This is it, folks. Penn State has a new head coach. A Brown University grad. An offensive coordinator. No previous ties to Penn State before arriving in Happy Valley.
Everybody... meet Bill O'Brien.

I know many of you are pissed off...
but I’m personally trying to look forward, not back. So let’s welcome BOB to the Penn State family.
Mike Pettigano - January 7, 2012
Totally agree with this statement.
Kerry Collins nailed it!
DeuceisLoose926 - January 7, 2012
100% Agree
He gets my support. I also won’t forget how poor our offense has been in the last decade when not led by senior QB’s named Clark or Robinson and how we seem to put together 1 solid O-Line every 4 years. Let’s give him a chance.
Dlkshanghai - January 7, 2012
The offense was better when Clark was a junior...
psume06 - January 7, 2012
better O line and receivers
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Agree, but making the point that it doesn't need to be a senior QB.
psume06 - January 7, 2012
Penn St. picked a good one the last time. Who knows, BOB may be around for a long time.
It’s about Penn St. and rallying behind that first of all, might as well get behind BOB now.
mjtig - January 7, 2012
Good point, mjtig
Is anyone on here old enough to remember the reaction to the Paterno hiring in 1966? Obviously it was a different world in a lot of ways, but was he easily accepted since he had been here for 16 years already? Was there a group wanting to go outside of the current staff? DerryPharmer, are you old enough to recall the Paterno hiring?
IndianaLion - January 7, 2012
Local Susquehannock tribesmen and French fur-trappers
in a rare display of agreement, unanimously supported the hire.
Salt - January 7, 2012
so, by the reaction I'm not sure if you are not warming up right away lol. LSU guy here....
and I got behind Curly Hallman, Gerry Dinardo, Mike Archer, as I did Saban and Miles when they were hired respectively (seen the bad as I have the good). It was about getting behind LSU first and foremost. Get behind your team is the point. He is your coach.
mjtig - January 7, 2012
*I'm not sure if you are warming up right away lol...
mjtig - January 7, 2012
I agree as well
This sight has been unreadable the past 2 days. You can choose to live in the past or look forward to the future. I choose the latter. Best wishes Coach O’Brien!
ljdevine - January 7, 2012
I agree.
Trashing BOB from the beginning will not help things.
psu2007 - January 7, 2012
Out with a whimper
Way to put up a fight, kids.
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
I'm somewhere in between, Buch.
BOB is selected, for better or worse, so I will try to swallow hard and support him/the new staff. BUT, I still despise Joyner/search committee/BoT for the arrogant and heavy-handed way of dealing with this whole situation. Because of that, I reserve the right to make BOB the lightning rod for any future criticism for failure or praise for success.
Waiting-and-seeing has helped me so far; I’m holding to that in this circumstance.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Grow up
Mike Pettigano - January 7, 2012 via mobile
C'mon, MP, cut Buch some slack.
We all have to get through the mourning process the best way we can.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Real nice, Mik'e.
Real nice. Am I now among those whose opinion is no longer welcome here? I’d hoped to have earned a little leeway to deviate from the party line, especially because I feel I’ve gone out of my way to reasonably articulate my view and justify my reasoning for it.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to hang around this thread like a turd in the punch bowl, raining on everyone’s parade of good feelings. Of course I want to see O’Brien succeed, because it means the team and program are succeeding. But for me, welcoming him today with open arms is tantamount to welcoming our new, alien overlords.
HAIL ANTS.
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
I, for one, welcome our new butt chin overlords
as long as I don’t have to look at him
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
I see my comment was justified
I said nothing to provoke your comments, but you found it necessary to not only insult my own opinion (the outrageous idea of welcoming BOB) but then play the victim, falsely accusing me of doing exactly what you just did, when I call you out on it?
Grow. Up.
Mike Pettigano - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Maybe it was
I can see where it seemed like I was insulting you personally – I didn’t mean it like that – it was out of frustration and anger generally, not directed at you. I wasn’t “playing the victim” as much as asking for, as ‘84 put it, “some slack?” Get me? The whole Simpsons reference at the end was an attempt to bury the hatchet, not ratchet up the tone of the rhetoric. Please accept that my emotion here is driven only by my love of PSU, and I’m not trying to call you out or marginalize you. Sorry if it came across that way – I realize why I did.
The presser’s about to start. We cool?
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
I'm always cool
I’m pissed off at the admins also, but BOB is NOT the guy to take it out on.
BOT elections are coming up. That’s when we strike back.
Mike Pettigano - January 7, 2012
Word.
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
Lavar for BoT!
Salt - January 7, 2012
Wow...
What a dick. I agree with 84 wholeheartedly. At 42 I’ve earned the right to look at things with a critical eye and call bullshit when its patently obvious. This, my friends, is bullshit.
At the end of the day I will support BoB because Penn State is my alma mater…but if he fails I will expect his tenure to be short.
pennst92 - January 7, 2012
Or the next guy, or the guy after
Or anybody not named Joe Paterno, for that matter.
Because HE is the only one allowed to have more than one losing season at Penn State. Ever.
misdreavus79 - January 8, 2012
OK, O'Brien. Sell me on all of this.
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
Live on ESPNews at 1130 est
brubby - January 7, 2012
Or, for those of you who, like myself, have sworn off ESP(anything):
B10 Network also carrying the presser.
ljdevine - January 7, 2012
#BOBOBOBOBOBOBOBOBOBOBOB
It’s happening, I’m ready to make the best of it.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Dr.TobiasFunke - January 7, 2012
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
Can't wait to see how O'Brien handles this
Glad to see he’s keeping Vandy on the staff, that’s a definite plus
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Or at least, since we're targeting Nova' former DL coach, now with UMASS, my guess would be the LJ Sr. is out
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
unless LJSr is DC
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Thinking about it more, it seems like this makes more sense
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
I would love LJ Sr. To stay as DC!
He’s one of our best recruiters and deserves it.
runpre1005 - January 7, 2012
am i missing something
Where did you see that Vandy was retained?
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
Pure guess, based on us targeting a DL coach
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Oh sorry just read it like it was stated as fact lol. Hope your right though. Good possiblity considering he didn’t get a head coaching job this year.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
O'Brien's BOSS first move:
Thanks everyone for welcoming him to Penn State, looks right in the camera, says “Sorry, Bill. I quit. Got more important things to do”, picks up a hidden cell phone, and calls Armani Reeves live.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
This would be nothing short of awesome
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Would be better
if he pile drives Joyner through a folding table, but yeah. awesome.
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
Then picks up a folding chair and bashes him over the head
jman07 - January 7, 2012
Hoping for the best
The whole process was about as organized as a goat rodeo, but it’s time to support the team. It’d be foolish to hope O’Brien fails. Let’s go state!
sReck3 - January 7, 2012
Herding cats man
jman07 - January 7, 2012
This should be...
fun.PSU is run like a cat rodeo, but let’s go BOB! Just don’t RichRod it and ignore the traditions and legacy Paterno built.
Esteban d' Amur - January 7, 2012
ESPN says HEAVY police presence at NL Inn
Are they expecting an assassination attempt or something???
brubby - January 7, 2012
well without drama
they would just be a sports show
farrellpsu - January 7, 2012
Someone might get hit by a pebble.
psu2007 - January 7, 2012
ESPN Sucks

