Meet The New Boss, Not Entirely Different From The Old Boss: Bill O'Brien Era At Penn State Begins

Officially announced by Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson in a late night tweet on Friday night and confirmed by this morning's introductory press conference, Massachusetts-born Bill O'Brien is the newest head coach at Penn State University. O'Brien has signed a five-year deal with Penn State, the terms of which are as-of-yet undisclosed.

O'Brien landed in State College yesterday evening aboard a University aircraft, and headed straight for the Bryce Jordan Center with his wife, Colleen, and son. He met with Nelson and other members of the administration before holding a conference call with the current players.

This morning's press conference is the first we've actually heard from O'Brien and acting athletic director Dave Joyner. But now that it's official, what do we know about Bill O'Brien?

Star-divide

As stated, O'Brien is a New Englander by birth, attended Brown in the early 1990's, and immediately went into coaching. He stayed at his alma mater for a couple of years, coaching tight ends and linebackers, before moving to a lengthy run in the ACC with three different teams.

From 1995 to 2002, O'Brien was on staff at Georgia Tech, starting as a graduate assistant and rising all the way to offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Over that span, the Yellow Jackets went 60-36, with a 3-3 mark in bowl games, which included a 35-28 victory over Notre Dame in the 1999 Gator Bowl. O'Brien also spent two years as recruiting coordinator for the Yellow Jacks (unfortunately, the major recruiting services only track data to 2002, so it's difficult to judge O'Brien's success as a recruiting coordinator).

After his eight seasons with Georgia Tech, O'Brien moved on to become the running backs coach at Maryland for two seasons, joining Ralph Friedgen's staff two years after Ron Vanderlinden was fired as head coach. The Terps went 15-9 in the two years O'Brien was on staff, and also included a 41-7 beatdown of West Virginia in the 2004 Gator Bowl.

O'Brien's next stop was an offensive coordinator position at Duke which also included coaching the quarterbacks. He held this spot for two rough years, as the Blue Devils went 1-22 over the two year span, which fell in the middle of a rough four year run for Duke under Ted Roof (no pun intended).

Sensing a change was in order, O'Brien left Duke and headed home, taking a job in the NFL with the New England Patriots as an offensive assistant. He occupied this spot, which had no real position group oversight, for a year before taking control of the wide receivers in 2008. In a year that saw Tom Brady go down with a season-ending injury, the Patriots were still able to notch two 1000-yard receivers in Wes Welker and Randy Moss.

A year later, following the departure of Josh McDaniels to Denver (who is rumored to be returning to New England to fill the eventually-vacant offensive coordinator spot), O'Brien took over the quarterback coaching duties for two years, before being named offensive coordinator in 2011. Over these three years the Patriots went 37-11, including three playoff berths, at least two Tom Brady awards (2009 Comeback Player of the Year, 2010 NFL MVP), and an offense that is dynamically potent, scoring over 500 points twice in three years.

Now O'Brien finds him self employed in not one envious coaching position, but two. The 2011 Patriots are knee-deep in a run at the Super Bowl, earning a first round bye and set to play Saturday, January 14th. Additionally, O'Brien will head the new regime at Penn State, one that will be looked upon to act quickly in certain aspects, namely recruiting.

What the makeup of the new staff will look like, as well as any carryover from the Joe Paterno era, remains to be seen. O'Brien mentioned retaining Larry Johnson, which is the second best thing he could have done (outside of leaving the Patriots and starting immediately). Having spent a number of years in college and the pros, O'Brien has built quite a coaching circle, so his options at staffing are myriad. However, until more is known, all we can do is welcome Coach O'Brien to Penn State, and wish him nothing but unbridled success in his time here.

Welcome Coach O'Brien

I think he won the press conference. I broke out into spontaneous applause on my recliner when he said that LJSr. was staying. From one follicularly challenged 42-year-old to another, welcome to Penn State, coach.

Welcome Coach

Conducted himself well and seems genuinely excited/stunned that he’s got this job.

I am a bit concerned about his contract details. Moreso because I fear PSU was playing it cheap, which is why we didn’t get a Petersen, Munchak or Richt.

He also said PSU is a good place to start

but hopefully it was just a poor choice of words on his part.

I think he was saying

that what better place it would there be to make your coaching debut than at PSU.

I took that as his addressing the lack of head coaching experience

Saying he had to start somewhere and that Penn State was as good a place as any.

I can't see paying big money

for a coach that you don’t know would do any better than BOB anyway. $950k is fair and I’m glad they didn’t spend more than that.

If that number was much higher

I think people would be going bonkers over him being overpaid. The total figure is $2.3 million/year, which seems about right to me.

Agreed

Just wish they would have opened the checkbook to lure a more established coach.

Ben tweeted that original details of contract were wrong

5 yr, 2.5 Mil annually. That’s quite a misprint from the $950,000 originally stated.

So I don’t think money will be an issue for him leaving

Not quite

The contract was correct. The Nike and tv/radio incentives make up the rest of that. So he’s receiving 950k from the university in salary, and the other 1.5 mill is coming from other incentives, making a 2.5 mill total compensation.

Money is money

Does it matter where it comes from? If he wins, he’ll get paid.

It only matters, in the sense that it still makes him underpaid

At least relative to other B1G coaches. Coaches from other schools get those kind of deals on top of salaries too. Therefore, when comparing salaries you can’t compare his total compensation to the base salary of other coaches – it’s misleading.

So how does his total compensation compare to total compensation of other Big Ten schools?
Good question. I'm not sure how to find that out

I looked for a little and couldn’t find much about total compensation. Purely based on salary, he would be the second lowest paid coach in the B1G (only Purdue’s Danny Hope is lower). I would think most schools are somewhat comparable in their extra compensation, so he probably still ranks near the bottom. But again, I could be way off base. It;s definitely possible that other schools don’t get as much outside support.

