After another exciting Signing Day around the country, though with little fanfare in Happy Valley, there are some new names that Penn State fans will need to commit to memory. So join me as we take a walk through the Class of 2012, including some analysis on what we needed, what we missed out on, and where the class stands overall.
Quarterback. Hailing from Georgia, Steven Bench was the lone signal caller taken in a class that desperately needed a quarterback. The 6'3", 210-pound QB from Cairo High School will be the fourth scholarship quarterback on the roster in 2012, provided each of the other three return, which at this point is a relatively safe bet. Previously a Rice commit, Bench was a three-star prospect, and is hopefully the first of many recruits out of a southern state.
The rest of the newest Nittany Lions after the jump...

Running Back. Like quarterback, taking at least one running back in this class was a priority. With only three scholarship running backs (and two fullbacks), the position was going to be thin, figuratively speaking, heading into 2012. That's why it was a relief to Penn State fans when St. Francis (NY) running back Akeel Lynch chose Penn State. The 6', 205-pound back was a four-star prospect that should see some valuable playing time in 2012.
Fullback. None.
Wide Receiver. Penn State stocked up here, taking four wideouts, though it wouldn't be a shock to anyone to see one or two of them move to the defensive side of the ball. Headlining the position (and the class) is Pennsylvania's own Eugene Lewis, Wyoming Valley West. A consensus four-star prospect, the 6'2" commit is the one most analysts feel has the highest upside in the class.
Additionally, Jonathan Warner out of Camas (WA) High chose the Nittany Lion. The 6'1" receiver has a familiar name to Nittany Lion fans, as he is the son of Penn State legend Curt Warner.
Finally, two receivers who are the ones most likely to see position changes in the future signed on the dotted line yesterday, opting for Penn State over schools like UConn, Iowa, and West Virginia. Trevor Williams of Calvert Hall (MD) College and Malik Golden of Connecticut's Cheshire Academy were each recruited by other schools as defensive backs, but come to Penn State on the offensive side, for now.
Tight End. Penn State's lone early enrollee of the class was tight end Jesse James, a 6'8" beast from western Pennsylvania. James has been on campus for a few weeks now, and is getting acclimated to college life and a collegiate weight program. Don't be surprised if James slides down the line, given his large frame.
Also out of Maryland, Brent Wilkerson joins Penn State from the high school powerhouse DeMatha Catholic. Like James, Wilkerson could be facing a position change in the future, as he played and was recruited as a defensive linemen by some schools.
Offensive Line. Two offensive linemen were taken in the Class of 2012 as it stands today (again, position switches). The first was also the first verbal commitment for the class. Anthony Stanko from Howland (OH) committed way back in the peaceful time of March, 2011. The consensus three-star linemen comes in at 300 pounds, and is the lone Ohio commitment as well.
Additionally, The Hun School (NJ) lineman Wendy Laurent comes in with the ability to play any of the offensive line positions right away. Standing 6'4", weighing in at 285 pounds, Laurent adds depth to a line that may see some early departures if certain players don't make an impact in 2012.
Defensive Line. Another position of need was the interior of the defensive line, and Larry Johnson, Sr. went to work this year, stockpiling at least four commits who could end up seeing time at defensive tackle. Leading the way is four-star Jamil Pollard from West Deptford (NJ), a two-time commit, as Pollard had his offer rescinded due to grades, but fought his way back into the good graces of the staff.
Next, from Gilman School (MD), Brian Gaia will provide further depth on either side of the line. Recruited mainly as an offensive lineman, Johnson saw someting in Gaia, and that alone should be good enough for Penn State fans.
The remaining two defensive tackles committed on the same day back in June, right after the Penn State junior camp. Both Derek Dowrey, of Handley (VA), and Austin Johnson, of St. Augustine Prep (NJ), will look to come in and compete right away, despite the high level of talent above them on the depth chart.
Finally, Central Dauphin (PA) defensive end Evan Schwan was the last verbal commitment of the Class of 2012, and fills the one end spot, that many speculated was being held for another central PA defensive end. Standing 6'6", the three-star prospect comes in a little light, but at proper weight, could be a real steal in this class.
