Resilient Effort Not Enough As Lions Fall To Hoosiers 88-82

I don't even know where to begin with this absurd game, but the biggest thing to take away from a PSU perspective is this team has absolutely no quit in them. Indiana built double-digit leads 5 separate times in the game with dagger after dagger from deep, but PSU responded every time with a little run of their own. They got down 22-15, and answered with a 7-0 run. They were down 37-26, before going on a 11-2 run. Then they were down in the 2nd half 56-46 before cutting that lead to 3. Lastly, they were able to cut a 76-65 deficit with under 5 minutes left to 80-78 before ultimately falling short thanks to 10 straight made free throws by IU down the stretch.

The numbers from this game are all out of whack, but that can happen when one team makes 16 threes on just 24 attempts (66.7%). Indiana's offense today makes a great case for tempo-free stats. Their FG% was a respectable 51% for the game, but their barrage from behind the line boosted their eFG% to 68%, which was the difference in the game. Also, get this; PSU completely dominated inside play for the game. They outscored the Hoosiers 36-10 in points in the paint, while shooting 55% on 2's compared to IU's 35% (22% from non-Zeller players).

Penn State didn't do the best job slowing down the perimeter obviously, as they let IU get into rhythm early. They were caught watching the ball a few times, got beat in transition a few times, but Indiana also was very good moving the ball to open shooters. Their balanced attack is very tough to stop and despite PSU's effort shutting down the lane, IU scored 1.24 points per possession. Matt Roth and Jordan Hulls did nearly all of the damage for the Hoosiers, combining for 50 points on 12-15 shooting from three.

Team Poss Score PPP eFG% OReb% TO% FT Rate
PSU 71 82 1.15 51.7% 25.7% 12.7% 42.4%
IU 71 88 1.24 68.1% 26.9% 22.5% 68.1%

Star-divide

Penn State stayed in the game because they rarely turned the ball over. IU's quick and effective shooting dictated the pace of the game, a pace many of us thought would wear out the Lions. Only 9 turnovers in a 71 possession game is fantastic. But equally as encouraging is the shooting performance of everyone not named Tim Frazier. Frazier was definitely productive with 21 points, but needed 23 shots to get there as he once again struggled from the floor (7-23). IU sagged off on him on the perimeter to respect his quickness, and Frazier was unable to hit anything from outside. However, despite Frazier's shooting woes, the rest of the Nittany Lions shot 64% eFG% for the game. They also had their best day at the foul line, making 21-25 for 84%.

Jermaine Marshall had another solid effort with 20 points as he continues to be PSU's #2 threat. Indiana clearly saw the Purdue tape and were all over Billy Oliver. BO didn't get much action, but he was able to hit 3 tough threes that offered some hope he might have finally found his shooting touch going forward. Matt Glover continued his selfless play, stuffing the stat sheet with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. He also did a great job running the point and extending the game after Tim Frazier fouled out with 1:30 to go in the game. Jonathan Graham and Ross Travis also had great games, combining for 16 points and 9 rebounds in 40 minutes. You can see it starting to click for both players. That wasn't more evident than watching Ross Travis miss a point blank shot, get his own rebound, and then realize why wasn't he dunking the ball in the first place.

I will make one remark on the officiating. It was horrible both ways all game long. What did you expect from an Ed Hightower crew?

Looking ahead, PSU has a favorable stretch over the next three games (@ NEB, ILL, MIN) before making the return trip to Bloomington. I'd like to think PSU could win a game or two during that stretch, but it is important to not get carried away. This team has played over their heads the last few games, so a few letdowns should be expected. It's so great to see the progress of the team this ahead of schedule, however. Coach Chambers has been doing a remarkable job, and they deserve some fan support.

I love the post-game interview...

…with Pat Chambers.

Definitely.

He’s not going to let them take any moral victories (even if he knows this was one in his head).

Where is Trey Lewis?
Chamber's Doghouse

As far as we know, he didn’t do anything dumb, but he just hasn’t been meeting Chambers’ expectations in practice. Also, Pat has been happy with what Colella gave in their hard practices, so he’s giving him Trey’s minutes.