Nevermind! looks like I am way off base

Apparently, the USA today list of salaries IS based on total compensation. In that case, he is the fifth highest in the conference (behind Ferentz, Hoke, Pelini and Bielema). He could also be passed by Kill or Dantonio if either hits a large portion of their incentives.

So I guess hes right around the middle of the pack. That’s actually not all that bad. Hard to believe there wasn’t a bigger name who would have taken that offer.

Also should be noted that I'm sure Urban Meyer will be higher as well.
Not a misprint exactly

PSU is putting up $950K with the option of $200K for performance escalators. Nike will make up the difference to get to $2.3M. $2.5 will be if he hits all the performance target.

We're gonna do a ton of photoshops though, right?

I mean, that chin…

Interesting that no one in the press specifically asked about Tom Bradley.

I don’t think we would have got a direct answer, so it would seem to leave that unresolved for now, though I expect this to be addressed in less than a week.

So far so good, I’m definitely glad LJ Sr. is retained, no faux paus (sp?) committed at the presser. Gerry DiNardo made an interesting point on the Big Ten network about how “multiple offense” will translate to college. Lot easier to run a multiple offense with Tom Brady as your QB.

Welcome Coach.

Personally, I still don’t really have an issue with him not bailing on the Pats right now and starting immediately. I think that decision is made even easier by retaining LJ. Which, was a very transparent and calculated move to announce that publicly. Smart move.

I look forward to see who else he puts on his staff and how he helps to build his “legacy”.

I still dont like it

LJ certainly helps, but it would be nice for potential commits to see the new HC. And if McDaniels is hired back as the Pats OC, I think its even more BS, because there’s really no point for BOB to be there.

McDaniels

was hired back by the Pats. Official I believe.

So then I would hope that means that BOB will assume his coaching duties asap
Agreed, this is one of the few things I am not liking right now
Nope,

told the team (Pats) he will be back in Foxboro this weekend to prepare for next week.

he looked a bit surprised when informed of McD at the presser, IMO

so who knows what might happen.

Him getting kicked to the curb is not good for us, imho.

Surely he kept BB informed of his discussions with us. BOB having to say, “Well, on second thought, the Pats don’t need me for this Super Bowl run.” would be embarrassing and detrimental.

eh

you could spin it if need be. Maybe having McD will free up time for BOB to recruit.

All of this will soon be moot as the Patriots lose to the Steelers next weekend.
Hooray!

What do we have to think if the Pats seemingly have their worst offense output of the season in that game?

We credit our D of course . . .

Any blame in the other direction should be focused singularly on Brady.

I mean

that isn’t going to happen, but it’d be nice.

You mean

the Broncos..

Yeah I have been looking for the report that

he told the team he was on his way back etc. I saw it on NESN during a Bruins intermission. He also said McDaniels was “official” though and I haven’t seen that yet either.

I have to say, I would be very fearful of BOB leaving right now though, as much as I think it’s the wrong decision. What happens if he leaves, McDaniels steps in, and they drop 40 pts a game and win the super bowl? That couldn’t help recruiting I don’t think.

If JoePa can learn Skype, so can O'Brien
I thought that it was a good press conference.

Good to hear that LJ Sr. is returning. This will help with the recruiting, and win points with the current players and fans.

Also, I was glad that he honored Joe Paterno. This is something else that wins points with the fans.

game day

I wonder what his game day attire will be. Wind breaker, pull over, bellicheck hoodie. Also I didn’t have my glasses on but was Mrs. O’Brien kinda MILFy?

I’m thinking khaki’s, black sneakers, a bellicheat like hooide with a blue sweater vest over it.

My initial reaction would that you should probably put your glasses on. :) But maybe kinda, yeah. Had to giggle when I saw how much his younger son resembles him.

Can I get pics of the family?

Want to see the wife. I could only see she had short hair, but nothing else. I love short hair!

Welcome Coach O'Brien!

I still have my reservations, but I enjoyed watching the press conference. It was obvious that he was nervous (and rightfully so), but I thought he handled himself well. I like everything he said minus the (way too) high praise of Dave.

I thought the letter to the former players and alumni family was a nice touch. I’m excited that LJ has agreed to stay on staff because he’s our best assistant and best recruiter. Let’s see what kind of staff he puts together!

Only other thought – the contract. There is no way he coaches 5 years at PSU under that contract. He will either be fired for under performing or find success and bounce for more money because in the coaching world, 950k ain’t a lot of money, especially at such a profitable program. Let’s hope the assistants are paid well.

Again, welcome coach. Looking forward to seeing what you can do.

I assume he gets a Nike money too. The official contract may be misleading.

Plus, if we win, he can always renegotiate. I think the worries of him leaving are premature.

Boooooooooo

No Penn State ties… Patriots coach… Patriots = Tricksters.. Never around a quality college program… crap.. total crap

It is what it is at this point.

Just gotta sit back and hope for the best. No need to alienate him before he starts.

That's how I felt yesterday

But today brought some optimism.

Despite my angst for Joyner and the way everything has been handled, I am officially putting my full support behind BOB.

I agree - tiMe to lighten up

The decision is final and any rhetoric before he get the opportunity to execute his plan is a bit selfish.

(1) He announced retaining LJS
(2) Giving JoePa genuine respect (from my perspective)

Let’s support his initial endeavor (the PSU way) and let this thing play out.

If you watched the press conference, he didn't come off as a trickster.

I liked him. I think he was the right mix of nervous and excited. He didn’t abandon the past or Paterno. He wasn’t an arrogant ass like Weis was when he accepted the ND job. Talked family. The university need something to be positive about. There is too much bellyaching with no good reason.

