An Interview With Class of 2013 VA QB Christian Hackenberg

If you took a look at the recruiting breakdowns that were profiled here in the past few days, you'll note that one of the main priorities for the staff in the Class of 2013 is a top-level quarterback. Luckily, there are a number of high quality quarterbacks in the regional recruiting grounds, including two elite passers from Virginia.

Already earning a four-star (93 grade) rating from 247Sports, Christian Hackenberg is currently sitting on eight offers, including Penn State, Alabama, Tennessee (where he is being recruited by head coach Derek Dooley, a friend of Christian's father from their playing days at Virginia), Miami and others. Standing around 6-4, and weighing in around 210 pounds, Hackenberg could be just the man to be the elite signal caller taken in this year's class.

Star-divide

Hackenberg will be at Penn State for the upcoming junior day on February 18, a day that is quickly filling up with some top talent, which now includes five-star Pennsylvania wide receiver Robert Foster. While Foster is considered a long shot for the Nittany Lions, Hackenberg has serious interest in one day playing in Happy Valley.

"Penn State['s offer] came the most recent, and they're the one I'm trying to get in touch with, and get to know the program more."

Hackenberg grew up in Pennsylvania, an early fan of the Nittany Lions, before moving to Virginia to attend Fork Union Military Academy. Both of his parents were Division 1 athletes, with his father playing football at Virginia and his mother attending Lehigh. In addition to inheriting their athletic prowess, Hackenberg is very interested in choosing a school with great academics, just like his parents.

"I'd have to say it's academics, then football. Both of my parents, one of them went to UVA and one of them went to Lehigh, they both had good educations. So that’s what they're big on for me."

While at Fork Union, Hackenberg has impressed fans and scouts, alike, even if the offense they ran during his junior year wasn't exactly his first choice.

"We were forced to go into shotgun this year, because our OL wasn't really strong, we really didn't have much of a run game. My whole high school career I've run the pro-style, you know, work off some play action, throw it 15-20 times a game, up until this year. Ideally, if I had to pick one, I'd like to go to a pro-style offense."

At Penn State, what that offense will look like remains a mystery, but Hackenberg has been keeping an eye on the Patriots, as Coach Bill O'Brien led the team to the Super Bowl with one of the league's most prolific passers.

"The success they've had with Tom Brady, and developing him into what he is now, it's definitely a great opportunity for me."

Penn State's offensive scheme, if it in fact mirrors the play of the Patriots, interests Hackenberg. But he's also interested in attending a school with a family atmosphere, a place he can call home.

"[A family atmosphere] is one thing I'm definitely high on. I want to be able to fit in with the team, be comfortable with the coaching staff."

As for a time frame, Hackenberg isn't in any hurry, but believes in the Potter Stewart method of visits.

"I'll make the decision when i know it; ideally, I'd like to get [my commitment] done this summer, but I'm not going to rush it either."

For the new Penn State staff, getting him on campus on February 18 is the first step towards that goal.

Hoping he becomes a Nittany Lion

Seems like a good kid who can play. Hope we can get him and/or another good quarterback in this class.

I see "Family Atmosphere"

mentioned constantly by recruits or coaches. Can someone give me an example of a team that doesn’t stress a family atmosphere?

Da U
After reading this interview and what this kid wants, I only have one thing to say..

COME TO PENN STATEEEEEEEEE!

Sounds like a sharp kid.

Hopefully he decides that PSU is the right fit for him.

Sounds like a Penn Stater to me
I’d have to say it’s academics, then football.

I hope he commits to us so that he can officially become my new favorite Penn Stater. Right now he’s my favorite potential recruit

I like our chances with this one

Great size, I like his motives, and I really hope he comes to penn state

He just sounds

like a Penn Stater

Hackenberg to Breneman

I like the sounds of that. Hope it happens here. Both seem like they’d be good players and good representatives for the school.

This is our most must get

in a long time. We get an early verbal from Christian and he helps recruit or shows people like Adam Breneman and Robert Foster that they got their big time QB for the next 4 years then that goes a long way. I also think we are on the verge of Ryan Switzer who makes Wes Welker look bad (albeit against terrible WV competition, but he is sick) verbal to us. I got Steven Bench recruiting him by sending Bench Switz’ highlights and Twitter username lol.

I like Hackenberg A LOTTTT better than that other Ashburn VA QB, Ryan Burns. Kid can play ball.

Also, Switzer and Breneman

will be on campus for Jr Day this month together! Let’s hope they verbal and we can welcome them to the PSU Family!

good sign

@adambreneman87 tweet “Just got off the phone with coach O’Brien. Awesome guy.” Sounds like we are actually moving toward 2013 recruiting. Hopefully he travels rather then skypes lol.

...

This picture should really accompany all recruiting articles. I don't care if it's too soon.
It's only too soon if it's meant negatively

I think it’s pretty obvious that Paterno recognized the humor in it when they made the spot, and therefore it is more of an homage to a great and hilarious moment from a few years ago.

WE’AH LINEBACKA U!

oh definitly

This was Joe being silly

I never cared much for that commercial...

even though I knew JoePa saw the humor in making it….

I would’ve preferred that he had said “Come to HAPPY VALLEY” with a twinkle in his eye and confident smile on his face…

But the B1G didn’t want to pay my consulting fee on this matter, so they went with the desperately coercive JoePa instead.

I think it helped more than hurt us

it showed that Joe just wasnt some old guy who was completely out of touch with everyone. He could make a joke and be a little silly if he wanted.

I had this picture up before.

Not sure why it ended up being x’d

Strange.

as long as it’s somewhere on recruiting pages, its all good.

Wanted to add

Another QB from Ashburn VA will also be at the JR Day this month. Ryan Burns who is ranked #47 overall in Rivals100 rankings just released today (Hackenberg is not on the list).

I like this
We were forced to go into shotgun this year, because our OL wasn’t really strong,

Sounds to me like his high school offense is way further advanced than our old regime’s was.

Jr day

Does it usually coincide with thon? If so, do the recruits and their families stop in? Hard to imagine anyone seeing that scene and not being impressed.

never thought of that

the scene is crazy, heres hoping they make an appearance with everyone going nuts…i am unusually excited about this 2013 recruiting class, they don’t seem to be as close to the vest with who they are going after and are really letting the media help hype up the new staff

If you wanna talk about school pride and family

THON would be a pretty big pull. It’s awesome.

PSU stopped having Junior Day recently. BOB brought it back.

Some schools are trying to slow the recruiting process down. Penn State was one of the first schools to take early commitments. In 1994, the Nittany Lions offered a scholarship to wide receiver Joe Nastasi during the spring of his junior year at Northern Bedford High School in Loysburg, Pa. Early scholarship offers were rare in college football at the time.

“That one probably started it,” Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley said. “We were very familiar with him, and he lived just down the road.”

But the Nittany Lions don’t have a single player committed to sign with them in 2011. Bradley said Penn State no longer stages junior days because it found they were not as effective as inviting prospects to campus on an individual basis.

“For us, junior days haven’t been as successful as inviting kids up one-on-one,” Bradley said. “We don’t seem to do as well with the junior days. One or two kids might get left out and then they feel slighted. We think it’s more valuable when you can spend time with one kid at a time.”

I hadn’t considered the THON / Jr. Day connection, but it’s a really good idea. What better way to reassure prospects and parents about PSU?