/Makesmovewhilefatcopisdistracted
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
I laughed so hard!
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
They are......
probably expecting JS to turn up wearing a new PS Brand outfit….“New at 11:30, Sandusky and wife wear identical Womens Lacrosse unis to the BOB conference.”
DerryPharmer - January 7, 2012
Let the settling begin!
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
What if JoePa
comes in a hits him with a chair?
farrellpsu - January 7, 2012
Let's be correct...a wheel chair.
DerryPharmer - January 7, 2012
Hoveround?
It does go indoors, outdoors, all over town!
dbl5030 - January 7, 2012
Hit's Joyner? Or Pres Lackey?
I’m all for it.
jman07 - January 7, 2012
BOTH!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Who's reporting Vandy is staying??
brubby - January 7, 2012
BOB is tainted with the JS scandal already.
Look at who gets credit for the picture you posted, Mike: Elise AMENDOLA.
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
can someone link the live televised video, i have no tv :(

MillerTime89 - January 7, 2012
thanks!
Dr.TobiasFunke - January 7, 2012
Lets go baby...
brubby - January 7, 2012
Also, who am I talking about
- A hire that has no HC experience
- “Fiery, energetic” are phrases used to describe him
- Fanbase negatively reacts at first
- Former stop was OC
- Coached at Maryland
- Coached in the pros
- Maligned as a college OC for lack of scoring
10,000 BSD Bucks if anyone can guess who this is. It’s not Billy Bob
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Franklin?
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Yep
And we all see how that’s turning out. Wonderfully
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Dude is legit
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Shame we didn't hire him
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
It is, but he would've had so much negativity against him
Also, guy <3’s Vandy.
But really, after preaching about going it the “Vandy way” and changing the culture, then leaving
if we hired him, media would be PO’d, and easy to recruit against him
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Really wondering if we’ll ever find out who was contacted when, and if he was ever one of the targets. But like Ice said…
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
I'd pay a fortune to learn the real
story of who we talked to, who we offered, what the decision criteria was.
Would be fascinating to read.
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
No doubt
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
As I said below
There is an ESPN commenter talking like he knows. Personally, I think he’s full of shit (how could you possible confirm or discredit anything said?), but there is a small list this guy is saying we were in talks with.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Isn’t he a “lawyer” claiming to be privy to contract details? Wouldn’t revealing those get one, erm, disbarred or something?
I vote BS
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
He claims to have written 4 contracts for potential hires
I laughed out loud when he said that.
dbl5030 - January 7, 2012
Ben?
DerryPharmer - January 7, 2012
Psh, that guy?
Wanted the damn Turkey over the Eagle. Screw him
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Oh, James Franklin, Vandy's new HC
He’s bringing in a top 25 recruiting class and went 6-7 this year when he was supposed to win maybe 2 games. Vandy almost beat Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, Cincinnati, & Tennessee
unless that comment was just purely joking, I can’t tell :/
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Vandy did beat Arkansas...
and then decided to forfeit at the very end of the game.
But your point is made. That hire seems to be working out exceptionally well considering what any coach at Vandy would face given the climate before he got there.
I know one stipulation of him going there was a negotiation for heavy investment from the school (I went to grad school there). Honestly, now that everyone gets a degree, I think a lot of smart athletes are starting to consider how much their degree has to stand above others. I think that’s starting to also really start to work in Vandy’s favor. You get to play in the SEC and you get a good (and very expensive) degree to fall back on.
BNittsDeMilo - January 8, 2012
Wait
Vandy fans reacted to the hiring of their football coach?
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
so, for the TV; agree not watching on ESpin; Is BTN gonna take a break from the MSU/GA rerun?
i’ve got goPSU up in another tab, but see no place to click for the press conference video.
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
that was my way of asking for help.... g'morning all.
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
BTN is covering the presser.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
yes, i read that; i guess i'll just be patient, does BTN have "alternative" channels that I should be trying to find? or are we
expecting BTN to just cut away from this MSU/GA game replay?
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
cuz .... heavy sarcasm coming .... won't Michigan State fans be outraged if their replay is interrupted for a Penn State Press conference?
how are the PC police at the BTN gonna square that circle? this could be “bulletin board” material for the next Battle for the Land Grant Trophy.
/end rant about BTN excessive inclusiveness. LOL
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
Yeah, BTN will air it
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
But what about BTN in Ohio?
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
I'd imagine so, I thought the BTN aired the same thing everywhere
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Not sure
I do know that if a few games are on the BTN at the same time (early in the season), Ohio people will obviously get OSU or something like that instead of a PSU game or Nebraska game.
As soon as my daughter is done watching Handy Manny, I’ll turn it over and see…lol
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
GAH
Flipped over to BTN too soon and had to listen to the blabbing of Jon Gruden
Salt - January 7, 2012
Let me tell ya 'bout this guy, Bill O'Brien
I like this guy.
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
NATIONAL. FOOTBALL. LEAGUE.
CREDENTIALS.
Salt - January 7, 2012
NATIONAL FOOTB...
wait, sorry. Got excited.
dbl5030 - January 7, 2012
If you believe an anonymous commenter on ESPN (yes, you read that correctly)
We had a deal pretty much in place, but JG backed out when Joyner submarined it by being stubborn (which he apparently did more than once with different targets).
Again, anonymous commenter on ESPN. So take it FWIW.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
No way.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Pretty much.
Got into an argument on 247 with someone over the credibility of an ESPN commenter.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Haha, only explanation is that is was the same guy.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Heard that too
about JG and stoops brothers
Joyner sabotage
brubby - January 7, 2012
Must have been same reason the Saban deal fell through
LOLOL
Salt - January 7, 2012
Has anyone
checked with Sekrah about this for confirmation?
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
He mentioned something about "sources" close to Miles saying that Miles was interested
He said he figured PSU would inquire and then hire Miles
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
Saban heard we also had a signature ready contract
in front of Les Miles, and Joyner was conducting a race to see who would sign first.
Didn’t you read about this on twitter?
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
We were gonna get both
Saban as Head Coach, Miles as his Fitness Consigliere
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Makes perfect sense.
Bob Stoops as personal chef?
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
makes a mean PB&J, that Stoops guy!
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Bill O'Brien
is not a wartime consigliere
Salt - January 7, 2012
He does have that Tom Hagen vibe, no?
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Kudos to you sir
Or possibly Joyner is the Turk and O’Brien his Irish police Sgt.
pic15 - January 7, 2012
If Gruden wanted an out clause to pro teams, I'm glad we didn't hire him
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Doesn’t Bob want a head coaching job in the NFL as well? Seems we just didn’t put it on paper. And every contrat you can exit as history has proven in pro sports.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
Eh, maybe, a lot can happen in 3 years. Gruden's a pro for life
Bill, well, we’ll see.
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
True. I guess one thought is that if he doesn’t succeed here then he doesn’t get a job offer anyway so maybe its a mute point.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
LJSr
At the press conference. Gotta think that’s a good sign!
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
Either a good sign
or he has more class in his fingernail than most humans have in their entire body.
Because if I was getting fired, I’d be at the press conference…. with a flame thrower.
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
In the short run....
you’re going to have to let this guy have his shot. This is the 100th time I’ll say it so, “TB is not going to be the HC, the days of coaches ataying at one place for 10 years, let alone 61 years are long gone and the PSU FBHC job is now officially a stepping-stone job….this guy will either be fired or quit to go to the pros (”His dream job") before his gig is up". It’s the way of the sports world now and PSU, regardless of what some may think, is in it up to their eyeballs. Good luck to all involved.
DerryPharmer - January 7, 2012
Sadly, Derry
I think you may be right. We can still count our blessing for those 61 years though, and collectively find ways to preserve what was best about them, even as we join the rest of the college football world on the coaching carousel.
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
Mmmmmmm..... I wouldn't say we'll be a stepping stone job
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
I think this will be a stepping stone job only
If we don’t let a coach have the automony etc. that they need as a HC and pay him the going rate. If others want our HC, that’s a good thing. If we don’t pay him or give him the (appropriate) stature in the university, the coach will jump.
PaJoe - January 7, 2012
It's on!
psume06 - January 7, 2012
is this on any of the sirius-xm sports channels?
icavalera - January 7, 2012
And here we go...
Updates if you’re not following the CiL event above, or on Twitter.
LJSr. is in the house (a good sign), and Josh McDaniels is reportedly joining the pats for the playoffs, possibly signifying BOB has left the Pats (also a good sign, two days left for in-person recruiting until a week-long dead period).
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
First step: Call Stefon Diggs
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Don't see that one happening. But give it a shot.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
I agree, but certainly at least try it
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
He said he was interested in hearing from BOB.
psume06 - January 7, 2012
Yea, but hearing from and having actual interest is different.
Seems he’s SEC-bound.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
And tweeting that Patriots are hiring McDaniels for playoff run
That could mean O’Brien is coming right in
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
Does someone have a direct link to the video?
Not seeing it on gopsusports.com
coachKofPA - January 7, 2012

PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
Alright, so far, nothing bad from Erickson
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
It might not be right
but there’s pretty much nothing Erickson or Joyner can say right now to make me not despise them to their cores.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
OH JOY, HERE COMES JOYNER
And here come the pretzels…
06Lion - January 7, 2012

Looking at his notes a lot.
Saying the right things so far though I guess.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
Probably a bit of both
But I think he’s gotten more comfortable as he has gone on.
06Lion - January 7, 2012
hes nervous, wouldnt you be
pf289 - January 7, 2012
wouldn't you be nervous?
I’d be terrified! there’s 500k+ judging him right now
belbijou - January 7, 2012
I can honestly say I'd be terified
I’d like to think that the best guy for this job would be a little more confident, but I do understand that this is a little bit of a special circumstance.
Regardless, I’m going to give him a lot of slack because he’s talking about being tough and smart.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
I'd be nervous too, and I'm supposed to be great at talking
But he could stop acting he like’s a pendulum, what with the swaying back and forth
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
He's very nervous, but coming off very well.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Disagree about Erickson
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
Smart move starting with family...
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
Praising Erickson? Eh, I'll believe Bill
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012

brubby - January 7, 2012
HATE HATE HATE HATE
Joyner and Ericksson.
BOB sounds ok so far. Wish him well.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012

Salt - January 7, 2012
FYI.
O’Brien’s oldest son has lissencephaly, a rare brain development disorder.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
That's devastatingly sad.
Had some experience with it. Rough.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
Are there any coaches out there
without a kid with a rare disease? Man.
06Lion - January 7, 2012
For what it's worth
If he sends his son to State High, State High is supposed to have a very good, I guess, “Special Education” program. I can’t say I ever interacted with it, but it seems like it was a very high caliber program
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
he's 9 years old...
belbijou - January 7, 2012
Well I know, once he gets there
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
A lot of lissencephalics die during childhood.
It’s an extremely severe disease.
Salt - January 7, 2012
Ooooohhhhh....
Wow, my bad, I had no grasp of the level of disease
sorry, I assumed it was a developmental disorder. My apologies
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
No offense taken.
Some can live longer, but for the worst cases, school isn’t really a concern.
Salt - January 7, 2012
Sorry BOB
You’re losing me on the Joyner bullshit.
06Lion - January 7, 2012
Amen to that!
Other than that, so far, so good.
wonderlin - January 7, 2012
same
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Eh
He kinda has to say that in public. I’ll let him go, but yeah, I don’t think any of us have any praise for these jacka$$es
PSUPing - January 7, 2012
He reminds me of Michael Keaton, dont ask me why... I am Batman!
pmm156 - January 7, 2012
Holy Crap! he does
NC-LionFan - January 7, 2012
He looks like Ed DeChellis with that (lack of) hair. Just missing the little tuft in the front.
dbl5030 - January 7, 2012
And now he is done. Fuck Joyner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably be Shepherd's Pie or Irish Stew
Just stay away from Haggis
PaJoe - January 7, 2012
Oh no!
A PSU football coach thanks… Bill Belichick!

PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
Nice work mentioning alumni

Hiyoooo!
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
"Smart, tough, physical football team. A good situational team."
Gotta like that.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
What's complimentary football?
OH YES A CREATIVE DEFENSE
FUCK YEAH I LOVE THIS GUY
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Hm
Had no idea how hard hearing, officially, the phrase “Penn State’s Head Football coach” without Joe Paterno behind it would be.
irz813 - January 7, 2012
Lots of looks on defense.....multiple looks offense
Fantastic
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
Easy........
NC-LionFan - January 7, 2012
Oh shit
Getting onto Paterno now…tread lightly.
06Lion - January 7, 2012
This is going to be awesome....Paterno reference.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
And he's mentioning Joe....
Seriously…..this guy is winning me over.
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
so it sounds like BOB is going to start work as a PSU coach immediately
I like this for two reasons:
1. HELPS WITH RECRUITING
2. probably screws over the Patriots in the playoffs :D
psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
Think Brady will be alright

Heh
I hope not.

NC-LionFan - January 7, 2012
I am really starting to like this guy, BUT
He is god awful at public speaking
psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
That's okay with me.
I’d rather he not be a polished creeper.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
Did he just take erickson's water?

To throw it on him I hope?
jman07 - January 7, 2012
Nope. But Erickson did look concerned. It was funny
belbijou - January 7, 2012
Erickson = wicked witch of the east.
Throw water on E, who screams, “I’m melting!”
Crowd cheers wildly!!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Praising Paterno just sealed it for me
While I still hate Joyner, Erickson, et al with every bone in my body, I’m all in on supporting Bill O’Brien
LegalLion - January 7, 2012
Agreed.
He now has my support. He had the balls to praise Paterno, unlike the cowards next to him.
Btd121 - January 7, 2012
I think he knew that to get the fans and players behind him
he had to praise Joe, regardless what the admins wanted
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Still took guts.
ESPN had it in quotes as a headline 30 seconds after he said it.

He hit a home run in that speech
psu1313 - January 7, 2012

Great job.

psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
I agree with what Bill's saying about the Patriots, and I agree wholeheartedly
I’ve always liked a guy who sticks with his team
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
It is the honorable thing to do
JIMPSU - January 7, 2012
IMO it just speaks to his commttment to his dream of being an NFL HC.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012

But I’m pleased with the day.