Linebacker. Only one taken in this class, but that's okay given the depth ahead of Valley View's Nyeem Wartman. A Pennsylvania product, Wartman comes in as a consensus three-star commit, and looks to thrive in Coach Ron Vanderlinden's linebacker factory.
Defensive Back. The position group that was the highest need in this class, Penn State signed three players to the cornerback and safety positions in 2012, though as mentioned, there is a distinct possibility that at least one other commit eventually finds himself in this group. DaQuan Davis was a one-time West Virginia commit, but committed during a feverish two-day period that saw six commitments for the Nittany Lions. Davis is a current teammate of Trevor Williams, and both are former (and now future) teammates of Adrian Amos. Davis projects at cornerback.
At safety, Jordan Lucas comes to Penn State from New Rochelle (NY) Prep, and was the first verbal commitment of the Bill O'Brien era. Standing 6'2", the three-star prospect has the potential to see immediate playing time, with both Nick Sukay and Drew Astorino departed from the 2011 secondary.
The final commitment of the Class of 2012 is also its most vocal. If you follow Jake Kiley on Twitter, you're well aware that his love of Penn State was born a long time ago, and he's quite vocal showing it.
Kicker/Punter. None

No class is complete without a punter/kicker.
psume06 - February 2, 2012 via mobile
You're probably right.
However, Jake Kiley told me last night about this guy, Joe Marvin, a preferred walk-on long snapper heading to Penn State. So that’s as close as we’ll get in this class, apparently.
Jeff Junstrom - February 2, 2012
what a crazy, messed up world we live in
when long snappers have highlight videos.
“wow, did you see the velocity of the snap at the 33 second mark!? This kid is a diamond in the rough!”
swiggy04 - February 2, 2012
Happy Ground Hog Day
Half way through winter. Things looking up.
Two straight “big” days.
PaJoe - February 2, 2012 via mobile
What's this win..ter?....that you speak of?
jman07 - February 2, 2012
Yeah
Bad winter if you like snow and ice sports. I don’t. So, were on the upward swing till spring!
PaJoe - February 2, 2012
Team Bench...
…for starting QB
LowcountryLion - February 2, 2012
He’s got to be better than a ham sandwich.
jman07 - February 2, 2012
I have had good ham sandwiches
psupride - February 2, 2012
Leftover Ham sandwhiches are the best.
FB6244 - February 2, 2012
Clearly you haven't seen the potential of Ham sandwich...
I watched him play in high school, he had a cannon of an arm. I’m hoping we’ll recruit recruit his WRs and HS teammates Mayo and Mustard. The football just stuck to their hands!
jls83 - February 2, 2012
Okay
I was told there would be a surprise today?
Are we getting a Quarterback transfer from NC State or something?
Dr.TobiasFunke - February 2, 2012
Jay Paterno's being retained and promoted...
…to Offensive Coordinator, right? Oh God, I knew it! I knew this day would come. I guess I was just fooling myself.
LowcountryLion - February 2, 2012
This
I am waiting for the surprise.
Ben16 - February 2, 2012
The last three months were an elaborate practical joke staged by Peter Funt, John Surma and JoePa.
kijana's acl - February 2, 2012
You can't reveal a surprise like that yet.
You’d need JoePa to lead the team out of the tunnel on opening day.
WorldBFat - February 2, 2012
Stop by around 11a.
Jeff Junstrom - February 2, 2012
At 11?
I’m at work so I’ll be here all day.
Dr.TobiasFunke - February 2, 2012
I hope the surprise is more pictures of Mrs. Bench

PSUCharmas - February 2, 2012
agree, more pics of mom
Its like when I used coach little league. You have the draft and you can usually get good players with the first 4 picks, then decent and development kids with picks 5-9. Then with picks 10 to whatever you chose the kids with the hot moms, at least that is what I did.
BMAN13 - February 2, 2012
I hope this class gets to raise
a Paterno-Stagg trophy or two before their time is done at PSU.
FB6244 - February 2, 2012
Paterno-Stagg Trophy?