I don’t expect it to last. Trey is too competitive to not work harder.

Well, there were a lot more people there than for the Purdue game

This team is definitely maturing though, very fast

<3 Chambers and the job he’s doing

There is no type of opposing player I hate more

Than a white guy who can’t stop hitting threes. Brings back horrible memories of Dan Majerle against my (former) Sonics as a kid. Rex Chapman is another. Ugh.

It's really a shame that Penn State had such a disappointing out-of-conference run,

because if they’d been playing like this in November, you’d be talking about tourney seeding. Penn State was just so tough today, and really exposed some serious weaknesses for our squad (rebounding, defense in the paint, and several players like Oladipo and Watford were taken seriously off of their game. If some bounces went the other way, we’re looking at PSU schooling two Indiana teams in the span of a week. Best of luck the rest of the way.

Thanks.

I’ll tell you what, though, you’ve got some stone-cold shooters on your team. I’ve never seen a team effort like that before (I still haven’t seen anything like what Deibler did to us last year). Best of luck to you guys as well. See you in Bloomington.

Looking back,

the last minute of the Ole Miss game was where this season went from “legit NIT contender” to “get better for next year.” If that last minute goes better, PSU is very possibly 12-5 with a win over Purdue and a near win over Indiana. The Ole Miss game was incredibly close and intense and draining and the team that played better in the last minute (Ole Miss) won. Win that, and I honestly think PSU bests Lafayette and Duquesne. Tournament stuff? Eh…probably not, but definitely on the road to a respectable-enough-for-a-rebuilding-year B1G season and NIT run.

Before the season I was hoping that by mid February PSU would be a team that the best teams in the B1G were legitimately scared of. PSU might be there now. This team is probably exceeding my expectations as is.

Don’t take the rebounding stuff too seriously. Tim Frazier is one of the 10 best PGs in the country and this is a legitimately good rebounding team if nothing else.

I don't want to start lauding "moral victories"

but I am also realistic about our where we are with our basketball program. Given that Chambers entered a pretty tough situation, with a very young roster and basically none of his own recruits to work with, I came away from this game feeling pretty damn good about the direction he’s taking PSU hoops.

There's little you can do..

When the opponent is hot from behind the arc. Same thing happened to our girls against MSU. It’s funny though. This seems to happen to PSU a lot: I still remember Devoe Joseph, Jake Kelly and countless others.

Crazy game

If you had told me before the game that Indiana would outrebound PSU and hit 16 of 24 3s and PSU would only lose by 6, I’d have told you that you’re insane. It happened.

How does this team shape up compared to last years squad at the same time?

I know pretty much everyone was ready to write them off from anything, and we still found a way to win our way into the Dance.

17 games into last year

PSU was 10-7 (better than 9-8 now, though not by much) with a bad loss to Maine (though more forgivable than Lafayette this year), but ranked #62 KenPom with 2 RPI top 50 wins (currently PSU is #121 KenPom and has 0 RPI top 50 wins), a B1G road win, and two very close road losses to Ohio State and Michigan. They also had Talor Battle and the suddenly efficient Jeff Brooks.

The one thing I will say this team definitely has over last year’s is depth. Last year, PSU’s bench received 17.5% of the minutes played, which ranked #343. This year, 34.0%, which ranks #112.

PSU has played like a legit top 68 team (though it’s really the top 45ish and the bad conference champs who make it) in the last couple games, and if they keep getting better and get a little lucky, an NIT bid isn’t out of the question. To get there, PSU would have to finish at least 7-8 in their remaining 15 guaranteed games (including 1 BTT game), and that’s a very tall order for such a young team, but PSU finished 9-6 in B1G play last year to get there in a more experienced B1G, so we’ll see.

As this team matures even

it is going to be very interesting how they look. Next season, this team will be legit im really excited

Completely agree

I think this will be a legitimate sweet 16 team (if not better) next year. For now though, we suffer through a rebuilding year.

Pump the brakes man.

Not many teams go from no postseason to sweet 16 in one year.

I do think we could have a legit shot at making the Dance, though.

Not many teams lose 83% of their minutes from one year to another

then return over 90% the next year