BUT ALL PATRIOTS ARE LIARS
I thought this yesterday like everyone else

And I still think he may struggle. That being said, he has the right attitude and brings a solid offensive mind. He has my full support

Questionable hire......nothing more.....nothing less

There were better candidates out there with PSU ties as well as non-PSU guys. Joyner promised a home run hire but comes back with a 42 year old Patriots assistant with a coaching record that is less than steller. Someone who will not even devote his full attention to the job he was hired for from day one. Keeping LJ Sr. is a start and I will try to keep an open mind but it seems the #3 valued college program according to Forbes could have done much better. Interestingly I haven’t seen anyone question Joyner’s ties to the Patriot organization re: this hire.

Patriots...

In my life I’ve never rooted for the Patriots to win a Super Bowl more than right now. I hope the Pats win and O’Brien wears his Super Bowl ring on every recruiting trip. Go Pats and get the biggest gaudiest rings imaginable.

Nonsense.

Lose fast, come to State College.

Hell no

Lose as fast as possible so he can recruit like a mofo in these last few weeks. Not to mention the Patriots are the worst.

Yea, what the two above me said.

We need him recruiting. The SB is four days after Signing Day.

Not only that,

but they don’t get their rings for another 6-12 months. Tiffany’s handcrafts each one.

Saw a Saints’ SB ring when I worked during an internship in 2010. They also make every major sports trophy other than the Stanley Cup (obviously). They literally have a room with all of them just sitting there on shelves for the next season to be over.

Let's go Bengals/Texans!

btw, for those interested, they’re announcing the 15 NFL HOF Finalists right now on NFLN.

For the Pittsburgh fans

Three Steelers on the list: The Bus, Dermotti Dawson, Kevin Greene.

Maybe we can get back to talking about the football team around here, will be nice.

Dawson needs to be recognized now.

Bettis’ time will come.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes him.

Linemen always struggle for recognition, but he was so highly regarded for so long, I think he will get in ahead of the other two OL on this year’s list (Willie Roaf and Will Shields).

And he should get in before them.
Agreed.

Pittsburgh has had a crazy run at the center position, from Webster to Dawson to Hartings to Pouncey (more or less).

Now . . .

If we can just get and keep Pouncey healthy . . ..

We're rooting for Steelers/Texans.

A Cincy loss and Pittsburgh win pits the Steelers against NE, which I think would have a better chance of losing than if they were facing Cincy or Denver.

I'm always rooting for the Steelers.
Great Start

I will admit I was very pessimistic about this whole situation. Although not much has changed, BOB def. has started winning me over. I am kinda salivating at the thought of a Wes Welker type running the underneath route and Gronkowski running the seam. Now just hope he finds a good qb.

Please hire his dad

Nothing would improve the Eagles more

lol

look at McNabb and Vick’s numbers when not playing for him

I'm sticking with Paul Jones.
Only if grades stick to PJ.
I'm not ready to give up on him yet.
I like the idea of fitting the O for the skillset our guys have

and Multiple Ds sounds great, but I wonder if it will be something that college players can handle. I dont think you can really run the same stuff he did in NE with college players.

I agree but it also doesn't take as much to fool college D's
Where can I see the entire presser?

Anyone know?

Check BTN.com

They might have it there. Also if you get BTN, they might reshow it at some point, as they are want to do.

What's the general opinion of him after the conference?

Is he winning anyone over the faithful yet?

LETS HOPE NOT
I was happy with it

He said a lot of the right things. Talked about family being important to him, made a few comments about education, PSU being a family, etc. Said that he plans to stick with NE through the playoffs and explained it as he didn’t want to give up on a commitment. He also made a dig at Noah Spence, saying something about any recruits who jumped ship would be welcomed back.

He came across very honest and he alleviated some of my concerns, The only big worry I gave is that he made some references that imply he sees this as a stepping stone to an NFL job.

wow, i thought there was a lot more. he embraced Paterno, stole Ericson's water, announced he was keeping Johnson,

basically said he was the anti-RichRod by fitting his scheme 2 the players and embracing all the former players, lots of talk of family, both his and PSU family… thought there was a lot of symbolic touchstones; thought PSU admin staff prepared him very well. just my view, fwiw.

Personally, I moved from "neutral" to

“somewhat optimistic”, based on his presser. I thought acknowledging Joe was a finger in the BoT’s eye as well as recognizing our love for JoePa and how those shoes will be huge to fill.

The big proof will be how this year’s recruits will react. If he holds the current commits and somehow adds a few more who might be impressed by an NFL coach, that comforts me, If they are “meh” I’m back to worrying a little.

I'd say the general reaction was favorable.

He stressed education, building on JoePa’s legacy, playing exciting football, etc. Announced LJSr was staying. Seemed to understand the need to convince us to support him/coaches.

Negatives were he kissed too much ass (Joyner/Erickson), but probably felt he had to.

I am a little uneasy with the comments about his preference to the NFL over college.

But hey, I am going to jump on the “wait and see” bandwagon.

Folks, we will not get another JVP.

Five years will be about average. Even successful coaches move around. They use their success at Place A to get more bucks from B, plus the chance to rebuild another program seems to more satisfying than being consistent at one place for decades.

I don't expect a coach to stay for 40 years

But I think it’s fair to want a coach to stick around for 10-15 years if he is successful. There are a few programs that should be destination jobs – the only reason to leave would be for money. And with how much PSU makes in football, there is no reason they shouldn’t be able to match an offer if the coach is worth keeping.

PSU is a destination school, even if the media wants to pretend it isn’t. I certainly do not support the attitude that we should stop thinking this just because it is not commonplace anymore.

Not disagreeing with the theory --

I support it, matter of fact. Just think today’s reality than it was 30-40 years ago. Beamer at elite VT is now the longest-tenured CFB HC, I think, and he has been there “only” about 25 years, I think.

I understand what you're saying

But I think this all depends on how long we’re talking. My concerns are that if he wins, he’ll jump ship within 5 years. I find that unacceptable.

