Penn State Recruiting Roundup Is Set For A Big Junior Day

Photo

Being named head coach at Penn State weeks before the end of the Class of 2012 recruiting cycle presented Bill O'Brien with many challenges. Along with his new staff, though, Coach O'Brien was able to close out a class that could have ended a lot worse, given the circumstances surrounding the past four months.

With his first full year upon us, Coach O'Brien's first major test of the Class of 2013 begins in earnest this weekend, with 50+ recruits set to attend the first Penn State Junior Day weekend of the year. You can view the continuously updated lists as compiled by Lions247 ($) and Fight On State ($) with subscriptions, but our friends at Victory Bell Rings have also compiled a list of visitors free of charge (Many of these visitors have been independently confirmed by Black Shoe Diaries). Listing everyone is very difficult, as there are always last minute additions and subtractions. But below is a sampling of confirmed guests at each position.

In Junior Day news. The list.

Star-divide

Penn State Junior Day Attendee (abridged) List

Quarterback: Ryan Burns, Christian Hackenberg, Damion Terry, Boeing Brown, Tyler Cogswell
Burns and Hackenberg have offers, and the rest are looking for theirs. If this class ends up with one of the first two guys, and one of the remaining three, consider this QB haul a whopping success. We had an interview with Hackenberg a couple of weeks ago, and many feel he is the better of the two (Burns being the other top QB). There will be a couple of other lesser known (for now) quarterbacks in attendance.

Running Back: DeVeon Smith, David Williams, DeShawn Coleman, Richy Anderson
None of these three currently have offers, but expect at least one of them to leave camp with one. Williams, the top in-state rusher, would be a great commitment for the Nittany Lions. Just yesterday, Jared commented on how high DeVeon Smith's ceiling was, so watch for the Ohio native as well. Also, the answer is "Yes, Richy Anderson IS the son of THAT Richie Anderson."

Wide Receiver/Tight End:Adam Breneman (visiting Friday only), Robert Foster, Ryan Switzer, Tyler Boyd, William Fuller, Brian Lemelle
Breneman is the top dog here, despite Foster's higher rating on every service. While it's nice to see interest from highly rated, in-state prospects, I don't think PSU will be much of a player for Foster. Breneman and Switzer, on the other hand, would be great additions to the class. I've spoken with Switzer, Boyd and Lemelle, and will try to get some Junior Day reactions from each.

Offensive Line: Brad Hanson, Brendan Mahon, Dorian Johnson, Jordan Page, Tommy Hopkins
They're all listed over 6-5, a number of them near or over 300 pounds, and they all already have impressive offer sheets. Add Mac McWhorter and Craig Fitzgerald to the mix, and it's going to be a hard sell for these kids. Mahon and Johnson will be two to watch, the former being a western PA kid being strongly recruited by Pitt, and the latter being a New Jersey lineman with high interest in Penn State.

Defensive Line: Garrett Sickels, Rod Crayton, Curtis Cothran
Not too many defensive linemen visitors, but a few good ones nonetheless. We profiled Cothran earlier this week, while Sickels and Crayton are two out-of-state prospects that Larry Johnson would love to add. Crayton in particular, being from Alabama, would be a great pull and a fresh new direction in recruiting (in addition to Johnson'srecent California recruiting ($)).

Linebacker: Alex Anzalone, Zayd Issah, Jake Plonski, Hodari Christian
Jared and I brought you updates on Anzalone and Plonski, respectively, in the past week, and Issah is a top in-state linebacker from whom we'll hopefully be bringing you an update in the near future. Hailing from Central Dauphin, at the very least, I know Issah has one fan on the BSD staff. Additionally, highly rated New Jersey linebacker Buddy Brown will be on campus the following weekend, following his visit to Charlottesville this weekend.

Defensive Back: Reon Dawson, Delton Williams
With the secondary once again a major target in this recruiting class, Penn State will try to get as many defensive backs on campus as possible. Dawson is a good cornerback target out of Ohio, who looks to be traveling with a teammate of his, in whom Penn State is additionally interested. Stealing two good Trotwood-Madison recruits out of Ohio would be a great step forward in the Class of 2013.

***********

Michigan Updates. As per usual, Ace has a pretty in depth update for Wolverine fans. Not too much overlap at this point, though there are some names you'll find both here and there. Expect that number to grow as we move into the 2013 cycle.

Urban Looks for a Quarterback. Eleven Warriors begins an interesting seriesthat I may have to steal later in the offseason, looking at each position quite in-depth through recruiting tinted glasses. And included is this paragraph by Jeremy, which I couldn't possibly agree more with:

It is my belief that to remain as one of the top football programs in the country, it is vital to recruit a quarterback every year, no matter what. There are some who disagree with me as a matter of numbers and semantics, but I think to maintain program's continuity, knowing who your QB is going to be in two years is just as important as knowing who it will be this year.

