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
I don't believe that Gruden story above
I’m not impressed with his job as AD, but I think there’s now a tendency to paint him as even worse than he is.
reedjohnmiller - January 7, 2012 via mobile

ESpin is saying it's 'official official"
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7434520/penn-state-nittany-lions-officially-hires-bill-obrien-new-coach
WarBuck46410 - January 6, 2012
Gopsusports.com
Has a story confirming also, and that is the offical PSU sports page.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
“I am thrilled to be the head coach of the Penn State football program,” O’Brien said in a statement. “As head coach of this special football program, it is my responsibility to ensure that this program represents the highest level of character, respect and integrity in everything we do.”
“There is tremendous pride in Penn State football and (we) will never, ever take that for granted,” O’Brien said.
WarBuck46410 - January 6, 2012
“We have found the man to take Penn State football forward,” acting athletic director David Joyner said. “Needless to say, we have been looking for someone with some very special qualities, beginning with a heart that beats to the values and vision of Penn State University and our Penn State football legacy and tradition.”
WarBuck46410 - January 6, 2012
Not to parse every one of Joint-smoker's comments
but Penn State football does not need to be taken “forward” — we are already ahead of the pack in so many ways, thanks to JVP.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
Every new coach says that, always seems stupid to say
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
That was part of Joyner's statement --
he should stop apologizing, implicitly and explicitly, for Penn State and Penn State football.
Douchea.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 6, 2012
I re-read the statement
And realized it was Joyner that said it, he is a complete douche.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012

WarBuck46410 - January 6, 2012
No I just needed to read better, you were fine.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
yes!
keep “douchea” alive!
letsgopsu - January 6, 2012
I like him more and more
The correct way to start things off.
AriesGD - January 6, 2012
Me too
And to be fair, we have been struggling to move the football forward as of late.
I don’t know if all that is quite true, but it may be.

well, it has been widely publicized that Galen and Anderson were planning on retiring once Joe was gone anyway
And I’m pretty sure I’ve heard multiple times that Jay and Tom did NOT get along, so honestly I think all three would have been gone for any coach.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012

WarBuck46410 - January 6, 2012
Where could he go?
There are no D1A openings left.
Mt Lebanon HS needs a coach.
Tons of NFL jobs opening now.
Anything in 1-AA?
reedjohnmiller - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Iowa needs a DC
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
I think he'll be alright
Nittany Merle - January 7, 2012
And I will probably be a fan of whatever school he goes to,
unless it’s Pitt . . . . I.just.can’t.root.for.the.Pansies.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
in general, not completely awful timing on this; the announcement made during/@end of Cotton Bowl.
gets covered tonight; will lead the morning sports news; then the presser at 11:30.
maybe I get plastered for that, but my opinion.
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
at this point, meh
I don’t think expectations are very high on how the Admin will handle anything
letsgopsu - January 7, 2012
Nobody is watching this
Nobody is watching the morning sports news
Maybe halftime of tomorrow’s NFL games?
elefantstn - January 7, 2012

AriesGD - January 7, 2012
Night, letsgo.
Not too far behind you . . . not literally, of course. K State losing to the Razorbacks — rats.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Same here
Bad ending to that game, winner wise. Had to change to something else.
AriesGD - January 7, 2012
g'nite all. sleep well
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
So you don't want to know
K-State QB just threw an INT that Arky ran back to like the Cat 15. 6 secs left. Hopefully Arky takes a knee.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Good thing I changed it
To bad nothing else really on.
AriesGD - January 7, 2012
btw, where are the MODs. Slackers are probably sleeping at near-midnight; there should be a new thread posted. Don't they know that the PSU admin issues press releases at 11 pm-midnight? LOL
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
Clealry this thread is full
We need to discuss any and all intricacies of that presser….ahhh screw it.
AriesGD - January 7, 2012

Lucky bastard
Wish I was living in SC. Hopefully by this summer.
AriesGD - January 7, 2012
I live in Pittsburgh
My mom and dad live in State College. We’re celebrating Orthodox Christmas tomorrow. That, and I’m going to Champs. For pizza. I like Champs pizza.
jesse. - January 7, 2012
So good times will be had by all this weekend
Nice.
AriesGD - January 7, 2012

I'm not buying the "he does nothing" line
If he steals some of the Pats other offensive assistants, that would probably be ok too.
reedjohnmiller - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Bob Ley is such a douche...
Listen to the narrative of the moderator: http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=7433142
It’s like listening to vultures eating road kill. We’re “insular”. Penn State is “damaged”. Every adjective is negative. At the end, I’m left feeling like we were lucky to get BOB…let alone a real coach.
I hate ESPN…I feel like they crapped in my mouth.
87Townie - January 7, 2012