Agree what it would be unfortunate for us,

but if he wins, that helps “redeem” our program (note the quotation marks — that seems to be the public view of us right now), and could open the door for a bigger name coach. The latter is who many folks seem to want.

IDK, ppfcpp — too far in the future. I want to see what BOB can do in 2012 and 2013 before I get too worked up over the longer term.

Posted this in another thread

but here’s a short list of coaching hires that were loved by the fanbase: RichRod, Brewster, Zook. Here’s a short list of hires that were hated and seen as “settling:” Tressel, Hoke, Dantonio, Ferentz.

Let’s hate this guy all the way to the MNC

I certainly do not recall either Michigan coach being received that way

RichRod was certainly not a popular choice with many Michigan alums. And everyone I know from Michigan loved the Hoke hire (all though I know they would have preferred Harbough).

Inasmuch as Brian Cook basically dictates the mood of the Michigan fanbase

at least on the Internets, you’re wrong

Add Miles to the "settling" list.

Perhaps even openly loathed.

One of the local talk shows down here had people calling in with comments like, “you can tell Miles is a piece of trash just by looking at him.”

They still hate him.

He’ll win another MNC this year, and he’ll still be hated when he fucks up a game next year.

Last year was beautiful . . .

All the Ott and Songy sycophants in the BR area were killing the guy until they thought he was going to Ann Arbor. then suddenly they were whining like some dude who thought some cat with a bigger dick was fucking his wife. I think he is a decent man. My only argument is the oversigning issue. Otherwise, I actually believe that Les cares about these kids.

Don't forget Chizik on the 'settling' list.

Even I scratched my head at that one.

If you read ESPN's report on the presser

you will learn that

He will retain assistant coach Larry Johnson from Paterno’s offense.

I can’t make this stuff up.

PATERNO'S MORAL OFFENSE AGAINST CHILDREN AND AMERICA!

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE

Facts?

What good are those?

Well JoePa

always did believe that the best offense was a good defense.

AND NOW I TAKE A GIANT SIGH OF RELIEF
it's actually the AP story

so worse and more unexpected, IMO

Off Topic...Pitt is Losing 14-0 all is good today so far
21-0
21-3 at the half

it ain’t pretty.

Hail to Pitt.

FTFY.

Hail to Pitt To Hell with Pitt.

you'd think you could respect

loyalty to your school even when things suck.

I am showing respect to my school,

which is Penn State. No need for me to pander to Pitt.

Sorry...

I cannot, in good conscience, cheer for any team from the state of Texas…or Florida. I don’t care who they are playing.

More of an anti-Pitt position, Rodney.
I am very excited to see Penn State run a different offensive scheme

5 wide, QB audibles…are you kidding me? Awesome!

MOYE CAN HAZ ONE MOAR YEAR OF ELIGIBILITY?
Poor Moye underperformed this year.

QB situation certainly didn’t help, but there were several games where it looked like he was phoning it in. Probably will land him in the 4-5th round of the draft.

If he ends up being drafted, it will be solely based on his height

He did nothing this year that convinced me he could be successful in the NFL. Personally, I think he was a bigger disappointment than Bolden.

Not disagreeing, altho

the QB situation didn’t help him.

I think he will get picked, but not very high by any stretch. It will be by a team that needs a “filler” WR, not one desperate for a game-changer.

He was also injured this year I believe
I think he broke his foot.

This should not affect his hands. And my primary concern with him was his lack of effort catching the ball.

He was always inconsistent with his hands

Probably his biggest knock, aside from his thin frame. I think he’ll be a solid WR in the NFL. He certainly puts the effort in.

Moye was an incredible disapointment only because

I had such high hopes for him. I dont think he will play in the NFL. He didnt get invited to the senior bowl… that should tell you something.

He did pretty well last year

which led me to believe this year would be as good or better.

I think he has a shot at the pros — as noted, his height will make him attractive to some teams.

Until they realize that if you bump him at the line

He’s useless and they watch the nasty drops that were just about every ball Bolden ever hit him in the hands with.

He hurt BOTH QBs more than they hurt him.

They both would have looked a lot better if he played anywhere near the first day pick I thought he was at the end of last season.

I think I agree with this.

There were plays that looked easy that he muffed. Maybe the QB controversy stressed him out — some people react that way.

Also, while the great catches were rare

and he rarely went up to get them in traffic. Guys like Braylon Edwards and Bobby Engram make their QBs look good on bad throws and decisions some times. I can’t remember Moye doing that much at all this year.

Yep.

I have stated for a long time that great WRs help a mediocre QB far more than a great QB helps mediocre WRs.

So does the #TeamSkyler talk start today?
I would be happy seeing a game plan take advantage of an oppenents weakness

instead of going conservative and waiting for them to screw up.

So did he specifically say LJ Sr is coming back?

I only saw part of the press conference but if thats the case then i’m willing to say this guy knows what he’s doing

Yes.

He said that LJ Sr. is the only coach he has met with so far, but that he was willing to remain on the staff.

Only coach he has interviewed is LJ.

And he will be back. LJ said he needs to unpack his office now. He said he will interview the rest of the coaches today, and have the entire staff decided and in place in the next 2-3 days.

Thanks

I was hoping he would stay on. I know he’s one of the most coveted coaches in the country. Probably could work anywhere. I wonder what the chances are he becomes the DC

I would say, very high. But that's just a guess.
Lock him in,

in my opinion.

It would be a slap in the face if he wasn't DC
They said

IN HIS CURRENT POSITION.

What that means I dont know… Is that his Dline coach position? Or DC?

BOB may be waiting to see who he can attract to fill what roles,

and then decide where LJ fits in. For now, LJ is probably glad just to be hanging around; he can ponder later if he got screwed or not.

Solid A-

on BOB presser. Inspires confidence, is well-spoken. Now let’s see who is on the staff.

Well, okay then.

Although, I doubt O’Brien will be the Penn State head coach in 2016.