Ohio State appears to be targeting two quarterbacks in this class, with athlete Jalin Marshall in the fold already. The remaining targets listed don't really overlap with Penn State's list of top quarterbacks, which is good. Hey, I don't mind going head-to-head with Urban, as I feel Coach O'Brien will be able to hold his own in some of those battles. But if Urban, one of the country's best recruiters, isn't after Ryan Burns or Christian Hackenberg, I'm OK with that.

For further insight to the Buckeye plan, take a look at Alex's rundown on Ohio State's offensive gameplan and defensive gameplan for the Class of 2013.

BOB Talks Recruiting. Coach O'Brien sat down with Sean Fitz of Lions247($) recently to discuss his recruiting plans, including answering questions posed by the L247 audience. Some quality information, including BOB's not-quite-specific geographic plan of attack.

I can tell you that every coach has an area of Pennsylvania, even the ninth coach that I hire will have an area of Pennsylvania. I'm not going to get into the specifics of where each guy is recruiting, but I can tell you that we're going to recruit New Jersey, we're going to recruit Ohio, we're going to recruit that Mid-Atlantic area of Maryland and D.C., we're going to recruit Northern Virginia and all of Virginia, too. We're going to recruit all of Florida, all of Georgia, we're going to recruit New York, specifically the Buffalo and Rochester area, we're going to recruit Ohio by the Cincinnati region and Northeast Ohio. We're going to recruit Michigan, we're going to recruit Delaware and we're going to recruit New England.

Part One of Fitz' interview with BOB can be found here. Part Three can be found here ($).

Staying With 247. If you're a premium member of 247Sports, you are well aware of Sean Fitz (and others, at times) unbelievable work with the "S Zone", a semi-weekly rundown of some great information. The first one of the 2013 cycle came out last week ($), and it did not disappoint.

No Eddie Vanderdoes at DT?

Yea, he's the new DT target.

But I’m not sure how much mutual interest there is. Going to be tough to get him out of California.

The more important thing about Vanderdoes’ recruitment is that LJ is now actively recruiting California.

where in Cali?

I’ll go talk to him

His profile on L247 says Auburn, CA.
Recruit Buffalo and Rochester

Win championships. It’s that simple really. We’re good stock.

To Do List:

1. Be Awesome
2. Get More Awesome

You from Buffalo or Rochester?

I lived in Hamburg for a few years right after college. My apartment was off of 62 near the fairgrounds.

Grew up in Rochester, live in Buffalo now

Right in the middle of Elmwood. Affordable boozing abounds.

Are you a PSU alumnus?

If so what year?

I'm not.

Grew up a fan, lived in State College for a brief spell, and have multiple family connections to the school. Why didn’t I go? Well, sometimes 18 year olds make silly decisions.

and sometimes 23 year olds make stupid decisions as well

/law school’d

Gotcha..

I don’t care either way, from conversations here I know some of the writers on the site were up there when I was (Junny, AC) though I didn’t know them at the time.

No big deal to me. As long as you don’t let Urban Meyer recruit you.

I didn't go downtown that often to booze.

I usually stayed closer to home base. There was a place in Lackawanna called the Funhouse that was kind of cool, but I think it closed down not long after I left. I liked going to the bars on Lake Erie (Mickey Rat’s, Captain Kidd’s) in the summer, too. Are those places still around?

We need another Derrick Williams moment...

Lock in one/two stud QB’s and see if either one proactively begins marketing PSU 2.0 for the remaining recruiting class. Personally speaking, there’s nothing more potent than have another D-Will recruiting blitz!

We don’t need a fire to get this thing going…just a spark!

We had that last year with C-Will, before...shit happened.

Cannot understate the importance of a recruit that recruits.

King came before Williams. King also got Sargent

We won't be a player for Brenneman?

What makes you say that? He’s been tweeting about PSU and O’Brien for a month, he’s been messaging Steven Bench since January, and he’s been to State College twice in two weeks, not to mention he is a self-proclaimed Penn State fan. Short of committing today, I don’t know how much more interest Adam Brenneman can show in the Nittany Lions.

I think you misread.

I said we won’t be a player for Foster, though that could change.

anything can happen when they get on campus
Ummm...

“While it’s nice to see interest from highly rated, in-state prospects, I don’t think PSU will be much of a player for Foster. Breneman and Switzer,”

I’m confused.

Nevermind, I got it

I need to get glasses again. Damn period looks like a comma. Sorry Jeff.