It’s the Paterno Trophy. I’m removing Stagg’s name — he should have done more to stop this fission nonsense before Fermi ever got started.
SubLime - February 2, 2012
So awesome
that Joe Paterno had his name removed because of some contrived moral ineptitude.
Yet Woodrow Hayes’ name adorns a trophy still. No moral issues there, amirite???
swiggy04 - February 2, 2012
No, Woody did more....
He took action. He saw that poor, little Clemson guy, Charlie Bauman, abusing his Buckeyes. So, he stopped it then and there by pucnching him (and the referee). The OSU BOT (or whatever they called it) fired him immediately.
So, one coach gets fired for not doing enough, another gets fired for doing too much. What’s a poor coach to do?
PaJoe - February 2, 2012
the lesson here
physically assaulting a kid first hand is FAR less offensive than merely taking information second hand to superiors about the sexual perversions of another separate man that these superiors allowed on campus in the first place, and simply assuming said superiors would do their friggin job.
swiggy04 - February 2, 2012
Can't wait to see that trophy with a Post It note stuck to it.
dwf5095 - February 2, 2012 via mobile
Excited
to see how BOB and his staff shape these guys. Good potential here. Yay football!
The Mustard Tiger - February 2, 2012
I agree
There is some raw talent there. Hope to see a lot of contributors.
PaJoe - February 2, 2012
on another note
Does anyone know where Coach’s final resting location is located at pinehurst cemetery? I drove up from Atlanta last night and i’d to pay my respects.
Batwing - February 2, 2012
Just a look at the 2012 class
Just went through ESPN / Tom Lemming’s top 100 kids in each position. Now before I reveal this breakdown I am not saying the rankings are 100% accurate or determines how well the player will turn out. However, unlike BOB I do believe there is a lot of vilidity to the rankings. BOB said he doesn’t care at all about them. The list breaks down position then how many of our recruits are listed and their overall position number.
Athletes O , C 1 (#54) , G 2 ( # 13 & 54 ) ,T 0. TE 1 (# 27) , WR 1 ( #34), RB 1 (#77), QB 1 (#75) Defense DE 1 ( #48) , DT 2 ( # 31 & 37) OLB 0, MLB 0, CB 1 (#54), S 0. So out of the 19 players we signed only 11 are in the top 100 at their respective positions. Overall the class ranks in the mid 50’s. You could sugar coat it anyway you want but you are not going to will many conference titles nervermind national championships with classes that poor. I will give the coaches a chance and not include this class against them but the next 2 or 3 years are crucial. I was watching the national signing day on ESPN & they were talking that LSU already has their 2013 & 2014 recruit boards all ready to go.
NJDeadhead - February 2, 2012
Generally I agree with you.
But you have to take this year’s class with a grain of salt. Given what happened, it could have been A LOT worse. 2011 wasn’t a stellar year either, so if BOB’s first full year (Class of ‘13) isn’t up to par, then you can start with the panic. Right now, let’s wait and see what BOB can do on the field and on the trail.
Also, using ESPN for recruiting analysis is like relying on TMZ to get your political news. I can’t tell you where to go to get your recruiting news and analysis (other than here, of course!), but you should branch out into Scout, 247Sports, and even Rivals.
Jeff Junstrom - February 2, 2012
247 seems like the best.
IMHO.
Uhaul - February 2, 2012
I agree and I am giving BOB a wash for this class
I did as you suggested and I checked out Rivals. If anything the ESPN’s rankings were similar. They had our class # 50, they had us w/ 1 WR #20 so that was better, but they only had 1 G # 23, the # 100 CB -worse, # 21 & 89 DT’s which was also worse (lower) then espns so I think I should use my ESPN rankings it makes me feel a little better. Lastly I agree with you 100% and wait until 2013 starts to come together before I really start to panic.
NJDeadhead - February 2, 2012
I am like you in my belief to the validity of rankings NJDeadhead, however....
I agree with Jeff. You can’t hold this class against BO’B or his new staff, they had very little time to make real recruiting inroads. I have always stated on this site that I am willing to give this recruiting class and season a bit of a pass, simply because of the magnitude of the change at PSU.