I don't think they actually said...
psume06 - January 7, 2012

I would assume yes
PSUPing - January 7, 2012
That wasn’t made clear

Hasn't been clarified.
He just said that LJ will be part of the staff.
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
He didn't say
just that he’s staying
belbijou - January 7, 2012
I can't imagine he'd stay without getting promoted,
especially if the rumors about him having offers elsewhere.
dbl5030 - January 7, 2012
Well Larry is staying
So at least we’re not entirely screwed.
06Lion - January 7, 2012
He is coming off kind of KICK ASS
brubby - January 7, 2012
Still doesnt make any sense. If TB cant be the head coach cause they need to cut ties with the scandal then why keep LJ?
Again, i’m glad LJ is back, but the logic is not there.
pf289 - January 7, 2012
expecting logic??
JIMPSU - January 7, 2012
Exactly. Same with Joyner and Erickson.
It’s all complete bullshit.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
Again, not pissed at BOB just pissed at the white heads handling of the past 2 months.
pf289 - January 7, 2012
Of course.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
I don’t think this is why they picked BOB. They might have been going for young with an offensive background
belbijou - January 7, 2012
It is just a PR move, so the only important person is the head coach
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
Sorry, that's bullshit.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
I don't really believe that it is right thing to do, but it is probably the line of thinking behind the decision.
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
TB been there 33 years.
LJ something like 12. Doesn’t make much sense, but could be a factor.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Don't think LJ worked with Sandusky.
That’s probably a key point.
psume06 - January 7, 2012
PC
The media will not go after LJ like they would Bradley.
Btd121 - January 7, 2012
I REALLY hope BOB doesn't decide to keep JayPa on staff
as some kind of tribute to JoePa
psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
Bite your tongue. Why would you speak such a horrible thing.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
He can be the head water boy

I’d prefer he recruit immediately, but I won’’t knock a guy for loyalty.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
What a douchebag Cory Giger is.....
No wonder Joe hated the media
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
what did BOB say to Tom Brady?
he probably called him a gutless weenie
psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
One of the recruits' major complaints, is that they weren't being told anything definitive.
LJ is gonna hit the fucking trail like a boss.

PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Ok so id McDaniels is coming back
why is BOB staying?
irz813 - January 7, 2012
It might not be finalized yet, so he can’t confirm anything
belbijou - January 7, 2012
I imagine they won't say anything until it's a done deal, if it will become one.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
He’s right he has to stay and finish things. Thats what we would want.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
I think youre making too broad of a generalization
Someone already said it, the NFL is a business, and as much as college football may look like one too at times, this is a family. The Pats season doesnt depend on what he does in the next 3 weeks; PSU’s does
irz813 - January 7, 2012
Another douchebag question.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012

FB6244 - January 7, 2012

All for keeping Vandy and LJ. Also excited to renovate our offense.
sReck3 - January 7, 2012
He certainly has come off well today.
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012

PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012

ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
I would hope that was a requirement of the search committee

PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Who is this asshole with the transperancy question?
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
Silas just tweeted
“coach j is staying too!!”
belbijou - January 7, 2012
YESSSS I LOVE JAY PATERNO
In all seriousness, I’m happy Jay is staying
just hopefully not as a QB coach
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
I understand that as Coach Johnson.
06Lion - January 7, 2012
coach jis jaypa?
I assumed he meant LJ sr.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
think he meant J as in Johnson
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Praying this is sarcasm.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
Not in particular,
Jay gets 100% credit for the spread HD, and the offensive success in 05’, 08’, & 09’
I wouldn’t mind him staying on as an assistant. No official title, just a guy to be there
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
He may be good with schemes
but if you can’t develop a QB that can execute them, then it doesn’t work. There are teams out there that could have coached up a guy with Rob Bolden’s physical talents. I need to see someone who can at least go through a simple progression without panicking.
Salt - January 7, 2012
Oh yeah, which is why I'd dislike it if he stayed on as a QB coach
BUT, as a guy who can evaluate game film and help with game planning, I can get behind it
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Like I wrote last night
I think the opposite was true. I think he was good at getting what he could out of the guys he had to work with. I think he was a weak recruiter and a bad playcaller.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
He's a weak recruiter.
I think his dad had a larger hand in playcalling than we think.
I’d like to see what he can do on his own, whether it’s here or somewhere else.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
He was never the only playcaller.
The double OC thing was a shitshow. As far as recruiting, that’s tougher to evaluate. But it just seemed to me that we’ve had a string of QBs who would constantly make the same mistakes and never get any better. MRob was an exception because they ran a lot of read and option plays that year, but then they went away from that kind of offense (even though they’ve recruited a number of QBs with dual-threat abilities). Really Clark is the only guy who’s grown as a player in the current iteration of our offense.
Salt - January 7, 2012
IMO they did get better, they were just never great.
The mistakes people complained about are mistakes I see by every player at every level – even from Peyton Manning.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
I disagree with that.
I see two and three-star QBs all across the nation who can consistently hit an open guy across the middle. Who know when the pocket is holding up and when it is collapsing. It’s because their coaches put in a practice regimen that teaches them concepts in a simple manner, and reps the throws so that they can make them.
Salt - January 7, 2012
Jay and Galen playcalling
came down to rock/paper/scissors EVERY PLAY!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Which J??????? Oh God please mean LJ.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
I duno
that’s all he said
belbijou - January 7, 2012
I think he meant LJ too.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
I have heard several DL guys refer to LJ as Coach J
I would assume that’s what was meant. Sadly, I don’t think the players know much more than we do right now.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
Ha, yeah, pretty sure it's Johnson
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
I would love to see JayPa stay
I know that isn’t popular here, but I would like to see him here and be held to someone elses standard.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
You've got moxie kid.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
Always.
I saw moxie soda in New Hampshire, but didn’t buy it. Next time i will.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
you really dont want to trust me
3Yardout - January 7, 2012
I would love to see him around the program
But not as the QB coach. He’s a stand up guy and I think he’s a good person to have around our young men.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
Well, Joyner was caught off guard there
I do agree with Joyner saying you can’t release anything
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
That was an awful question
IMO, anyway.
tomatpsu - January 7, 2012 via iPhone app
So are we going to start secretly taping our opponents' practices?
nttnypride - January 7, 2012
Joyner should've smacked that guy from Harrisburg.

Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
Bust a Full Nelson on him.
SubLime - January 7, 2012
Uhh, better to start at a lower level as an HC
not learn OTJ at PSU.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
At least next season’s schedule seems relatively friendly to us
pf289 - January 7, 2012
I strongly disagree
No gimmes on the schedule. We don’t play Minnesota. And, there are no FCS schools on the schedule.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
I want to see them play Navy
Win or lose it wil be a good experience.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
That UVA team will be tough.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
so will Navy.
and Temple will be no slouch. The only game I’m pretty fully confident in is Indiana—but after this year, there’s no gimmes on that one.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
If Temple scores more than a FG on it it's a disappointment
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Exactly
We Are Penn State……UVA, Navy, Temple should not be tough games…….
Coach BOB is going to get his stuff together and I look forward to what he’s going to do
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
So you were disappointed in the last two years?
Temple is a much better football team. I expect a win, but I can’t guarantee it.
And I think I just remembered, are we not playing Temple next year?
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
We are. At home
Week 4, I think.
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
We playing Temple
but Temple losses 4/5 OLineman, and Bernard Pierce is gone.
Their offense should regress
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
This here.
Golden’s guys starting to filter out.
Salt - January 7, 2012
^Bernard Pierce is gone from temple
Therefore their offense will regress a great deal
ReddWhitenBlue - January 7, 2012

But after watching them barely beat Idaho in OT live last season, I’m not too worried.

Wrong answer.
You don’t “start” at Penn State. You begin your career here, but starting makes it sound like you plan on moving on. I don’t expect him to stay for life, but don’t consider this your “start”.
Succss With Honor Always - January 7, 2012
I haven't seen enough from him to counter his agent's quote about the NFL
being his dream job. I think he bolts after 5 if he has some success.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
I could handle 5 yeas, but nothing shorter.
Succss With Honor Always - January 7, 2012
We're dreaming if we think we are going to get JVP II.
Get used to it, folks — coaches will come and go at Penn State, just like everywhere else.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
I don't expect JVP2
But I do want someone who finds value in our program other than it being a stepping stone.
Succss With Honor Always - January 7, 2012
Agreed.
But we have what we have, for as long as we have it. Hopefully, if successful, for a long time. If unsuccessful, bye-bye!