Welcome

He came in, he kept LJ Sr, I’ll remain positive.

From the looks of it Pitt could use a strong defensive coordinator.

I wonder who might be available?

please no

I dont want to have to make fun of Bradley all the time.

I know . . .

But I’d like to see him get a job.

He'll get one

just not at Pitt. Plus I think he could hurt PSU recruiting in western PA as a lot of HS coaches know him well and like him. So

The recruiting thing would hurt.
BTW, what is up with those O-linemen we got

out of the WPIAL a few years ago? Are any of them going to make a contribution to the Lions in 2012?

Part of Bradley's contract with Pitt

is that he’s allowed to wear a Penn State hat while coaching

yes please
Be prepared for a statistically strong defense every single year

and incredibly frustrating losses against inferior teams with competent QBs

are you watching this game against SMU?

I’d take statistically strong in a heartbeat.

Of course I will root for Coach BOB,

and for our boys to succeed. I live and die by this team and will cheer very hard for him to succeed.

But here’s the thing, Dave, you go shopping in the discount bin and sometimes you come out looking like a genius for what you found. But I can’t help but feel like the odds are against it. I will feel better if he assembles an excellent staff. If these ND GAs and Villinova position coaches that have been mentioned end up here my skepticism will mount. Let’s hope LJSR has some serious input over his defensive coaches.

Unrelated note.

Who do we like in the NFL today?

Lions upset and Bengals over the Texans
Lions, really?!
I'm pulling for the Lions this year.

Except for Suh, guy is an A-Hole.

Suh is just excitable. He's a real animal but incredibly nice guy off the field.
except for the fact that he can't admit to his mistakes on the field
Not immediately afterward...

But while he was suspended he called the guy from Green Bay he stomped and personally appologized to him. That was classy.

Lions win and things get ugly down here.
Sorry if this is becoming an NFL threadjack

I think I might just be at my limit for O’Brien/PSU talk. I am very curious about the mood down there. NO missed a shot at the bye with two awful losses (St. Louis and some other bad team). If they somehow blow it against Detroit, making it two first-year upsets in a row, does Payton’s seat start to get hot?

Also, how much credence is there to the idea of Brees not coming back next season?

first-round upsets, i meant
I think they'll still give him at least 2 more years

He’s a good coach depsite his pension to run up the score. The only way they don’t keep him is if they somehow find a way to not resign Drew Brees this off-season because that immediately would make them a mediocre team I think

Anything is possible with Benson.

But, the populace of south LA as a whole has elevated both coach and QB to demigod status, which is understandable considering this operation’s history.

I expect the building of backyard shrines to begin shortly.

Well I am biased on that one but

I honestly think they have a great chance of winning. Stafford has as many weapons as Brees and even though neither defense has been anything special this year I think the Lions still have the better one despite their pathetic showing against the Pack

What's the deal with Schaub?
Bradley is the type of guy that Penn State deserves

But not what it needs right now

Saw on ESPN (Sorry!!!) that Josh McDaniels will probably join Patriots during post season

Maybe BOB should consider leaving now.

Nope.

At least not according to the beat writers here. After the official announcement, he called team and told them he would be back this weekend to get ready for the playoffs. And the Pats said McDaniels would be an “offensive assistant” and O’Brien would maintain the OC title.

If BOB feels compelled to finish out with the Pats,

keeping him as OC is helpful to us. Demoting him could look like they are eager to get rid of him.

yeah, that's true haha
but according to you, the OC in New England doesn't have any say into the offense

I was SHOCKED when BOB said that Bellichek allows his assitants to coach, b/c you had said the other day that the offense was all Brady and Bellichek, and that they don’t even let O’Brien into the meetings.

It’s weird that they even want to retain him on the staff for the post-season, as my impression from listening to you was that he was an unqualified OC who had no active presence on the team.

Easy, guys.

Let’s hope, at a minimum, that BOB has gained some good habits and coaching tips by osmosis, if nothing else.

Org policy,

as I understand it, is to hold people to their contracts. That’s why they’re so insane with the franchise tag etc.

What is BOB supposed to say at his press conference? Coach Belichick never let me do anything? That would go over well.

Amazing McDaniels would return there

I’d assume he’d rather coach somewhere where he’s allowed to have some input into the offense he coordinates.

It’s legit to argue that with Bellichek and Brady the OC has a relatively easy job, or that it’s easy for the OC to look good. Compete bullshit to claim that he was not an important or desired part of the staff, even though he was promoted twice and given more responsibility.

Whatever expertise BOB has,

however he may have gained it, will be revealed starting Spring practice, All criticisms of the 2011 squad aside, we have some decent players to coach up.

It took two full seasons of vacancy

for him to get “promoted”. And the only thing he got was the title in the last year of his QB coaches contract. If they wanted him as OC, why not extend him and give him a raise when he gets the title?

Look at the history there. BB wants assistants that don’t have big time experience that he can mold and control. Look at the Pats assistant coaches histories.

Wanting staff that you can mold, and that's young and hungry

is not the same as wanting staff that you can walk all over. 84 is right; we jsut have to wait and see now. But I was annoyed by your insistence the other day that he’s some sort of glorified water boy for the Pats.

Incidentally, I talked to two friends in coaching yesterday, one of whom was a GA with O’Brien at Maryland. Both said his stock was huge in coaching circles, and that he’s a really nice, bright guy.

Don't doubt that he's nice.

Don’t doubt that he’s bright. Just know that members of this team complain that BB and TB design the offense, and then instruct the rest of the offensive coaches and staff how it’s going to go. Maybe they exaggerate. But the Weis/McDaniels history of coaching elsewhere, combined with the fact that he wasn’t even trusted nearly as much as they were while here, does not bode well.

Seriously, if he was valued, why did they not give him a new contract with his “promotion” to OC to keep him longer?