What will be interesting is next year’s class. If we don’t improve than it begs a lot a questions. Rankings are important, but coaching is sooo important. Teams like Wisconsin, Iowa, Boise State, etc. never get great recruiting classes but are always competitive and somehow get into the Top 10! I’ve always said it here, and I’ll say it again…in college sports coaching is the ultimate X-factor in producing consistently winning, championship calibur squads.
OLDLIONofNYC - February 2, 2012
good points
I would take Boise out of that group just because of the conference they have played in all these years and that is not saying that their coach is not a good coach. Utah found out how depth becomes a concern when they moved to the Pac 12 this year for example. Wisconsin usually gets the best players in Wisconsin to go there so it is like LSU and Ohio St. in that way. But you are right about the coaching—look at Florida St., Clemson, and Texas the last several years. Texas and Florida St. are usually in the top five of all those services every year but Florida St. did not make that move this year like they should have and UT fell back big time and got beat by KSU, OSU and got blown out by OU and will probably get blown out by OU again (I certainly hope so).
mjtig - February 2, 2012
Agree to a certain degree
What you said is correct, coahing is extreamly important. Especially when you have to teams with similar talent levels but if you don’t have the players you can only win so many games. It is difficult to name many conference champions or nat’l champions dont have loaded rosters. You need BOTH to win. Remember Boise St. is not playing against top competion week in & week out. they are an excellent team and as you pointed out very well coached but I can’t picture them going into a Big10, Big12, Pac10 and dominating as they do now.
NJDeadhead - February 2, 2012
You look at Boise's losses recently
They have all been close, meaning games could have gone either way. They could have one all those games. Remember, they did beat an SEC team, Georgia, in the state of Georgia this past year.
That team can (or did) compete with everyone, and that is about coaching, I think they will be very competitive in the Big East and wherever they go afterwards.
OLDLIONofNYC - February 2, 2012
Agreed, you do need both
mjtig - February 2, 2012
agree also on Boise...
not doing as well in the SEC, BIG, Pac or even ACC. The week in week out tougher competition would test their depth and if there are injuries, they would fall back even with great coaching.
mjtig - February 2, 2012
They would do well in the ACC.
They already beat V-tech a couple of years ago in DC. Would they win the SEC, BIG or PAC, probably not, but they would be competitive and make a bowl game every year. They would definitely have a shot at winning the ACC.
OLDLIONofNYC - February 2, 2012
There are few institutions that would not have a shot at winning that garbage conference.
Uhaul - February 2, 2012
he he, Florida St. with all their 5 stars should be ashamed of themselves...
Jimbo has some pressure already
mjtig - February 2, 2012
You may be right...
about the Va. Tech win, it was the first game of the season just like the UGA game which is easier to prepare for and a chance to go into it relatively healthy (can’ t know when an injury is coming but once you get into conference play, they tend to pile up more). Boise has played their big games (big named match ups) either as the first game or a bowl game. Being a Penn St. fan, I know you are used to the BIG grind from the Iowa game on for this past season for example (Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio St., and Wisconsin as the last four).
The ACC may be the one, but it would still be tough for Boise to have as much success in the ACC as they have had in the WAC.
mjtig - February 2, 2012
They play MSU @ MSU in their opener this upcoming season.
So we’ll see this team against a good BIG oppenent on Aug. 31.
OLDLIONofNYC - February 2, 2012
Boise returned just about everybody on both offense and defense...
the last two years. This coming year, they return only 9 (5 offense, 4 defense) and lost Moore and some good DT’s. It will be interesting to see is they can sustain against MSU in their house.
mjtig - February 2, 2012
You cannot judge BOB on this class.
Let the man have an entire year to build a board and recruit and we can judge his failures and successes then.
Uhaul - February 2, 2012
I mentioned earlier I am giving BOB a wash on this years class
but that doesn’t mean that it’s too early to start to think about next years class. Teams already have boards set up for the 2013 & 2014 classes. I am saying that BOB has to get a jump on recruiting for next season. Which he very well may do starting Tuesday (after the Giants blast him). It does make me a little nervous when he says that the rankings mean nothing to him and that hes looking for specific players and he doesn’t believe in them. Well, besides all the oversigning & greyshirting the SEC believes in them and they are winning all the BCS games lately.