It's cool.

It’s entirely possible I put a comma in there, so I had to double check. Put the finishing touches on this last night after a few beers.

I agree with the recruit a QB every year notion.

We’ve seen what happens when you recruit multiple QB’s every couple years. Not pretty. Once Clark (somewhat predictably due to seniority) won the starting job in 2008, we were unprepared for the future because we didn’t recruit another QB until Newsome in 2009.

Devlin/Brackett – one barely sees the field and transfers to Delaware, the other gets converted to a WR and makes a minimal impact on the field.
Bolden/Jones – one got his entire career knocked out of him in Minnesota, and the other has yet to get himself eligible.

If we had recruited a QB in 2007 or 2008, he might have been able to take over in 2010, leading us to a stable situation where Bolden could develop without being thrown into the fire. Instead, we laid all of our eggs in the basket of Devlin sticking around for 1 year or Newsome working out.

I don't know, regardless of eligibility things can happen.

Newsome was probably not working out no matter what class he was in. I don’t agree that Brackett had a minimal impact. And do you really think we hoped Devlin would work out for one year? Or do you think we thought Devlin would wind up being the guy for three full years, but were surprised that that the unheralded Clark developed so well and turned into a Maxwell QB?

Look, I'm the biggest Brackett homer there is.

We went to the same HS, and I had class with him every day for 3 years (he was one class ahead). But to say he had any more than minimal impact on the field over his career is disingenuous. He had a huge impact off of the field, and I would never take that away from him.

And it doesn’t really make a difference whether or not we thought Devlin would work out when we recruited him. He didn’t. My point is that we put all of our eggs in the Newsome basket because we didn’t recruit any QB’s for two years. If had taken one a year, we would’ve had two other options by the time 2010 rolled around.

Yeah, I just don't think it's that simple.

When you take one a year at a place that does not have a reputation for getting QBs to the next level, you are going to have a difficult time attracting top players in my opinion. I think a big reason guys like Devlin, Newsome, Bolden and Jones signed on was because they took a look at the depth chart. If you take one every year, and every other year or two out of three that QB is a fringe talent, then I don’t think you’ve improved your position all that much over getting a top talent or two every 2-3 years.

We’ll have to disagree on Brackett. I would call 39 catches, 525 yards, and 5 TDs in one season QB’d by one of the worst QB units in the conference a significant impact. I don’t think that’s even bordering on disingenuous.

With that much "fringe talent", you're going to find a diamond in the rough relatively often.

I’d rather rely on getting the potential Robinsons and Clarks of the world every year than the Morellis, Newsomes and Devlins once every two or three. I’d argue that you have improved you position because if your one top talent is a bust (see: every top talent we’ve brought in since Morelli), you’re completely screwed (see: 2010 and 2011). If we had to do it all over again, wouldn’t you have chosen to recruit mid-level QB’s every year instead of waiting two years to coax Newsome in?

His senior year, he certainly contributed some. But before that, he was basically a blocking TE. I know this because I picked him out for every snap he played in, and it was almost always a run. He also got 1/3rd of those catches/yards and 3 of 5 TDs against Indiana State and Temple. Like I said, he was a big leader off the field. Lift for Life, being named the team captain, definitely the hardest-working guy on the team. He had an enormous impact off the field. But in his best year, he wasn’t significantly more productive than Justin Brown or Devon Smith.

To clarify

I’m immensely proud of Brett. He’s the nicest person I’ve ever met, and I’m not trying to take anything away from what he brought to the football team. He was probably one of the most important players on the scouting team during his time. What he did the with the Lift for Life is amazing, and the fact that he was named a team captain for being such a strong leader speaks volumes.

You’re viewing me as trying to bash a guy who did everything right during his career. I’m not.

I don't take it as badmouthing.

I just think you have a definition of minimal impact that I strongly disagree with.

Asking me to decide specificly on Newsome is too much hindsight

to draw a prospective conclusion. If you are asking if I want a constant stream of two stars over an inconsistent intake of four star QBs, then the answer is no. I think you would be much more likely to have difficult QBing years with the former. With Newsome/Jones/Bolden, we have been so far terribly unlucky. I don’t think the macro data supports that as being the rule.

I also don’t think you can count on getting Clark’s all that often, if ever, and Robinson was a very heralded recruit. For every Clark there have been 10 years of two star QBs we couldn’t even name they lacked impact so significantly.

I'm trying to base my decision on hindsight.

Empirically, the logical conclusion I’ve drawn from my (limited, didn’t follow a lick of cfb until I started attending PSU in 2007) experience is that I’d rather have options, even if those options are perceived as slightly lesser.