Charlie Weis is a terrible head coach

from both a football perspective and public relations standpoint, particualrly at the college level where you have to teach some level of fundamentals. But Charlie Weis always has been and always will be a great offense playcaller and play designer. At least two or three times a game at ND he would call the absolute perfect play, many of which were ingeniously designed. His year as OC with the Chiefs showed that he was a solid OC.

I have no idea why they didn’t give him a new contract, and no clue what legitimately happens in the New England staff meetings or when they design the playbook. Why didn’t the Pats fire him? Why did the Pats give him the OC title last year?

You haven’t shown an iota of evidence to demonstrate that O’Brien “wasn’t trusted nearly as much as [Weis and McDaniels].” You seem to have some desire to discount this guys experience with the Pats more than the facts would lead someone to. As I said above, there are legit reasons to say that his record as OC is exageratted, but until you can show some sort of proof that he’s given little to none of the kind of discretion that all other OCs are given in the NFL, I’m calling BS.

The Pats did not give him the OC title last year.

They left if vacant for two full seasons. Officially, BB said he was the HC and Offensive Coordinator for both those seasons. They gave it to him this year. Without any apparent change in responsibility, and without a raise or new contract. Apparently, you are comfortable with someone who his boss did not trust enough to promote for two full seasons, instead deciding to maintain the responsibilities himself.

Call BS, of course you can. I’m not going to NAME the people that have told me BB and TB add all the wrinkles and changes to the offense week to week on their own.

Tell me this. Do you expect any drop off in production with BOB gone from the Pats offense next season?

wait, is he or is he not the OC?

why did they give him a new title if he has no new responsibilities?

He used to be an “offensive assistant,” then was wide receivers coach, then QB coach, and now is OC. How can you say he wasn’t promoted. If BB could have been HC and OC for two years, why not three?

I expect the Pats offense to slow down next year, b/c people will adapt to and solve for the tight ends. That was probably the biggest offensive revolution in the NFL this year, and those types of things usually get figured out in the off-season.

I do expect Bill O’Brien to be successful at Penn State. I do think Bill Belichek liked and trusted him — why else hire him and promote him? Beyond that, I don’t know, but I do think you’re “sources” are complete BS.

He was given the title this year.

And the TE changes were made last year, not this year. They were deployed exactly the same way now two seasons in a row.

I also think Belichick likes him. If he truly wanted him to run his offense he would have made him OC far earlier. He had experience running college offenses. And it landed him an offensive quality control job. Why promote him at all? I could only speculate. I do knot that the only consistent press conference question for two full seasons was, “why don’t you get an offensive coordinator”. Then, after “naming” BOB, they asked what he was doing differently this year as OC, and Belichick effectively said nothing.

Why hire him at all? There are plenty of assistants you could say that about. There are multiple assistants who were out of football and had no coaching experience when they were hired. Why promote him? Since he joined the Pats, I don’t think BB has hired a single top level coach from outside. They have all been promoted from within or not at all and left open until someone within was eventually moved up. Was BOB the most deserving one on the staff if he had to pick someone? Sure. That doesn’t make him HC material.

From what I can tell, you are hanging your hat on the fact the the offense that consistently performed before him didn’t suddenly go to shit when he was given the OC title. I never called anybody a source. It’s not like anybody is badmouthing the guy. I said that I have heard from members of the staff certain comments about the way the org is run. Maybe they were total jokes or exaggerations and I’m taking them way out of context or overreacting to them. But whether you like or believe it they color my perception.

I’m glad you expect him to succeed. I am DYING to be wrong here, but I obviously don’t love the chances.

I don't want to undermine BOB because those before him became duds

Both Weis and McDaniels have serious personality issues too. Just a little too cocky.

And by the way.

McDaniels was fired as a HC, and was an anticipated casualty of another new coach in STL. You think it’s amazing that he accepted the job where he’s been credited with the only success ever in his career again?

No, I'm not shocked at all

Being the OC at New England is one of the best OC jobs in the NFL, because you have a great QB and a head coach that supports you.

I was being sarcastic, b/c your previous comments suggest that the OC at NE (or at least O’Brien) have absolutely no say in the offense.

I never said no say,

I said significantly less say than any other place.

Pitt v. SMU

Is turning into an old fashioned donnybrook. Finally some excitement.

Go, Mustangs!!!!!
Nice play by SMU DB

to steal away the Pitt TD. Taste that, Pansies!!

Something about Taxslayer.com advertisements on a football field annoys me.

Not to mention the damn Taxslayer bowl.

Thank goodness for the mute button.

I rarely watch a sports event with the sound on.

Particularly on the BTN.

However, if Gruden or Gus Johnson happens to be calling a game, I’m all ears.

Nah, I'm an equal opportunity muter.
Gruden is the WORST!

Listening to him is like sharpened pencils to my ears.

yes he is.

he loves the sound of his voice. and sometimes I think he loves the players a little too much

Fun drinking game

Do a shot every time Chucky bitches about replay.

BOB at the womens basketball game

“do it the right way both on and off the field with the best STUDENT athletes”

BOB will be interviewed at halftime of the Pitt-SMU game.

Less than a minute to play in that half.

On ESPN (unfortunately).

FWIW, i think BOB did very well at the press conference. Third 'test' passed, if you will. First test was getting the job; second was trying and succeeding in keeping LJ. So, not too shabby for now.
I really hope Vandy follows suit

Assuming he keeps those two guys and Scrap decides to coach elsewhere, the new DC will have to come with a pretty good resume to justify having authority over them.

Wonder if BOB will hire a special teams guy?

That area seems to vary widely from year-to-year, and I seem to recall that Joe’s priorities were (1) defense, (2) special teams, and (3) offense. Odd he never had a dedicated ST coach.