Not as long as we have a conference.
That fact right there will make a difference. Also, I don’t think our fanbase is quite so populated with the unique type of jackassery that we see with ND.
Salt - January 7, 2012
Has nothing to do with it.
There’s a great chance we won’t see a coach last here more than five years again for a long time. Either because they bolted for the NFL or a program willing to pay them more, or because they sucked. As ND shows, there’s a low chance each of those will be a good hire. Continuity and family become harder and harder as more and more guys cycle through. ND isn’t special any more. They’ve lost their mystique. That’s the problem with coaching carousels.
Look at the NFL. The Steelers have had three coaches in like forty years. Other teams cycle through them constantly. No team has been more successful than the Steelers.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
Notre Dame has way more built in disadvantages than we do.
Primarily the size and scope of the institution.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
Also, they are in S. Bend, IN.
But they have always had a national following and draw for recruits and students. So, I look for them to return to prominence.
PaJoe - January 7, 2012
I guess I'm not clear on what you mean then.
When you say “Notre Dame”, I’m thinking “fall off the map because of a string of bad coaching hires, and simultaneously doomed to failure because of expectations that are impossible to live up to.” I think Notre Dame dug its own grave long before they went through Willingham and Weis. It’s their whole environment that brought that on them. We have a lot less of that to deal with. There are some similarities—I can see where you’re coming from, but I don’t think the two situations can be equated.
Salt - January 7, 2012
Hey, if he does well enough here that the NFL wants him, great.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
yeah idk if he plans on moving on or not, but it sure sounds like he does
and if he wants to stay here awhile, maybe he should choose his words better
psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
You didn't win games at Duke. You won game.
What a dumpster fire that Duke team was.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Nice.
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
Why do they (and BOB) keep giving Friegen credit? He didnt exactly do much.
pf289 - January 7, 2012
seriously?
Fridge was ACC coach of the year multiple times. Including the year he was fired, when his team had 9 wins.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Agreed.
Fridge was in a tough environment at Maryland.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
seconded
Salt - January 7, 2012
He took Maryland...
to a BCS game. Maryland!
Esteban d' Amur - January 7, 2012
re: JayPa
I think it is high time for Jay to go work at another program if he wants to spend his career in coaching. If Jay can find success elsewhere, it will change opinions about him in Nittany Nation. I’m not sure anything else would do it.
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
amen to that
PSU Jen - January 7, 2012 via iPhone app
Losing me again
with the ass kissing of the university leadership.
06Lion - January 7, 2012
he really kind of has to
the LAST thing you want as a new HC is to have the university leadership against you
psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
What do you expect?
He isn’t exactly going to insult the guys who just hired him.
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
he might be honest
he could have had a good experience. why else would he be willing to work with them?
belbijou - January 7, 2012
Eh that response worries me a bit
I really would like to hear how he got here.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN THE TEST YET?
It’s an hour long test. Take it yesterday, call Armani right now.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
ugh
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
What was he doing on the flight?
TAKE THE TEST
Tailgate Shogun - January 7, 2012
At least he seems to know a bit about NCAA rules
Nice little shot there at Noah Spence….anybody who decommitted….who wants to come back.
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
missed it - what did he say?
psume06 - January 7, 2012
He was talking about reaching out to any players who decommitted and who might want to come back to PSU now
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
"I can't mention recruits by name."
Etc.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
I thought he was referring to Schutt or Jarron Jones maybe
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Noah didn't decommit, contrary to what ESPN said in the Under Armour Bowl.
He was never committed. He’s talking about Joey O’Connor, JP Holtz, etc.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
really, that should have been done weeks ago
JIMPSU - January 7, 2012
Hope he passes the test lol.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
He mentioned OHIO
PLEASE RECRUIT OHIO
OH AND NOW HE’S SAYING NATIONAL RECRUITING
YESSSS
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Fun fact. Ohio is not a Mid-Atlantic state. But its ok, still like ya so far.

VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
yep

Where are the BSD'ers asking Q's?
They are at the presser, right?
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Ben's there, but didn't get any questions in.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Our man Ben.
Can’t wait until we get a full report.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
I think I just heard he'll be calling Noah Spence.
VinnyV11 - January 7, 2012
I was thinking the same thing.
runpre1005 - January 7, 2012
He wasn't part of the conference call?
I know this presser is important but come on…
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
This guy has done next to nothing.
I mean, sure, he just got “officially” hired last night, but with him heading off back to the Pats, when is he going to get this stuff done?
Also, TAKE THE TEST.
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
I like his answer for that
how can I ask a player to be committed to Penn State if I don’t stay committed to my current team
jetskijoe - January 7, 2012
Because that team doesn't need him for shit. They operated without an OC for a year
before they ‘gave him the position.’ This team has been at a huge disadvantage for the last two months. There’s a TON of work to be done, really quickly. And he’s going to try and ‘work us in.’ It’s BS. Penn State deserves better.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
I would expect the same from any other coach that is still coaching
Any NFL coach is going to stay on til there team is done. You never see a coach leave in the middle of the playoffs.
jetskijoe - January 7, 2012
That has nothing to do with his point.
He’s leading by example, following through on his commitment. It sucks for us, but you can’t blame him all that much.
Maybe he’s just waiting until the Pats hire McDaniels to jump ship and saying “the right things” until then.
dbl5030 - January 7, 2012
He at least put a lot of thought into how to answer those obvious questions before the presser.
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
Just not sure he's going to be able to get anything done for this class, that's all.
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
Final thoughs?
I like him a lot better than I thought I would. Still worried that he might bolt to the NFL at his first opportunity, but he seems honest at least. Keeping LJ is huge too, I think I can get behind this guy.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
His offers from the NFL
depend in large part on his success at State. He MUST succeed for us, imho, to get a sniff from the NFL.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Agreed.
I really like that he is going to evaluate the players to determine the system and not force a system when we don’t have the personnel.
Succss With Honor Always - January 7, 2012
I just hope he hires assistants that can TEACH and DEVELOP players.
We have athletes. I believe we could put together a powerful team no matter what the style is, if we just give the kids a coherent way to play and a structure where they can learn how to play.
Salt - January 7, 2012
Well
When I heard that Bill OBrien was hired, I was like