You’re also exaggerating the situation. We’d be able to pull in mostly 3 stars, with the occasional 2 or 4 guy thrown in. I’d rather foster an environment of intense competition, rather than waiting for some big-name guy to come and assume the starting job because he’s the least bad.

I'd also rather not overuse rather, rather than making a rather difficult comment to follow.

Apologies.

I'm not so sure it is an exaggeration, not when the depth chart would be full.

But either of us are speculating, and I’m certainly not calling your opinion invalid. I do think your sample size is very small, but I cannot fault despising any method that resulted in our 10-11 quarterbacking. I just think that it is a pretty extreme example, and a statistical anomoly.

Fair enough.

Luckily, I’m not in charge of making any of the decisions. I’m not calling your opinion invalid either, in fact it may be a great method for us if we can show a better propensity for developing QB talent.

No worries, didn't think you were.

I can just have a tendency to come off more disagreeable than I intend when I am disagreeing. Just making sure.

Let’s just agree to get the top QB in the country every year, deal?

Haha, deal.

I have the same tendency.

Both of your opinions are invalid

Only my opinion is right.

let's hear it
Oh

I think we should strive for a QB every year but don’t take some scrub just because we “have” to have a guy each year.

But my comment was made in jest more than anything.

I know it was.

I was giving you an opportunity to state some off the wall claim and say that it is correct just because it is your opinion.

Come on, you didn’t think I cared about your actual opinion, did you?

Long day. Missed that.

Well, really, opinions are only as reasonable as the person making them. Since I am superior to you because I am not in Massachusettes, my opinion is more credible than yours.

Hey.

If it wasn’t for Massachusetts we wouldn’t have ’Murica.

Not true.

We would have a better ‘Murica, because William Penn’s model would have prevailed. We would be the United State of Pennsylvania, and not have to deal with o$u.

Massachusettes?

What are those, the women of Massachusetts? If so, and you aren’t in Massachusettes right now, then that makes one of us.

LOL.

When I worked for the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, we called the female auditors “SIGIRettes”.

I would say Bracket had more than a minimal impact.

And I am being a ingenuous or genous as possible.

If you recruit too many quarterbacks...

then they transfer somewhere else because they don’t want to wait their turn.
We’ve lost a number of good quarterbacks over the years because of that.
I can remember when a guy named Steve Joachim transferred to Temple because he got tired of playing second fiddle to John Huffnagle.
And Jeff Hostetler went to West Virginia when he lost the top spot to Todd Blackledge.

Sure, it’s nice to have plenty of depth at the position, if they’re willing to stick with the program until they earn the top spot. But why waste a scholarship on somebody who isn’t committed to staying with the program?

Safeties

We really need to recruit high end safeties once again—especially with Roof’s aggressive schemes.

DBs in general

The cupboard is bare, even with the incoming class. No depth.

I agree...

We haven’t had the kind of talent he wants to use in man coverage.

excited/dissapointed

greg webb isn’t visiting which sucks, cause im really high on him, (heard he is a state champ wrestler) I like the linebacker and qb talent coming a whole lot, and david williams shot through the roof by dominating the nike combine

dominating the nike combine

Can always use another excellent Ag student. Personally, I like to eat . . . .

Greg Webb

Is from Timber Creek, a school where the PSU name isn’t exactly shinning brightly. Also, he was in State College last year, and ran into a bit of an issue. Took to Twitter and said some things about PSU. Not sure our chances with any of the TC guys, so we’ll wait and see.

Don't you mean shining?

Quiet boy, do ya wanna get sued?

Shinning sounds like it hurts.
[nods approvingly]
Are we going to try to get LJ after the DT

from Baltimore? Poggi? What’s his story?

What happened ?

As a NJ HS coach I am a little familiar with that program. They usually crank out a lot of D1 talent. I would hate to lose all future kids from there.

I believe the story goes something like...

They were on an unofficial recruiting trip, left the recruiting lounge for whatever reason, and when they tried to get back in, they were denied admittance. Not sure of all the details, or if they have a legitimate gripe, but I know there was some issue last year.

Legit or not,

going to Twitter to scream about it is not the correct response.

How does he measure himself against other players?
I read this and I resisted for 2 or 3 minutes, but I just can't...

by height

Why would you want to resist?

Only reason I would want Mr. Webb on our team. If he agreed to change his first name of course.

Not at all where I thought you would go with that.
hopefully

the atmosphere of THON can help sway them back into our favor

I just hope that...

…people remember that this weekend is about the kids, not the recruits.

Who would even worry about that?
Breaking: all cancer money redirected to tat fund!
Am I doing this right?