It will be HILARIOUS on Audibles if he doesn't.
As long as he passes the NCAA test soon,

so he can officially recruit. That was a little disconcerting during the presser, altho, in fairness, another poster pointed out that that may have tipped Joyner’s hand if the media had found out BOB took the test.

and as I said on an earlier post: didn't BOB say he still needed to study, new rules since last time he coached CFB. PR disaster if he failed that test!
He's smart.

I respect the Ivy League academics.

oh, agree seems smart; what not even suggesting that; but the NCAA rulebook is phonebook thick.
True.

But SEC coaches pass the test — I think BOB will be okay.

I assumed that was criteria for getting the job

“You must be able to complete, while drunk on Old Granddad, any mental task previously completed by Ed Ogeron”

If it wasn’t, it should have been

i just like zoidberg

One of the best characters on TV.
hmmm.... like him, but a good 30-50 characters ahead on the list even if I limit myself to cartoon/cartoon like (e.g., muppets).

damn, at least 10 from South Park alone, LOL.

Of course, I suppose we have to define “character.” Does South Park’s “Satan” count? I’d say “yes,” but could see an argument in the other direction.

I hate to admit this already

but BOB and Homer Simpson resemble each other . . .

um.... i think i am forbidden by my team loyalty from commenting on your comment. LOL
I've been trying to repress it

since he first stepped up to the podium.

He mentioned stealing his kid’s hat — that will help downplay the similarity.

at least your new coach doesn't look like Fred Flintstone.
Yabba-dabba-do!

Mrs. BOB does resemble Betty Rubble just a bit . . .

It's totally subjective

but very few make me smile more consistently than Zoidberg.

I really like how

amongst the important positives PSU has going for it, that O’Brien really believes in a “grass field.” haha quality.

He said that in honor of Les "The Cud" Miles.

I’ve heard that Miles is now contributing two gallons of milk per day to the LSU creamery. His blood type is 2%.

BOB on ESPN after a few commercials.
im watching now, is he actually going to be on

or are they just playing clips?

Apparently just clips.

They showed him reading the letter to us fans. Not a bad choice — he showed some passion in that letter.

yeah i just wasn't sure if they were going to talk to him live
doesn't look like we're getting anything live; just hype for upcoming ESpin programming.
Yeah,

much ado about nothing, to quote the Bard.

Sorry, guys; return to your lives — nothing to see here.

but before we go, what the hell is with Pretty Boy Palmer's hair today? Sorry, think it looks goofy.
Didn't notice.

I’ve been married for a long time — have developed selective sight and hearing.

I see four hooves --

I mean, feet — in that pic; must be Les Miles.

That appears to be a cloven hoof.
Lady Lions on here on CBS

In a big hole vs Mich St.

Can BOB step in to help coach them?
Looking for him, but only saw it was on when came back from half

Siad he was going, nice atmosphere for him to see the game.

And Coquese is the woman, love her, such a good coach!

Agreed.

Washington leading our lady troops is a good thing.

Does help also

That we have Maggie Lucas, she is a beast all around, great player.

Remember when we beat Purdue?

Awesome.

Honest question. Is Purdue a top 25 team this year? I have seen two games this year in person and have a tough time believing that they won.

For men?

No, somehow were not in the top 25, but have a great record.

Some joker on DC sports radio just bashed PSU fans

Basically said that we’re wrong for criticizing the hire, and that anyone who doesn’t like the hire should have sent their resume. He also said that anyone who thinks Bradley should have gotten the job “doesn’t get it.”

If there is anyone on this board who thinks this, could someone explain it to me? Because apparently I “don’t get it.” Outside of the media telling us we shouldn’t why could Bradley not be the coach? I’ve asked this a few times, and the only responses I’ve ever got are basically the “because PSU supports child rape”responses.

Well he is tru on one thing

I sent my resume, and didn’t get any calls. So that is why I am bitter!

because Bradley was there during the whole scandal

that’s it. Because of that, he shouldn’t be there. That’s what we “don’t get”—that anyone associated with it needs to be gone.

But apparently not LJ, all the press loves his retention.

LJ has only been on staff a handful of years

And all the writes are probably affraid he might pay them a visit with some D-Linemen on his shoulders, to have a “chat” with them if they talk bad on him.

This is my understanding too

That just because he had a relationship with Sandusky, he is tainted. If this is seriously the way society works now, I’m not so sure I want to live in it.

As most of you know, I work at Duke.

Small school with tremendous respect for their MBB program. BUT, even they do not understand the love we Penn Staters have for our school, Joe, and how our football program is very different from others. It’s like trying to explain a sunrise to a blind person.

So many people have loyalty/respect for NOTHING in their pitiful little lives, and so cannot wrap their heads around our situation. They think we should condemn Penn State and everything associated with it, as penance for JS’s sins. I ask people, "How did Paterno’s firing bring justice to the victims? Not a single person has been able to answer that question with any kind of plausible response.

They just don’t understand the magic of “WE ARE . . . PENN STATE!”

I am a huge Duke b-ball fan

And I don’t understand how we can support our team like that. I mean they have Coach K on a pedastal as well, so it is not like they don’t have some of the same things going on in that respect.

And generally Duke people seem to be stuckup, but they do have a georgeous campus.

You are correct re arrogance, Aries.

The sense of entitlement on the part of EVERYONE is amazing. I have a huge ego, but even I don’t expect to have my butt kissed every minute of every day. (Just weekdays is good enough.)

I told some of my friends there after K broke Bobby’s record: “I need to send an e-mail to Coach K, telling him to watch his back extra closely now. That’s when they got Joe.”

My buddy who lives outside of Chapel Hill

In carboro, basically put it that, the trianlge there is like Connecticut in the south, where they know the difference between tan and sandalwood.

Entitled for no real reason.

My older son graduates from Chapel Hill in the spring.

I know where Carrboro is. Your friend is spot-on.