but then I was like

psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
How did he decide to pick LJ if he hasn't even met with the staff yet?
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
because he's a smart guy
LJ is a recruiting BOSS and he doesn’t want to lose this class
psu_all_day - January 7, 2012
He said LJ was the only one he met with so far.
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
He said he met with LJSr yestaerday
runpre1005 - January 7, 2012
Because LJ kicks that much ass
ICEICETHATGUY13 - January 7, 2012
Sounds like LJSr is the only one he met one on one so far
danpsu97 - January 7, 2012 via iPhone app
Keeping LJ was the biggest no brainer ever
Keeping LJ was the smartest move he could have possibly made.
I’m actually impressed that he convinced him to stay. I kind of thought he might leave after the way they treated Bradley.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
He hugged LJ
like grown men do
JIMPSU - January 7, 2012
He's not going to keep all of them.
So how does he know LJ is the best of them if he hasn’t met with the rest of them?
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
Stop being an engineer, Enrg02!
LOL!!!!!
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
They all have positions. He can hire them all if he wants. He only has to choose if he doesn't want them.
Dlkshanghai - January 7, 2012
Who says he's allowed?
jtothep - January 7, 2012
Because LJ said, if you don't keep me, I'm gonna whoop ya' ass
And then they hugged as grown men do.
jman07 - January 7, 2012
Perhaps Joyner isn't as clueless as everyone thinks.
O’Brien said there were many deep and private discussions about the program. Could it be that Joyner had a very specific discussion regarding the retenion of LJ Sr?
ljdevine - January 7, 2012
I'd like to believe that BOB
made that call, esp. since he is locked down with the Pats. I’d really be impressed if BOB made that a hiring condition, rather than Joyner thinking of it.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Either way...a great move.
Along with tears in my eyes with Joe’s mention, had me applauding the LJ announcement.
ljdevine - January 7, 2012
Reports are that LJ had his things packed, expecting he was going to be let go
It sounds like LJ had no idea he’d be asked to stay. That makes me think Joyner had nothing to do with it.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
OK let's play that out..
Had Joyner committed, one way or another, to Johnson or any of the other coaches, that would have thwarted O’Brien’s ability to assemble his own staff. I chose to believe this move was one of those intense discussions O’Brien referred to.
ljdevine - January 7, 2012
If he just got hired yesterday
I doubt he would have had time to take the test. I mean, he’s got 15,000 things going on and he’s trying to do them all. I think he sounded good and looks like things are going in the right direction. I wasn’t sold on him before, but that definitely helped in moving forward.
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
He used the phrase "past couple of days" at least once.
And was officially hired last night. And said he’ll take the test “today or tomorrow”. You can’t recruit until you take that test. Losing lots of ground by not being on the horn. I can tell you that some of these commits are getting tired of the lack of contact. They need something, ANYTHING.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Do you have to officially be hired before taking the test?
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
Probably.
That still gives him between 9p last night and “maybe tomorrow”. Should have taken it by now. One hour test. One. Hour.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
um ... yeabutttt ... can't take it he's not ready; thought he said he still had to study; big giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiANT ClusterF if he fails the test the first time.
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
Right. Would seem to have broken the silence on the situation if O'Brien is taking the NCAA recruit test
I’m sure some reporter somewhere would have found that out and reported it.
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
I give him a b or maybe B+.
Wife’s grade is B+/A-.
She likes that Joyner looked “constipated” during the end of conference pics — thinks BOB tweaked Joyner with his references to JoePa and all.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
B+ on the merits
but Paterno love and LJ announce bump him up to an A-
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
The LJ announcement was assume. A++ for that.
Dlkshanghai - January 7, 2012
Awesome, damn autocorrect.
Dlkshanghai - January 7, 2012
Contract is for 5 years, 950,000 dollars with built in 5 percent increase per twitter
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
And it all makes sense.
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
Yep
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Interesting.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
If this is true, it's embarrassing.
And doesn’t make me feel any better about him as a flight risk.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Buy out clause?
JIMPSU - January 7, 2012
No way he signed on for this low a salary with a big buy out. My guess is run of the mill e.g. totally affordable for any NFL team.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Wow....couldn't even break 1 mil for a new coach
No wonder nobody big wanted to come in
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
I fully think we could have.
But is this hire worth it?
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
I think they would have if they had the big-name hire
But they don’t, so this isn’t terrible. Don’t overpay a guy who doesn’t have a solid history of winning.
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
That's not his entire compensation package, most likely.
That’s the university contribution. He’ll get a Nike deal as well.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
And radio/TV deals.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
Well, honestly, we all kind of saw this coming.
Many would have been outraged had we paid him more.
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
No one who matters.
This means we’re being outspent by just about every program in the Big Ten:
http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/39131/a-look-at-big-ten-head-coaches-salaries
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Can't pay someone who hasn't been that successful.
Paying him 2 mil won’t make him a better coach. If he’s good, he’ll get there.
Adam Collyer - January 7, 2012
Yup
No need in overpaying him just yet
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
You commit to a good coach so he isn't looking around.
And more importantly, he’s underpaid even for his experience level. Hell, Minnesota is giving Kill $1.7MM.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Well that is a bit of a disparity, isn’t it? Oy
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Let's wins some games before we cross that bridge. If he wins, he'll get more. Now is probably not the time.
Dlkshanghai - January 7, 2012
Kill had college head coaching experience.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Northern Illinois. Has never once been on a BCS staff. Would you hire Kill before BOB? I wouldn’t.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
I don't know whether I would or not.
But HC experience, even at a lower level, helps.
Also, we don’t know how many if any outside monies are attached to Kill’s contract, but there are undoubtedly a lot for BOB’s…Joe was making almost double his salary.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
You’re more than welcome to your opinion, but if we had hired Jerry Kill today this site would have literally blown up. LIke with fire and stuff.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
I would have crammed
a pitchfork through my monitor.
jman07 - January 7, 2012
Kinda like it did with the BOB announcement
There were essentially 4000 comments worth of pitchforks and torches.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
And this salary means three very concerning things:
1. It’s highly likely part of the reason every turned them down was because the salary offer was always embarrassingly low.
2. Not paying him from the start means he’s a flight risk to the NFL. He can tripple his salary at even mediocre organization.
3. This makes me very, very concerned he’s been given a pathetic budget to go out and hire a staff.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Why would they give Chambers a big budget
but not BOB? That doesn’t make sense to me.
Though, very little has made sense to me.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
It’s a totally different scale, isn’t it? Both is avg salary and number of hires.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Somewhat disagree, KP.
I think it forces him to go after some young coaches — which aligns with many of the griping about the age/longevity/staleness of the current coaches.
Glass half-full, I guess.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
I mean, we have no way of knowing.
What is that budget is used for raises for LJ and Ron Vanderlinden? That’s worth it, to me.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
You're doing the wait and see thing, which is fine.
If paying the 11th highest salary in the Big Ten means we have the highest paid assistants, then I’ll redact all of this. I’m not optimistic.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Kill's comp may also be inflated simply because it's Minnesota
I’d imagine they have to overpay above market a bit to get a decent candidate to take on that challenge
danpsu97 - January 7, 2012 via iPhone app
He goes out...
and gets you to a BCS bowl game in the first two or three years, then you’ll see an extension and a raise. Couldn’t pay him 2 or 3 million off the bat, the moral crusaders on their high horses would have clucked their tongues at it.
Esteban d' Amur - January 7, 2012
So the status quo remains
Without the legendary coach to make us feel better about it
LegalLion - January 7, 2012
Lets be real here
spending money on a coach makes us pro-child rapeppfcpp - January 7, 2012
would you feel better about paying him a lot more money?
I definitely wouldn’t. If he earns it, he will get more money.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Yep.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
I wouldn't, at all.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
i agree, at this point
he isn’t worth it. why over pay for a bad hire? if he wins he will get more.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
Not at all
If this was the best we could do, and I support BOB after he won me over with this press conference, then the money is about right.
I just wonder if we got him partially because we weren’t committed to spending like the big boys.
LegalLion - January 7, 2012
This is my main concern
It would explain why we reportedly were only interested in him and Munchak.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
Every time he tweets, he gets a 5 percent raise?
Man, these times we live in.
Salt - January 7, 2012
+1
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Remember thats just salary not total compensation
JoePa’s total compensation was something like just over double of his base salary, so at that rate the real compensation would be more like 2 million per year.
LegalLion - January 7, 2012
This is true for all of these guys, though. When you compare this base to other BCS coaches it’s right at the very, very bottom.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Conversely.
Could PSU really pay this guy more than Paterno? If he does well in the two years, they’ll renegotiate the contract (especially if the NFL comes calling).
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
Of course they could.
Every other school in the big ten was paying their coach more than Joe.
And I don’t like starting with this low offer, it sets up a confrontational situation down the road if he succeeds. If you’re that down on his ability to perform at a Jerry Kill level, which is almost double his base, then why hire him?
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
At this point we should
just be happy if he succeeds and leave it at that.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
yeah
if he wins he’ll get paid. Or he’ll bolt and we’ll have saved some money.
skarocksoi - January 7, 2012
It's setting us up for trouble. Stability should have been a priority. It wasn't.
I’ve been snapping at people over this so I’ll calm down, but I really don’t like this. At all. An extra $500k goes a long way, and is chump change.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
I think I posted this above
but the University has released his full compensation (not just base) is about $2.3 mil/year
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Interesting. Where did that come from?
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
Nike + media deals.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
well he's getting 2.3 mil with the endorsements and everything
I hope thats enough.
skarocksoi - January 7, 2012
per numerous tweets now
with Nike & media compensation, he’ll make 2.3 mill per year
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Every other major program's coach is getting that extra boost too. It doesn't justify paying so low IMO.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
His lack of head coaching experience does though
I mean this really is a high risk/high reward type hire. If you don’t buy low on high risk, you’re doing it wrong
psuphysicist - January 7, 2012
it’s not high risk when you’re paying him this salary — you’re not risking anything. It’s just a cheap hire.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
Which begs the question
Did we not get anybody else because we wouldn’t spend?
I agree this guy shouldn’t get more because he isn’t proven but say Joyner set a ceiling of a mil or so? That would sure limit the options.
jman07 - January 7, 2012
I don't think so
I still believe STEP was set up to pay a lot for the new coach.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
I think even Joyner
is smart enough to realize you don’t set a low ceiling for each candidate. I’m very good at what I do, with 28 years of experience; a company that thinks they can get me for the price of a 25-year-old with six months’ experience as an intern is crazy.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Right, it's not like they would've offered Mark Richt $950,000
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
It still suggests they were low-balling people.
Kevin Powers - January 7, 2012
only if you want it to
to others it shows they paid what the guy was worth. i hate joyner, but i am not going to think this was the same package he offered everyone.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
exactly
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
But you're giving him the benefit of the doubt
which I am not giving him. Not until he does something that makes that warranted.
jman07 - January 8, 2012
I wouldnt be surprised if they did
but I think his pay is fair, for what he brings.
skarocksoi - January 7, 2012
I hope Vandy stays
NC-LionFan - January 7, 2012
Yes please
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Do we know if this is true. Someone wrote that he was staying earlier in this thread. Where was that info from?
Dlkshanghai - January 7, 2012
he made it up
belbijou - January 7, 2012
It was a guess since someone else said he was targeting a new DL coach,
which they thought would mean LJ was gone.
dbl5030 - January 7, 2012
I believe it was speculation at this point......
NC-LionFan - January 7, 2012
BTN guy just asked BOB about McDaniels being hired by NE
He seemed pretty surprised by it and didn’t really know how to answer it. Said soemthing about having to talk with Bellicheck about it. Made some small comment about being here the past few days and not knowing….
Sounds like maybe the Pats hired somebody without telling him. He may be back in SC before he realizes
GMac14 - January 7, 2012
might be getting the elbow out. Hey, he’ll have time to take the test
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
I don't know what NFL coaching rules are, but if BOB can hand off some duties, that would be huge.
Also, he needs to start naming those coaches immediately. LJ is a boss, but he can only do so much on the ground alone. 14 current commits and ~10 spots remaining, let alone keeping the players happy and in State College.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Question
What if he doesn’t fill all ten open spots? Save some for a bigger, more elite class next year?
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
I don't think it works that way
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
Think you can have 85 scholiies total
but no more than 25 in a year.
Not 100% sure about that . . .
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
*Unless you are in the SEC
smashtheguitar - January 7, 2012
That was my understanding as well.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
So it depends on how many kids leave after 2012.
No idea how many that might be.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Like 84 said, as long as we don’t sign over 25 next year. Not sure how many openings are anticipated next year
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
That is an option
Though usually only with a couple, which in the meantime can be used to reward a walk-on senior or two for busting their humps for years with a scholarship for their last year. But as a new guy I don’t know if he would have a clue who to reward.
LegalLion - January 7, 2012
That's possible, but then you're wasting scholarships.
You could give them to walk-ons and then rescind, but that’s kind of a dickish move, one Paterno never really used.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
I was under the impression we did give preferred walk-ons that sort of deal for a semester or so, as a tuition break for them, but I suppose I’m wrong.
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
No, I think that's right.
There have been walk-ons who get a scholarship for a year, then go back to walk-on status. I think Jeremy Boone was one of those. Hell, McGloin’s on scholarship now, that had to some from somewhere.
I don’t think we could pocket ten of them, but definitely a few.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
Well I was thinking like five or so. Can we really fill ten spots with quality players at this point? Of course it depends on how many open spots will already be available next year, and keeping it at 25 or under
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
The 25 number isn't going to be our problem, this year at least.
It’s the finding quality kids this late in the game.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Well I’m saying if BOB didn’t fill 85 this year, then 25 next year would perhaps be an issue.
I started this whole line of comments in consideration of Weis’ first class. Filled at the end with less than inspiring talent. Which isn’t ideal if that’s the case here
OmarLittle - January 7, 2012
Right, if we come up short, then we're looking at a big number next year.
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
Yea, that's sort of what I meant.
You don’t keep 10 spots open and hand them out. Also, I’m not entirely sure PSU used the one-semester and back method too frequently. Pretty sure Joe was a “once I give you a scholarship, it’s yours” kind of guy. If there were extras, they likely went to 5th year guys that had been solid contributors to the team (scout team, kick coverage, etc.)
Jeff Junstrom - January 7, 2012
BTN guy asked BOB about JoePa if he wants to talk to him
He said he would love to talk to JoePa and learn everything he can from hiim
jetskijoe - January 7, 2012
Ok, I'm checking out
The dog needs to go out. Apologies for my crankiness earlier; no harm intended. Thought he did as well as anyone could hope or expect. I am hopeful for a more exciting and diversified offense and happy that LJ is staying.
Here’s hoping!
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
You're cool, Buch.
I need to find a tree myself.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Audible multiple formation boner.
At the end of the BTN interview, the reporter said that in the Gator Bowl, O’Brien’s offense checked from a wishbone formation to a 5 WR. Our PSU QB’s weren’t allowed to change anything.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
Interesting point from the BTN guys, tho.
That multiple-formation schemes are tough to do at the CFB level. Wider range of talent at that level.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Dinardo's points were kind of spot-on.
College scheming is more about using talent advantages (if you have the talent) or neutralizing them (if you’re the little guy). NFL is about confusing the other team and getting them out of position, because everyone on the field is a top-tier athlete and has been drilled on your every tendency.
Also, college is about taking raw talent and developing it, and teaching players to do simple things right on a consistent basis.
Salt - January 7, 2012
Yep. Great post.
PSUEnrg02 - January 7, 2012
Agreed.
But BOB also said he would evaluate the players and adapt the offense accordingly, unlike DickRod saying he would implement his scheme, regardless of how it fit Michigan and the B1G style of play. +1 for BOB.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Definitely liked that statement
A lot. Cause theres no way we can come out and run the Pats O Scheme with what we have right now.
skarocksoi - January 7, 2012
Sure, but the "multiple multiple multiple" thing was too Weis-like for my tastes.
You can’t bring a whole new set of concepts to the table every week when you’re dealing with 18-22 year olds. You teach them a system and how to succeed in it, and keep their decision making simple, then practice in a way that you can expect them to execute consistently.
In that sense, RichRod was right. I honestly don’t think he failed because he ran a certain offensive scheme. He failed because he rubbed people the wrong way, and he was a complete cluster on defense. His offense would have been fine once he got a full team with his guys, his S&C program, and his system.
Salt - January 7, 2012
If we moved to five-wide, Bolden would poop his pants.
And then we’d call two timeouts.

