Cael Sanderson returned to his home-state Saturday night to take on Utah Valley in a rare Saturday night dual. Penn State won 9 of 10 bouts beating the Wolverines 39-3 drawing in almost 5,500 fans for the meet. Frank Martellotti was the only Lion to lose, giving up a tough 3-1 decision to Blake Mangum of Utah Valley. Penn State closed out the road portion of their dual season going undefeated away from Rec Hall. Penn State returns home to take on Pitt next Sunday at 2 p.m. the last dual meet of the season.

Penn State used three pins, and three majors to rack up 12 bonus points and won the takedown edge 31-6. Quentin Wright, David Taylor and Cameron Wade all got pins and Frank Molinaro beat UVU’s only ranked wrestler, No 14 Josh Wilson 6-0 including over 4:30 minutes of riding time.
Ed Ruth took the night off to let Utah native Matt Brown wrestle at 174 and he didn’t disappoint, getting a major decision over Monte Schmalhaus 13-3. Bryan Pearsall and Nico Megaludis were the other two wrestlers to get major decisions.
Before the official match started, backup heavyweight Jon Gingrich wrestled a preliminary bout (didn’t count in the team score) and beat Utah Valley’s Zac Jensen by a 13-2 major decision. It was that kind of night for Penn State, almost everything went well.
Penn State will wrestle Pitt to finish out the dual season. Pittsburgh will come into the dual ranked in the top-10 (they currently are ranked 9th), and just got done beating No. 22 Hofstra 22-12 Friday night. Pitt brings in a quality team and will make it a good match to end the season. Check back in Friday night for my preview of Pitt.

Man, what happened to the Frank Martelotti we saw last year. The talent is definitely in there, it just seems like he has absolutely no confidence right now.

Yeah, there is definitely a confidence problem right now.
Frank needs to get a win, ANY win and get back on track

Missing the 1st half of the season is tough.
Hard to get back in a groove; you’re 3 months behind everyone.
Still…………..

I think he's also had trouble adjusting to the weight
Just a guess, but he doesn’t look as comfortable at 133 as 125.
I also think part of it was over inflated expectations of the fans. Frank was good last year but he beat mostly guys in the high teens. I think a lot of people expected him to come in this year and take a big step forward and that might have been a bit of a reach.
That being said, Saturday’s match showed that no matter what is going on he’s no where near in the form Penn State needs to him to be in. They have a couple weeks to straighten things out and anything can happen, but right now I’m not overly optimistic.

What happened to 52-0?

Yeah,
I went a little over the top with that but…
If Frank wins that’s a 6 point swing which puts the score to 45 – 0, and if Ed Ruth wrestled he would have pinned Schmalhaus , that’s another 2 points. So yeah, I was a little off.

Morgan
He seemed to be bothered by his knee injury. I hope he can recover enough to be competitive in the tournaments. So far this season luck has not been his friend, with those oh so close losses and now this freak “accidental” injury.

In other wrestling
I’ve got Minny beating Iowa 17-15 due to no bonus points for Evans this time and Ok St beating Illinois 24-9. Then Ok State wins 17-16 over Minnesota. The score will be tied 17-17 after the last bout but Minny loses due to a point deduction for unsportman like conduct when J Robinson pulls a Woody Hayes on OK St’s HWT Gelogaev in the last seconds of the match.

OK
But jrob usually takes his cheap shots through the media rather than face-to-face so they may need to go to another tie breaker.