The university needed a break with the Paterno regime. Under Paterno, football became the tail that wagged the dog, and that was demonstrated by the reaction to Paterno’s dismissal. When you have people trying to stage a coup because a coach was dismissed, there are serious problems with the culture and priorities.

Breaking from the Paterno tree represents a chance for the university to get its priorities back in order:

1. Research/Education;
2. Education/Research;
3. Community service/improvement;
4. (a distant 4) winning football games

I'm just going to go ahead and assume you're being sarcastic
Also

Oh. Em. Gee.

You just put Paterno’s priorities in order. The only thing you forgot was number 1A- helping boys turn into respected men and leaders of the community.

No.

You are wrong. But contiue to make your mom proud with your troll.

who tried to "stage a coup" because a coach was dismissed?
Nobody yet . . .

I’m still marshaling guns and ammo.

“It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people’s minds.” – Samuel Adams

I will drink to that.
Boston radio guy was similar

He was ranting and raving about horrible the PSU community is, and while mocking us for being upset about O’Brien’s hiring, he says “There is no reason for people to be angry at who their next coach is. The ONLY thing they should care about is investigating the scandal and worry about the victims.”

Sounds like a plan! First, let me get my Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass out of the drawer, then I’ll fly to SC and start knocking on people’s doors to REALLY get to the bottom of all this! This should be my SOLE focus in life as a PSU alum. Obviously we’re all concerned about the scandal and the victims, but does he even realize that you can, ya know, have multiple thoughts at once?

Who were you listening to?
Felger and Mazz

Felger absolutely despises PSU. In the middle of his rant he said verbatim “People in the PSU community are just…bad. They’re bad, bad people.” Holy sweeping generalization.

Felger really is terrible.

Right after it broke, after going off about how Joe must have known since the 70s what Sandusky was doing, he said he didn’t get the outrage anyway, because he hasn’t even been a good coach, but just coached for a really long time. He then averaged out his yearly victories and decided 8-9 victories a year was not impressive. So what was the big deal since he wasn’t even a good coach?

Yup.

I was watching the simulcast one afternoon

When Bertrand was giving the update announcing JoePa has cancer, he smirked and said “Huh, now isn’t that convenient?” What an incredible douchenozzle.

Somebody called up

talking about how Bear Bryant died after retiring, asked if he thought the same would happen. Felger said, “who cares”, the guy said “well, because I hope he does”, Felger said, “oh, yeah, ok.”

This has been one of the things that bugged me most
but does he even realize that you can, ya know, have multiple thoughts at once?

Everyone in the media seems to be unable to comprehend that people can have multiple thoughts and emotions at once. The fact that I am interested in the coaching search does not mean I don’t care about the victims. It’s like assuming that someone can’t learn how to write and do math. They have to choose one or the other.

I used to follow some WEEI guys, unfollowed them on twitter real quickly

Too many snide PSU remarks for people who don’t even have a damned horse in the race.

Do you remember who the personality was?
Not really

I didn’t listen long – just happened to catch that as I was flipping stations. It sounded kind of like Mike Wise, but I’m not very sure of that.

That was probably Bill Rohland

He does weekends, or it could have been Kevin from Kevin and Rock. Not too sure.

Also

Danny Rouhier (sp?) is another waste of space. I’ve gotten into with him on twitter a couple of times, and I actually called his show last night. Of course I had to correct him about our ‘felony count’ and how many guys have been actually found guilty.

Basically why I don't listen to sports radio anymore.

I realized they are less interesting and insightful than rotten potatoes.

Attention, attention:

Troll on deck.

CBS

Just called IT, the controversy. When talking about BoB.

Lady Lions Lost unfortunately

But had a hell of a second half, should be proud of themselves, came from 20 down to pull within 4. Missed too many shots towards the end, especially at the charity stripe.

Thought he handled things pretty well at the press conference

Although it might just seem that way because we’ve been listening to an 80 year old for the past 5 years (not a knock on Joe….just an honest opinion).

Is it true that he wouldn't answer whether Friedgen was joining the staff?

Or was that supposedly after the presser?

Pitt falls..

To the Mighty Mustangs, 28-3 In the BBVA Compass Mieneke Papa Johns Chick fil A Bowl.

That Pitt game was dull and rusty.

I’ve seen more compelling Pop Warner scrimmages.

You deserve credit

for sitting through the whole thing, though.

Couple of very questionable calls went against the Pantheroos.

However, I am sure they are ready for the Chrust era.

Is it a definite that Bradley is not staying on the staff?

I dont see why asshole I mean Joyner cant say to Bradley “Look… I had to do an outside hire this time, he probably wont be here in three years. That said, it would mean a lot to me if you would stay on, and that would be the time we could possibly hire you for the head coaching job.”

It might be best for Tom to go elsewhere,

and then in four or five years bring him home as HC if BOB moves along for whatever reason.

Yeah at the risk of sounding like Im pouting here..

I dont want Tom to go elsewhere.

I'm thinking triumphant return . . .

Like Trajan after conquering Dacia.

okay, poll of readers: if you speciffically understood that reference, say "yes". I admit I did not, tho' I suspect I understand the gerneal sense of it. :-)

c’mon, Sublime baby; say it, then say it again “dumbed-down” for us non-history folks.

do it like the "Simpsons" or "Looney Tunes": @ three levels: for smart people, for dumb people and for hooked in-the-know people.
Rambler would know this.

The Column of Trajan on the Forum celebrates the event.

Easy rec from me

Completely know what that means…When he comes back, will there be a column built in his honor?

WELCOME Coach O. O as in O'Brien . . .

. . . O for OFFENSE ! ! !

Welcome Coach but

this still does not settle the fact that Craig James killed five hookers

/taps heart, points to the sky

For the five.

More importantly,

Cory Giger needs to answer some questions.

and the 800 pound gorilla in the room is . . .

Correction

McQueary. Also – GOOD luck to Mike and all of the coaches, staff, etc.