NJDeadhead - February 2, 2012
What's he going to say?
He can’t come out and say, “I want nothing but 4/5* kids, everyone else just sucks.”
Besides, those ranking sites…are not always the best indicator. I think offer sheets are actually more insightful than snowflakes.
DrewRusse - February 2, 2012
Your belief that the Giants are going to beat the Patriots
destroys your credibility.
Just kidding. (Sort of)
PSUCharmas - February 2, 2012
lol
NJDeadhead - February 2, 2012
Yeah, he is just saying that....
I’m sure he does want recruiting accolades and those 4/5 star recruits, but understands this year there was no chance for it.
In terms of PSU, the best thing (and I hate to say this, but I’ve already Fanposted about it) is for the Patriots to win
OLDLIONofNYC - February 2, 2012
Running Backs
Not too worried about the lack of depth. After paying more attention to the Patriots offense since BOB was hired I fully expect to see a TE lineup in the backfield and carry the ball 5-6 times a game, successfully.
Curmudgeon79 - February 2, 2012
PSU already has it's draft board too
That Cedar Cliff kid said that he’s already planning his visit to PSU and that Strollo has been to see him. These guys know what they’re doing..
Obviously, PSU cannot have the #50 class every year and expect to be great. Nobody would argue otherwise. But a team represents at least five different classes. And this one will be the smallest or second smallest in any five year window we put it in, so while it’s not good news, it’s not really bad news either. If we can get two or three very good to excellent players out of this group, that will probably be good enough.
As for BOB et al, there’s not a whole lot they could do this year, but what they did do looks pretty good. They got some guys that weren’t on the radar before. According to Steven Bench, they presented a very clear plan for what they want to do with the offense. That’s all very positive. All ten of the coaches will be out recruiting whereas before only six did. They’re going to recruit the whole planet much more heavily than the previous staff. This is all for the good.
Yes, Ohio State did very well, but unless they plan to just shamelessly cheat every year, they won’t be able to stock up like that the next few years. Besides, we’ve had these panics before. Remember when Ron Zook got a bunch of great recruits from DC that we wanted? How did that turn out in the long run?
Having said all of that, I fear that football is headed in the direction of college baseball (although not to that degree) and that it’s really not going to be possible for PSU to win a national championship. BigTen ? Yes! But nationally, i see that the talent is all so disproportionately in the south and in California. Even if we recruit the hell out of those places, how many of those kids will want to come to State College? I cannot relate to somebody that would rather live in Tuscaloosa than State College. God bless them but I just don’t get it and I don’t want to get it. But apparently that’s how it is with many of the top recruits.
And frankly I don’t see academics and success with honor being big priorities with the majority of the stud recruits out there. I see them wanting warm weather and an easy path to the NFL and bullshit like worrying about what number they’re going to wear (seriously, did you see that article about how that influences decisions?). They focus entirely on their individual football careers and not much on the university.
If that’s how it is, than that’s just how it will be. I will support the team as long as they’re doing their best to win the right way, but I won’t if they win by lowering the standards.
reedjohnmiller - February 2, 2012
Jersey Numbers??
did you see the article about the kid who decomitted from Clemson after his visit because he didn’t see a Chik fila? Yes..i’m being serious
farrellpsu - February 2, 2012
I agree with you reedjohnmiller
but I think Urban will continue to do what he’s doing cause that is what he knows. Look at Alabama, they oversign every season yet always sign another 25-28 kids. Why cause they dump the lowest 10-12 kids. As far as lowering our standards, I don’t know if that is necessary you just need enough good players to get to the BCS, then you only need one win to be champs. Remember, it will be tough to win Big10 Titles if we don’t ever finish in the top 5 in recruiting. But, like I have said I am going to let BOB & staff do their thing and see how it turns out. This year’s recruiting is just an exception and can’t be counted.
NJDeadhead - February 2, 2012