DerryPharmer - January 7, 2012
Thankfully his son isn't old enough to be QB coach
rpm164 - January 7, 2012
Depends on how long he stays here!
joefromboalsburg - January 7, 2012
If he is still here 20+ years from now, I will happily welcome his son to the coaching staff.
VVeRPennState - January 7, 2012
You know
all the negativity wouldnt have existed had A) BOB’s side not leaked a ton of info about the hire before today or B) Joyner could adapt to the situation and move the PC up and dole out some info after the hire became known. Really, more bad PR.
skarocksoi - January 7, 2012
The negativity wouldn't have existed if Joyner wasn't a cock.
jman07 - January 7, 2012
that too
But I’m not sure thats something he could have changed.
skarocksoi - January 7, 2012
I think this is a lot of it.
People didn’t trust Joyner at all, because he comes off as such a dickhead. If Joyner had done things to convince people (and especially the lettermen) that he knew what he was doing, there would have been less backlash.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
Does Bolden Get A Start in the Blue/White Game?
Why didn’t anyone ask this question?
joefromboalsburg - January 7, 2012
Because he hasn't even met the players yet and you want him to start judging him?
That’d be a terrible question to ask him today, even more terrible if he actually answered it.
Rogue Nine - January 7, 2012
My first post on BSD...
had me trying to think of something cool and worthwhile, but I don’t have anything except for a question:
Will O’Brien be referred to as BOB or COB or both? COB would go along with the P1G and CGRN division names, except for the fact that we are in P1G…..
On a side-note – I love this site and have been trying to keep up with the articles/posts/comments for some time – I believe its called “trolling”? Anyway, a friend said its fun to read the comments during games, so I had to experience it first-hand with the Bowl – very entertaining – thanks to all!!!
psumike - January 7, 2012

dont go trolling
skarocksoi - January 7, 2012
I assume lurking is reading

Yes, you got it.

PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Thanks and ditto!

Trolling would be
“well at least we have a head coach who won’t poop his pants”
jman07 - January 7, 2012
Time will tell
joefromboalsburg - January 7, 2012
LOL

That's true, we don't know which local restaurants he's tried yet.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
He ate at CC Peppers.....

Speaking of food...
When I said the new Coach’s name to my wife, she said “Oh, I like Chicken O’Brien from Carrabba’s”….she isn’t a football fan, but can still appreciate my love for PSU and accompany me to all the homes games.
psumike - January 7, 2012
Your wife sounds hot.

Eh....
she’s okay…

I like BOB for now, but also like your common thread suggestion of COB.

I have to agree. Reading the comments on these boards have really kept me sane. I don’t respond nearly enough but aside from a few trolls this is a great forum.
Swiddy - January 7, 2012 via iPhone app
coaches
Big ten network mentioned this, do you think BOB will be an offensive coordinator or hire one? Stupid football question but if we hire an offensive coordinator what does the HC do during the game?
Swiddy - January 7, 2012 via iPhone app
As long as he only hires one
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
Hells yeah!!!!
DerryPharmer - January 7, 2012
I would think he will hire one
He seemed to be big on bouncing ideas back and forth with his staff. That would lead me to believe he wouldn’t run the offense all on his own.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
Chew out the officials.

Tom Bradley released a statement
Statement issued today from Coach Tom Bradley:
“Penn State has been my life. In my nearly four decades in Happy Valley, I went from a kid who loved football to a man who cherished and respected the game for the life lessons it taught. I learned many of those lessons under a great mentor and coach in Joe Paterno and I have dedicated my life to trying to help other young men, like myself, realize their potential both on and off the football field.
As a former player, I want to acknowledge and thank my teammates who have remained lifelong friends and confidants. Our friendship didn’t end when we hung up our blue and white jerseys – it only became stronger. As for my fellow coaches, the bond we share is irreplaceable in my life. And for that, I am incredibly grateful.
As a coach, I am most proud of how many of our players have gone onto lead lives dedicated to making this world a better place. I have always believed that football was just one part of preparing student athletes for the next chapter in their lives. Those chapters – lived by our players after the games ended – define the Penn State football tradition. I want to thank every one of our players who gave their talent, effort and most importantly, heart to Penn State. It has been my life’s privilege to coach you.
I also want to thank President Erickson, the Board of Trustees, Administrators and Faculty for the chance to be a part of Penn State University. This is a world class academic institution and I am proud to not only work here but to be an alumnus.
Finally, to our fans and alumni, your support has been incredible, not just this year but for the 37 years I have been here as a player and a coach. You make Beaver Stadium come alive. You are our heart. Make sure that our team – and our opponents – never forget it.
I wish Coach O’Brien all the best. No matter the challenges that the university may face, Penn State will always have my support. This is forever my home and forever my family. It is important that we come together to support our players and our university. Now is the time to demonstrate that we are – and always will be – Penn State. "

Bad news, Joyner's going to hold on this job as long as humanly possible.
Chris Grovich - January 7, 2012
Well then I might just have to remove him.
I am not afraid.
FB6244 - January 7, 2012
"I have the strength of 10

PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
I read that as
“Until we the alums reconfigure the BoT and they fire Joyner.” Three years, tops.
PSU_Lions_84 - January 7, 2012
Do alums have any power at all in removing him?
Other than closing my wallet that is. Which I will be doing until he and Erickson are gone. Thon will thank me.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
We can vote for Trustees
who can fire/hire administrators.

He is such a class act
He really deserved better in all of this. I would love to see him stick around, but I certainly see why he won’t.
I wish him all the best. He deserves it.
ppfcpp - January 7, 2012
I would like to see a movement
to have Bradley awarded Distinguished Alumni status; it’s the highest recognition a Penn Stater can achieve, and after everything he has done throughout his career, especially in leading the football program through a dark period of uncertainty with dignity and grace, I think he has earned it.
Call for nominations is in early Fall: http://alumni.psu.edu/awards/individual/daa/distinguished.htm
PSU_Buch - January 7, 2012
I believe in "innocent until proven guilty"
but this DA award needs to be revoked if/when: Gerald A. Sandusky ’66, ’71g H&HD

BOB is at the womens basketball game
I LIKE
mjs2103 - January 7, 2012
okay, about to risk getting banned. my guess: every woman on here will call me a "cad" and every guy on here will be secretly nodding in agreement.
Woman’s basketball would be better if the players wore uniforms similar to the uniforms worn by the Volleyball players with the shirts even less blouse-y. I’m not saying go all the way to beach volleyball or anything, but … we’ll you all know what I’m saying.
WarBuck46410 - January 7, 2012
how would it be "better"?
just curious on your use of that word. I’m sure it might be more enjoyable for you guys to watch, but that doesn’t make it “better”.
Cari Greene - January 7, 2012
Uhh... less wind-resistance = faster. Maybe.
Rogue Nine - January 7, 2012

1. why don’t the basketball ladies wear those unis?
2.

and
2. Wouldn’t men’s sports get the same benefit?
I’ve asked several big volley-ball fans about this and have never ever received a sensible answer.
